Posthumously released albums are always kind of creepy. Certain, probably innocent references suddenly take on prescient overtones. Or, in the case of TLC's fourth, 3D--issued mere months after the accidental death of rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes--we're given a dreary reminder of what might have been. 3D artfully completes TLC's transformation from colorful, freewheeling fashion criminals to confident, elegant R&B divas, albeit divas with attitude and a palpable sense of humor. That's most evident in the sassy, hip-shaking classroom send-up "Quickie," where a droning schoolmarm lectures her pupils on the fine art of pulling a fast one. "Quickie" is a bit of an anomaly, though, as the majority of 3D finds the trio navigating smooth, melodic midtempo songs about love, empowerment, and that rare space in between. The women have never sounded better. As with their classic CrazySexyCool disc, TLC deftly blend soul, hip-hop, faux-gospel, pop, and consistently smart lyrics. "Turntable" is an irresistible ode to positive thinking that should be an anthem for the downtrodden everywhere. That such a hopeful message arrives on the heels of Lopes's untimely death makes 3D that much more compelling. --Kim Hughes

4 out of 5 stars Left Eye Is Truly Missed But T-Boz & Chilli Pulled It Off.......2007-03-11

I'm a true TLC fan and have all of their albums but I was a little scared of getting the album because if it was bad, I didn't want to hear it. But despite Left Eye's death, the album came out pretty good. The sad part is that all the best song are the one's without Lisa on them and the one's that she's one it sounds as though her rhymes are misplaced like on "Over Me" the rap could've been better. I'm glad that the remaining members just decided to let the group be as it is instead of keep going and ruin the TLC legacy. They will always be the biggest selling girl group of all time paving the way for others. The best tracks are "Damaged","So Dumb", "Turntable", and "Good Love".
p.s. Be on the look out for Chilli's solo debut CD on Akon's Konvict Music.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent As Always.......2006-06-30

The loss of a group member is always a significant factor on the music of a group, especially when that loss comes in the form of death rather than simply parting ways. In the case of TLC, it particularly became a factor because Lisa Lopes died while this album was being recorded. Nonetheless, T-Boz and Chilli managed to continue on with their usual grace and finish the album. Many fans believe this album lacks some of the presence they formerly loved about the group because of the shortage of Lisa's witty raps. The group never tries to overcompensate for their loss, nor does it sound as though they attempted to replace her in any way. One of the things I've always loved most about TLC is that they never use guest stars, but instead rely on their own talents. While most people believe this album is lacking compared to their other offerings, it is unfair to say so because obviously there will be fewer of Lisa's raps if she died before she got to record them all.

The album starts out with the "3D Intro", which gives a list of things pertaining to the group that involve the number three, such as "Three trendsetters" or "three personalities". It then goes directly into a short couple of verses. "Quickie" is one of the few songs that has Lisa in it. With T-Boz singing lead, Chilli doing the chorus and Left Eye rapping, the song is one of the most simply entertaining offerings on the album. Lead single "Girl Talk" describes how girls will spread certain information about their men (ie. "Some of y'all been killin' me/thinking you got powers like Austin/But you're more like Mini-Me"). This song also contains one of Lisa's raps, adding another level of sass. The song itself is not that easy to describe, but it becomes clear once you hear it. "Turntable" is one of my favourites on the album. A tribute to Lisa, many have criticized its placement toward the beginning of the album, claiming that it taints the rest by reminding everyone of the element that's missing in most songs. Chilli and T-Boz both sound beautiful in this song, which encourages us to believe that there is always a brighter day no matter how dark things get. This is definitely a hightlight.

I've never particularly liked the Neptunes as producers, as many of the songs they've produced for different artists sound very similar. "In Your Arms Tonight" is one of such songs, where I like nearly everything but the production. The only part I really can't stand is the chorus, as it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the beat. The production in the rest of the song is average, but fits decently with the vocals, so it's manageable. Chilli and T-Boz sound great, and the song itself is nice but it is far from the best they've done. Produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, "Over Me" is a step up from the previous song. Chilli sounds great in the first verse, and it's nice to have her sing lead instead of T-Boz. This is probably one of the standout songs on the album because it showcases everything that we love about TLC: great vocals from both T-Boz and Chilli, sassy lyrics, and a great blend of the vocals and production. Lisa does have a rap in this song, however it sounds somewhat recycled and out of place. Overall, this is definitely one of the better uptempo songs. "Hands Up" describes the girls seeing their man cheating on them at a club, and the initial thoughts that go through their minds. ("I was thinkin' there's no way it could be you/not my baby/he ain't crazy..."). I don't know why, but the whole vibe of this song really appeals to me. Some call it boring, however I think the tone fits perfectly. I also love the way the girls alternate verses because the contrast in vocals keeps interest.

