3 out of 5 stars Less is more.......2007-05-19

Disc#1 is ok if you in to relaxing, very down tempo music. Disc#2 had some promising artists and contains some good tracks. Both 2 stars.

Disc#3 is in my opinion a compilation that truly belongs in the Balance Series. It reminded me somewhat of Balance 5 (in my opinion the best progressive album ever). Very smoothly mixed and great tracks! 5 stars.

So less is more, I think 3 CD's is just to much. And after listening the #3 I do not think I will soon be listening to the other two again.

But for Disc#3 this is definitely worthwhile buying.

1 out of 5 stars Hippie Lullabies .......2007-01-27

My DJ side:
I actually had to stop the music, open the tray on the CD player then check whether I had the right CD1 down-tempo in, or some other CD that my wife played before as the music was so not what I was expecting, sounding more like Deep Forest than JVM. To my surprise, it was Jimmy's Balance 10. I decided to Keep an open mind and listen to it anyway. I went to sleep after the 4th track. The next day I decided to listen to the second CD (mid tempo). Again I stopped the music, opened the tray on the CD player then checked whether I had the (mid tempo CD) in instead of the down-tempo I was playing the night before. Sure enough, the (mid tempo) was what I had in the player, but did not sound much different than the lullabies I was listening to on CD1. When the mid-tempo was over, I thought to myself "well, this would be very nice for an upcoming relaxing dinner with friends". The next day I had high hopes for the up tempo CD, cause well, as the name implies, it should be where the beats and treats are. But No. Not really.

The only reason I didn't freak out from listening to the 1st and 2nd CD of Jimmy Van M's Balance release is because for three days I kept telling myself that there is an up tempo CD. I didn't mind CD1&2 out of place pop tracks, I didn't mind the different types of music being played in sequence, or rather, out of sequence. I didn't mind hotel lobby music that reminded me of a hotel I stayed in two years ago in Vienna. All this will be forgivable when I hear the up-tempo, because I was so sure it's going to be awesome. Unfortunately, I was not quite right about my assumptions. Things did not start happening until track 5 (The Reducer 2), I don't really need some 4 tracks on the third CD to get me warmed up. Jimmy warmed me up for 37 tracks before that, in his down + mid-tempo crap. For the most part, this production of the Balance series - especially the first 41 tracks in sequence - churned out some of the most lethargic, way too slow and boring music that could be described, at best, as lullabies for grown ups. As for the last 9 tracks of the up-tempo, it is actually - dare I say - decent enough, but way too late, and even worse, ended prematurely. It should have been re-arranged with tracks in reverse order on every CD to be as follows: (CD3) up-tempo should have been (CD1) renamed (in the car from club to home), (CD2) mid-tempo should have been renamed (at home in the living room) and finally (CD1) down-tempo should have been (CD3) renamed (in your bedroom). This just makes more sense. The reason I say this is due to the disproportionate figures of dance tracks given to us (9) to the rest of the sleepy, mellow ones (41). For example, chill out house almost always start with a faster track or two then goes on to be slower gradually. I have never come across a chill CD that opened with 10 fast tracks and ended with 03 slow ones, that's not chill. JVM Balance did exactly that; took forever to ascend to a certain point, then crashed almost immediately. What gives?

Half star for CD1
Half star for CD2
3 stars for CD3

My human side:
Dance music is not the only type of beautiful music out there, Duh!
Jimmy made that very clear in this release. If you want to listen to a wide range of (not bad!) music, then Balance 10 is for you. Dive in JVM selection of what he thinks makes us human; expressions of the soul that goes beyond our daily necessities to survive. As a matter of fact, we don't even need music (or any type of arts for that matter) to survive at all. Still we listen to it, we crave it and for many people their livelihood depends on it. Music can represent our feelings, desires and wishes, and with JVM Deep Forest like music here (as I mentioned before) I can't help but wonder if he is going through a certain period in his life where spirituality and oneness with the world is a priority. I think it shows.

4 out of 5 stars from good to great!.......2007-01-06

I was very excited when discovering this set. I have heard Jimmy Van M's mixes before and they are awesome! Check out the Bedrock 2 disc set and The trance nation america set with Taylor, awesome! I was however a bit disapointed in discovering that this project was a bit different than his previous ones. The first discs is o.k., the second is good. their tempos do not differ much and could of easily been compiled into one disc. The third disc is awesome and is what I was originally expecting. I get the concept and the mood, what I don't get is how Depeche Mode and the Cocteau Twins belong in this set. They are awesome bands but have no place here. Overall it is a good set and worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Runs the gamut..........2006-12-15

from good to awesome! I get the feeling that this is an incredibly personal mix, because it encompasses so many different records, emotions, and feels. That said, the pacing and mixing shows that this mix is composed by a master-class DJ. This mix is a real journey, as cliche as that term may sound. Just take a look at the track list, and you'll see the depth of music that is informing Jimmy Van M. When you can match Brian Eno to Depeche Mode, and Cocteau Twins to Speedy J, you've got something special. The only complaint I have is that the mix is so personal that certain tracks just don't ring right for me because of differing tastes. Though for me, this only happens at the end of the Disc 2 in a giant 3 disc set! So, if you're reading this, I encourage you just to go ahead and buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly Balanced.......2006-12-14

