Layover

Editorial Reviews

Encore bears one of hip-hop's greatest weapons--a booming baritone that sounds menacing without even trying. That signature sound has armed past legends like KRS-One and Rakim, and Encore's flinty flow benefits immensely from his gravelly tone. On his sophomore CD, this Bay Area rapper leaves a stain on the brain with muscled verses for songs like the fast-moving "Essentially Yours" and the steady-thumping title track. The bulk of Layover is dedicated to mic deconstruction, but he shows some range on cuts like the love song "The Schizm" and an ode to his family, "The Way Home." Among his guests are some you'd expect, like fellow verbal bruiser (and label mate) Pep Love ("City Livin'"), but he also finds the long-lost Ladybug Mecca (from Digable Planets) for the playful men vs. women tussle "Real Talk." Longtime production partner Architect mans the boards alongside Seattle's Jake One and Chicago's Vitamin D for a sound steeped in a mix of soul and jazz aesthetics. As he brags on "Traditional Slick Talk," "I'm state of the art, not for the faint of heart." Consider yourself warned. --Oliver Wang

4 out of 5 stars The Layover.......2005-03-14

Core is one of the most sleep on rippers in the game. He has the perfect voice, delivery, and substance to be one of the ring leaders in the underground movement. The 'Layover' maybe one of the best Sophomore lp's I've ever heard. Jake One and Vitamin D are the amazing producers that give Encore some new room to roam and Architect stays fresh. Core, Jake One, and Vitamin D created a masterpiece and I hope the people are listening. Buy it NOW(...).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Release.......2004-03-28

An extremely talented emcee (my personal favorite, to be honest), Encore comes correct with his sophomore release.
The whole album is permeated with a unique realness and poetic talent that seems to come through in all of his music. (Can you say "Waterworld" from the Handsome Boy Modeling School LP or better yet, "It's Time" from D-Tension's Contact's + Contract's Compilation)?
5 *'s, easy.

4 out of 5 stars Can I get an encore for Encore.......2004-03-24

Encore does a great job of diversifying his talents on this one. I like his collabrations with other artists but I prefer to hear him spit flames by himself. One of my favorite joints is the last song on the album, Too Easy. Real Talk featuring Ladybug Mecca is a sureshot banger as well. Overall, Encore sophmore effort is way solid. Encore has one of the nicest flows in the game. Period!

4 out of 5 stars Encore- Layover.......2004-03-16

Encore second album "Layover" (2004) is a memorable release. This is the first first work I have heard from him, and I find that Encore delivers a unique album definetly worth checking out. Lyrically he is a good MC, who drops grounded intelligent lyrics, backed by some impressive production (Jake One, Vitamin D, Architect). At thirteen tracks (plus 1 skit) this is a short release, with a number of standout tracks. After intro the pumped up title track "Layover" has Encore waking people while talking about the rap game. Next comes "Break Bread", a track with a laidback beat, and a hungry determined Encore. My personal favourites come midaway and later in the album. The first of these is "The Schizm" feat. R & B singer Nathan Thomas , an outstanding track about love and a lady. The beat and concept to "Home" are just ill, Encore delivers a premium talk when talking about his genuine love for his parents and giving thanks. Encore's duet with the tight (hot) sounding Ladybug Mecca on "Real Talk", is just one of those chilled out cuts that makes me think of my woman. The fastpaced "City Livin'" feat. Pep Love is another decent collabration. Encore hooks up again with Nathan Thomas on the excellent "Faithful" an upbeat feel good track, on which Encore drops some addictively nice introspective lyrics. I would not really regard any tracks as weak on this, though a few do fall under skip material for me. Encore does shine on a number of tracks , making "Layover" an album I would recommend getting if your looking for more then the ordinary, and appreciate an MC who can deliver the goods while simply being himself.

5 out of 5 stars Layover - First In Flight,right on time.......2004-03-15

Encore steps up the game on this follow-up to Self Preservation. When I first heard 'Core on Self Preservation I was taken back by his voice;booming, strong, passionate all in the same. Then I began to REALLY listen... this cat has some ridiculously raw lyrics.A talented emcee,Encore brought Northwest producers extraordinaire Vitamin D and Jake One to work alongside Architect (one of the most underrated producers out)on this new album. The end result, big bangers.Standout tracks include 'Layover','Zigga Zigga',and 'The Schizm'(My personal fave).
Do yourself a favor and pick up the most complete hip-hop release thus far for 2004.

    Product Description

Silver Atlas Presents Layover This is music for life's journey. A soundtrack for serendipitous detours and other twists of fate. The random glance at Heathrow, which is followed by a red eye flight to Copenhagen or a midnight tryst in Hong Kong. The layover is where you catch your breath before the final departure into the adrenalin rush of the unknown. A point at which you may not be sure if you are moving toward something. Or away from something. As one story ends, a new one unfolds. Lay. Over.
