5 out of 5 stars A perfectly selected Collection of Electronic- Pop/Rock.......2004-04-22

Produced by the label that is involved in the Barcelona Techno Festival of the same name ("Sonar"), this is a collection that eschews dance-oriented music, and instead focuses squarely on the cerebral side of electronic music. More importantly, focuses on electronic music that is been fused with elements of intelligent pop / Indie-rock music (think `Brian Eno-esque' levels of sublimely composed electronic Pop).

So although the list of various performers, come in around 16 different artists, there is no shortage of quality on board. `Lali Puna' opens proceedings perfectly with the indie electronic elegance of "Bi Pet", that shows how expertly handled (& Unappreciated) this genre can truly be. Those that know their Indie Pop, should have heard of "Dntel", his contribution (from his "Life Is Full of Possibilities" album), is subtly textured Glitchy-pop, with a warm female vocal with washes of bittersweet shoegazing, that is as touching as it is beautiful. Icelanders "Múm" offer up an altogether glacial take on the theme, with delicate piano & brushed percussion, that recalls `Sigur Rós" in restrained arrangment on their highly accomplished single "Finally, we are No One". `The Notwist's' breakbeats over indie arrangements, on their "Solitare" effort, lift the tempo of the album significantly, and its here that the album moves more into a more experimental region. Which disproves the theory that not all the music contained here is of a downtempo nature, and feels like an energetic "Belle And Sebastian", that combines quirky wordplay with Organs, Keyboards & String Arrangements that completely justifies the band strong cult following. "Mouse on Mars", who themselves are no strangers to the word `Experimental' prove that they are one of the most consistently brilliant performers out there with their "Cache Coeur Naïf" and confirms they're standing as Post-Rock/Experimental techno's finest exponents. "Lb's" cover of `David Bowies - Ashes to Ashes' gets a full electro makeover, and the results (although never scaling the heights of the original), feels like a refined `Squarepusher' at his most conservative, and remains a more than worthwhile reinterpretation of a dearly loved song.

For those curious about buying this album, the quality of artists & music isn't really the issue here, as this certainly feels like something of a labour of love, with each artist carefully picked, to complement the album and a (slight) coherency maintained throughout. If glancing through the track listing, you recognise at least 3 artists (or Tracks), then this compilation is almost squarely aimed at you....as it seems to be a collection of the finest exponents in the genre that you should seek out Immediately.

Those that don't recognise the vast majority of the work here, may still want to make the investment, as it's works as a gloriously sophisticated downtempo album, that doesn't necessarily require a particular mood or frame of mind to appreciate, and proves to be a incredibly worthwhile introduction into the specialist genre of Electronic Pop/Rock.