Upon listening to Balance 005, and 008, I have grown to enjoy these sets as they would be played in a club (e.g. Crobar). The Balance series has done a fine job of choosing their DJ's, and they have certainly made, in my opinion, their most refined choice in Jimmy Van M. Coming from a Miami background, and Dj'ing in New York, he has certainly established himself as one of the best at constructing a set. He wastes no time in laying down three discs here for Balance's 10th installment.

As we all know, disc one is chill out. I really enjoyed his transition from track one into track two. Also, his track 10 into track 11 from sisters Anoushka Shankar and Norah Jones is very nice to hear. All the while, he is preparing the listener for disc 2, as is evident with the last track on disc one, which is minimal, dark, and constant.

Disc two, midtempo, it not significant of the beats per minute. Although I did not guage the three discs, two and three are more beat driven than the first, and I don't think that disc three is faster than disc two, but they are more around the same bpm's (124 - 126). The highlights of disc two are basically every track. (Upon looking at the sleevenotes, one can see that all the tracks, more pertinent to discs one and two, span the course of 12 years. One track was from 1994!) Mr. Mulligan's track selection for disc two is so good that each track blends into another as a seamstress connects one piece of cloth to another to form a style all her own.

Disc three, for me the culmination of years of research and studio editing, is Jimmy Van M's tour de force. From the opening track, its guitar riffs catch you, and his signature "two of the same track" intro begins to produce a spellbinding experience. In this disc, your journey takes you to the discs' seventh track, where the peak is worthy of throwing your hands in the air and jumping up and down, then realizing that you're still in your car on the way to work. It slowly builds again, from 8 to the second to last track, which is by 16 Bit Lolitas. A heavily catchy tune sets the stage for the close of the disc, which is by no means climatic and crazy, but instead leaves a grin on your face that says "Wow, that last track was really good (perfect beat, perfect vocals), and so was that first track, and so was everything in between."

After listening to all three discs, they have an element about them that requires deeper understanding, and also requires repeated listening. I feel that even after 5-6 listens, I can never fully comprehend the composition of the set, and I will need to listen to it over and over to fully understand what was going through the DJ's mind when creating this masterwork. I'd recommend that you purchase this disc and expect not just a 3 cd set that that will last until Balance 011, but will last to define the genre for the decade to come.

5 out of 5 stars Ulysses.......2006-02-09

This album is actually the demo for the album, Robert liked to put out the demo and never record the actual album because he felt it suited the songs more. It was probably written regarding his divorce from Hilarie.

4 out of 5 stars When you break free, baby you'll see.......2004-12-16

Albums about break ups are about a dime a dozen. Actual break up albums, however, are as rare as it gets. A truly great break up album spans the emotional chutes and ladders that have us crying under the covers, punching walls, partying with our friends or writing way too long letters that should probably never be sent. Ulysses' 010, not only completes the test, but it completes the test in about a half hour. Former Apples in Stereo frontman Robert Schnieder accomplishes the feat by following The Smiths formula, without sounding anything like the Morrissey vehicle for sadness. Ulysses delivers bitter and miserable lyrics ("inside of pissed off prostitutes/i try to get my mind off you") while keeping the music uptempo enough to allow our bleeding hearts to keep beating with hope for the future. Schnieder's messages span the gamut, wanting her back, wanting her to go away forever, before finally just wanting her to be happy. It's a simple set of messages and true to great album form, the music mirrors this simplicity. Recorded at Pet Sounds studio in Lexington, Kentucky, the album is minimalistic, allowing the lyrics and guitar heavy melodies to coexist wonderfully. Ulysses' 010 is worth ruining your perfect relationship, just to wallow in its beautiful sadness.

5 out of 5 stars Robert's Best Since Fun Trick Noisemaker.......2004-11-11

Ulysses' debut set is a wonderfully crunchy and catchy collection of Indie-rock tunes that seems heavy and light all at the same time. Ulysses is led by Robert Schneider of Apples in Stereo fame, who wrote all the songs for this album. And, although, this is ostensibly NOT an Apples album, with ".010," Robert finally finds a meeting point between the early Apples in Stereo sound and the aesthetic marking their most recent output, Velocity of Sound. That last album marked a departure for the group in terms of song speeds and structures, as well as the overall signature Apples sound. It come off as Lo-fi without sounding murky like early Apples, and Robert's songs are by far his strongest and most even since Fun Trick Noisemaker. his lyrics also show a depth lost on his material since "Discovery of a World inside the Moon." Every song on this album is infectious. You will find yourself humming the melodies to "Falcon," "Push you Away," and "Television" if not the entire album. What's more amazing is the mention in the liner notes of the album being recorded on only one mic in a garage. The sound quality is Astounding. If you were a fan of early Apples, only to sidle away with "Velocity," prak your car in Ulysses' garage and let Robert and The Gang blow you away with some wonderful Indie-Rock for the 21st Century.