"Damaged" is easily one of my all-time favourite TLC songs. It's so easy to relate to, as it describes a person who is scared to get involved with someone new because they've been hurt in a previous relationship. This is a situation that many people go through, and thus many will find at least a segment of the lyrics that they can relate to. Written by T-Boz and Dallas Austin, it really shows off T-Boz's writing skills. This is definitely both an album and a career highlight. "Dirty Dirty" in contrast is one of the weaker songs. Missy Elliot has always been a hit-and-miss producer, and this song by far falls into the "miss" category. It's not so much that the song is awful, it's just that it really doesn't go anywhere. It seems to be an obligatory club song that has very little lyrical content. With that said, I do like the way the bridge is sung but it is not enough to salvage the song. "So So Dumb" brings them back into highlight territory with a song about telling a male friend he's dumb for cheating on his wife. The instrumentation is beautiful, and sets the tone perfectly. The girls tell him reasons why he shouldn't cheat ("See your wife is beautiful/ the kid is two years old"), and that they'll tell his wife what he's been doing ("I'ma call your wife boy/ And tell her where you've been"). The bridge in particular is beautiful, as they attempt to convey to him the consequences of what he's doing. Another definite highlight.

"Good Love" is not one of those songs that's instantly likeable, but it is the epitome of a grower. It has beautiful vocals, a sweet message, and nice lyrics all of which sound increasingly better with each listen. Many people see this as a fairly sudden switch from the male-bashing anthems TLC used to have (ie. "No Scrubs") however it is a nice change and shows their versatility. "Hey Hey Hey Hey" is the last of three songs to be produced by Darkchild ("Turntable" was also produced by him, although most do not realize it). It straddles the line between good and merely average, depending on the day. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, but there is nothing all that great either. The girls sound good, and the lyrics are decent but there's nothing to scream "standout". "Give It To Me While It's Hot" is an excellent closer simply due to the performances. The lyrics look average on paper, but sound amazing the way they are sung. Lisa's rap here is one of her best on this album ("There's two different dreams/Her thoughts are so pure/His low as the floor"). The production on this one is excellent as well.

    Overall Mark: 4/5

Despite losing one of the group members while the album was in progress, TLC provided another high quality album. Reading through other reviews, I noticed one reviewer mention that some of Lisa's raps here were rehashed from her solo album Supernova. This would explain why her raps in a couple of songs sounded out of place, however one in particular sounded amazing nonetheless (in the final track). Chilli and T-Boz sound amazing as always, and I hope this is not their final album as a group. As much as Lisa's presence will be missed, I would love for more albums to come from the remaining members since all of them have been excellent thus far.

5 out of 5 stars A great bye to Lisa Left Eye Lopes is all this albums about.......2005-09-04

well out of the 13 songs on here Left Eye was only on six of them. This a great album because you can listen to every single song and enjoy it. This a really good album and this album theyre none of them are leading on this album they just harmonize beautifly.

3 out of 5 stars They ended it the best way they possible could!!.......2005-07-20

TLC's 3D is an interesting album..of course it isn't there best. In my opinion FanMail is the best. 3D's has some great tracks on there (i.e. Girl talk, Give It To Me While It's Hot, Godd Lovin, and Turntable). They also have some unfavorable tracks (i.e. Hands Up, Quickie, So Dumb) This album defintely says the end to the biggest selling group of all time in the U.S., and itz quite sad to see them go. The album did go platinum but it wasn't a huge smash like it should have been. (FYI....the only vocals that Left-Eye recorded for this album was "Girl Talk", everything else came from her never before released solo album)

4 out of 5 stars Camiel, the next thing in chill jazz.......2007-04-06

Another artist I have heard on my local smooth jazz station, I am fond of Camiel's neo-Brazilian tune "El Alba". The rest of the tracks have electronic effects to liven up the tunes, but it is Camiel's guitar works that interests me.

