Album Description

Undoubtedly the leading figure of the Disco Dance movement, Boris Midney - composer, arranger, producer, sound designer, engineer and accomplished multi-instrumentalist - literally built his life from scratch after defecting from the Soviet Union in his teens. Forever known as the man who took disco to a higher level, to this day - he has never recorded under his own name in a studio which he did not build himself. In New York City he built America's first 48 track recording studio and called it "Eras" in honor of the new era of dance music just beginning to bubble. Musicians and engineers nick-named it "The Enterprise" because of its futuristic high tech feel. Midney's first two solo albums recorded under the aliases of USA - European Connection and Beautiful Bend ascended to #1 on the dance charts and left reviewers gasping for descriptions like "avant garde"…"original"…."art". His next two albums recorded under the aliases "Caress" and "Masquerade", were as individualized as the ideas of the man who wrote, arranged, recorded, produced and played all the instruments on them, creating a marriage of music and technology that yielded breathtaking results. "Come Into My Heart" from the USA European Connection rose to #1 on Billboard's Club Play singles chart. In 1979 Robert Stigwood convinced Boris to disco-fy the music from the new play "Evita" and Boris created a hit disco album of the same name which rose to #1 on Billboard's Dance chart. His albums are still highly revered by today's producers for their advances in technology and great dance music production. We proudly present this digital collection of his amazing catalog including rare tracks and previously undiscovered masterpieces.

but seriously, wouldn't it be great to have a CD remaster of the FULL Evita LP by Festival and the full Midney interpretations of Empire Strikes Back instead of just highlights of each?

Whoever assembled this 2-Disc CD had positive compassion for the true blue underground disco lovers, or maybe thought Boris Midney was too good an artist to pass up. Whatever the case, it's a true godsend, because many of these tracks I had put into storage after my '75 to '85 stint as nightclub disc jockey. As much as I relish the good 'ol days of vinyl, I welcome the newer formats of IPods, MP3s, downloads, CDS, and video clips. Heaving tons of vinyl from party to party, was work unto itself, even when enjoying the pleasure it had given.
The two basic tracks of Love's Coming/Baby Love and Come Into My Heart are all here in full entirety by USA Connection. Disco classics!!!!!
The rest is a pure interesting travel through the mind of one of the most innovative composer/producers of the dance era. I must admit I had the pleasure of visiting, also, some of the most highly regarded disco nightclubs on the westcoast of California from Bay area to San Diego, and the kind of music played here is best suited for those clubs with the biggest speakers. I just wished I had taken the time to visit New York, and especially Studio 54. I'm sure many songs here were played there over the short years of that notorious nightclub reign. (But I was too busy).

Boris Midney is a talented genius! Not only would I highly recommend buying the anthology but I would try to find the original LP's as well.Superb!I'm a disco lover but I must say that so far Midney is definately my favorite.Keep up the excellent work Boris!

Newly remastered version of the original anthology........2005-08-01

Well, we all know what a great collection this is from the father of Euro Disco, the big difference here over the 1999 release is the remastering, plain and simple - improved sound and artwork make this edition the one to have.

The saga in Midney's composition and style is often moody in pace with elements of uplifting melodies in overtone. Set to rhythm and motion are steady conflicts and struggles between a slight sadness and a haunting beauty seemly intertwined within a multi-layered rhythmic structure. Yet, delivering a classically orchestrated and a well-balanced arrangement. Typically, a Midney production begins with an eerie suspense and dramatic intro building upon layers followed by constant thumping drumbeat throughout, foot-tapping percussions roll-in, rumbling base line along with the Alto Sax or clarinet often blend in beautifully. As always and as expected from the master there are the cleaver-sharp waves of shrieking violins gently swirling - fade in and out leading listener into an astonishing instrumental passage. Soft, sweet sensuous girly background vocals compliment the quirky lyrics - setting the stage for a fantasy/fairytale like base theme. The key element in Midney's style is his talent to spontaneously transcend into a shift in mood and pace - graciously, never compromising its flavor or intent. Most notable is his distinctive musical interpretations of love, joy and romance - which simply, cannot be bypassed or ignored.

Midney's trademark signature style is most prominent on the "Beautiful Bend", the obscure concept LP "Pinocchio" under the name "Masquerade", USA-European Connection's -"There a way into my heart", "Come Into My Heart" and of course, "Caress " which you will find within this two CD set. Sadly and surprisingly enough "Make That Feeling Come Again" is not part of this package. You will have to purchase the "Beautiful Bend" vinyl record or CD (a Midney essential).

Midney's music is not for the average listener, passer-by or the lighthearted. It is classic, stylish, clever, complex, bold, sensitive, lush and sweet. This is what makes him so effective and charismatic.

For obvious reasons, Midney's music requires a "thinking" listener with a sophisticated ear. Midney stands alone, a class act that never disappoints, not even the most demanding listener or devoted hustle dancer alike.

Good idea - could have been better.......2004-12-25

OK, I've been a Boris Midney fan since the first time I heard "Come into my Heart" played at 12 West (Alan Dodd?). The entire room got "disco whiplash"! (This was back in the day when the serious dancers were very into the experience; they wanted to know who did what, etc., in many cases, even if they were on their third gorilla biscuit - think Roher 714.) "What is this? It's fabulous!"
Coupla things:
1 - It's obvious that these tracks were not laid-out by a club DJ - certainly not one that played them when they were new! The intros on some tracks (if they weren't the 'lead cut' on a side) are chopped off - rendering them difficult to use for mixing purposes.
2 - There is definitely some filler here.
3 - I wish they included the tracks sequed the way they were on the original Lps (instead of fading them out)! E.g., "That's the Meaning" into "Boogie Motion", etc.
4 - Where the ____ is "Make that Feeling Come Again" from Beautiful Bend???? Not on this collection! Serious oversight, in my opinion!
5 - Does not sound as if it were remastered in its entirety - not by a longshot.
Overall, though, it's nice to have MOST of this handy for driving, etc. Brings back memories of a much simpler, much looser and much more fun time in history!

A classical disco producer.......2002-02-17

In this kind of music it is one of the very best producers
from late seventies disco-music, aswell as there is small recording tricks ahead of the time here and there.
The sound quality and recording interpretation is at top.
Music content: it is rare there is so good standard on so many tracks as it is on this double CD.

Where do I start? In the mad gay oriented daze of disco, there were a few pure music driven composers/producers. Of these the greatest were Giorgio Moroder, Alec R. Costandinos and...Boris Midney. Like Barry White, Boris took the basic 4/4 disco dance rhythm and turned it into a hypnotic experience. Purely melodic, Boris managed to compose long dance tracks which gave the dance crowd time to get into the deceptively simple tracks and raise themselves into a state of pure dancing ecstasy. These tracks show off the brilliance of a man who truly believes that dance music can be both energizing and intelligent.

If any producer deserves high marks for music during the Disco era, it is by far Boris Midney! Not your typical top-40 Disco, but rather the long, symphonic, hardcore drummin', violin playin, hustlin' disco. Real music worth listening to!
