The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Texas based Drive Thru Records act, Halifax have done it again with their long awaited debut album "The inevitability of a Strange World". Produced by Machine (Armor for Sleep, Lamb Of God, Boys Night Out) and Lou Giordano (Taking Back Sunday, Sunny Day Real Estate), the album is the band's full-length debut and a follow-up to the 2004 EP "A Writer's Reference". Halifax have changed from the "Sydney" sound t a melodic 80s metal with a touch of emo tendencies here. It's been quite some time since I have heard such a passionate album opener as on this album. "Nightmare" is quite possibly the most catchiest songs on the album. The riffs and the screaming "hell yeahs" on the chorus to "Our Revolution" make me think that it may as well be a Mötley Crüe tribute song. Gang chants and emo-like lyrics will make this album a favorite amongst the teens while still maintaining itself in the older crowd primarily by the wonderfully crafted guitar riffs. "Hey Italy" incorporates a violn-esque backgroud at the end of the song which is quite astonishing. No need to worry about "filler tracks" on this album either--songs like "under fire" bring the rock just as much as "Our Revolution" does. Lyrically speaking, the album is well-written and delived in just the right way. This is most apparent in the track "Snow in Hollywood". Throw on your old Motley Crue shirts, go pick up this album, and rock out to one of the albums that was chosen by Alternative Press magazine as one of the "Most Anticipated Releases of 2006".

I've lost most of my respect for Drive Thru because of Halifax.......2006-08-03
Halifax may be the single worst band I've ever heard this label release, keeping in mind that I've seen DTR through some pretty rough times (remember I Am The Avalanche?). How could anyone actually rate this as a 5 star outing? It isn't even catchy, let alone groundbreaking or 'unique'. Bands like Hit The Lights and All Time Low may be totally unoriginal, but atleast they're fun to listen to. Halifax is just painful! Copy and paste post-hardcore emo has never sounded quite this bad.
If Taking Back Sunday sucked really, REALLY bad, they'd probably still sound better than Halifax.
For fans of: Crappy music and cheap Hawthorne Heights imitations.

Yeah, it has the same powerful vocals, guitar and rhythms as their first. Not to mention it has another killer title (the latter two albums do as well)- that always helps!
This was the first KoD album I heard but "Death of Cool" is my favourite. You can never get enough of the ethereal genius that KoD creates.
This is a great start in the KoD world. Fans of KoD, should own this as well as the other three albums. Oh and the EPs, singles, compilations...

I loved Ride's "Nowhere", Catherine Wheel's "Ferment", MBV's "Loveless", Slowdive's "Just for a Day", and Lush's "Deluxe", but "Strange Free World" by Kitchens of Distinction stands out among the best of the shoegaze set, and is the sadly unedrappreciated leader of the pack, the alpha chief star destroyer, if such a thing exists. Produced by Hugh Jones (some Echo and the Bunnymen), this second K.O.D. release from the year 1991 is gold from beginning to end. Unfortunately, this was a time when all of this great music from the UK was being overshadowed by a dumb stateside genre of music called grunge. Blech. Now, kids are discovering this stuff once again, but still not enough in my opinion. While most of the groups I mentioned earlier were great, their voices tended to get lost in the layers of guitars and effects and the lyrics at times were a bit vague and abstract, which is fine. However, it's refreshing to hear an album that is just as sonically engaging, if not better sounding than the others ("shoegazey" if you will) yet with honest, cohesive, clear lyrics and excellent vocalls pitifully copied by the likes of the vastly overrated Interpol (God, and those annoying clothes and haircuts--come on people!!!). Again, while the atmospheric, shoegaze aspect of the music is very appealing to me, it's those timeless lyrics that bring it home again and again. And, these guys can raise the tempo and rock like none other. Songs like "Gorgeous Love" and "Drive that Fast" are just a couple of the highlights on this unsung classic released during a very exciting time in current music history,and still sound brand new today.

Another KOD reviewer on Amazon had problem with some of the gay-themed lyrics. If you can't get over that, then frankly you don't deserve to hear it. The guitar effects will put you in a trance, and the songs flow together seamlessly. One of the reasons KOD didn't have mainstream success is their songs are some heavy duty songs about LOVE, both gutwrentching, and glorious.
One of the top 10 CD's that changed my life.

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".
Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".
The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"

Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.
Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.
Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.
On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.

When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!

I can't completely explain why I give this five stars after giving the first two sets four stars each. This is just the way the opera, in particular, strikes me. I'm no great opera fan, and to my knowledge, America just has not yet proved itself in the operatic field although it's tried. It will take time, but I do see Copland's work as someday being considered the best example of American opera. This is all subjective opinion, obviously, and I'm sure there are those more knowledgeable who will disagree. So be it.
All in all, these three sets will give you a complete overview of one of America's most important composers.

