Hiatus on the Horizon [Import]

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Now operating with a similar palate and outlook to Tosca, New Zealand's Recloose produces electro-pepped soul covered in a warm Myelin sheath which, although undoubtedly engaging, doesn't tackle the mind as much as it does the feet. Opening with a glitter-fuelled re-reading of Tejada's Plug Research excursions, 'Landed' combines its superficial shine with two fantastic vocal performances from Justin Chapman and Genevieve Marenette which will be welcome balm to anyone fond of Rosin Murphy, Dani Siciliano or Galia Durant. Whilst at times coming across a little too airbrushed (see 'Still Beyond Me' and 'Dust'), Recloose includes enough pep to keep you interested, with the ratchet-beat House makeover of 'Turkish Delight' and 'Makutu Man's appropriation of a Jimi Tenor/Talking Heads collaboration, worthy of a special mention. Peacefrog. 2005.

      Album Description

With the underground funk of latest masterpiece single `Dust' causing a commotion amongst those that know upon its release, Matthew Chicoine aka Recloose is now ready to unleash his first album for Peacefrog, Hiatus On The Horizon. As uncategorizable and genre-bending as one might expect from a man who had his first break with techno pioneer Carl Craig and now resides in New Zealand working with some of the country's finest musicians (see Joe Dukie's gorgeous vocals on the aforementioned `Dust'), this album represents a more coherent, focused and musical side of the `til now cult musician.

Previous releases on Craig's respected Planet E label marked Recloose out as a leading light of the Detroit scene, and since then trading remixes with the likes of Matthew Herbert and Jazzanova has enhanced his reputation for pushing the techno template to the full. The album is peppered with the live instruments that proved vital in his musical make up having studied them, performed them in some esoteric ensembles, and latterly played a key part in the Innerzone Orchestra.

Already imbued with a certain sonic liberalism, Recloose's trip to Wellington, New Zealand in 2000 proved a key moment - falling in love with the people and the country and leading to his permanent relocation there. This liberation from the insular Detroit scene brought about collaborations that would have previously not seemed possible, artistically as well as literally, the fruits of which are most immediately obvious on the magic-coated "Dust", but also the loping beauty of opener "Landed" featuring vocalists Justin Chapman and Genevieve Marentette.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Great..........2006-08-11

This album seems a little more played down than it's predecessor. 'Cardiology' was an album that stretched songs out and played with build ups significantly more. So my only gripe would be there isn't enough of that this go round. That, however, is a minor complaint. The downtempo tracks really shine on this. He definitely makes use of the space available to work with...stretching samples and bass lines that really shine on these numbers, especially with headphones. Bringing a bit of electro, funk and jazz. "Still Beyond Me" is a great example and one for the repeat button. Aside from Hollie Smith's great vocal the beats, keys, guitar licks and horns are a real treat. The house tracks that are good are A+. The album opener "Landed" is such a slice of funk that you can't help but wanna crank it up. It ranks up there with his "Soul Clap 2000" track from the Spelunking ep. Joe Dukie does a great job on the first single "Dust". Chicoine's love for jazz really shines through on his take of 'Makutu Man'. 'Mana's Bounce' even flaunts a little Ska. The album closer 'Why I Otta' is great track and return to the stretched out production of the past. It's a substantial trek through latin percussion, bass line, horns and a tweaked vocal that shows deft skills at gradually building a track. The album definitely grows on you the more you listen. While I don't think its superb it's still pretty damn refreshing!! Makes me look forward to his next release. You know he's got a lot more to offer.
