4 out of 5 stars It grows on you.......2002-07-26

I didn't like it when I first listened, but that's not uncommon with CDs I eventually find really interesting. Plan to take some time to read the lyrics -- they are different, fun, and clever. The harmonies are similarly appealing. I would especially recommend "Cat Fight" to all feminists.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Their Best.......2002-04-21

Generally, there are three elements that I look for in ska music. They are:
1. Happy tune/vibe
2. Horns section
3. Good Lyrics
Since ska is by nature always happy, this lives up to that expectation, but it pretty much ends there. They eliminated their horns section after making "The Old Album", and so far their lyrics have not made much of an impact on me. Just buy this if you are a DHC fan and already have some of their other stuff. If you're a DHC virgin, I recomend "Honey, I'm Homely!" perticularly tracks 1, 11, & 12.

5 out of 5 stars DHC numbawan !!.......2001-09-30

This is my first DHC album, and by golly it won't be my last! Filled with catchy upbeat riffs and tight harmonizing from the two lead vox. I'm amazed (but immensely grateful) that we haven't seen DHC on mainstream radio.

5 out of 5 stars superb.......2000-08-15

everyone has given this cd 5 stars and its well deserved. on a car ride home from vacation once i listened to this cd 5 times in a row. a lot of times when i first start listening to a song on purr it doesnt sound too good but then by the end of the song im blown away by how unbelievably good it is. it all just comes together to make songs that are so catchy words cant even describe it. cricket is such a great and different song. it sounds kinda like jewels "you were meant for me" i wonder how many other people think that. though i do like cricket a lot better. by other favorites are beverly kills, setting sun, everything to lose, nothing to lose, cat fight and cricket this cd is just sooo good you have to buy it

5 out of 5 stars The Best Dance Hall Crahsers CD Yet!.......2000-07-20

While DHC has never brought out a disappointing CD, "Purr" is definitely better than the rest. Their incredible mixture of pop and punk music has created a CD that is impossible to put down. "Purr" is a must have!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Grab this amazing soundtrack quickly!.......2007-05-18

Finally, this wonderful soundtrack is once again available, now on CD!

Except there's one tiny drawback - it's part of the Rhino Handmade collection of limited CD releases. Each one individually numbered and some released limited to as few as 1,000 copies. Gay Purr-ee's soundtrack release is limited to 5,000 copies. Not 5,000 per chain/store/whatever...5,000 total, for everywhere. Meaning Amazon is likely to have less than 1,000, Rhino's online store is likely to have less than 2,000, and then a few thousand more for the rest of the country. So pick up your copy quickly, because once all 5,000 are sold, that's it! (However, Rhino IS selling a digital download version, so if you can't buy a physical CD, you can always buy the download version.)

The soundtrack has been nicely remastered for this CD release. A tiny bit of tape noise still exists on the CD, and there's occasional clipping from the loudness of the recording, but overall, the quality is superb!

Of course, the reason this soundtrack is so spectacular is because of the presence of Judy Garland. Gay Purr-ee was Judy's sole cartoon voiceover work, and the team of E.Y. Harburg and Harold Arlen, who had penned her signature song Over The Rainbow for her in 1939, wrote several incredible songs for Judy for this film. Take My Pand Paree, Paris Is A Lonely Town, and Roses Red Violets Blue are wonderful songs that showcase her incredible voice. But the highlight of the album, which I also consider to be one of her finest performances ever, is Little Drops Of Rain. Despite the fact that this movie is basically a kid's movie, Little Drops Of Rain is quite an adult lament, as many have said of the song. This song is also available on Rhino's Judy Garland In Hollywood: Her Greatest Movie Hits compilation for VERY good reason - it's one of the best songs she ever sang.

I wholeheartedly recommend this soundtrack. If the Amazon price seems a little steep, it's only about $20 at Rhino's website. Don't wait too long to buy it though - it could be sold out tomorrow!

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, But a Disappointing Restoration.......2006-04-05

Rhino, in the liner notes for this CD, refers to the Gay Purr-ee soundtrack as having been restored from the original Warner master tapes.