A very enjoyable farewell cd for this version of the band........2006-02-07
They perform all of the songs (except "One Breath Away") from their last studio album "Delicate Flame of Desire", as well as many more selections from their other two albums. There are even a couple of "hidden track" songs tacked onto the last track "Out of Reach", which appear to be previously unreleased songs. With 134 minutes of music here, and a nice cd sleeve with photos of all the band members in concert, you really get your money's worth (assuming you can find it selling in the $20.00 range!).
If you're a newcomer to this band from Wales, Karnataka's music is sort of a cross between progressive rock and classic rock, with some Celtic/folk influences. They probably share the closest similarities with Mostly Autumn, except the vocals are all female. But you'll also find references to Hogarth-era Marillion, Genesis, Enya and some Renaissance. While their songs are mostly in the 5-7 minute range, they successfully weave romantic themes with lush, hypnotic atmospheres and catchy melodies.
The sound production on this live album is really great. Jones' fine vocals are harmonized sweetly with the voice of Anne-Marie Helder (who also plays flute). The standout instrumentalist in these performances has to be Paul Davies whose Andy Latimer/David Gilmour guitar passages really shine here on this cd - even more than on the studio albums.
This album will appeal to many lovers of music in general. There aren't any "killer" tracks that stand out and really move you, but there also aren't any "clunkers". Just a lot of good, pleasurable music of a slightly different nature. I recommend this cd as a great overview of a very entertaining band.
I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:

Very few times I take my time for doing musical reviews but in the case of STRANGE BAHAVIOUR is a must to do so. If you have ever heard previous KARNATAKA'S works and you thought that they were good.....please disregard that idea. KARNATAKA is a supergroup that performs 1,000 better live. The album is composed of two fantastic CD'S. Rachel Jones is one of the best female vocalist today and the duets with Annie Marie Helder are simply marvelous...Just listen to TALK TO ME, a tremendous song that describes the unique encounter of any men or women with the Lord Jesus or The right time.....is amazing!!!!! At stage, Edwards at the keybords, Davis guitar, Jones and Griffiths performances show that this people really can play almost to perfection.....Without any doubt, this is the best album that I heard in 2004.....simply a PERFECT JEWEL!!!!!!!

Beautiful Singing Sabotaged by Insipid Lyrics.......2000-02-27
Wonderful singing, really wonderful, but 12 (of 22) of the songs are marred by the insipid lyric translations of Merl Puffer and Deena Cavalieri. Unfortunately, the singers sing so well that you hear every word with crystal clarity. Here are some lines: Darling trust in me, for I'll always be a loving subject waiting your command...for a love sincere, conquers every fear...champagne will flow, and our hearts will glow...social pressures I faithfully shun, I defy, those who pry, boredom exists everywhere, and I'll escape from it's snare...ah, you see, what love can be...I languish as I linger, from love's fragile bloom, if you'll but raise a finger, I'll clime to your room, the night is growing colder, the world is growing older, don't turn an icy shoulder. I am no expert on poetry but I think that stuff is awful. If these lyrics won't bother you, these are beautifully sung operetta/show tunes. Tucker and Della Casa are fantastic.
An enchanting disc.......1999-04-15
The great surprise of this disc is that it is sung in English using slightly suspect English lyrics, rather than translations it seems, of the non-American works. Mostly it does not matter much, occasionally they are an improvement or even enlighten the music, such as Lehar's "I have been in love before" from his Paganini. In other cases they seem quite unnecessary or simply wrong and difficult to sing to boot. Given that Tucker also sometimes applies an accent that seems vaguely Viennese and it might seem to add up to a recipe for disaster. Not so at all. The voice wins you over within minutes and the recording and remastering were clearly undertaken with equal and genuine affection.
Then there are the pieces sung by other than the tenor, such as Lisa Della Casa singing Vilja and the Merry Widow Waltz, once again in English, with her individual timbre complete with her usual melancholy tones plus simply exquisite top notes, no strain at all. Della Casa has a distinct and charming (natural, of course) Swiss-German accent mainly evident in the Waltz she sings & hums with John Reardon.
In between we find Tucker singing one of the sacrileges of the re-constructed English lyrics, Zeller's "Roses from Tyrol", it misses the originals dialectic charm, "Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tyrol" does not translate somehow as "In the Tyroler lover knows the special promise of a rose for every blosom that you send swears that your love will never end.......". But the singing is so lovely and the last top note bewitchingly floated you forget the quibbles.
The tempos are leisurely but never quite pure schmalz, even in the Grieg' Song of Norway.
The worst lyric irritation I found to be Heuberger's "Im Chambre separee" as "in our seculded rendevue." English instead of German and French as well as being sung by a tenor, for which it may well have been written but here it lacks the soprano accompaniment. I prefer this as two soprano voices in the original sprachen. The text here really is not well matched to the notes though Tucker fits the syllable's across octaves where necessary, swallowing others that can't be fitted in. Again he finishes on an amazing high note floated literally into the distance.
I am amazed how Allers & Tucker make the Romberg piece sound like an operratic version of Rawhide. I adore Hadley & Swenson in "Stranger in Paradise" as well as the others, especially the rare Della Casa and as I type this I am listening to it all on the computer's CD player for the N'th time since I unwrapped my considerably less than 10 bucks worth.
Recommended with reservations on the lyrics but not the extent of content. For purists it will provide many hours of unravelling fact from fiction whilst producing a glow of well being in the process.
