I can't really say that I've been a chillout music-goer for a long time though I've always enjoyed the music not knowing what genre it is. I've already purchased two titles (2): Sub-Zero Collection & Chillout Lounge Vol. 1 and have fallen for them both. Trust in WATER MUSIC RECORDS and know that you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Omigod: Sexy, Flawless, Must have if you are into chill!.......2005-12-30

Oh, what can I say but excellent deep sexy music from deep and sexy musicians. Some of these artists I have not heard of but I will be looking for more from them. This is an excellent compilation of chill music. I would go as far as to say it is a must have. This cd covers what you need for dancing, chilling, making love or watching the stars lying on a blanket at night.
Kewl!

5 out of 5 stars An ultra-chilled collection from Water Music.......2004-01-30

"Sub Zero" contains two CDs of some of the best in ambient/chill-out/electronica. These tracks, many un-released and hard-to-find, come from an amazing array of internationl artists including Goldfrapp, Gotan Project, Trnce Vision Steppers and Amadeus Tapioka.

The first CD is titled "Fahrenheit" and contains more upbeat tunes, such as "Utopia" by Goldfrapp, "Glide" by Afterlife, "Last Tango in Paris" by Gotan Project and "Foto Viva" by Mo' Horizons. CD two is titled "Centigrade" and contains the more mellow, chill out grooves. Some of the best on this CD are "Opium" by Moodswings, "Carpe Noctem" by Pulsar Bleu, and "Heaven" by Electric Skychruch.

This is a great collection for anyone who's already into ambient/chill out music or for those wanting to get a taste of it.

5 out of 5 stars Sub Zero is ultra chilled and quite essential.......2003-06-18

After getting into the electronica/chill out/trip-hop/downtempo genre with CD's from bands like Zero 7 and Herbert,I started to purchase many "Chill-Out" CD's. Now, with over 20 CD's in under a year and from many different sources, I have to say that Sub Zero really caught my ear. Amadeus Tapioca is simply amazing with his beats that keep dancing along, while songs like Electric Skychurch from Heaven are really catchy tunes. This CD is actually 2 CD's in one. One CD has songs you can dance to, while another CD is more for just listening and chilling. If you like Electronica at all, get this CD. You will not be disappointed. Now if only the DJ's in the Sacramento clubs would get wise to this music : )

5 out of 5 stars SUB-ZERO IS NICE NICE, BABY!!!.......2003-03-04

When I first saw "Sub Zero", I was like: "Not another compilation CD from Water Music Records! Dang, How many do they have out?" Anyway, I had the cash in my pocket and being the avid music fan that I am, I bought the CD, rationalizing on the way to the register why I needed it. "It says "The Essential Chill Out Collection," so of course I need it!" Then I read where it said "Sub Zero" was full of pereviously unreleased tracks and rare imports. More reason for me to buy the CD, not to mention the myriad of artists on the compilation that I had never heard of before. I love variety and this CD would be perfect in my collection. My one problem with the CD is the ubiquitous "Utopia" which seems to be on every comp CD I buy. Enough already! At least they did remix the song, which was a delight, but I'm still tired of hearing it. Also, Gotan Project is another group I am tired of seeing on comp CDs...but at least they didn't put "Epoca" on this one. If I see that song one more time...
With that said, I would love to hear more from outstanding artists like P.F.L., E.D. Swangz, Amadeus Tapioka, Mo' Horizons and France & Dom...They have really killer tracks on "Sub Zero" that are sure to get you movin' and pressing the repeat button on your CD player over and over! All in all, truly an "Essential Chill Out CD" to own!

5 out of 5 stars I Loved It!!!.......2006-09-22

If you like Chill Out...probably my favorite genre of Electronica...then this is a great CD to add to your collection. If you don't know much about Chill Out or other "Ambient" type music, then you might also want to consider purchasing this as it's got a good selection of different things.

