Irving Berlin's Wild West Show-themed romp Annie Get Your Gun has long been a Broadway evergreen, including a wildly successful modern revival starring Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat. But its original 1950 MGM film translation was fraught with production problems and recasting; Judy Garland was initially signed to star and even recorded her vocal numbers before being dismissed (due largely to her notorious personal problems) and replaced by Betty Hutton. While several of Garland's performances as Annie Oakley have been released on other compilations, this generous, 31-cut release not only marks the CD debut of the film's original soundtrack (originally just eight tracks), it compiles all of the various Garland versions (including the first release of a spectacular stereo Garland version of "There's No Business Like Show Business") onto its second half, essentially re-creating the "Annie that never was," in addition to the first complete release of the Hutton score. Also included is a superbly illustrated and well-annotated booklet that tells the complete story of the show's Broadway origins and rocky journey to Hollywood. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A great buy!.......2006-07-08

This CD is well worth the money. If you loved the movie and want to relive the thrill and energy of the production while driving or around the house - get this CD you won't be sorry. I want to point out that some other reviews said Betty Hutton was not as good as Judy Garland. Not true. Betty's ability to sing in the accent she spoke in brought the character and performace to life. Judy's great but not great at everything.

5 out of 5 stars The two Annies.......2006-03-13

I was very pleased with this CD because it not only had the original movie musical soundtrack, but also included the versoin with Judy Garland that was scrapped when she was replaced by Betty Hutton.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it for the movie it could of been.......2005-03-13

I bought this especially for the "missing " Garland soundtracks. And yes , anything Hutton sang, Judy sang better. It goes to prove that as a singer, Betty was a struggling artisan, croaking out the words badly at times. Whereas, when Judy the artist sings, you can feel every emotion and nuance that you would expect from a great artist.

Even though the movie version with Hutton isn't the greatest, it's still worthy of getting for your collection. Hutton's version adds a bit of zaniness to the character that neither Judy, or Ethel would want to attempt. With Garland the movie would have been entirely different, and knowing Judy's ability to rise to the occassion, it probably would have been better. After all, there is a reason why she has been known as the "world's greatest entertainer". Even in her outtakes that were supposed to be "so horrible", she seemed to have that performers ability to entertain. (I felt her outtakes were better than Hutton's finished performances.)

That being said, this soundtrack gives you an idea of what a Garland Annie could have been like. Its kind of fun to compare and contrast. Hutton did give her Annie a slapstick, comedic take that makes it fun to watch, and she did give it her all. Its amazing to hear the Garland naysayers, though. For one, Judy was always beautiful as an artist and as a person. Secondly, everyone has a favorite Judy Garland movie whether it be Oz, or Meet me in st louis, or Girl Crazy, or A Star is Born. Each of her characters were different and her co-stars and chemistry were different, yet each perfomance was done beautifully. I have to give the little lady the benefit of the doubt. I think Judy Garland would have been a terrific Annie Oakley.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2004-04-05

I was a little nervous ordering this CD because I thought it would be poor quality based on the reviews. I was very pleasantly surprised and enjoy the music. The CD includes Both Betty Hutton and Judy Garland. ( I prefer Betty Hutton) and 2x Howard Keel. If you like the music from Annie get your gun, you will enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Betty Get Your Gun.......2003-11-23

The only reason I'm giving this CD 5 stars is because of Betty Hutton....Judy Garland can sing and is an amazing actress, lets not overlook that, but she brought nothing to Annie Oakley. She didn't have an accent in any of the few outtakes they have of her, she shows no enthusiasum, and Betty Hutton just outmatches her beyond imagination. If you like the Judy Garland outtakes I'm holding nothing against you, I just don't think she did anything good for the role.

The word delirious is perhaps tossed around too casually in '90s dance music, but Sacrebleu earns the description. Dimitri patches together everything from lounge sounds to techno, with plenty of ear-tickling verbal samples to keep things hopping. Too much of a good thing at 70-plus minutes, perhaps, but you'll even enjoy the hangover. --Rickey Wright

Ce matin La....oh, sorry.
Dimitri has been an arhetype in flowing electronic funk for a while. And this being one of his later albums is no exception. He incorporates smooth funk with olde-time parisian groove into such magical coordination you'd think you were in the Bohemian city itself in 1966. Almost all tracks include "mixes" from either French or American cinema (Une Very Stylish Fille being a perfect example from Audrey Hepburn's 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'). But with that being said, there are some tracks that appear rather redundant in their mixing, and can get abrasive at times. But with the majority being a smooth Jet-Set I'm-Frank-Sinatra-and-I-can-do-what-I-want theme, this album will be an original addition to the mod electro-philes out there looking for something more bohemian and less blase (that's a french word right?).