3 out of 5 stars Solid CD that comes dangerously close to..........2006-04-06

... 'light jazz'. Camiel's an artist out of the Netherlands and this is his first album from back in 2002. It actually took a bit of time for it to come up in Amazon, but... here it is! I got into some of his music when checking out various compilations, like Cafe Samba and Jazz Lounge. Since I liked both songs, the next step was to check out the artist.

And this isn't a bad release. "Sunset" starts off rather positively. It actually reminded me a bit of Troubleman's cd, only it's far less electronically twinged. That's followed up with "I'm Ready", where you hear him on guitar, adding a little bit of funk to the sound wihtout the tune being overbearing. But... there wasn't a great deal of adventure in the track. "Follow Her" came afterwards and the music was actually pretty nice, although it was admittedly a bit of a cheesy tune with vocals. That can be a dangerous approach but then again, sometimes that's what made the old Italian bossa soundtracks fun for today (like when you hear the woman say... "You're so groovy"). Other tracks that stood out were "Sintra", "El Alba" and "Eighty Eight". The mood of the cd in general is pretty easy going and low-key. Actually... to be honest... this album reminds me of something that more... *mature*... fans would listen to when they're driving home from work/listening to the 'soft-jazz' radio stations that play a healthy dosage of David Sanborn. Nothing wrong with that at all, mind you... [yeah, I did a bad job sugarcoating it, didn't I? (edited as they sensored my review...)] :)

That's it in a nutshell. While this album didn't necessarily grab me, I would still recommend this to anyone that's a fan of light jazz. I think if you're a fan of Praful, you'll be interested in this and if you haven't heard Praful but love this, you might like Praful even more. You may also like a little known guitarist named Lars Bartkuhn. Sometimes I spin his stuff (Treasure Everything), the sound on it may get dated eventually but there's an energy to his music.

5 out of 5 stars ELLIOTT Haworth (Spokane wa).......2006-03-05

I really Really like this cd!! I am a very big fan of chill I think its very interesting. The first song on the cd makes me want to go to a place were you can lay back and relax

5 out of 5 stars FRESH and SMOOTH!!!.......2006-02-23

Got lucky and heard CAMIEL while traveling on the airplane from SanFrancisco to Japan. The song "I'm ready" is great! I couldn't find it for the longest time, because I didn't know who the artist was nor did I know the title of the song. But finally my local Jazz station interviewed him on the air and thus, I found out who it is. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this CD. It's nice and fresh. Not only Jazzy, but also kind of House, and a little Funk as well. If you have any ear for "musical" music, then you will enjoy this jammin CD.

    5 out of 5 stars great album.......2005-11-29

just what i expected from camiel like always laid back jazz or down tempo whatever you wanna call it it's just great chill you up.

5 out of 5 stars Getting to know you, getting to know all about you...........2007-02-11

Have you encountered the "Back To Mine" series? Various artists get to choose the kind of music that they play for their own enjoyment at home. This "3D" triple CD couples that kind of "stuff we like" collection with a glimpse into the roots of Faithless: various projects that the members were involved in before coming together, some of their early demo mixes, and some "friends and family" cuts (including Dido, of course). And all of it is beautifully mixed into a seamless whole. (If you rip this into iTunes, remember to mark it as "gapless".)

Some of Faithless's best work drags you out of your comfort zone, and makes you ecstatic, angry, sad, passionate, or thoughtful. This CD doesn't do any of that; it just makes you feels good. And you know, there's nothing wrong with that....

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Compilation From Faithless.......2007-02-08

Faithless made a beautiful compilation years ago with "Back to Mine." On Renaissance Presents, Faithless bring an equally balanced mix of artists(including themselves) to this CD set.

Disc 1 highlights include Faithless' "Crazy English Summer" (Brothers On High Remix) and I Giant Leap featuring Maxi Jazz of Faithless- "My Culture".

Disc 2 highlights include Re-Touch's version of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill".

Disc 3 has a beautiful song by John Martyn-"Go Down Easy". It wouldn't be out of place on a film soundtrack.

