Irving Berlin's Wild West Show-themed romp Annie Get Your Gun has long been a Broadway evergreen, including a wildly successful modern revival starring Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat. But its original 1950 MGM film translation was fraught with production problems and recasting; Judy Garland was initially signed to star and even recorded her vocal numbers before being dismissed (due largely to her notorious personal problems) and replaced by Betty Hutton. While several of Garland's performances as Annie Oakley have been released on other compilations, this generous, 31-cut release not only marks the CD debut of the film's original soundtrack (originally just eight tracks), it compiles all of the various Garland versions (including the first release of a spectacular stereo Garland version of "There's No Business Like Show Business") onto its second half, essentially re-creating the "Annie that never was," in addition to the first complete release of the Hutton score. Also included is a superbly illustrated and well-annotated booklet that tells the complete story of the show's Broadway origins and rocky journey to Hollywood. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Buy it for the movie it could of been.......2005-03-13
Even though the movie version with Hutton isn't the greatest, it's still worthy of getting for your collection. Hutton's version adds a bit of zaniness to the character that neither Judy, or Ethel would want to attempt. With Garland the movie would have been entirely different, and knowing Judy's ability to rise to the occassion, it probably would have been better. After all, there is a reason why she has been known as the "world's greatest entertainer". Even in her outtakes that were supposed to be "so horrible", she seemed to have that performers ability to entertain. (I felt her outtakes were better than Hutton's finished performances.)
That being said, this soundtrack gives you an idea of what a Garland Annie could have been like. Its kind of fun to compare and contrast. Hutton did give her Annie a slapstick, comedic take that makes it fun to watch, and she did give it her all. Its amazing to hear the Garland naysayers, though. For one, Judy was always beautiful as an artist and as a person. Secondly, everyone has a favorite Judy Garland movie whether it be Oz, or Meet me in st louis, or Girl Crazy, or A Star is Born. Each of her characters were different and her co-stars and chemistry were different, yet each perfomance was done beautifully. I have to give the little lady the benefit of the doubt. I think Judy Garland would have been a terrific Annie Oakley.
I love this CD.......2004-04-05

The word delirious is perhaps tossed around too casually in '90s dance music, but Sacrebleu earns the description. Dimitri patches together everything from lounge sounds to techno, with plenty of ear-tickling verbal samples to keep things hopping. Too much of a good thing at 70-plus minutes, perhaps, but you'll even enjoy the hangover. --Rickey WrightAlbum Details

Dimitri has been an arhetype in flowing electronic funk for a while. And this being one of his later albums is no exception. He incorporates smooth funk with olde-time parisian groove into such magical coordination you'd think you were in the Bohemian city itself in 1966. Almost all tracks include "mixes" from either French or American cinema (Une Very Stylish Fille being a perfect example from Audrey Hepburn's 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'). But with that being said, there are some tracks that appear rather redundant in their mixing, and can get abrasive at times. But with the majority being a smooth Jet-Set I'm-Frank-Sinatra-and-I-can-do-what-I-want theme, this album will be an original addition to the mod electro-philes out there looking for something more bohemian and less blase (that's a french word right?).

A powerful memento of a stunning film.......2004-05-02
Giorgio Moroder's re-edit uses these songs, not because they're particularly amazing tunes, but because they're particularly amazing tunes for the film, perfectly working with the images and movements to create an amazingly emotional and exciting experience. I find myself constantly listening to this soundtrack, not because I adore the songs, but because I adore what they did for the film. I hear Cycle V's "Blood From a Stone" and immediately see the workers' elevator descending at a haunting pace to the underground city, or hear Pat Benetar's "Here is My Heart" and relive Freder and Maria's first kiss, as well as the awe-inspiring close of the film (no spoilers here).
I first discovered Moroder's Metropolis because I was a die-hard fan of Queen and Freddy Mercury, but quickly learned that Mercury's "Love Kills" is surprisingly one of the weakest tracks from the film. For better or worse, Moroder and his Metropolis demand a very different quality from each of the popular artists involved in the soundtrack than you'd normally expect from them. Morodor wrote many of these songs for the film himself, and produced all of them, so don't expect typical Freddy Mercury, or Pat Benetar, Bonnie Tyler, or Adam Ant (and who the heck is Cycle V, anyway?).
Buy this CD in order to relive one of the most stunning marriages of music and cinema you will ever see (which is what the music on this soundtrack was written for); not to enjoy the music on its own. You must see and love the film first.
Good soundtrack awash with Moroder synths.......2003-11-18
For some reason, the lyrics of "Love Kills" listed in the booklet do not match what Mercury sings. However, the industrialized sound is something akin to Queen's "Invisible Man." "Love kills/drills you through your hear/love kills/scars you from the start" and many such lyrics colour this song.
Pat Benatar's ballad "Here's My Heart" is my favourite song here, as it was the love theme in the movie. There is a more pop feel to it, and though it comes three years previously, I can imagine Tiffany doing a remake of this on her first album, minus the Moroder synths.
Yes-man Jon Anderson does "Cage Of Freedom," whose pulsing synths and rock guitars identify this as a classic Moroder-type song. The song depicts the claustrophobic and desperate condition of the workers and subjects of Metropolis: "Cage of freedom, growing smaller/till every wall now touches the skin/cage of freedom/filled with treason/changing sides as the losses begin."
Another song that deals with the enslaved humans is the haunting choral of Cycle V's "Blood From A Stone." There are only three verses here, each potent in its lyrical content, which given today's corporate mentality, is apropos: "Cold machines that never stop/even if a man should drop/mercy never lets her face be shown/they draw blood from a stone."
"The Legend Of Babel" is a keyboard instrumental by Giorgio Moroder, meant to conjure a fascinating mindscape or some blinding fantasy vision, sounding like a composition from one of the nineteenth century Romantics.
"Here She Comes", sings Bonnie Tyler, in a track meant to signify the hypnotic quality the main female lead Maria has. One verse is meant as an allusion to the robot that substitutes her: "If she's the same how come she's different now?" Her vocals have her usual power
Giorgio Moroder's sound somehow doesn't fit Loverboy, as "Destruction" sounds like a way-slowed down version of "Turn Me Loose" with the Moroder synths. That's only partially true with Billy Squier's "On Your Own." However, the guitar work, overlayed with synths in some parts, and catchy chorus work well to bring out a man for whom the time has come to free his soul from tyranny.
How well do we know people, or the expressions on their face? "Can a smile conceal a sneer?" "What makes the truth curl up and lie?" are two crucial question Adam Ant asks in "What's Going On," a pulsing rocker that depicts the collapse of the dictatorship in Metropolis.
"Machines" is the second Moroder instrumental, and is a quick-paced exercise in keyboards and pulsing synth beats.
The Metropolis soundtrack is a good compilation of songs, no mistake. Like all soundtrack songs, there are some that can only be understood within the context of the movie it was meant to enhance, such as Bonnie Tyler's song, and there are others that transcend that and can be applied universally. Within the soundtrack, the artists' songs are good; however, I wouldn't compare this to other works in their oeuvre-they've done better songs. That's due to Giorgio Moroder doing all the music and writing or co-writing and dolloping each artist with his brand of paint.