5 out of 5 stars !!ULYSSES-----010----- GREAT ALBUM!!.......2004-10-27

Schneider's honest, simplistic approach is spellbinding. I was sucked in right from "Push You Away." His soul is bared in every single song, and you can't help but listen to his voice and feel what it is he has to say. This album is great!

5 out of 5 stars Surprise Surprise.......2004-10-27

Robert Schneider has done it again! A GREAT breakup record full of raw pop straight out of the garage. This may not be for every Apples in Stereo fan, because it is a slight change of pace. All of the lucious pop layers are replaced with roaring guitars and sloppy drums. But his pop sensibilities are retained and you will be singing along in no time. As I understand the entire record was recorded live into one microphone and it sounds classic! My current favs are 'push you away' and 'television'. It's nice to have such a ballsy and consistent record come out right when you need it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album, Best Heavy Import Around.......2007-03-19

I recently purchased OSC-DIS and was blown away by its greatness. I liked the album so much that I decided to purchase the follow-up album 010. Right away I was pulled in and hooked. I love the music, vocals, artwork, everything about the album. Sure I can't always understand the lyrics (even the English ones), but the quality of the overall sound is immaculate. Sure this may be a big, fancy word to be using for such an item, but any fan of rock, metal, punk, industrial, techno, and everything in between should understand. The guitars are heavy, drums are excellent, and the futuristic sound of the vocals fit perfectly. Definately check this album out. Any fan of heavy music should dig it.

Key Tracks: All of the tracks.

5 out of 5 stars A BLISTERING SONIC SHOW OF FORCE.......2002-02-15

I'll keep this relatively short and to the point; these guys are MAD GENUISES OF A VERY LOUD AND COLORFUL SORT! Creativity, mad musicianship skills and a keen sense of humor propell these rascals higher and further than any other band you know. Fast, loud, melodic, crazy, serious, unrelenting, focused, tight - you name it and the capsules deliver. A very nice and totally refreshing dose of what the future holds.

5 out of 5 stars Somehow even better than Osc-Dis.......2001-11-06

After the release of Osc-Dis in the West earlier this year I just had to get more. So imagine my surprise to discover that The Mad Capsule Markets had already released an new album in Japan.
To be perfectly honest, i didn't expect them to be able to top Osc-Dis, but they did. Every track on this album is fresher and more exciting than any other band i've heard in years. It used to be a simple admiration for their music, but now the Capsules are simply my favourite band in the world. Buy this NOW!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Another winner in the nite life series.......2002-07-09

Peace Division, known for their impossibly deep dubby rumbling tunes diversify their sound on this release and deliver a smooth tech house mix. Starting off with the deep and minimal "Decomposition" by Deleuze, you might think you're in line for another 70 minutes of progressive blandness but that's not the case. From their we get some rumbling builders and even a few full on vocal tracks and then the mix takes off and never looks back with Oscar G vs. Stryke's "hypnotised" This is the sound of 4 a.m. A heads down groover that locks you in to the sound. The set ends on a high note with Box Boy's "Doob Moon" and the epic "I have put out the light" by James Holden
Peace Division are a big favorite of Danny Tenaglia. So if you like his sound then you'll love this. Deep and dark but never getting lost in a monotonous groove that seems to be happenning as of late on the scene.

4 out of 5 stars Nite Life with Peace Division.......2002-07-08

Let's face it in the world of DJ mix compilations, it is easy to put one out. Get 10 - 15 records together, beat match them and your set. So it is understandable that there are several continuing series of mix CD's. What is hard to find are series that don't let you down. NRK's Nite Life has put out ten thus far from H:Foundation, DJ Garth, to a Joeski & Oinionz double disc set, all top notch DJ's and mixes. So now with NRK's latest release of a Peace Division mix they continued with their standard of high quality mixes. Peace Division made up of Clive Henry and Justin Drake are first rate producers who have had their tracks bolstered by the likes of John Digweed and Carl Cox, now show that they are also first rate DJ's as well with a subtle dubbed out mix. These guys are not going for flash they are going for groove. The tracks they have chosen bring one another out in a flawless mix, and because the tracks are sometimes so similar and allowed to play out you often cannot tell where one track ends and the next begins. There are build ups, however you don't really notice them until they have dropped the beat and you find yourself nodding along with the music. Justin and Clive seemed to focus more on the track selection, positioning, and less on attention calling mixes giving the CD and overall even feel. Their hands off approach to mixing is oddly remincent of Ritchie Hawtin's approach and style of mixing yet entirely their own voice. This is a solid mix and buy.
