Having been pioneers of dance music since the early 80’s in Germany, the long awaited second album has finally arrived from Berlin dance music maestros Martini Bros.

The Martini Bros are DJ Clé and Mike Vamp, whom within the past four years have developed one of the most interesting and influential dance projects with their lively, individual songs; sometimes what starts as a sparse rhythm-and vocal-sample framework condenses with a funky guitar and an 80’s Georgio Moroder-style bass into music that hits the nerve of the time.

They’ve even captured international attention having worked with DJ Koze & The Tease, Tok Tok, and Canada’s electropop wonderkid Tiga as well as being nominated for Best Video in the German Dance Awards. The duo was also asked to debut their live show at the premiere party for the film Run Lola Run.

Loves The Machines is Martini Bros’ second Poker Flat album and it underlines once more what everybody knew anyway: The Martini Bros are definitively one of the most interesting acts and producers in the scene today. There is no need to categorize their music as they always sound NOW.

Amazon.com essential recording

This is a great series of recordings. Leonard Slatkin has generally chosen the right balance of music for the composers used in the series (with terrific cover art from Thomas Hart Benton). This disc is devoted to Copland's film music. The treat here is a version of The Heiress Suite reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Copland's talent for writing for films rested in his ability to identify and maintain themes, at the same time not slacking on the transitional details. This belongs in any Copland collection. --Paul Cook

one of slatkins best recordings.with copland hes on, the sound on this cd is ok,not as good as his telarc recordings witch i think are his better recordings but this one is one of them to.

Aaron Copland: the Norman Rockwell of film scoring.......2004-06-14

When I purchased this collection I was already very familiar with Mr. Copland's more popular fanfaric motifs. I was astounded at how much I enjoyed the wonderful division of both sweeping dramatic themes and friendly, home-grown melodies. His film scores for the 1939 'Of Mice and Men' and the 1940 'Our Town' are a testament to classic films set in simpler times. The 'Red Pony' tracks for which the compilation is named are a magical digression from the listener's pre-conceived notions of Copland western fare. When one expects "Rodeo" (arguably one of Copland's most famous themes) one instead receives a gentler and sometimes powerfully moving score. The crowning jewel of this collection, however; is the beautiful suite from his Academy Award winning score for William Wyler's 1949 film of 'The Heiress.' When listening to this magnificent piece of musical history I am reminded how so many great scores are unavailable to listeners of today, and only through recreation and re-recordings can we re-capture those glimpses of film score artistry. I can only hope that many lost or hard to find works continue to be found or recorded so that film score and music lovers in general can continue to discover and rediscover the joy and beauty of our masters in film composing.

Great recording of definitive American film music.......2004-04-08

In a way, filmgoers have been listening to Copland's film scores nearly every time they go to the cinema, since film composers have been shamelessly ripping off Copland for the last half-century or so. When you listen to the "Our Town" suite, do you get the nagging feeling that you have heard this music somewhere before? No doubt you have, in dozens of derivitave film scores from the 1980's and 1990's, sometimes (shamelessly) right down to the exact chord progressions.

How nice it is then to be able to go back to the source, and have rendered in so superb a fashion as it is by Slatkin & the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Slatkin, as usual, upholds his reputation as one of the leading interpreters of American music.

This CD contains the premier recording of "The Heiress Suite," which is a delight to listen to, and of course the fairly well-known "Red Pony" music. Is their a more quintessential piece of "Western" music than the "Walk to the Bunkhouse?" How does a jewish boy from Brooklyn nail it on the head so perfectly, anyway?

Other selections include "Music for Movies," a collection of bits & pieces from an assortment of Copland-scored movies that Copland arranged in 1943, and "Music for Radio," an earlier composition that isn't really "movie music," but fits well with the rest of the compositions on this CD.

Instead of wasting your time on movie soundtracks that are nothing more than just derivitave hack jobs, listen to music by a composer who had truly mastered his craft.

This album is worth it just to get the world premiere recording of "The Heiress Suite" reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Also of note are Walk to the Bunkhouse from "The Red Pony" and New England Countryside. Leonard Slatkin conducts these pieces with great emotional feel that states that this is the same America that Copland wanted to us to embrace.

Amazing!!.......2007-02-23

Great music performed by one of the best orchestras in the world. What more can you ask for?Ron Goodwin is a genius. The music that he wrote is incredible. His best pieces are featured here on this cd. From the great marches like " Force ten from Navarone" to great romantic sounding pieces like "Deadly Stranger" and the love theme from 633 Sqadron. I also really like the selections from "Monte Carlo or Bust"(almost seven minutes long) and the selections from "Those magnificent men in Their flying machines" (six minutes long). Rumon Gamba and the BBC Philharmonic do a great job performing all the pieces, and add another great cd to the Chandos movie series. This is a must have for fans of Ron Goddwin or great film music in general. It well deserves the 5 stars and maybe even more.

Ron Goodwin is a fine composer. I particularly enjoyed listening to the music from the early 1960's Miss Marple films, starring Margaret Rutherford. But, to let one know; the Marple music is different from most of the Goodwin scores on this CD. His music is mostly of the rousing march or military variety.

This CD provides a range of music mainly from films and concerned with epic war dramas all from the pen of the well known Ron Goodwin. Films such as 633squadron, submarine - X, operation strongbow, force ten from navarone, where eagles dare are just some which are represented. I was particularly looking for the title'Those magnificant men in their flying machines' to add to a slide show of vintage planes in flight and on exhibition. This fitted the bill just fine.

Perfect

I found this CD in chicago, where this brit now lives, and the tunes and themes are such a retrieval cue for sunday afternoons watching these old stiff upper lip black and white movies on tv. Just what I needed, although the addition of 4 weddings is slightly odd. Good quality recordings...:-)

Remarkably moving music.......2001-11-17

I had no idea what I was getting when I bought this CD; it has become one of my most listened-to albums. Arnold had a genius for romantic melody that moves the soul. I believe his fame will grow in the 21st century as the silliness of modern atonal music is forgotten and the eternal values of melody and beauty regain their place in western culture.

My favorite CD of 2001so far.......2001-04-22

I Heard of Jake Mandell through the Clicks n Cuts v1 compilation, and then bought "Underling", which is a much more ambient sound swooping low sound to it (but still enjoyable).

So today I bought this cd and haven't stopped playing it - reminds me of Jega's Geometry in parts but warmer and with better beats - and it's actually hummable/danceable stuff instead of a lot of tweaky blips/bleeps.

crowning achievement to date.......2001-02-07

having only heard mandell's "parallel processes," and liking it well enough, i picked up "love songs..." a previous reviewer was right in saying that it strays between solid sounds and a more experimental feel. in the liner notes mandell claims that these songs really are an expression of his love of machines, although after the second listen i too felt wooed by the intelligent structure of the songs. just when the discord is about to break loose a sparkling gem of melody or near-ambient pulls the listener back into the scheme of things. a really dynamic work that conveys a sense of going places. the track titles themselves are actually the sequence of a poem, a device which conveys more motion in and of itself.
