Editorial Reviews
The two producers pulling the strings behind the Mettle Music crew are Nic Conef and Mark Wadsworth. The duo is based within the fertile deep house breeding ground of Manchester where its evocative sound has evolved consistently and confidently into maturity since the first release as part of the Mettle Music Collective back in June 1999. Moving significantly forward from their acclaimed singles on several well known US labels including Transport (Miguel Migss label) and Afterhours and their solid debut Honeycomb Lounge on the renowned deep house label Toko - the new album Moodswings demonstrates the duos increased level of depth and musical sophistication.
The album is in a word stunning. It combines both funk-fuelled, jazzy, percussive grooves with more sublime laid back productions integrating the duos varied musical interests into a delicious whole. You can unwind to the sweet Latin vocals of "El Mar" (featuring Malena's Susana Montero) or hit the floor as the full live band takes to the stage with the irresistible grooves of the samba inspired "Latin Horns." The first single to be taken from the album is the impeccably sublime "Capture" which features the chilling vocals of Virginia Barret; it appears on the album in two parts making the journey from mellow acoustics to skanking dubby house seem like the most natural progression in the world simply genius.
Every track on the album could similarly be written about in equally glowing terms. Arguably a landmark in chilled out British Soul Music this brilliant Mancunian duo have once again proven their mettle!

The brilliant Brodsky Quartet is at it again, offering entertaining, virtuosic collaborations with stars of the pop music world with which both classical and popular music lovers will be equally entranced. Whether it's lolling strings underpinning Meredith Monk's enchanting, wordless syllables or assisting Jacqui Dankworth in a torch-like ballad (The Abyss) or nervous pizzicati to go along with a song by Sting, the ear is constantly being treated to a new surprise: if a quartet of strings and a voice can do it, they do it here. Errolyn Wallen and the Brodskys offer a languid ballad called "Daedalus," while Bjork puts her usual, original (if vaguely tiresome) stamp on "I've Seen It All." The CD opens and closes with songs sung by Elvis Costello whose unique, vibrato-filled voice remains remarkably expressive; the last number, "Real Emotional Girl," is a Randy Newman song in which the strings of the Brodskys feel and put across the singer's anguish in equal partnership. A one-of-a-kind CD. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

Appropriate Title for Sharp Performances on a Bumpy Road.......2005-06-06
Sting's performance of his gypsy ballad, "Until...", sounds especially influenced by Kurt Weill, as does Björk's familiar dirge, "I've Seen It All", from her 2000 cinematic foray with Lars von Trier, "Dancer in the Dark". Jacqui Dankworth lends a languorous vocal to Kate Curtis' and Will South's "The Abyss" and the more funereal "Song" by Daniel Monk. And a nice surprise is the Gershwin-inspired "I Never Went Away" by Richard Rodney Bennett, though it does feel a bit out of place among the more experimental music. Truth be told, some tracks are plain odd, such as Meredith Monk's "Gotham Lullaby" with its random yelps and minor-chord la-la's and Errollyn Wallen's meandering, overlong "Daedalus", a rather pretentious art song. The schools provide two of the highlights here: "Swearing at the Moon" by Arieh Miller of JFS in London, and Venus Flytrap by students from Blatchingham Mill School in Hove. Both songs are performed by Ian Shaw, whose biting vocal mixes well with the discordant string arrangements. Elvis Costello frames the recording with the jaunty opener, "My Mood Swings" and his closing cover of Randy Newman's "Real Emotional Girl", a slow, heartbreaking ballad with Newman's trademark observations. The quartet itself performs with their brio intact, applying a lot of color and texture to the songs.

Billy Bragg producer Grant Showbiz bids, on this second Moodswings disc, to become the '90s answer to Mike Batt--the Brit impresario (remember the Wombles?) who produced kitchen-sink instrumental exotica for the lumpen proletariat in the late '70s. That's Tanita Tikaram (we think) in "Together as One (Luminous)," but she brings little to an album that is essentially faux electronica/world beat for boutique browsers. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:

Perfect for ANY Mood!!.......2001-09-19
I thought Moodfood was wonderful - and was blown away when I first heard Psychedelicatessen. I've listened to it at least a hundred times and have never grown bored of it!! It's a beautiful musical journey - from the beat-driven to the ethereal. It's been a soundtrack to a large portion of my life; it fits in about EVERY situation. It's inspired me in my Architecture studio, motivated and relaxed me at home; it's warmed me up to go out on party weekends and brought me back to earth afterwards. I have yet to find anyone who hasn't enjoyed it; friends who know request it often.
Do me a favor - once you've listened to it, write to Arista and ask them to bring Showbiz & Hood back together for another!!