5 out of 5 stars Hold Out For The Moroder Version!.......2006-12-10

OK, I have the CD, and it's all been written about here; And I could easily do without the "existential bu!!$h!+" that permeates the movie itself - but Giorgio Moroder's soundtrack makes it all worthwhile - and this, from someone who hated disco! Jon Anderson's "Cage Of Freedom" is easily the best track here, but what really, REALLY makes it special is Leland Sklar's Fretless Precision bass solo at the end of the song. I'm a fairly good bassist myself, and I still can't...quite...play the thing. So, C'Mon! Make this available on DVD so we won't have to go running to EBay, PLEASE? OK, later, MUCH later.....(blushing) "I DID get it on the bay!" No question that one has to drop digits from his IQ to "shop" at EBay,but when they can offer something...as I said, when I received my copy, I sought the advice/company of one of my most liberal professor/friends, and he and I laughed all the way through. Dig: the upside down pentacle above "Hel," the robot; the messianic woman who sits, ensconced within a plethora of Crosses; and, OF course, the "stairway to heaven/tower of Bable" reference. Just try to do the impossible and ignore the Bolshevickism overtones, and dig the music.

5 out of 5 stars This is great entertainment !.......2005-05-20

I first saw this film when it was re-release in the 80's with its enhancements and music sound track. I loved it! I wish I could find it on DVD. I purchased the new "authorized version" that has restored footage. It's good but to the average movie go'er a bit long and boring. I like the Giorgio Moroder version much better. The over all story is better and makes more sense to me. Also the music keeps it interesting & entertaining. It also helps in the telling of the story in a way the original never will. I think the best senario would be to use the newly restored footage and the effects and soundtrack from Giorgio Moroders version and put it out on DVD. I would buy it in a hart beat!

1 out of 5 stars A classic has been defaced.......2005-02-06

Metropolis is a great film of American history. It is a beautiful classic that should be appreciated for the stunning things Fritz Lang did with it in the 1920's. Instead a few washed-out 80's bands make a mockery of it. Metropolis or anything of it's kind can not be parelled by loverboy or billy squier. This has only made a ridiculed the genius of Fritz Lang by tampering with something to please fans of 80's electronica.

3 out of 5 stars A powerful memento of a stunning film.......2004-05-02

It's impossible to discuss this soundtrack without discussing the 1984 re-edit of Metropolis from which it came. Unless you're a die-hard fan of industrial 80s pop (I don't know many of us who are), this CD is not worth your time unless you've seen the film.

Giorgio Moroder's re-edit uses these songs, not because they're particularly amazing tunes, but because they're particularly amazing tunes for the film, perfectly working with the images and movements to create an amazingly emotional and exciting experience. I find myself constantly listening to this soundtrack, not because I adore the songs, but because I adore what they did for the film. I hear Cycle V's "Blood From a Stone" and immediately see the workers' elevator descending at a haunting pace to the underground city, or hear Pat Benetar's "Here is My Heart" and relive Freder and Maria's first kiss, as well as the awe-inspiring close of the film (no spoilers here).

I first discovered Moroder's Metropolis because I was a die-hard fan of Queen and Freddy Mercury, but quickly learned that Mercury's "Love Kills" is surprisingly one of the weakest tracks from the film. For better or worse, Moroder and his Metropolis demand a very different quality from each of the popular artists involved in the soundtrack than you'd normally expect from them. Morodor wrote many of these songs for the film himself, and produced all of them, so don't expect typical Freddy Mercury, or Pat Benetar, Bonnie Tyler, or Adam Ant (and who the heck is Cycle V, anyway?).

Buy this CD in order to relive one of the most stunning marriages of music and cinema you will ever see (which is what the music on this soundtrack was written for); not to enjoy the music on its own. You must see and love the film first.