What exactly has been restored is open to debate, as the entire album is marred with audible tape hiss and occasional dropouts. If any restoration of these elements took place, it isn't audible in the finished product.

It's still a "must have" for anyone who loves Judy Garland...but with the tiniest bit of effort, this long overdue CD could have been worlds better. As things stand, it's mediocre at best.

More than a decade before starring as Catwoman to Adam West's Batman--years and years, in fact, before pop singers were referred to as "divas"--Eartha Kitt made herself in the image of a gold digger with a lust not just for cash, but for lust itself. This 22-track compilation is built around her signature '50s novelties ("Just an Old Fashioned Girl," "I Want to Be Evil," "C'est Si Bon," "Santa Baby"). A handful of ballad performances add variety, but even without them there's plenty of spice to be had here. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars As good or better than the original 45 record.......2003-08-26

Eartha Kitt needs no recommendation. She was in a class of her own. The songs are the best of the 50's and 60's and her best.
The CD is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars A mere five stars is not enough.......2003-02-22

A stupendous album from a stupendous talent! There is probably no better single-disk introduction to the musical phenomenon of Eartha Kitt than this one. Miss Kitt invented the term "sex kitten", and her own genre and legend. She has the skill and sophisticated humour to bring any song to life, even one's you've heard before. Her rich voice is as subtle as her wicked humour, and she sings each song differently dependant on the character of the song itself. A testament to her talent is that one of her first US hits was sung in Turkish with only witty remarks made in English (Uska Dara, track 18). This album is full of her classics which don't date, just get better with each playing. Her songs "Just an old fashioned girl", "The heel" and "Santa baby" will never be surpassed in lyrical sophistication.

5 out of 5 stars Full marks!.......2002-08-21

This CD is absolutely perfect. Excellent voice, excellent recording, excellent equalization and excellent proportions of sound images make this CD an excellent buy. I didn't know too much about Eartha Kitt but now I have fallen in love with her sexy purr. All songs are highly entertaining and Eartha performed each one in perfect pitch with ease. I believe the producer and the recording engineers of this CD should be given the audiophile awards. This is definitely a must-buy!

5 out of 5 stars It's Purr-fection.......2002-07-23

One Miss Eartha Kitt, she's definitely a unique vocalist in the history of popular song. A sultry character, she vamps her way through classic after classic on this hit collection. Some of the most noteable tunes would include "I Want To Be Evil", "Mink, Schmink", "Let's Do It", "Lilac Wine", and "My Heart Belongs To Daddy". Almost every track is a fun listen, especially her holiday classic, the notorious "Santa Baby". This is definitely a fun collection of songs. All wonderfully interpreted by the thrilling Eartha Kitt.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Kitt is Purrfect.......1999-12-17

I had the pleasure of seeing Miss Kitt for the third time in Georgetown last week, and I must say that she never ceases to amaze me. I have several of her older albums on CD, but the vocal quality of this disc is far superior. I only wish there were a more comprehensive collection of her more recent work (aside from the 5-disc "Eartha-quake" box set covering her early work). Many people don't realize that she has continued to record throughout the 90's, but it is very difficult to track down these recordings. She performs several of these newer songs during her current performances; yet, there is nowhere for these recordings to be found. Still, "Purrfect Greatest Hits" is a great collection.

4 out of 5 stars Visions Need Some Glasses.......2006-06-01

I must admit that I enjoyed this sampler CD introduction to the musical world of Alan Hovhaness more than the other reviewer. These are peaceful and lovely recordings and renditions of these works. It was refreshing to hear a more varied collection of Hovhaness' sound than the repetitiveness that he is often criticized for. One of the criticisms of Hovhaness was that he was trying to be like Vaughan Williams in every piece (which is not true). He had a specific spiritual "vision" that lent a characteristic sound to his music like many other composers.

