Like Nickel Creek and the Duhks (and Alison Krauss and Union Station before them), Crooked Still employ bluegrass elements as a springboard for an eclectic, expansive dynamic. Behind the sweetly ethereal and occasionally jazzy vocals of Aoife O' Donovan, the interplay of Gregory Liszt's banjo, Rushad Eggleston's cello (both bowed and flatpicked), and Corey DiMario's double bass gives the young New England band a sound that is closer to chamber-grass than hoedown. Though none of the material on this label debut is original, the transformations typically are, with the murder balladry of "Little Sadie" given a surprisingly sprightly reading, Bob Dylan's early "Oxford Town" taken at double-time speed, and Robert Johnson's "Come On in My Kitchen" sounding more meditative than bluesy. The band and veteran producer Lee Townsend enlist a number of guests for harmony and instrumental support, but it's plain that the drummerless quartet has the talent and musical vision to deliver on this album's considerable promise. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars Alternative old-time music? Bluegrass with brains?.......2007-07-28

What a good band. This cd has a well-balanced mix of lively and low-key, sad and soothing songs and tunes. For me, having cello in the mix gives the arrangements something fresh and soulful. "Shaken by a low sound" works both as a "listening cd" and as great background music.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Father's Bluegrass.......2007-07-23

My wife and I had never heard of Crooked Still when they opened for Chris Smither last fall at The Birchmere, in Alexandria, Virginia. So when someone at our table said that they were "a bluegrass band," we were a little disappointed, not really being bluegrass fans. Well, these four musicians are not your father's bluegrass band. (We got a hint of this even before they started to play, when, during set-up, Rushad Eggleston, their cellist, came out to tune his cello. Dressed in a flashy red-white-and-blue rodeo shirt, wearing a coonskin cap, and with a vaguely wild look in his eyes, Eggleston tuned his instument, tested the sound, and then, before returning backstage, gently kissed his cello before laying it in its stand.) From the first tune to the last, Crooked Still just blew us - and everyone else in the place - away. Imagine traditional "bluegrass" music rethought, infused with true passion and soul, and performed by a group of consummate young musicians with an authentic artistic sensibility, and you pretty much have Crooked Still. I cannot recommend this CD - or their first, "Hop High" - highly enough. If you're a fan of acoustic music, you should also seek out a live performance by these musicians. (Seeing firsthand the energy with which Rushad Eggleston plays his cello is, alone, worth the price of admission.)

5 out of 5 stars hauntingly beautiful.......2007-05-14

my wife and i heard aoife o'donovan a couple of times when she was one of the singers with wayfaring strangers. when we were perusing the concert schedule at the somerville theatre my wife recognized her name as the vocalist for the band crooked still. we decided to give it a try but we weren't sure what to expect. within the first 10 seconds of the concert i was in love with the group. we travelled over to vermont later that month to hear them again and then travelled down to club passim in cambridge a couple of months later for a tuesday 10 o'clock at night concert to try out new material. we're going to see them again in july. i've bought four copies of each of their cd's, one copy for us and the others for friends. i am thinking of rewriting my will and leaving everything to aoife if she will sing at my funeral.

i really like wayfaring strangers and have lent my wayfaring strangers cd's to friends and relatives. hardly anyone cares for them as much as i do and i understand that it can take some getting used to. crooked still is not like that. it is so accessible that i think just about anyone would like it and some people will love it.

So, what do you get when you combine a lead singer with an airy, sultry, velvety smooth voice, a rocking double bass, a banjo player that actually earned his Ph.D. from MIT, and a cellist that's totally bonkers? You get Crooked Still, a band who's unique style of bluegrass music is turning heads wherever they play. I had the fortune of stumbling across these guys at Merlefest and I was hooked from the first song. Their style of music is generally referred to as "Alternative Bluegrass"; basically, they take a traditional song, break it down, and then add their own unique rhythm and melody. These guys take a _very_ creative approach to bluegrass/American folk music (for example, flat-picking a cello), and if your listening habits tend towards the more traditional approach, this may not be the band for you. As good as they are, I'm hoping at some point they will start creating some original material. Also, as many have noted, their second album "Shaken by a low sound" lacks the freshness and edge of both their first album and the live performances of the songs on the album--though that may reflect the influence of the label rather than a conscious decision by the band. Bottom line: if you can only purchase one Crooked Still album, get the first one, "Hop High". If you get a chance to see this band live, do so. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Plant's Overlooked Break From, And Continuation Of, The Zeppelin Legacy.......2007-07-30

SHAKEN 'N' STIRRED is Robert Plant's great overlooked album. In fact, almost every young woman I've known has needed to wear makeup just to get asked for a dance to it. Perhaps the reason why this album never took its place in my friends' advice to me on expressing emotions the way Plant's other solo albums did during the 90s is because while it could be seen as a continuation of where Led Zeppelin might have gone had drummer John Bonham not died as a result of his drinking, it can also be seen as a break from the Led Zeppelin legacy, plus it was his last album with his first solo band. Hopefully, though, time will bring about a reassessment of this wonderful album, which showed Plant experimenting with electronics and dance music. Maybe that way, a person who has T-shirts with this album cover won't get nominated for WHAT NOT TO WEAR, which would be nice, as it is equally as good as Plant's other solo CDs.