By the 50's, the lavish adaptation of Broadway musicals had already been a lucrative Hollywood staple for decades. But the times--and tastes--were changing; television and rock & roll would soon virtually spell the end of the traditional genre. Ostensibly, MGM's Hit the Deck hewed close to the studio's big-budget film musical formula: an all-star cast, eye-catching sets, and show-stopping production numbers. But No, No, Nanette composer Vincent Youmans's tale of three sailors on leave was already nearly 30 years old by the time Metro acquired the film rights (while the similarly themed, more musically contemporary Bernstein/Comden/Green show On the Town had already been a postwar hit), and their 1955 adaptation seemed somewhat quaint. Still, it's a solid musical show (highlighted by the rousing "Hallelujah"), full of strong performances by stars Vic Damone, Debbie Reynolds, Tony Martin, and Ann Miller. This release marks the film soundtrack's CD debut, restoring many previously abridged numbers and presenting all in stereo for the first time. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
welcome reissue.......2003-10-18
HIT THE DECK preceeded "On the Town" and "Anchors Aweigh", and is the grand-daddy of the 'sailors on shore-leave' musicals. The story is enlivened no end by the talented cast, who all get fabulous numbers to perform. Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell come off best with such delights as "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Lucky Bird", "Why Oh Why?", and "Loo-Loo". M-G-M Records artist Kay Armen (in a supporting role as Vic Damone's mother) sings "Ciribiribin", a wistful love song. Ann Miller's singing was dubbed here (and rather noticeably) by Kitty White.
The entire cast brings down the house with the rousing finale of "Hallelujah!", which involves Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell doing a harmony, Kay Armen with the lead vocal, and Ann Miller featured in a spectacular tap-solo.
For a studio concentrating on the cutting-edge trends of musicals, HIT THE DECK was something of a throwback. A lot of it comes down to the producer, Joe Pasternak, who was renowned for his sentimental streak in choosing musicals. This musical doesn't have the edge or wit of "On the Town", but can be heartily enjoyed on it's own terms.
Rhino/TCM have done their usual stellar job in restoring this soundtrack album, rescuing the cut sequences of "Dormi Dormi" (Kay Armen & Vic Damone), "Fun House", the reprise of "Sometimes I'm Happy" (Jane Powell & Vic Damone), and the "Theatre Chase Overture".

Album Description
Bureaucracy is one of Washington's greatest exports. Deep Dish is another, two young men who cut through the red tape and mediocrity of the underground with the sharpest of knives. Before Deep Dish became world-wide dance music sensations, before the main stream recognition that has garnered them a Grammy Award and more, and even before they gave birth to their world renowned record label Yoshitoshi, Deep Dish were working hard to stake their claim in the world of dance music.Penetrate Deeper represents the early days of Deep Dish and the then fledgling Deep Dish Records. The now classic compilation features the first four original Deep Dish Records releases ("A Feeling", "The Moment of Truth", "Relativity", and "Lonely Winter") along side the pivotal Quench and Special remix of Naomi Daniel's "Feel the Fire," produced for their long-time mate, Detroit's Carl Craig.
Two additional compositions complete the picture - the lush, orchestrated Elastic Reality, and "The Dream" by Prana - the apex of Deep Dish's career at that point.
After listening to these works, it becomes clear that, even at that early stage in their career, Dubfire and Sharam had tapped into a chemistry and bond that is greater than the sum of its parts.

I have to say that this CD changed how I felt about house music. I liked it before Penetrate Deeper but LOVED it after. I'd listen to this over and over, mesmerized by the slow building and hypnotic nature of the tracks. When TRIBAL went under, I was saddened to realize that this CD may not get the opportunity to touch others like it did me. It is a relief to see that it has been rereleased.
Tracks like "Cassa de X", "Lonely Winter, "Feel The Fire", and "The Dream" were my personal favorites. At the time, I never heard house music like this. I was used to the NYC/NJ garage influenced style. (MAW, Todd Terry,MK,JohNick, etc.)
Please listen to it with an open mind. It is only a single CD, and remember that this originally came out in 1995! Many of the tracks are 10 years old. I'd still listen to my old copy often and reflect with a smile on my face.