4 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack awash with Moroder synths.......2003-11-18

In 1984, Fritz Lang's classic silent sci-fi hit Metropolis was reissued in tinted colour and sporting a rock and pop soundtrack. While many serious silent films may consider this a blasphemous take on Lang's film, I'll have to say that was the first time I saw it, with the blue, green, violet, and red tints, along with a host of songs written by Giorgio Moroder of Donna Summer fame, and the one who gave Berlin their only #1 hit. Most of the songs have an industrial type sound blare with synths that either pulse or are awash like the red of a glaring sunset.

For some reason, the lyrics of "Love Kills" listed in the booklet do not match what Mercury sings. However, the industrialized sound is something akin to Queen's "Invisible Man." "Love kills/drills you through your hear/love kills/scars you from the start" and many such lyrics colour this song.

Pat Benatar's ballad "Here's My Heart" is my favourite song here, as it was the love theme in the movie. There is a more pop feel to it, and though it comes three years previously, I can imagine Tiffany doing a remake of this on her first album, minus the Moroder synths.

Yes-man Jon Anderson does "Cage Of Freedom," whose pulsing synths and rock guitars identify this as a classic Moroder-type song. The song depicts the claustrophobic and desperate condition of the workers and subjects of Metropolis: "Cage of freedom, growing smaller/till every wall now touches the skin/cage of freedom/filled with treason/changing sides as the losses begin."

Another song that deals with the enslaved humans is the haunting choral of Cycle V's "Blood From A Stone." There are only three verses here, each potent in its lyrical content, which given today's corporate mentality, is apropos: "Cold machines that never stop/even if a man should drop/mercy never lets her face be shown/they draw blood from a stone."

"The Legend Of Babel" is a keyboard instrumental by Giorgio Moroder, meant to conjure a fascinating mindscape or some blinding fantasy vision, sounding like a composition from one of the nineteenth century Romantics.

"Here She Comes", sings Bonnie Tyler, in a track meant to signify the hypnotic quality the main female lead Maria has. One verse is meant as an allusion to the robot that substitutes her: "If she's the same how come she's different now?" Her vocals have her usual power

Giorgio Moroder's sound somehow doesn't fit Loverboy, as "Destruction" sounds like a way-slowed down version of "Turn Me Loose" with the Moroder synths. That's only partially true with Billy Squier's "On Your Own." However, the guitar work, overlayed with synths in some parts, and catchy chorus work well to bring out a man for whom the time has come to free his soul from tyranny.

How well do we know people, or the expressions on their face? "Can a smile conceal a sneer?" "What makes the truth curl up and lie?" are two crucial question Adam Ant asks in "What's Going On," a pulsing rocker that depicts the collapse of the dictatorship in Metropolis.

"Machines" is the second Moroder instrumental, and is a quick-paced exercise in keyboards and pulsing synth beats.

The Metropolis soundtrack is a good compilation of songs, no mistake. Like all soundtrack songs, there are some that can only be understood within the context of the movie it was meant to enhance, such as Bonnie Tyler's song, and there are others that transcend that and can be applied universally. Within the soundtrack, the artists' songs are good; however, I wouldn't compare this to other works in their oeuvre-they've done better songs. That's due to Giorgio Moroder doing all the music and writing or co-writing and dolloping each artist with his brand of paint.

By the 50's, the lavish adaptation of Broadway musicals had already been a lucrative Hollywood staple for decades. But the times--and tastes--were changing; television and rock & roll would soon virtually spell the end of the traditional genre. Ostensibly, MGM's Hit the Deck hewed close to the studio's big-budget film musical formula: an all-star cast, eye-catching sets, and show-stopping production numbers. But No, No, Nanette composer Vincent Youmans's tale of three sailors on leave was already nearly 30 years old by the time Metro acquired the film rights (while the similarly themed, more musically contemporary Bernstein/Comden/Green show On the Town had already been a postwar hit), and their 1955 adaptation seemed somewhat quaint. Still, it's a solid musical show (highlighted by the rousing "Hallelujah"), full of strong performances by stars Vic Damone, Debbie Reynolds, Tony Martin, and Ann Miller. This release marks the film soundtrack's CD debut, restoring many previously abridged numbers and presenting all in stereo for the first time. --Jerry McCulley

    4 out of 5 stars welcome reissue.......2003-10-18

HIT THE DECK was originally staged on Broadway in 1927, featuring a score by Vincent Youmans ("No No Nanette"). It took nearly 30 years for M-G-M to bring the property to the screen. It was well worth the wait. The studio cast several of their top musical stars, including resident soprano Jane Powell, tap-dancer extraordinaire Ann Miller, matinee idol crooner Vic Damone, and romantic comedy lead Debbie Reynolds.