On his third album, singer-piano thumper Phil Vassar has made a couple of wise choices. He brought his own band into the studio while spending more of his own studio time tickling the ivories. With entertaining and insightful piano ballads like "Gone by Dawn," "Amazing Grace," and the stirring personal anthem "Black and Whites," Vassar emerges as something of a contemporary country-pop answer to Billy Joel. He's a little less convincing on evanescent chart fodder like "What Happens in Vegas" and the lusty "I'll Take That as a Yes," but when he lets his obvious pop-rock influences roam free on the keyboard he sounds masterful and built to last. --Bob Allen

This is a must for any music collection. Phil Vassar's talent is one you have to hear, you will become a fan in no time after one listen!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Country Performer Ever.......2006-02-27

Buy the CD, and go see this performer in concert. He will out-do any showman, captivate you with his stage presence, and sing his heart out with show stoppers like "I'll take that as a Yes!" and many, many other songs that take you back to simpler times in life. Get this CD first, then, as soon as you are Vassarized and a Phan Phor Liphe,(the PH's are for PHil) check out the other CD's....

5 out of 5 stars Best Yet.......2005-11-28

All of Phil's cd's are wonderful, but this is his best by far. It really shows his range. From the rocked up Hot Tub song to the slow Billy Joelesque Black and Whites and everything in between. I'm now waiting for him to make a CD of all of his song's that other people have done.

By: Maxine Macpherson

Phil Vassar's country is different. Maybe it's the piano instead of the typical guitar. Maybe is the extraordinary energy of this performer coming out in his music or maybe it's the lovely, simple stories he tells with the songs he co-writes. Actually, it's all of these things, at least that's the case with Vassar's newest CD, Shaken Not Stirred.

At a CD release party in Lowell, MA in September, Vassar thrilled his audience with several cuts from the new album, including the first single and recent #1, "In a Real Love." This song is a great example of Vassar's rocking piano style and lyrics that create a visual picture for the listener:

"Well, I was 18 makin' minimum wage
With a letterman jacket and a Chevrolet
I thought I was cool, yeah, I ruled the school."

There are several songs that continue or build on the theme of a young man's dreams that have to give way to growing up. "I Miss the Innocence" is the best example of this loss:

"A crazy boy and a pretty girl
Man, life was simple then
Nothin' that we had to do
And no one to answer to
`Til reality stepped in
We're growing up
We've changed so much."

Vassar told the audience he spent six-months creating and recording the new CD. He co-wrote 10 of the 12 songs included on the CD. He also broke with Nashville tradition, using his own band members instead of studio musicians and writing with a variety of people including his bus driver. He talked about his early work experience as a bartender and that's the subject of the song "Here To Forget." Vassar loves to return to youthful themes, found love ("I'll Take That As a Yes"), getting over lost love ("Gone By Dawn") and shared plans that never seem to workout ("Dancin With Dreams").

The piano, always present in a Vassar song, is even more pronounced on this CD. Especially good is the country and jazz love song "Nobody Knows Me Like You" and, what Vassar claims is an "ode to my piano," the very blues-like "Black and White." This last is a real change in style and it works beautifully. It is obvious that the piano is more than an instrument for this singer - it's a second voice.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a Phil phan!.......2005-08-28

Okay, Phil Vassar sure ain't your "traditional country" artist, but he's a GREAT performer all the same! This CD does a great job of showcasing his piano skills and unique vocal abilities, and has some really catchy, stick-in-your-head songs. A couple tracks are more "light and jazzy" than country, but they're great all the same. Besides the singles released to radio (like "In a Real Love" and "I'll Take That as a Yes"), there are other great songs on this album. My fave is probably "Nobody Knows Me Like You," one of those love songs that makes you go, "Aww..."

The Independence Day composer has gathered a batch of marquee singers--Chrissie Hynde, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, and Iggy Pop included--to salute the Bond mystique. These songs are imbedded in the collective unconscious, and the over-the-top arrangements on the Aimee Mann-sung "Nobody Does It Better" and Martin Fry's "Thunderball" are a treat. Better yet are the electronic, club-ready tracks by Leftfield and Propellerheads (doing "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"). --Jeff Bateman

1 out of 5 stars On a Need to Know Basis.......2006-10-05

This CD must be on a "need to know basis" because I sure don't get it. I do not understand the mission of David Arnold's James Bond Project. I do not understand the point of the music. There's a lot of sound, some noise, some melody and I can't even describe the rest. How could this CD come from the same person who composed the scores for TOMORROW NEVER DIES, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH and DIE ANOTHER DAY ? I hope his score for CASINO ROYALE (2006) will be good.

