Best buy of the year for me (I meant to rate this 4 stars).......2006-12-17
I was looking at this while exploring to expand my Stoner Rock collection (which I'm an avid fan of) and when I saw the price there was absolutely no reason I shouldn't pick this up. Now, I've owned this CD for about a month and I've easily listened to it 20 times. I read a complaint about the less than stellar sound quality but I enjoyed the more gritty sound it provides, it gives you a more dirty and "metal" feeling while listening to it. One thing I noticed after my first listen was that they are HEAVILY influenced by my favorite Stoner Rock band, Monster Magnet. Hell, the chorus of Nebula Mask is the exact rythem of King of Mars, they had a song called Gravity Well (which by the way is my favorite song on the album) which is the name of a song on Monster Magnet's God Says No, and a song called Monolith which is quite similar to Monster Magnet's new album Monolithic Baby (even though that came out just last year and Neanderthal Speedway came out in '99). But after I looked at the side notes Ed Mundell and Tim Cronin (guitarist and Drummer of Monster Magnet) were in 3 of the songs, I wondered what my strange atraction to this album was! I wish there was a way to give this a 4.5 stars but since there wasn't, I simply can't give this album 5 stars because for one, These guys have no idea of putting flow into albums. Putting Nebula Mask as the first song on the album was idiotic, also ending with Monolith, both great song just horribly arranged. they obviously had no idea how to put together a cohesive album. Also toward the middle of the album, they recycle quite a bit of fills and effects so it started getting a little stale, but then Cloud King comes on and from then on the album becomes massivley more interesting. Best songs off this album I would say are Nebula Mask, Firebreather, Cloud King, Gravity Well, and Monolith. even with my complaints this is still an amzing album, pick it up ASAP.
A good suite followed stoner rock.......2006-07-14
Aside from the fact it sounds like it was recorded in a garage (hey, let's face it, Not all of us can have nop notch recording equipment when beginning a record career), this record is some good listening. This band is in the vein of Kyuss, Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, and you get the point. With how cheap you can get this cd, it's worth your time.
Enough grooove and rock to melt tons of butter!!!.......1999-07-24
Pick a band, not one comes close to SOLARIZED. I was never into Indie labels but with no other choice I was forced. I could settle for Ricky Martian or that little teen-age lush but would never sleep sound again. Enter SOLARIZED the type of rock and pure skills that has become a mere shadow to major labels. All the good rock bands are slowly drifting away. I believe This CD and some other bands coming from the NJ, MD and MASS rock scenes are claiming that ground again. In a nutshell, if you want great music and you dig stoner and other kinds of rock, then this is your messiah. Amen!
This CD is a must have!!!!!.......1999-03-02
I first caught Solarized at the Court Tavern in New Brunswick, they played a set that literally left my jaw hanging on the floor! I later found out from their front man Jim Hogan, that this set would be on their forthcoming cd Neanderthal Speedway. I said back then I could'nt wait to get my hands on it. The Jersey Devils ep was a great appetizer, but now I'm ready for the main course. If you're tired of all of the homoginized milksop music they force feed on the radio, then get this album. You won't be disappointed.

Oh how I love this album.......2007-06-30
Rarely do I actually buy an album because usually I only like one or two songs and then the rest of the music shows just how little originality or actual musical understanding the artist has. Not so with this album, which I absolutely fell in love with at first listening, and it only gets better as I listen to all the layers. Just when you think you could sing along, Ian does something to change up the beat or melody, and he uses long musical passages or "white space" unexpectedly and thoughtfully in between the lyrics to drive home a deeper meaning. Really listen to "Time is My Everything" and see if you don't love it. Oh, how I love this album. This and Music of the Spheres just absolutely rock.
Sweet & Fantastic.......2006-01-09
Got into this through Paradise radio on internet. Didn't know Ian Brown but found out he was a member of "Stone roses". I gave away my Stone roses' album but I don't think I'll ever give this one.
Song "Solorized" got my attention, love the mood, the 'beu' bass and they way he's singing. I do get the rolling shoulders when I hear it. "Time is everything" makes me move my upper body a little more, I just love the horns' section. My hole body just slip into indecency when I play "One way ticket to paradise" a nice arabic electric guitar song with plenty of djambe.
I just love the way he blends music putting in mariachi, arabian sound, reggae, dance & trip hop.
Incredibly bad album!.......2005-10-19
I hadn't heard of Stone Roses before, but had heard Keep What You've Got on the radio and thought it was a pretty decent track. The DJ mentioned that Noel Gallagher produced the track, and that piqued my interest a little more. So, I took a chance and sought the album out.
The album is shockingly bad, especially in comparision to the two good songs on it - the leadoff track, and Keep What You've Got. The rest of the album is over-produced garbage. It reminds me of the 80's synth-pop that was so popular (and boring) in my childhood.
Do yourself a favor and track down the single of Keep What You've Got, and maybe download the first track off iTunes - but don't waste your time or money on this pathetic album.
Buena Opcion.......2005-07-09

great album - forget Stone Roses.......2005-05-14
I never liked the Stone Roses that much... But Solarized is great. its a mixture of rock, 60s psych and interesting dance beats. Nobody else is succesfully fusing these genres these days - except occasionally the Chemical Brothers on "The Test" or something. Lots of great songs, good lyrics, cool psychedelic sounds. Some kind of 60s spirit lives on in Ian Brown despite his violent bludgeoning of a bouncer in SF a few months back - check the web for the footage, its out there!