I love listening to all mixes Faithless does, and this one does not disappoint.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Foundations of Faithless.......2007-01-09

The first of the three albums contains all of Faithless' singles not released on the band's other albums (including Woozy, Addictive, & and Maxi Jazz's collaboration My Culture). The 2nd CD seems to contain a set of songs that have more influenced Faithless' club hits (Insomnia, Salva Mea, God is a DJ, etc.) The 3rd CD contains songs which seem to probably have been more of an influence to Maxi Jazz and his knack for lyrical poetry and rap influences. I would say that this is an excellent album for those out there who want to get to know some of Faithless' most influential and foundational music.

5 out of 5 stars Delectable Ear Candy.......2007-01-03

This has to be one of the best compilations ever produced. If your a fan of Faithless you will like this set not only for the Faithless songs, but for the assortment of other goodies as well. Add this to your cart now, you won't be sorry!!

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Faithless Fans.......2006-11-10

This is a 3 CD set featuring the members of Faithless and other artists. The first CD is the Studio collection, it's the band making new tracks and remixing some others as well as their own. There are some great finds on this first CD, by far worth the price. The second is the Club mix featuring mostly other artists club mixes, a bit repetitive after a while but some great remixes on there for the collection. The third is a home collection, I'm guessing music that inspires the band. Not very compelling but some interesting finds as well. Overall a great collection if you're an enthusiastic fan.

5 out of 5 stars Best dang fiddle record in years!.......2007-01-12

Through his obviously rigorous study of his instrument and bluegrass/oldtime music, Casey Driessen has found new musical territory into which to step. 3D is a hip, tasteful, diverse and fun piece of work, which does not sound like your typical fiddle showcase record. This album gives the trad-n-true sounds of bluegrass and oldtime a 21st-century makeover, without losing the spirit of what made these genres great in the first place. It can be enjoyed as background music by those who like to bob their heads to a warm groove, and as an intricate, captivating soundscape by those who take their music listening more seriously. With 3D, Casey Driessen makes it feel cool to be a music geek, and I thank him for that.

4 out of 5 stars ...and 1/2 ... Casey's creativity emits plenty of infectious spunk, raw energy, brash attitude, & excellent musicianship .......2006-06-04

Playing Time - 56:13 -- "3-D" is a most appropriate title for Casey Driessen's solo project that showcases his great depth and comfort with multiple musical dimensions from many genres. Born in Chicago, this young man of 27 is a grad with honors from the Berklee School of Music, and his music tells me that he's a young innovator with plenty of raw energy and a brash attitude. He hasn't gotten so far out there that I'd call him an impudent, irreverent or disrespectful whipper-snapper. Instead, his creativity emits infectious spunk on complete reinventions of some traditional fiddle tunes (Jerusalem Ridge, Sugarfoot Rag, Snowflake Reel, Done Gone, Cheyenne, Sally in the Garden), as well as plenty of his own surreal and evocative compositions. Based on the old-time "Cumberland Gap," a new tune emerges called "Gaptooth." You may not even recognize the heads of some of the original tunes when they're presented as fiddle and drum duets. The results elevate Casey's status as a visionary who communicates a respect for traditional music in his own uniquely personalized manner with syncopated rhythms and improvisation. Multi-tracking his 5-string (or electric) fiddle creates some deliriously fun polyphonic sprees. Does he get a little too far out there and away from the original melodic inspiration at times? OK, maybe just a tad.

There are beautifully melancholic (and melodic) moments in "2 A.M.," and there's soulful loveliness in a piece like "Cliff Dweller's Slide." Driessen sings Sugarfoot Rag, Country Blues and Footsteps So Near. The equalization of his vocals is minimalist, and that adds to the overall mystery. The latter number, originally done as a waltz by Hot Rize, is actually a rawboned conversation between just Casey's fiddles and vocals. For "Country Blues," the instruments were tuned down for a little extra grit and growl. Darrell Scott provides vocal harmonies on two pieces, and like the lead vocals they are fairly understated.