HIT THE DECK preceeded "On the Town" and "Anchors Aweigh", and is the grand-daddy of the 'sailors on shore-leave' musicals. The story is enlivened no end by the talented cast, who all get fabulous numbers to perform. Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell come off best with such delights as "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Lucky Bird", "Why Oh Why?", and "Loo-Loo". M-G-M Records artist Kay Armen (in a supporting role as Vic Damone's mother) sings "Ciribiribin", a wistful love song. Ann Miller's singing was dubbed here (and rather noticeably) by Kitty White.

The entire cast brings down the house with the rousing finale of "Hallelujah!", which involves Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell doing a harmony, Kay Armen with the lead vocal, and Ann Miller featured in a spectacular tap-solo.

For a studio concentrating on the cutting-edge trends of musicals, HIT THE DECK was something of a throwback. A lot of it comes down to the producer, Joe Pasternak, who was renowned for his sentimental streak in choosing musicals. This musical doesn't have the edge or wit of "On the Town", but can be heartily enjoyed on it's own terms.

Rhino/TCM have done their usual stellar job in restoring this soundtrack album, rescuing the cut sequences of "Dormi Dormi" (Kay Armen & Vic Damone), "Fun House", the reprise of "Sometimes I'm Happy" (Jane Powell & Vic Damone), and the "Theatre Chase Overture".

5 out of 5 stars Thought I'd never find it!!.......2003-04-10

This is a soundtrack I didn't think I would ever find. I love this movie and the music in it is so uplifting. My husband actually bought it for me before we were married and I will always love and listen to it, I never get tired of those songs. sometimes I find myself wishing real life could be like a musical, but I think having the soundtrack is the next best thing!!! Having music like this really beats the alternative of some of the bad music people are coming out with nowadays. Gotta love the classics!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets.......2001-10-23

This is one of the most exhilarating of all the MGM soundtrack albums that have come from the Turner vaults so far. The recording quality is as good as it gets, with wonderful stereo and what can one say about the orchestrations, the MGM orchestra and the vocals? Not to mention the splendid old musical comedy score revitalised in a most exciting way. If you are a fan of musical soundtracks, you'll love this one because it's truly a classic. It's a shame the MGM video of the film is such poor quality that it doesn't do it justice. There's no comparison with this CD, which certainly does. Great performers like Tony Martin, Ann Miller, Vic Damone, Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell give of their best and that really is tops in listening pleasure. I'm still hoping they'll bring out more titles like "Words and Music", "Thousands Cheer", "Good News" etc. Meantime I'm delighted to get "Hit the Deck", which I highly recommend!

    5 out of 5 stars MGM at it's best........2001-03-24

I saw this film when I was an impressionable kid of 15 and quite taken with the songs, dances, the Navy and Ann Miller's legs. I must have seen the film over ten times in the movies. I bought the album on 45 EPs and later on LP. But after hearing the CD I just couldn't believe anything could sound that good me. Who ever was responsible, thanks and do it some more. There are so many productions released on CD that just do not measure up but this one exceeded all my expectations. The extra music was a real surprise and quality is just unbelievable. What memories!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Stereo At It's Best.......2001-02-05

I must start by saying briefly - the music on this recording includes finely orchestrated, beautifully sung songs and energetic dance numbers. But what really added to my listening pleasure was the superlative remastering of the original recordings for this CD. The CD has wide open stereo sound that sounds so good, it could have been originally recorded today. The music and the voices open your home listening space as no other historical film soundtrack recording has done in the recent past. Magnificent.

      Album Description

Bureaucracy is one of Washington's greatest exports. Deep Dish is another, two young men who cut through the red tape and mediocrity of the underground with the sharpest of knives. Before Deep Dish became world-wide dance music sensations, before the main stream recognition that has garnered them a Grammy Award and more, and even before they gave birth to their world renowned record label Yoshitoshi, Deep Dish were working hard to stake their claim in the world of dance music.