4 out of 5 stars Shaken and Satisfied!.......2006-07-20

When I first heard this CD a long time ago in a galaxy far far away... I knew I was destined to purchase it. The Composistion from David Arnold is fantastic! Whenever I play the CD in my quality Personal Computer I realize how much I enjoy this music. If you need to relax, if your in the mood for adventure, if you have a vehicle with a CD player and a long stretch of road to cruise down, then listening to this music is a must. Go Bond GO! Thumbs up to David Arnold and his crew. Great product!

1 out of 5 stars is there a 0 - star for rating?.......2003-02-24

I bought this not having listened to any tracks at all, but had read that some of the tracks were great (especially the Propellorheads's one)

My goodness...this disk has, after a couple of listens, entered my never-to-be-played category!

Most of the covers are horrid. Nobody Does It Better was good, except for the LP-like scratching that is clear at the beginning (at least on my disk which is not actually scratched!)

The James Bond Theme is worse than execrable. Bears almost no resemblance to the fantastic original!

The only track that's okay is Iggy Pop's 'All the time in world' mainly coz it doesn't try to be too different to the original.

All in all, I can't believe anyone released this (let alone the composer of the recent Bond movies). What a disgrace to the original music of the great John Barry and Monty Norman.

I'm a huge fan of Bond movies, especially their music (apart from the last few films). I enjoy remixes and some techno style music as well, but this album is awful. The listenable tracks are the ones closest to the original (except for reversing the gender of the singer!).

5 out of 5 stars Wait for the inevitable SACD and/or DVD-Audio version.......2002-11-24

If any CD cried out to be released in high-res audio, it's this one. You may have heard a couple of these songs on the Propellerhead's CD (History Repeating) or on the radio. But this is the type of complex electronic music just tailor-made for SACD or DVD-Audio, which despite the failure of the music industry to promote properly, sounds amazing. Wait and see. They'll put this one out again. It's guaranteed $$.

5 out of 5 stars good to the end.......2002-06-14

the songs where done good and thunderball was cool and live and let die was more punk. russia with love was like you were in a russian night club very low key. iggy good job on we have all the time in the world on secret service was like going to a rocky nightclub the same for the bond theme. moonraker was a good slow start but good into the tune we love. nobody dose it better was diffrent.

A good lounge disc. Not the best to be found but for the low price it is recommended highly. It really doesnt sound like James Bond music but it stands strong on its own. Take like a Tuesday off from work, have your special someone over, put this disc on, pour the martinis and just freakin go for it! Ahh, if life were only that good!

3 out of 5 stars If Bond Listened to Elevator Music.......2000-08-10

The song is not what I expected when I bought it but certainly a good cd. The bond theme lacks the adrenaline pumping sensation of the original but is a lovely laid back version. The Man with the Golden Gun bares no resemblence to the original song. Goldfinger is a great song, it has perfect instrumentation, and is very swingy. After the last song is a "hidden" track of the bond theme(how fitting). Undoubtedly the best song on the cd. Jazzy and a great piano substitute of John Barry's electric guitar. The non-bond songs are fabulous. Especially number four.

5 out of 5 stars This is a gift... to be shared.......2001-07-27

I have shared this with many friends who were surprised that they didn't know who this was! What is really fun is the staying power these tunes and beautiful music have.

I received a note from two people I gave this to as a gift three years ago. The note said: "We were listening to 'Shaken Not Stirred...' Thought of you and became inspired. Among other things about how fortunate were are to know you as a friend."

        Three years, going on four.

Are you a thinker? A lover? Someone who appreciates real art, skill and timing and all? Someone who's forgotten something, or missing something from your life? Two words: David Benoit. Can you feel the magic coming back into your life, already?

4 out of 5 stars Really Good Variety for light jazz fans.......1999-05-16

Tracks from this one get a lot of play on light jazz-format stations, and deservedly so. Sort of a quiet-listening CD, although the title track is a James-Bond-esque thing which is a lot of fun. "I went to bat for you" and "Sarah's theme" are smokey-room saxophone jazz things. "Jaqueline" is a beautiful piano etude. "Carmel" is more symphonic in nature. If you like light jazz, it's easily worth the price.

When they don't list the ARTIST by the track listing, we should know that they didn't go to the effort (or money) to get the real artists. This happens FREQUENTLY on 'collection' CD's.

1 out of 5 stars This Album Is Bogus!.......2007-01-11

I bought this album under the impression that this was all the Bond themes from the movies sung by the original singers who made the songs famous. Not even close! The singers used to "interpret" the songs are unknowns and the album is a giant rip-off. It should have been stated quite clearly in the description that these were not the original singers. Do not buy this album if you are looking for the original recording artists!