Most of Casey's offerings have percussion (Jamey Haddad) and bass (Viktor Krauss). A few incorporate Darrell Scott's electric guitar, Tim O'Brien's bouzouki, Jerry Douglas' dobro or lap steel, Bela Fleck's banjo, or Jason Lehring's programming. I kind of missed Bryan Sutton's guitar-playing who was a key component of the touring 2005 trio of Driessen, Fleck and Sutton while back. Linus Nagel-Driessen provides vocals on "Good Boy Blues." That 3-minute one-take closer is indubitably for the dogs ... Linus is a Staffordshire Terrier, and he really howls, in bluesy call-and-response style, to Casey's fiddle and looped mandotar. Linus has a great sense of rhythm and almost steals the show, but Linus and the rest of us won't forget that Casey is the master .... and also becoming truly known as one of the big dogs in Nashville. 3 out of 5 stars Flat 3D.......2007-07-19

The Renaissance label has done much to keep the spirit of electronic music alive, giving time-tested DJs a chance to stretch their creative limbs, and allowing lesser-known faces a moment's glimpse of sun. Or glimpse of club-flashing strobe, as the case may be. Whatever you want to call the work produced under this label, it can all be described as great, ground-breaking, description-defying DJ-ing.

    Well, almost all of it.

This three-disc set proposes to introduce you to Satoshi Tomiie, a Japanese DJ who is responsible for the lanky lounge club classic, "Tears." He didn't really get started until he moved to New York and started spinning with the Def Mix crew. Compared to what's out there these days, he's not exactly a Big Name, but if Renaissance is willing to give him his five seconds, he must be worth a shot, right?

    Ummmmmm, not exactly.

Disc One ("Club") is supposed to be a representation of Tomiie's live work. Tomiie takes his time massaging the funk into Spirit Catcher's synth-heavy "Polysquasher" before popping the clutch and driving the whole thing into Berkson's bare-boned "People," a weird digital trash ditty that features a looped vocal that sounds an awful lot like a robotic donkey doing its best impersonation of a robotic chicken. Tomiie's style never gets too flashy, and although his restraint means some of his work glimmers with the beauty of clean-lines and uncluttered melodic mosaics (see the raunchily retro "I Love Your Shoes" and the nimble-toed "Somewhere), it also means that his weaker spots are all that easier to see (you might want to skip the exhausting duo of "Wicked Line" and "Big One," two uninspired and grating messes that bog down the entire heart of the set).

Tomiie went to the "Studio" for the second disc to remix some of the old "favorites" that he's played before (I'll have to take the liner notes at their word for this one). The sound is definitely more accomplished, rounder, and cohesive. He lets you know with his opener -- the simple piano of Loop 7's "The Theme" -- that things are going to be low-key this time around. A lazy lounge mood warms up the start of the disc before picking up some energy in Chab's dangerously sexy "Lover" and the psycho-scape of Cass's "Mind Rewind." The first half is far superior, a well-woven and delicately muted chunk of deep house harmonics. There's some faltering near the last half of the album, especially in Ali and Tomiie's "Love In Traffic" (a song that drones so repetitively that you have to wonder if Tomiie didn't leave the studio to grab a sno cone in the middle of recording). He wisely slots Hybrid's "Higher Than A Skyscraper" as the album's finishing touch, a tight, electro-orchestral soul sweeper that's as deliciously dark as it is inspiring.

Disc Three is called "Home." I made the mistake of listening to it before reading about it. "Home," to me, calls up images of even lankier and less tangible mixes, stuff to make the candles burn brighter and to help the shadows float higher. In fact, the word "Home," here, is meant to imply that we are being given a glimpse into Satoshi's own tastes. These aren't club or dance mixes; this is more like a personalized mix tape of all of the songs and tracks that have inspired Tomiie throughout the years. Hence, you have Sneaker Pimps's "6 Underground" dissolving into an overlong recording of Miles Davis's "Solea." You have the almost unbearably peppy jazz muzak of "Palladium" placed right next to Pastorius's annoyingly anorexic "Portrait of Tracy." Thrown in is the way out-dated "Song of the Siren," MFSB's "Mysteries of the World" (a song that sounds like something a store might play over the loudspeakers while you shop for socks), and James Brown. James Brown!

I actually like some of these songs, in their own right. Of course I'm a fan of James Brown, and I dig on Sneaker Pimnps. But hearing them on the same disc grates. I get the idea that we might want to know more about Tomiie's roots (that's debatable, given his status in the clubbing scene isn't what I would call gelled), but I don't think this is the best way to go about it. An interview and a brief list would be enough. Even if you're going to go to the trouble to slap together such an odd track list, at least take the time to give 'em a brush up with the mixing board. Tomiie IS a DJ after all; but he barely touches these songs, presenting them pretty much as is. "Here," he's saying. "This is the kind of music I listen to when I'm not listening to house."

