Muddy Waters had his second coming 30 years ago, when longtime friend and disciple Johnny Winter and his Blue Sky label returned him--after a series of listless recordings aimed at the rock audience--to the raw, powerful authenticity of his timeless Chess material with a series of powerful albums. Beginning with 1977's acclaimed Hard Again, a subsequent tour produced Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live, recorded onstage in Detroit, New York, and Philadelphia with Muddy's band, Winter, and harmonica player/vocalist James Cotton. Enough live material remained for Legacy to release an expanded version with an entire second disc of unissued concert material. It seems even that wasn't the end. This collection returns again to those remarkable concerts, featuring Muddy on five tracks, among them a rousing "I Can't Be Satisfied," "Trouble No More," "Caldonia," and the closing "Got My Mojo Workin'." Winter and Cotton are no less powerful, Cotton redoing Jackie Brenston's hit "Rocket '88'" and Winter ripping up John Lee Hooker's "I Done Got Over It" and "Mama Talk to Your Daughter." --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG?.......2007-07-27

The record provides a glimpse of the 1997 tour by Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter and James Cotton, along with a crackling blues band.

This was one of the most celebrated blues-band tours ever, a tour de force and come-back of sorts for Muddy made after his very fine sides produced by Winter for Blue Sky. The record does not disappoint. The three headliners take turns on vocals, so that the sides ultimately lack some of the intensity and focus of the earlier-issued Muddy "Missippi" Waters Live, which features Muddy's singing throughout. Neither Cotton nor Winter can replace the greatest bluses singer of all-time. Nonetheless with sidemen such as Cotton on harmonica, guitar players Winter and Bob Margolin or piano player Pinetop Perkins, how can you go wrong.

The record features some wicked solos, especially by Perkins and Cotton and some very tight ensemble playing. Run right out -- or click right in -- and buy it now.

4 out of 5 stars Best blues album I've heard in a long time!.......2007-07-23

What an awesome album! It is great to hear these live performances by Muddy, Johnny, and James back in the heyday. This album is a must.

5 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: ?WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU MIX, MUDDY WATERS, COTTON & WINTER? ANSWER:" OLD-TIME COOKING BLUES!".......2007-07-14

This cd is a new release of a concert tour in 1977 with Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter and James Cotton. I vacillated for days before I bought this. I have deducted, that listening to the thirty second sound bites, are worthless, especially when making a decision on electric blues. In 30 seconds, the guy might not even be done tuning his guitar! I'm going to attempt, to help you, not to have to go through, the anguish, that I went through, before I made the decision to buy this cd. First of all, you can tell how much these three guys like each other. Since this is a live performance, you hear them kidding each other throughout each song. One guy sings: "Your mother ought to know..." And one of the guys not singing lead, is yelling: "Yea tell em!" or you hear enthusiastic screams like: "Ow!" "Yea" "Do it James!" "Do it Johnny", etc. I personally think James Cotton, and his mind blowing "harp" (For you non-experienced blues neophytes, that's his harmonica! Please make a note of that!) steals the whole show. That magic harp of his, is either screeching, scratching, waling, and always cooking. If I were to try to draw a verbal picture for you, of the type of blues these fella's are playing, I'd say, think about an old black and white detective movie, and you're inside a bar, smoke is slowly circling its way to the ceiling, and in the background you hear the blues. That's the kind of blues on this cd. James Cotton, when he's not blowing the "harp", showcases a voice, that sounds like its seen, a lot of cigarettes, a lot of whiskey, a lot of women, and left it with the blues. This entire cd, is old-time "roadhouse", feeling good, blues. There are 11 songs, totaling just under sixty minutes. This is a classic taste, of old-time jamming, ELECTRIC BLUES, with the "harp", being the pulse, that never misses a blue beat! Buy this!

5 out of 5 stars As wonderful as you'd expect.......2007-06-14

They were only together for one album and tour, but the Hard Again band was the most kickass assemblage of blues talent there has ever been. They simply never played anything, either live or in studio, that was not of extraordinarily high quality. This disc absolutely smokes, and it's a welcome treat that Cotton and Winter each get a couple turns on lead vocals. It's very encouraging that there's still this much great stuff left over after after the two disc edition of Muddy "Mississippi" Waters, because that means there's likely more on the way.