It's actually a collection of several separately sold CD's including: Later (2 CD Set); Electrochill; Electroburn; chillhouse; Chill, Vol.1; and Carol C. First Impressions. I would put them in about that order in terms of best to worst although all have something to offer. The 1st 3 (4 if you count Later as two) CD's are awesome but the quality falls off somewhat after that. You can't beat it for ~$20 though. FYI...somebody else on here said they liked "The Essential Trance Collection" but not this one. If feel exactly the opposite..."Trance" was a joke, but "Chill" is a must have for those who enjoy Ambient and Lounge type music!

4 out of 5 stars Good variety of Down Tempo music styles.......2005-04-01

Contrary to other reviewers opionions this set has a lot going for it. This collection features everything from Trip-Hop to Ambient Drum and Bass to Slow House. Now, there are better albums out there if you want the best trip hop, or the best ambient drum and bass experience. The point here is though you get a great variety for something like $4.40 a piece ($3.60 per going off of amazons price). I also enjoy the comments about this set being "boring." I would hope a box set called "The Essential Chill Collection" wouldnt make me want to jump out of my seat. The point is to relax you and just lay back and enjoy.

This set features a variety of CDs that were origionally released over the years by themselves. What i find interesting is that one CD featured in the set is called "Later" by various artists. It is a double disc and provides two of the CDs in the set. This CD sold seperately on amazon sells for $21 and has good reviews. So if youre buying from amazon, you add an extra $4 and you get FIVE more CDs.

Discs 1, 2, and 5 feature predominately Trip Hop. Being a big fan of trip hop I was pleased with these albums. Some tracks were a bit lacking but i got to hear a lot of artists ive never heard before. Basically though if you like trip hop, youll like these discs.

Disc 3 is an ambient drum and bass CD. Its no LTJ Bukem but it offers a nice laid back dnb vibe. My one real problem with this CD is that it was a bit short.

Disc 4 brought me back to the 90s with the old school kind of chill techno that was common back then. Certainly was not something i was expecting in this collection, but i found was a decent addition.

Disc 6 was more of a mainstream slightly higher tempo CD. It featured a lot of housey chillout tracks. Noteables on this CD being Underworld, Moby, Air, Kosheen etc.

Disc 7 is labeled "Chillhouse" and thats exactly what it is. Definately the CD that impressed me the least. You know, the typical cheap vocals and house beat.

All that said I was happy with my purchase. Now, could there be a better collection of chillout tunes? Certainly. Is this still a great deal? Absolutely.

1 out of 5 stars Dont waste your money.......2004-10-15

I own the Essential Trance collection, and it wasn't too bad. Not all of the cds were good, but a few of them had some really decent tracks for the first 4 or 5 tracks (then they all eventually went to crap) I thought eh I'll give this a try.

$30 is a bit of a steep investment in music, but granted of course it's got a whopping 7 cds, so surely it's got to have something good. Sofar I'm halfway through the set, and I have not been inspired at all. It's got a few tracks that are 'ok', but there's a lot of stuff that's just extremely boring. Not really overly repetitive, just.. boring. I think I'd be more inspired listening to elevator music than this set. I must agree with Randy's review on this product. Don't waste your money like I did.

2 out of 5 stars Essential for what?.......2003-12-27

The only chill I got was thinking how much I wasted on this purchase. Having recently acquired "Ibiza -The History of Chillout" (which I highly recommend) on a whim during a recent trip to London I guess I was just on a Chillout boxed set high. I decided to try my luck again and purchased this simply because the store clerk said it had arrived recently, and at a whopping seven cd's in the set I was sure it was loaded with good stuff. Unfortunately this volume just means more to suffer while trying to plow your way through the complete set. Of course there are a few good tunes in the set by a few of the standard artists, as prominently noted on the box cover in order to suck you in. However why purchase 7 cd's simply to pare it down to the equivalent of one good one? As well those cuts featured by these artists are not anything new and exiting if you already have a good collection of Moby and the like. A week too late for me to heed any advice after I made the purchase a local critic reviewed this set as "passionless tunes and mediocre producers" and in his words, "what good is bad music when silence will suffice?"