Well, I bought this set expecting to listen to house, which means that the third disc (mockingly called the "home" record) is not just weird and unnecessary and presumptuous, but it's also kind of a slap in the face. Does ANYONE perusing the Renaissance titles want a disc with an unaltered version of Azymuth's high-concept jazz jingle "Fly Over The Horizon"? I doubt it. But, hey, if you do, you know where to find it now.

The rest of you, well, I wouldn't give up on the fine folks at Renaissance. After all, D's one and two, in spite of their various shortcomings, aren't all that bad. If you're a Renaissance die-hard like myself, you could do a lot worse than this triumvirate of Tomiie's. Still, you could do a whole lot better, too.

3 out of 5 stars Good for 3D series; could see improvement!!.......2006-12-28

Satoshi has released some good stuff for John Digweed to compile and for his album, such as "Up in Flames". I like his compilations, such as the acclaimed Nubreed disc. On the beginning of the Renaissance 3D series, he did a good job. However, he needs to be careful of using tracks that are too familiar. I'll just describe each disc.

Disc 1 starts off with Satoshi's latest club gig reminding me of the 2nd disc of Nic Fanciulli's Renaissance Vol. 1, which got high ratings. It took a couple of listens to really get into it, but love it a lot. One of my favorite tracks on the disc is by Cass & Mangan. I would give it 4/5.

Disc 2 is good, but where Satoshi needs to be careful the most. He needs to be careful about using tracks that are too familiar or not giving enough of the 3D sound where they sound almost the same. In other words, the track by Photek or Satoshi's "Up In Flames" does not sound much different from John Digweed: Los Angelos (Global Underground). It sounds fun to listen to, but maybe a little boring. Overall, 3/5.

The third disc I don't mind, exspecially with hearing a track with James Brown. However, I am not to used to hearing stuff I either heard or that is too popular. It is good though. I don't know how I would rate the third disc.

Overall, It may not be what I call Renaissance, but okay. Satoshi needs to be careful about how he mixes tracks and not using tracks that are too old. I would give 3/5 for Satoshi's performance for the beginning of the Renaissance 3D series.

This is still a fun 3CD set to listen too, but could see improvement for Satoshi's release of Renaissance Master Series 10. It is a situation where whoever listens to the disc either likes it or doesn't.

Listen to samples of this 3CD before buying it. See what you think!!

4 out of 5 stars highs and lows.......2006-09-29

CD's 1 &2 do have some brilliant NEW tracks, although the old tracks mixed in on CD 2 do throw you off a bit. I'm all about respecting "classics" but I only continue to buy mix comp CDs looking for new musical innovations. On a few of the tracks, here, you definitely can find that, which I'd say makes the 3cd comp worth the price, and is the reason for my high score.

As for CD3, it might be cool to hear if you were trippin off some acid. Otherwise it functions nicely as a coaster.

5 out of 5 stars studio mix is the best i've heard in years.......2006-07-15

i'm constantly searching for one of those mixes that stays in your car for months, and you just listen to it over and over with amazement each time at how fabulous it is. with staoshi's studio mix, i've found my latest obsession. his remixes are mind blowing, and i hear tracks like "love in traffic" which i haven't heard in 5 years. he really shows his mad skills on this disc. the other two are okay, but this one blows the others out of the water. if you're like me and are looking for the next hot mix to add to your collection...then buy this immediatly!!!

5 out of 5 stars Club Mix is my fav.......2006-06-15

Interesting concept behind this one...I enjoyed listening to all three discs, but it was the first one, the Club mix, that did it for me. Every time I listen to it, it grows on me more and more. I have never heard an electro mix sound as solid and deep as this one. Every single track on the mix is mint, especially Jim Rivers' "Future" and Martin Eyerer's "Wicked Line". Like I said, with every listen, it gets better and better... If you like good, hypnotic electro and progressive house, then I highly recommend this release. Satoshi is a master producer and programmer.