4 out of 5 stars Bringin' It Back.......2007-06-14

Muddy Waters' work on Chess Records from the late 1940s to the early 1970s is truly amazing. He was the most powerful blues artist and one of the best songwriters. Many fans think he was in decline in the mid-1970s when "Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down" was recorded. This concert document should dispel those thoughts. It might have taken Muddy longer to build up a head of steam, but when he got rollin', he was as "mannish" as ever. With old pal James Cotton blowing away on harp and Johnny Winter (who ignited Muddy's revival by producing his later records on Blue Sky Records) as his co-stars on the 1977 tour, Muddy was pushed to the heights he regularly reached in his 1950s and 1960s heyday ("Pinetop" Perkins on piano, and Bob Margolin on guitar also shine). The live version of "Can't be Satisfied" - the second cut on the disc - is as strong as any live recording in his career. I saw this band at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. and the three stars were on fire and having a whale of a time. When I bought "Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down," I thought, "there is no way this recording will be as good as I remember the show." But not to worry, it's all here and hearing it again made me smile at the memories of Muddy, James, and Johnny pouring out electric blues. A rousing "Got My Mojo Working" (the encore) finishes things up nicely. Someone once said, "In Muddy Waters' hands 'the blues' is a misnomer."

5 out of 5 stars Great Work.......2006-09-22

This album introduced me to Al Jarreau. I have since picked up earlier work and later work. Unreal voice, with range and 'instrumentability' like no one else. He is fun to listen to, and a marvel to hear. This album carries several mainstream hits!!

5 out of 5 stars Moonlight Margarita.......2006-04-22

I bought this for Jarreau's classic "WE'RE IN THIS LOVE TOGETHER" but discovered so much MORE. Every cut is just TERRIFIC! The venerable "TEACH ME TONIGHT" has never been arranged or performed so beautifully and "OUR LOVE" is a sensuous treat for the ears. Listening to this CD is like a moonlit evening on a Caribbean beach - warm, breezy, and unforgettable. Bring your margarita, settle back on the sand and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Breakin, learn it, love it, live it........2005-06-19

I got this back in my dancing hay-day, they used to call me Iron Waffle Crisps, because my moves were hot and gritty, keep me away from that cardboard square, because i'll set it straight on fire! There's nothing like hangin on the corner decked out in some Zubaz pants, a members only jacket, and a fresh flock of seagulls cut, break dancin into all the ladies hearts (oh, i did more than just dance into their hearts) and this is the perfect album to do it to. oh? never seen breakin!?! well you better beat feet to your local music store and pick it up! I watched it for 1 week straight at one point in my life, and even had my own dance posse ( The Electric Sizzle Chests) it consisted of me, chubby lou, big frank, cheese grits, and lupus fury. needless to say we ruled the streets, and got all the finest break dancing groupies on the market. Anyways, do yourself a favor, and get Breakin!

5 out of 5 stars The best soundtrack out there!!!!!.......2002-09-04

Mirwais, Oasis, Massive Attack, Overseer, Klint, Madonna, even some of the grreaat one-lines from the movie. "Do you know what nemesis means?" Well get this soundtrack either way. Mirwais' "Disco Science" is awesome, as is "Fuckin in the Bushes" by Oasis (and I am NOT an Oasis fan). "Angel" by Massive Attack...incredible. Just get it.

5 out of 5 stars UK issue of snatch cd different to US issue but...........2001-01-23

that doesn't stop that from being one cracker of a cd. the UK edition has 15 songs and 8 quotes from the film making a total of 23 tracks in all. the tracks are very cool the stranglers golden brown and 10cc's dreadlock holiday and overseer's supermoves being my faves but the cd as a whole is pucker. if there is one cd soundtrack you need to get this year is the one. one quick note the US tracklisting differs slightly in terms of running order i do believe in closing if you enjoyed the film (i know i did i saw it twice) you will dig the music on this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2000-11-23

It reflects the different states u pass by when watching this movie! Great as a "car drive" cd.

