Product Description
2003 compilation is the fiercest selection of drum 'n' bass by two of the most prolific & respected producers in the scene - Adam F & DJ Fresh. 34 tracks from the likes of Hive, Bad Company UK feat. Rawhill Crew, Mampi Swift, Ed Rush & Optical, & Moving Fusion. Ministry Of Sound.
One:
This CD possesses great, great tracks from an era - say 2001-2004 - which was a real renaissance for the genre after its supposed "death" around 1999-2000 (although to be truthful, the genre suffered a creative lull in this time period). Tracks included like: Ed Rush and Optical "Get Ill," Pendulum's breakout "Vault," DKay and Epsilon's "Barcelona," Fresh's massive and chilling "Signal," the "Capoiera"/"The Nine" blend showcase some of the best D&B tracks ever recorded.
Two:
As a mix CD, it actually does a good job of presenting a DJ set (actually two sets) the way one would hear in a club/live. In particular, Fresh mixes like he's playing live, not recording an album in a studio (which is a problem with a lot of DJ mix compilation, whether the genre is D&B, house, techno, trance, breaks, whatever), changing tracks quickly (every two to three minutes), cutting tracks in and out, blending two tracks on top of each other (which Fresh does to great effect with Capoiera and The Nine). Also MC GQ puts in a strong performance, doing some rhyming, some "hyping"/"chatting" just as he would with an audience to interact with (even though he's laying down his vocals in a studio).
The one thing for a D&B newcomer - the compilation is MCed - and I've found people who aren't necessarily big fans of the genre but enjoy it to a certain extent are put off by the nature of jungle MCing. I personally love it, but some people find it distracting. (Hint: its more like what MCing was in early hip hop, when the DJ was still the main draw and the MC was essentially backup, an MC in the truest sense of the word - of course thats changed now, with the MC by far overshadowing the DJ/producer in the hip hop realm).
Nevertheless, I highly recommend this compilation - it has staying power. I still listen to it in the summer of '07, three years after buying it. The ideal introduction to a still exiting genre.