I originally picked up this album as part of a two for one deal at the University bookshop on campus (with Zero 7's SIMPLE THINGS), and I've very pleased ever since. It's got just the right balance of similarity and distinction between tracks, and the composition itself is great. The bonus is that it's an Auckland artist.
Great relaxing tunes for a "stay-in" kind of socialising, but also for just about anything else. Starting with "Hawaiian Silky" (1 of 9 tracks) the album goes over all sorts of ground, shifting from a semi-upbeat mode to a more peaceful-relaxing tone on "Twilight Baby". Particular favourties of mine are "Mr. Shakes" and "Me in your Shadow".

FOR YOUR "PRE-FADE LISTENING" PLEASURE!!!.......2004-02-17
Solarized is a brilliant and captivating assortment of downtempo, Dub, Funk, Reggae and ambient grooves...Another underrated, underexposed artist whose wonderfully produced music will probably go unheard to the masses! A shame, too. Pre-Fade Listening (a/k/a "PFL", "TVS", and "Chin Chillaz" on most downtempo albums) really offers something new and inticing for your aural (and maybe even oral too) pleasures. Every song on "Solarized" is a masterpiece!

Album Description
UK edition features an additional bonus track. One of music's true icons, Ian Brown releases his 4th solo album. Solarized is without doubt Ian's strongest album to date and includes a number of varied, brilliant tracks with numerous influences. From the opening track 'Longsight M13' (a song about the part of Manchester that still shows the legendary 'Free Ian Brown' graffiti) to the Mexican vibes of 'Time Is My Everything'; Ian has used a variety of styles and influences to make a brilliant album. The first single 'Keep What Ya Got' features another Manchester legend Noel Gallagher who co-wrote the track with Ian and plays guitar and backing vocals - an amazing track combining 2 of Manchester and British music's biggest icons. Universal. 2004.

Thick Wall of Sound.......2000-06-15
This album is great. The production could be better but, well worth the trade to keep the major labels tampering out of it. The direction of the album is somewhat singular but, what a great direction to head. This is in your face, straight on "stoner rock" as it is now called. Fat heavy fuzzy riffs consume every track. The guitars make a giant tank driving on the tracks of some solid grooving basslines. The drums pound down all the obstacles in the way of this space vehicle. This is head trippy, riff heavy, space rock. The vocals are agressive yet very sound on the head. I only wish they could be slightly more audible (part of the slighted production). You get some guest work by Ed Mundell and Tim Cronin of Monster Magnet as well. If you dig this genre of music and dig the likes of say Kyuss and early Magnet, this will definately be worth the price. Give it a couple of runs, I would bet you'll agree.

These bands rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-05-07
Have you ever heard this kind of rock on the radio.......... I DONT THINK SO thats because first of all these guys aren't pretty boys (and one girl) they look like worn out old hippies :-) but the music they put out is so awesome. My favorite of the two is solace great trippy rock, there isn't one song under 6 min. from them and at least two that go past the 8 min. mark, great improv. the kind of stuff you would hear jimi hendrix doing, and solarized mix of bluesy doom metal and space rock is great too. a must buy for the true music fan. By the way do what solace said if you want to get rid of crapy music and "kill your tv". thanks bye.

Wow. I'm stunned! Stunned I tell you!.......2005-02-20
I bought this CD because I'm a Stone Roses nut. I didn't think it would be good. I was right, but in the wrong direction. It's GREAT!!! See, I never thought Ian Brown would be so good following the Stone Roses because his live performances with the Stone Roses, um, left a little to be desired. He seemed to be the least talented of the lads in the band; however, he's created a full-blown classic here if you ask me.
Melody, modernness, great lyrics, horns, guitars, bass, computers, emotion, mysticism...this CD has it all. It's a VERY good CD. Have no fear picking this one up Stone Roses fans and everyone else. It's a must-buy!
More Monkey Business.......2005-02-08
In 1996, The Stone Roses could have been the greatest band of the decade. Instead they break up after two albums. Other bands steal the attention away. The music landscape changes. Ian Brown has been an influence all the way, especially on Oasis. Ian Brown released his first solo album around that time. After three albums and a load of touring he has the attention of the masses again. He was on the cover of NME in 2004. Is he now going to conquer America? It's part of the plans apparently. Brown played in California for the first time in a decade in September 2004. Some new songs like "Longsight M13" are excellent. "Time Is My Everything" recalls the sounds of Arthur Lee and Love. "Upside Down" is his most political song. That is more of a concern when you get older. Some songs reflect his experiences with collaborations with UNKLE and other techno dudes. "Keep What Ya Got" is his collaboration with Noel Gallagher. It is an excellent song and anthem. It's amazing that Ian Brown has created a powerful body of work. He has not just rested on his laurel. He has kept it up to date.
One way ticket to paradise.......2005-02-03
My favourites are Keep What Ya Got, One Way Ticket to Paradise, Kiss Ya Lips, Upside Down, Longsight M13, and Time is My Everything. I like the sounds and styles on these songs, it is nice to have someone using influences from other countries, especially someone who is such a Manc. And to be having songs like this not because it is the cool new sounds but because this is what he likes. And Ian writes really interesting lyrics and has a great and unique style all his own. I only wish Canada's version had the bonus track 'happy ever after'. It is a great little instrumental that sounds like a continuation of 'one way ticket to paradise'. It should have been a track on this album and not just in the UK, we are a Commonwealth. Then it would have got 5 stars from me. Is there a Duke of Niagara Falls?
best one yet.......2005-01-19
this album along with his other solo albums will be out on Feb. 22nd 2005.