Album Description

This LP was hastily compiled in 1964 to capitalize on De Shannon being chosen to support the Beatles on their US tour that year. The rather ordinary LP front cover with a photo of De Shannon from somewhere other than the tour reflects the haste. However the recordings are superb, arranged by Jack Nitzsche, they confirm what a tremendous performer she was. Originals like 'When You Walk In The Room', 'The Prince' and 'You Won't Forget Me' along with her original version of 'Needles & Pins' have been remastered from the original tapes. In addition, 8 bonus non-LP tracks from contemporary singles have been added. The album is compiled and annotated by Jim Pierson and Jackie De Shannon and many of the pictures & other material are from De Shannon's own archive. First time on CD for the whole LP, and many of the bonus tracks. RPM. 2005.

Album Details

The LP was Hastily Compiled in 1964 to Capitalise on De Shannon Being Chosen to Support the Beatles on their Us Tour that Year. The Rather Ordinary LP Front Cover with a Photo of De Shannon from Somewhere Else, Not from the Tour, Rather Reflects the Haste. However the Recordings Are Superb, Arranged by Jack Nitzsche, They Confirm What a Tremendous Performer She Is, as the Original Liner Notes Declared: "Far from Being Just a Decorative Contrast on the Stage Jackie Has Proven to Be a Terrific Success. Her Twisting, Shouting Performances have Drawn Wild Applause and Cheers from the Record Crowds at Every Concert."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jackie DeShannon or Tuesday Weld?.......2006-03-24

There are certain choices one shouldn't have to make. Even when you really don't have a chance of a choice. So let's make it one from music and one from movies. Jackie DeShannon is an easy choice for the women rock star you wish you could marry. And if she wasn't a big star then she should have been. This is a great record, great production, great vocals, great songs. Songs by a young Randy Newman, alone and with Jackie; Jack Neitzche, with Sonny Bono and with Jackie; Jackie on her own,(the magnificent and influential "When You Walk In the Room", covered by the Searchers and, great as they were, they coudn't hold a candle to the original); and, especially, Jackie with Sharon Sheeley, girlfriend of Eddie Cochran and songwriter extraordiaire, on her own, ("Poor Little Fool" for Ricky Nelson), and with Jackie, ("The Great Imposter" for The Fleetwoods.) And Jackie DeShannnon bringing it all together. There are a few covers which you may not need but they aren't bad and you can program them out if you want your DeShannon straight, no chaser; and with 20 tracks that leaves plenty on which to get drunk. If you only bought one Jackie DeShannon, should this be the one? Probably not but then we wouldn't be talking on the same wave length. One doesn't need everything she ever did and there are a couple of over-view compilations which do a good job. You do need "Jackie", recorded for Atlantic and reissued by RhinoHandmade: buy it for the original and accept the 12 bonus tracks as bonuses. And then there is ... e.g. the two-pack reissue of "Don't Turn Your Back on Me" c/w "This Is Jackie DeShannon" ... Watch for sonwriting credits for The Byrds, Brenda Lee, Irma Thomas, The Righteous Brothers and others. There is a lot to have and this record should be part of it.

4 out of 5 stars Turn it up!.......2006-05-06

I agree with the reviewer who suggested tossing the 1st disc and playing the 2nd - and play it loud! The first disc is interesting from a historical sense (with some enjoyable music), but the 2nd one is the rockin' one. This package also comes with an informative booklet. I would actually give this 3 1/2 stars for having to spend the money to enjoy one out of two discs. For people who like this era, this package is more enjoyable (to me) than the Lucky Millinder offering, "Apollo Jump."

Tiny Bradshaw never really got his due as one of the true godfather's of rock and roll and its a darn shame. It may very well have been because by the time he died a whole generation of young and more in touch rock and rollers were breaking up the house, and doing it well enough to simply drown him out. - - Still, in listening to this CD straight through, I'm reminded a bit of the career of Louis Prima, which also spanned pre-swing Jazz and peaked in the final days of Rock and Roll. One get's the impression that like Prima, Bradshaw was one of those soul survivors willing to do anything necessary to redefine himself and hang in... Prima arguably managed to do it in a much more charismatic and flamboyant manner however. Many of the top honkers of their time may have gone through boot camp in Tiny's group, but sadly, he never had that Sam Butera and Keely Smith... (James Brown's Maceo Parker, Duke Ellington's Billy Strayhorn or Sly Stone's Larry Graham) in otherwords, he had creative brilliance, but sadly was never able to package in a signature sound that was HIS and his alone. - - As a result, a billion other artists who DID have their own sound (for but a moment) perhaps were able to fly in, lift his stuff and hit do good with it.

