Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Those who have followed Moby's career are familiar by now with his deep convictions and spiritual connection. On his 1999 release, Play, he celebrates his faith in a masterful, unobtrusive way, channeling gospel and other inspirational samples through beats so earthy they could grow grass on a cement dance floor. It's impossible to separate the joy of the message from the joy of the grooves. --Beth Massa

4 out of 5 stars Moby-Unplugged.......2006-08-09

While this is not an acoustic album, most "Unplugged" albums are the artists' at their most basic, Play:The B Sides is Moby stripped-down to mostly instrumental music, basic, simple, pure and beautiful. A rare collection that is great to listen to in the car, at home, or on head phones.

5 out of 5 stars Moby had too much good material to put out.......2006-01-26

"Play" has got to constitute Moby's greatest contribution to the world. When I say "Play", I mean both the original album and this "B Sides" album he released over a year later. Both albums are solid and show without a doubt that he had just too much good material to release and refused to let it sit on the shelf.

The "B Sides" album actually is just as good as the original, so if you liked "Play" you will definitely love this one. There are no weak tracks, so you can be safe with this one.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Play, but still a good album.......2005-08-22

Play is a 5 star album. This one has some really good tracks and goes well with Play. "Memory Gospel" is one of the best songs on there.

3 out of 5 stars Good background music, but kinda bland.......2005-06-07

While I can't say this is awful, its just not engaging enough to engender a reaction that powerful, I can't recommend this either. It's good background music but there really isn't enough going on to make Play: The B Sides an album I can sit down and listen to. Its not boring, nor is it that interesting, rather it pleasantly burbles along like your dotty aunt Marge who doesn't care if you're listening to her or not. Mild and disengaged.

5 out of 5 stars B-Sides Better Than Many Albums' A Material.......2005-03-20

I listen to Moby often while I work, and this album is fantastic. Memory Gospel is a beautiful piece of music and it's consistent with the tone and idea of "Play". Moby fans who don't have this yet should seriously look into it.

Amazon.com Artist Essentials

The great iconoclast of techno returns with a smooth, sacred, and exhilarating record. Play's concoction of breakbeat rhythms, ambient mixology, and inspired blues and gospel samples cry out across musical genres and histories, imparting a time-tested wisdom to beat-driven ears. Moby's devout faith--in both God and his own musical whims--give this approach a sort of legitimacy that another, less sincere artist would never have. That sincerity reverberates through the beats and instrumental eclecticism like a pulse. The soulful refrains and proclamations in "Find My Baby" and "Natural Blues" somehow nestle between straight-up dance-floor rave-ups ("Bodyrock") and melt-in-your-mouth ambience ("Inside") with an effortless grace. Moby reaches across his turntables and finds something pure--almost organic. In fact, the album feels more natural than techno is ever supposed to feel, more spiritual than what DJs are supposed to be able to muster, and more alive than it has any right to be. --Matthew Cooke

3 out of 5 stars There's a reason why they're called B-sides, people..........2004-01-12

I picked up this album about a year ago. That it took me this long to write a review is about how memorable the album actually is, but it necessitates a mention at least.

"Memory Gospel" figures prominently in Oliver Stone's "Any Given Sunday" (albeit remixed), and "Flying Foxes" probably should have been left on "Play". The rest is strictly fair-to-middling pap that you'll probably find as uninspiring as I did.

In short, if you were a fan of the low-tempo stuff on "Play", you'll probably find this worth owning. But for pure ambient soundscape brilliance, check out KLF's "Chill Out" or The Orb's "Live'93".

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes we want more (and get it!).......2002-10-29

You know how you hate to see a book end after having thoroughly enjoyed the content? Well, Moby's Play: The B-Sides fulfills that wish in giving the listener even more of the wonderful music which Play provided. It's almost as if the original CD never ended in the first place.

I discovered the B-Sides when searching for the mesmerizing Whispering Wind. Like other reviewers, I find myself baffled as to why the B-Sides didn't sell like Play itself. If you like Moby, you're sure to find several of the cuts just as enjoyable. Subjectively, after Whispering Wind, I found the followup cut Summer to be fascinating.

Bottom line, it's just plain good listenin'!

4 out of 5 stars Moby Scores Again..........2001-02-25

As a devout Play fan, I was excited to hear the B-Sides album. To my delight, I was not disappointed. Moby has taken some of the best sounds and worked them into this more-mellow but equally amazing album. Although some tracks are reminiscent of those on Play, the disc has a distinct sound of its own. As in Play, Moby uses his vocal blues loops, simple piano melodies, and euphoric guitar licks to draw in the listener. If you liked Play, and particularly the more mellow tracks, check out the B-Sides.

5 out of 5 stars We all love Moby.......2000-12-02

Wonderful CD. Flower and Whispering Wind are the only vocals, and they're great. The rest is music. It's by Moby. It's great. Buy. Buy. Buy.

4 out of 5 stars The B-sides make it worth it.......2000-11-20

If you're a fan of Moby's non-mainstream, synth-based work, pick this up. The B-sides disc has the feel of "Ambient" and the later half of the US version of "Animal Rights." I'm giving it 4 stars because I think that it's a little silly to include it with the original disc of "Play" seeing as most people who would buy it probably are fans and already have "Play." Also, I'm a little bummed that Moby did not include four other B-sides: Princess (from the "Why Does My Heart..." single), Micronesia (from "Honey" single), Sick in the System (from "Natural Blues" single), and Arp (from "Bodyrock" single). But, on the whole, the B-sides disc is phenomenal and worth any Moby fan's money.

Hey there Moby fans. This is one essential set.The Play cd is no different. The reason to buy this is that it includes a second disc of b-sides.It starts out beautifully with Flower. It fuses hip hop sounds with gospel and ambient tones.Wonderful.The next track,Sunday is a techno kicker! What I really like about the disc that is has variety.Fast to mid-tempo beatsthroughout.Out of the 11 tracks, only one is weak. The track,Flying over the dateline sounds like Aphex Twin stuff.Otherwise it is great so don't pass this up.