Jing Chi's 3rd album is their finest work to date as these three musician's musicians reach uncharted musical territories. Master drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, Bass phenom Jimmy Haslip and Guitar legend Robben Ford combine their musical genius for another blistering set fueled by unbelievable ensemble and solo instrumental sections and extended jams that push the outer limits of jazz/blues/fusion.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Well what should I say?.......2006-08-10

Being a musician myself I must admit it's a musician's album but others would like it as well. But if one would ask me if this is original music, my answer would be not at all.
The song Chi Town reminds me very much to a song written by Simon Phillips on one of his solorecords with Andy Timmons on guitar. As I can say of other songs too. F.i. Hidden treasure has many simularities to SP's work.
Over all it's a nice album to hear but if you're looking for something more original then I would suggest "keep on searching".

5 out of 5 stars solid electric jazz to twist your ear.......2005-09-30

Truth be told, this is not an album for everyone. However, being a musician, it has been continuously pleasurable over many listenings. Robben and Vinnie are as good as they come. It's a fabulous recording audio-wise, but it might be tough to dance to...that's not what it's for..This group strikes me as a coming together of three fabulous musicians doing a project that is driven by their own tones and desires, and not commercial popularity. This is very evident by the skeletal nature of many of the tracks on both studio records, and extrapolation over those musical vehicles taken to extremely groovy places. Strongly recommended if you like to listen to great musicians having an obvious blast making strange, beautiful noise....

3 out of 5 stars Decent but not what I expected.......2005-07-18

I lament buying this album on a whim but from listening to the sound samples it sounded pretty good. For the most part, this album is all repetetive guitar solos that just don't do it for me; nothing especially catchy that sticks with you. One minute the band is sonically rising to a guitar squealing climax then 2 seconds later it somehow switches to an out of context ambience. Sure there are some decent songs that don't resemble a "dime a dozen" club jazz band such as "Blues Alley" and "Chi Town." As for the rest of the tunes, they just lack a characteristic that would set them apart from other rock/jazz fusion bands. To me it seems as if the members of Jing Chi were to say one day 'hey lets switch to jazz so we can be cool.' Try Carl Orr's albums "Mean it" and "Absolute Freedom" if you are into great jazz/rock/funk music.

3 out of 5 stars An unusual mix of "superb" and "sub-par".......2005-05-17

Personally, I liked their eponymous first cd better than this one. It was a bit more even, and sounded overall more spacey and inventive to me. Having said that, I also think that there are 4 or 5 songs on "3D" that are better than many of the songs on that first cd. Only problem here is, I really don't like the OTHER half of "3D" very much!

When these guys hit it just right, as they do on "Colonel Panic", "Chi Town", "Hidden Treasure" and "Tangled Up", it's phenomenal! Their unique brand of fusion produces a really cool sound that you don't find anywhere else. And Colaiuta's phenomenal drumming is showcased a lot more on this cd.

On the negative side: Even though I love the bluesy tone of Ford's guitar, I'm just not a classic blues lover; so the lengthy "It's Nobody's Fault But Mine" brings that part of the cd right down for me (and that's partly the fault of BOTH of us I guess!). At other times, they seem to get a bit lost in their jamming. I also don't go for some of the near-metal sounds that creep in a couple times on some of the other tracks.

If these guys could have made just one cd that included most of "Jing Chi" and the best parts of "3D", it could have been a CLASSIC in its genre.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
      Music quality = 7.7/10; Performance = 8.5/10; Production = 8/10; CD length = 9/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.1 ("3-1/2 stars")

      5 out of 5 stars Supergroup Jing Chi's '3D' is another triumph.......2004-07-07

The third release of the blues/jazz/fusion supergroup Jing Chi is an amazing mixture of the afore mentioned music.
'3D' brings together again blues guitarist Robben Ford, bassist Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets and Zappa drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. These three veteran musicians together is just a great musical combination.
Just like Jing Chi's previous releases; their self-titled debut album and their live album, these guys are always putting out an outstanding and distinctive sound.
You can tell that with each CD they release they sound better each time.
This disc in my opinion, is their best to date.
From the opening track 'Colonel Panic' to the final number 'Wires Tangled Up'this disc will blow you away.
There's also a guest vocal by blues great Robert Cray on 'It's Nobody's Fault But Mine'.
This disc has me looking forward for the next one. Check it out!
