Spin
...the musical equivalent of a very good kisser - the kind that intimates trouble, heartbreak and guilt on contact.

Product Description
At L'Altra's captivating core are Lindsay Anderson and Joseph Costa. Binaries abound in supple, seductive unions: the Joe and Lindsay symbiosis, the digital & analog sway, the double helix of masculine and feminine back-and-forth (according to a number of Romance languages, L'Altra translates as "the feminine other"). Now Different Days, L'Altra's third full-length release, marks a band renaissance.

Besides finding a new and welcome home with Chicago's Hefty Records, Lindsay and Joe have transformed what was once a revolving-door collective into a "duo and friends" by employing the production prowess of labelmate Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv. Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley) contributed horn arrangements, top avant-garde cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm laid down extraordinary strings, and pulseprogramming's Marc Heller is credited with additional programming. Lindsay has performed on tour with Will Oldham as a vocalist and keyboardist, and L'Altra has played with Tortoise, Smog, Rebecca Gates and Solex.

4 out of 5 stars You can dream again........2005-09-27

How sweet - the two lesser known Dream Academy albums at a budget price.
Given that most radio oriented material (i.e., hits) rely on beats, hooks and heavy dynamic probably doomed the Dream Academy to one hit wonder status after the global success of "Life In A Northern Town." That song relied deeply on atmospherics and carried onto radio on the strength of its "Hey ma ma ma" hook. At best, the most Dream Academy could hope for was to replicate that first single and hope the warm memories of their debut could help them build their success to the next level.

With "Remembrance Days," you can certainly say they tried. "Indian Summer," the melancholy diary of a May - September romance gallantly tries to recreate the mood of that first hit, but comes up short. The blame partially rests on producers Richard Daschut, Lindsay Buckingham and Hugh Padgham, who seemed intent on transforming much of Dream Academy's baroque pop more into the slicker sheen of Thompson Twins or Phil Collins. (Think "In The Air Tonight" while listening to "Humdrum.") That's not to say that "Remembrance Days" is any less an album than the debut. In fact, the best song here, "The Power To Believe" was featured in the John Hughes movie "Planes Trains and Automobiles," a song like "In Exile" shows increased musical sophistication from the debut, and "In The Hands Of Love" could have been a hit ala Thompson Twins' "Doctor Doctor." It's the album's sole cover song that is "Remembrance Days'" weakest moment, The Korgis' ballad "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime."

All in all, a marvelous moody piece of work. Worth seeking out if Renaissance music from the mid 80's is your cup of tea. 4 stars.

After the commercial indifference dealt to the Dream Academy's second album, the trio took a three year break between albums to regroup. When they reformed, it was with David Gilmour again in tow, but with this more pop than paisley effort. "A Different Kind of Weather" found the band scrambling to catch up with sounds that they were never a part of in the first place. Sugary confections like "Lucy September" held more echoes of Duran Duran/Thompson Twins than Pink Floyd and Paul Simon, and much of the baroque magic that made the first two albums so unique had disappeared.

It's obvious that The Dream Academy still had aspirations to the atmospheric pleasantries of their original sound, best captured, oddly enough, on "A Different Kind Of Weather's" two cover songs. The orchestrated version of Tim Buckley's "It'll Never Happen Again" sounds like a natural outgrowth of Laird-Clowes' melancholy, and the Hindu chants that infuse John Lennon's "Love" made that song a "shoulda-been" hit from the period when Enigma was introducing the world to "Sadeness." But despite the ambition, it was also clear that the band had run out of ideas. The sad carnival sounds that close out "Not For Second Prize" provided a symbolic coda to not only "A Different Kind Of Weather," but to The Dream Academy's lifespan as well. 3 1/2 stars.

weird how there are no other reviews for the album. i guess if i had to try to describe the sound of this record, i would liken it to a more feminine postal service with less computer generated sounds while still containing an electronic element that is prominent, with equally stellar production. One of the two members of Telefon Tel Aviv produced the album, and it sounds absolutely gorgeous. The same technique used in Telefon Tel Aviv's two albums sounds as if it too has been implemented in the recording process, which is definitely a good thing. Seems to sound best when listened to during a quiet time, for it is quite emotional, reflective, and melodic. recommended.

Album Description

Droom is an exciting synthpop / futurepop band from Canada with a dramatic, dark sound. Their romantic lyrical approach and lush instrumentation reminds listeners of classic Xymox, while their pounding beats and driving basslines add a modern edge similar to bands like VNV Nation or Covenant. "128 1/2 Days" is the band's debut album, and it definitely marks them as a band to watch.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A dark-synth-pop gem.......2007-05-16

I purchased this album after sampling the two free songs downloaded from Amazon, "While We Can" & "Stay!". Needless to say, these two tracks were so wonderfully done and exhilarating that they actually gave me goosebumps. While these two club hits flowed with hard hitting, dance-able beats, the album actually encompasses a surprising assortment of introspective & melodic pieces.

"Sugar Crash" is slow, light and melodic, almost reminiscent of VNV's Airship, or Wolfsheim's Blind, though probably not as brilliantly done as either.

"Eyes like Oceans" is similarly pleasing. The beautiful melody is distant and somber, fittingly performed by the female vocalist. The entire arrangement reminds me of Anything Box's "All These Days Undone", but with a better vocal performance.