My one problem with this affordable disc is that the track listing is incorrect for the pieces: Mountain Idyll and Sonata Fred the Cat (both solo piano works). They are listed as having multiple tracks (#5-7) and (#9-12) when in actuality they are on the CD in single one track movements, so the CD comes out actually having 8 tracks (1 per work sampled). For a while I thought I had the wrong CD or it was defective. Then I figured it out by putting it in my CD Rom and it displayed the actual track listing with titles through Windows Media Player.

If that glitch doesn't bother you too much, this is a nice and afforable intro to Hovhaness' music. - - Max Stoltenberg, LPC

2 out of 5 stars Hovhaness needs more maturity.......2005-02-02

I was very dissapointed when I heard this album. The sound is tinny, strident, and unbalanced. I can imagine how hard it is for unfunded orchestras to make recordings, but this sounds like a scraggly bunch of pickup players who play with no soul. Hovhaness demands a fuller, burnished tone. Even worse than the poor sound quality and sketchy intonation is the lack of a sense of flexibility and nuance. The hollowness of the playing would not be so offensive if there were a feeling of expansiveness, languidness, or generousity. I can't help thinking the composer would be very saddened by this effort. I hope Mr. Clark's realizes someday that music is not something that can be hammered out like a wall street stock deal. The kind of crassness on display here is better suited to commerce or (lamentably), politics.

These writers, CC Couch, Gloria Nissenson and Teddy Irwin, have entered the mind of cats to bring us this hummable, lovable CD.

Question is, I have a dog too.
Are you guys going to do the same thing for him??
    Please do. We can't wait.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have CD For Cat Lovers...And Music Lovers.......2004-04-29

Our entire family has enjoyed this CD. The song lyrics range from the very humorous, as in "You Can't Tell A Cat What To Do"...to the soulful "I Purr" to the totally delightful and whimsical "We're Beautiful And We Know It".

The melodies are just as varied as the lyrics...with songs displaying everything from a 50's do-wop sound to saucy Latin flavors with so many genres in between.

CC Couch has completely captured the mind of a cat and put it into words every human can understand.

Cats and cat lovers will purr when they hear this delightful cat-song album.
The people who wrote it truly love and understand cats. They have a good time describing them.So did I when I heard this album. Best cuts for me were "I Purr", "You Can't Tell A Cat What to Do", "Beautiful and We Know It", "Feline Hall of Fame" and, of course, "If You Love Us" (spay/neuter song)

      Product Description

PURR MACHINE is a hybrid of alternative rock, gothic, bohemian, ethereal and electronica inflences, they hope the listener will be engulfed by the sound, not unlike some kind of drug to take away the pain, or perhaps establish it deep within. Now they have an upcoming full length cd called Starry which promises to be a very heavy experience, an intoxicating cornucopia of catchy melodies, driving rhythms, and the band s trademark lyrical style. Some of the musical contributions on Starry consist of drums on several songs by Chris Vrenna, of Nine Inch Nails/Tweaker fame, and guitars on the song Sister by William Faith of Faith and the Muse". Statik from Collide did some loop treatments on the song "Sad Im Gone". Guitarist, Kirk Hellie of Pink Noise Test, who also contributed his unique sound to Ging Ging also plays throughout Starry . Byron Brown of Mercurine also plays guitar on Starry and he and Kirk have played with Purr Machine live. Like previous Purr Machine releases, Starry resists pigeonholing into any one genre, Bringing freshness to subject matter as cliched as love, loss, sadness and hope isn t easy, but the songwriting team of frontwoman Betsy Martin (formerly of Caterwaul) and musician Kevin Kipnis (former Bassist of seminal goth rockers Kommunity FK) self-describe their sound as snuggling under an electric blanket submerged in water . A Purr Machine song can sometimes be like a conversation with an old friend - there s an unspoken, direct, natural familiarity that draws you in without hesitation. Kevin s musicianship is first-rate, painting an irresistible sonic landscape, combined with the incomparable voice of Betsy Martin. Every thought and feeling is fully realized, every emotion clarified in her unique, distinctive croon. Siren and seductress, friend and confidante, she can whisper in your ear, or pull you to your feet and shake you. Once you are engulfed in the Purr Machine sound, you ll never forget it.