Penetrate Deeper represents the early days of Deep Dish and the then fledgling Deep Dish Records. The now classic compilation features the first four original Deep Dish Records releases ("A Feeling", "The Moment of Truth", "Relativity", and "Lonely Winter") along side the pivotal Quench and Special remix of Naomi Daniel's "Feel the Fire," produced for their long-time mate, Detroit's Carl Craig.

Two additional compositions complete the picture - the lush, orchestrated Elastic Reality, and "The Dream" by Prana - the apex of Deep Dish's career at that point.

After listening to these works, it becomes clear that, even at that early stage in their career, Dubfire and Sharam had tapped into a chemistry and bond that is greater than the sum of its parts.

      4 out of 5 stars Old school.......2004-02-27

Note--this is a re-release of an OLD Deep Dish cd, but it is excellent! Definitely lets you see the beginnings of what they sounded like when they started. Quite different than now, IMHO. But, some great house tracks, and BT is on here also. I picked up the first issue in 1995 when I kept hearing 'Lonely Winter' at the club and was loving it. Also, desperately wanted to find Chocolate City but had to wait all the way until the "Junk Science" album to get it on cd. Sigh-brings me back to the good old days.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2003-11-11

I normally buy any Deep Dish release without reading the reveiws or listening to it first. This definitley sounds older and I was expecting a little more. Maybe a good one for serious DD fans but I prefer their newer stuff (Global Underground).

      4 out of 5 stars PURE BLISS.......2003-11-07

LOVE IT SHOWS THEY WERE MILES AHEAD !

5 out of 5 stars Glad this is available again!!.......2003-09-11

I remember buying this CD in 1995 solely because it was on the old TRIBAL AMERICA label (Remember them?). I had never heard of Deep Dish and I just started to learn how to DJ. I was into house music for a few years and decided to give it a shot because I recognized Carl Craig and I heard the "Cassa de X" track when I used to go clubbing.
I have to say that this CD changed how I felt about house music. I liked it before Penetrate Deeper but LOVED it after. I'd listen to this over and over, mesmerized by the slow building and hypnotic nature of the tracks. When TRIBAL went under, I was saddened to realize that this CD may not get the opportunity to touch others like it did me. It is a relief to see that it has been rereleased.
Tracks like "Cassa de X", "Lonely Winter, "Feel The Fire", and "The Dream" were my personal favorites. At the time, I never heard house music like this. I was used to the NYC/NJ garage influenced style. (MAW, Todd Terry,MK,JohNick, etc.)
Please listen to it with an open mind. It is only a single CD, and remember that this originally came out in 1995! Many of the tracks are 10 years old. I'd still listen to my old copy often and reflect with a smile on my face.

sure this cd isnt out yet... but deep dish never fails to amaze. little thing to note is that brian transeau is BT.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live NY HC bands.......2007-01-19

I got to see Dave's band twice. Once in '83 at a Hare Krisna benefit in Tompkin's Square Park (with early Beasty Boys), then again at "The World" off of Houston in '84(?) with DOA/AOD/Dead Kennedys. Reagan Youth blew everyone else away. The live stuff is so much better than the studio. There was so much power and humor and rage in those live performances. I had seen a few local HC shows and liked the music and the scene, but these guys were on a completely different level. The only other band that completely floored me like that was Bad Brains.

3 out of 5 stars great band, decent re-release..dont throw out collection of pop classics just yet.......2006-10-23

one question? where is Degenerated?!? that is one of the best Reagan youth songs and it is, for some unknown reason, left out of this release. im usually a sucker for this re-mastered/re-released stuff, but this one regresses by leaving off one of the best songs by them...and JUST that song!...and it's a shame because the sound is nice and remastered and this would have been a superb upgrade to the low sound level "collection of pop classics", but the exclusion of that single song makes the compilation an "ill pass" type of release

great otherwise, just dont believe the track listing, degenerated isnt there.

        5 out of 5 stars Classic Punk.......2005-03-31

THis is such a good album. The first songs rock and rest is annoying, but it grows in appreciaition. Buy it. its good