"A Thousand Ghosts" is another example of the slower/introspective pieces. The meandering melody is accompanied by a haunting piano score. The background effects on this piece appears to have been intentionally distorted. This may have been the cause for a previous reviewers' comment of "recorded through a telephone". I can see how this would bother some, though it didn't affect me.

Overall I was very pleased with the album. This is a "must have" if you're a fan of dark synth/EBM. It's definitely one of those albums that can stay in your playlist for months without tiring.

The only reason this album does not get the fifth star is really due to a personal preference. Most of the tracks are much too light on vocal. The human element takes a back seat to the elaborate synth tracks, as if the vocal is the background with the synth at the forefront. It's unfortunate, because Graham has a great voice and the songs could resonate that much more.

2 out of 5 stars Skip it.......2006-01-01

I think that by the amount of praise that this album receives that there's a lot of people out there that haven't listened to a whole lot of synth rock. After reading about how amazing this album is, I decided to buy it. Maybe my expectations were too high, but this is nothing at all above average. All the bad cliches of synthrock are present, along with a lot of bad goth rock cliches thrown in. Jackson is not that great a vocalist, he has an ok voice, but a truly great singer can turn a boring song into a masterpiece, through vocal melodies or charismatic singing, both of which Jackson lacks. On top of that, the songs get incredibly tedious to listen to due to the fact that most range from 5 to 7 minutes in length, and have little or no variation within, so basically, they're boring and repetative. The distortion on the vocals is incoherent and cheesy. This sounds like a really bad version of Assemblage 23 and Bella Morte. I guess this is ok for someone who's just starting to immerse themselves in the synthrock genre, but for the veterans out there, you've heard anything this album has to offer 100 times before.
I saw someone refer to Graham Jackson as the Robert Smith of synthpop??? Please...

3 out of 5 stars Sigh...I'm bored!.......2005-10-28

Droom has SUCH promise! I'm intoxicated by the first few tracks...but then...wait...has the track even changed to the next? I got bored the first time I listened to 128 1/2 Days, because it all sounds the same! And I've listened to it several more times, thinking maybe I'm just not used to the band yet to pick up the various colors of each song, but still the same reaction. Different lyrics...somewhat, but that is about it! I recommend skipping this album. Droom has a beautiful sound but there isn't enough variety between songs. I cannot say anything about the other albums...they could very well be better.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-06-10

Droom is really one of the best bands outhere, and this album is really amazing! But his second album called "Ten Songs" is even better! Buy anything you find by Droom is what I recommend!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but production values limit.......2004-06-22

I love synthpop and, don't get me wrong, this release certainly delivers. But it is two steps shy of "great" because the production values (mixing) are sub-par. Dunno who produced this puppy, but the mix is muddy. All the synthpop cliches that we love are here (yet a number of tracks borrow too much from VNV nation), and the voice of the singer is lovely, but the whole album sounds like it was recorded through a telephone at times. I see big things for the group in the future, and this album is promising, but as is, its amatuerish.

5 out of 5 stars One stop on the road to immortality.......2006-11-19

This is a more than competent CD transfer of acoustic recordings of Sir Nigel Playfair's legendary 1920s revivals of The Beggar's Opera and its sequel Polly. Quite sufficiemt to show why the Beggar;s Opera production, meant to fill a few weeks' gap at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, ran for three years. And while Gay's sequel was like most sequels, not up to the original, this recording is the only source for the second-best ballad opera.

1 out of 5 stars Must Stop Ordering When Drinking - Or Maybe I Got Foxed.......2006-09-02

Right. Can't remember what state of sobriety I was in when I ordered this cd and I may have missed some key clues about its nature. But I was so excited to find anything claiming to relate to Gay's "Polly" (which otherwise seems to have completely disappeared after it was censored in the 18th century - even internet wise) that I bought this cd. Turns out it is a cd version of some music originally recorded in the early 1920's. It is moderately interesting even for someone who is not primarily interested in antigue recordings (aka "scratchy records") because the style may be closer to that of the original performance. (There is no reason to think that common tastes were better in the 18th century than in 1920.) It is certainly different than contemporaneous performances of BO.

Don't mean to be sexist - which I am - but the duets, choreses and male performances seem to be less antigue than the soprano pieces. The broads are simply squeaky. Something to do with frequency loss in early recordings, I expect. On the other hand, the bass songs are equally abrasive and archaic.

Even the notes about "Polly" in this cd are disappointing. No mention of the history of "Polly", no mention of the source for the music. Try googling for a link for Gay and Polly. If you find one, be sure to post - I would love to know.

Unless you are an academic involved with some of the most obscure corners of the history of recorded music, I would forget this one. Instead, root for someone to find and record Gay's Polly. And buy a more modern interpretation of the Beggar's Opera. I have certainly heard antique recordings restored more vibrantly than this cd - but I would think that depends to a large extent on the quality of what you have to start with.

The only reason I gave it 2 stars (for some reason, Amazon refuses to record my change from 1 to 2 stars; but that is computers for you) instead of 1 was because of I love the melodies of the songs so much. But I will also admit that it is possible that Gay have been lucky that Polly was suppressed - the melodies and lyrics are not nearly as good as BO. On the other hand, this cd is so antique that is an unfair basis for judgment, But what the H!