ABSOLUTE, UTTER, SHEER PERFECTION!.......1999-11-01
Memorable melodies delivered from steel drums to solo piano.......1999-02-11
The music is mainly instrumental ranging from driving rhythms (such as 'Dancing is Important) to ethereal musings (such as 'Together As One'). The opening symphonic overture is still my most favorite music (there is a tempo shift that defies explanation but I can listen to it all day)...

Live sounds good.......2006-01-17
1. Tabla Motown (4.57): Starts off slow. This one has some really nice drums, it makes you want to dance. 4/5
2. Crunch (4.00): Up-tempo, with parts of "State of Indepence". 3/5
3. Back to Basics (3.11): Up-tempo as well. Nothing in particular. 3/5
4. Hozanna (6.09): Starts off slow with a man speaking, then the music picks up. Quite a pretty song. Nice touch with the choir. 4/5
5. Live Longer! (Spiritual High) (9.31): My favourite. It has that great theme we all know, really moody! Also contains "I have dream" by Luther King 5/5
6. Brutal (8.37): Another favourite of mine. Sounds like a soccer anthem. Has a great beat. 5/5
It's a shame this doesn't have "State of Independence", because that's the song which got me into learning more about Moodswings. This CD also has only 6 track, so I wish it were longer. I normally hate Live CDs, because of all the cheering and clapping in the back ground, however this CD has very little of the audience present. Highly recommended!

The title probably refers to the most efficacious position for listening to this drifting, shimmering expanse of ambient music from James Hood, a one-time drummer with the Pretenders. This is ambient music that draws on the timeless mix of resignation and awe you find in Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, Brian Eno's "An Ending (Ascent)," and Johann Pachelbel's "Canon," the last of which Hood freely adapts on "Interior Design." Comprising two CDs, Horizontal presents a floating ambient dreamscape in the first disc, with minimalist sequences that surge in and out, pulling sweeping synth chords along with them. Disc two remixes the first, adding in some deeply chilled rhythms and, on a couple of tracks, the celestially seductive voice of Julee Cruise. On "Opium," a pedal steel guitar calls out across a southwestern desert plain in space before evolving into a symphonic, albeit low-key crescendo. Hood is an artist who has one foot melting, Dali-esque, in 1970s German space music, while the other taps its toes in more contemporary chill-out designs. He brings it all together on a CD that should become an ambient signpost, pointing the way to destinations out. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

Departure.......2005-04-06
With that bias, this effort is better than most, thanks to Debussy. Several tracks have exquisite passages but I actually thought Disk 2 was damaged because of a horrible flutter effect at the 7:44 mark of the first track. My rating of 4 means I like the album, still listen to it and recommend a purchase.

And we waited 5 years for this?.......2003-02-19
Where as the first two CD's had a mix of dreamy upbeat music on some tracks along side of slower pieces, this CD was entirely trance. The sound that originally set Moodswings apart during the 1990's is now gone and they sound like any other trance band that is out there. Stick with the first two releases.
The songs are beautiful........2003-02-04
Some of the songs sound like they have Irish Folk song influences, while others have Classical piano melodies. The entire package just eases itself along. If you're looking for something that'll take the edge off of you, faster than a joint of Marijuana, this is it.

set your stereo for selective shuffle.......2003-11-14
heads grooving to this perfectly balanced tune. "Pacific Motion" nods again at the West Coast, replacing the sultry female vocals of "Better Days" with soulful Spanish guitar. The album is tracked with no audible gaps between songs, and from track 2 on the CD does flow like a well planed out mix. "Sleepy Head" takes it down a few notches, but before you nod off, skip to the sublime Spanish singing, lush guitar and horns of "El Mar." an instant chilllout classic. Unfortunately, the albums lows are as intense as its highs, but if you don't mind settting your stereo to do a selective shuffle, you can close your eyes and pretend that you're watching a sunrise over the ocean, no matter where you are.