Still, with all this said, Bradshaw managed to surround himself with the best players of his age and wrote great tunes... remarkably though if you listen to his pre JUMP / R & R stuff on DISK 1, then dig the true heavy swinging house rocking stuff on the DISK 2, you can hear how he started as a Cab Calloway meets Jimmy Durante 1930's hot Jazz shouter, and never managed to truly change his vocal style in the 50's... perhaps that's probably what kept him from becoming the true legend he deserved to be. - - Whatever, there are a number of reasons to get this CD (besides the great booklet and disk) - - I can give you 4 words actually... RED PRYSOCK and RUFUS GORE...! The tunes, with their rough edges (a few really bad vocal duos with ridiculously off key lady singers for example) by DISK 2 are great house rocking stuff... not to mention some occasional impredictable lyrics... To sum it up and if you haven't heard WALK THAT MESS (with a horrifying funky Lenny Picket type tenor shrill) you haven't really lived or swung !!! GET THIS (toss DISK ONE) after a brief lesson then get town with the BOODIE GREEN !

It seems Like E-40 Is Either Liked Or Disliked. His Flows are good His Beats stay knocking. Hearing people say He Keeps It The Same mumble grumble .
Unlike Some of todays artists Who Have Issues Identifying Them Selfs In One way or another.E-40 Found His Nitch In The Music Industry and should get a little bit more respect.E-40 stays who he is Good shit

If you're wondering if E-40 has lost his touch yet,the answer is an emphatic NO.FortyWater pretty much sticks to the same formula that has made him one of the best rappers to ever come out of the Bay Area.Highlights include the bumpin "Northern Califoolya" and "Quarterbackin'".

2 out of 5 stars A review from an E-40 fan from many years ago.......2004-08-19

This album is nothing more than candy. No substance or nutrition just sugar and corn syrup. I'm starting to realize that E-40 isn't growing up with his original audience but is staying the same as he was 10 years ago, only updating his delivery and beats. His message is the same: "me me me". I guess I just don't care anymore about E-40 and how much slang he has invented. Does anyone care? Its one thing to be a big contributor to the music industry as E-40 has been, but its another to a big contributor the the Hip Hop Cultre, which in my professional opinion (being a white suburban male) he has not. I think E-40 himself has said many times that he is a business man. I would agree. Artist? Maybe...

Rick Rock's beats are bangers though, the best song being GASOLINE. Northern Califoolya is weak, too weak. B-Legit's verse was big disappointment, flat lifeless limp. And there was another guy, keek the sneak is it?, with the worst "flow" ever who at the end of his verse complains about rappers using his slang but not giving him credit. What do these yay area rappers want? A medal? Quit crying you humps, get over yourselves and just make some music. ONE NIGHT STAND is of course great. ACT AN ASS is a song that would have been great if the chorus wasnt garbage.

E-40 can definetly be creative and flow and be colorful but he needs to grow his content or spend the rest of his life pandering/pimping himself out to these adolesent boys who ride around on there big wheels saying 'im a P-I-M-P'.

Hopefully his upcoming collabo with $hort Dog will be more than plastic beats (Rick Rock) and stupid repetitive choruses about how great the 2 of them are and how much they deserve respect and acknowledgement. Im not holding my breath though.

I must be getting old cause all these westcoasters like 40, Snoop, Ice Cube, Short seem to fallen off (to be fair the eastcoaster arent much better ie Busta, Missy, I wont even mention puffy and family). Maybe they havent fallen off, maybe they just have nothing more to contribute but trends and flash-in-the-pan club songs.

Her transformation is nothing short of astonishing. From the hulking former center for the Oakland Raiders to the slender elegant epicene goddess now before us...what a long strange trip it's been for Deshawn Frump, who now performs under the name of E-40 (a moniker derived from the standard insurance form for transsexual ops coverage). Kudos to the Thai surgeons who effected this Breckinridgean metamorphosis. Jan Morris, eat your heart out! Divine Miss E, you give hope to trannies round the world.

Her new album? Oh, it's okay, I guess. This really isn't my favorite genre. I expect sometime soon she'll give us the Broadway album we know is in her somewhere.
