Ordinary orchestra.......2007-06-30

I got this CD at a great price, but despite a few gems among the soloists (Goldberg, Studer and especially Morris), it seems I got what I paid for. Recording sounds two-dimensional and suffers throughout from poor intonation and lack of synchornization from the conductor. Feels particularly slow at times; maybe Haitink is trying for a grandiouse effect, but it falls flat. Brass is especially weak and muddy.

The best of Haitink's disappointing Ring.......2005-09-27

You can't make a Ring cycle just because you want to. In the absence of a passalbe, not to say inspiring, Brunnhilde and Siegfried, Haitink's cycle was sunk from the start. But neither of them appear in Das Rheingold, so the singers here are good enough, and in James Morris we have the best Wotan of his generation. I would rate this set higher except that the orchestra is no great shakes and Haitink, then a newbie to Wagner conducting, lapses back into his duller mode of straightforward, unimaginative leadership. All in all, this Rheingold is about equal to Levine's contemporaneous one on DG, which is marred by eccentrically slow tempi.

Overlooked gem.......2005-06-10

This recording contains some awfully good singing and conducting. The sound is incredible. The anvil stroke, while less clanged than Solti, has a wonderful roll out afterward. James Morris is every bit as good here as for Levine, and the accompanying singers are every bit as strong as the Wotan. Pity the rest of the cycle doesn't stand up to such close scrutiny. This (and most of Siegfried) are the best on record. Peter Haage is a touching Mime here, and Theo Adam (once a Wotan) is a volatile Alberich. Highly recommended.

I love this CD. Laurel Masse has a remarkable voice which she uses with great expertise on this collection of beautifully performed and arranged songs. Listening to this collection is a very special experience you won't want to miss.

A Dignified and Welcome Contribution to Spiritual Music!.......2001-10-22

Those of us who adore spiritual albums are very lucky that one of the founding members of the Manhattan Transfer has decided to turn her talents to a cause that interests us so!

In this album, Laurel Masse baptizes an old music hall with her GORGEOUS voice and spiritual impromptu songs that spill right from her beating heart.

Some of my favorite pieces on the album were "Radiant Flame of Gold", a very powerful safety/comfort chant embracing either "Saint Brigit" or "the Goddess, Brigit" depending on your religion. I also enjoyed "The Mountainy Singer" which is just a lively, spirited, catchy tune. And her improvisational pieces are absolutely divine.

I'm very into voices, and this is a STRONGLY voice-centered album, so let me try to describe her voice in case it's helpful to anyone. Her singing style is NOT opera on most pieces. It's a Streisand-like voice, very clear and powerful with only light vibrato. It'll draw you in on the very first song and make you wish you could sing like that!

I'm glad she made this album and I would recommend it to others who like very dignified spiritual music.

This CD is truly amazing. What a gift! Laurel Masse's willingness to expand her musical horizons has brought forth an astoundingly varied and beautiful piece of work. From the opening notes of the Quaker hymn "How Can I Keep From Singing?" to the closing track, "Lone Wild Bird/MacIntosh's Lament," this ia multi-layered, richly hued CD filled with intensity and heart. The range of selections alone defies classification, and the beauty with which she infuses these songs is thrilling. This is not "background music"--like all true art, "Feather and Bone" challenges your senses...and, eventually, opens your heart and mind. Thank you, Laurel, for following your own sacred heart as an artist, and taking your audience along on the journey.

Great compilation.......2004-12-19

This is a great compilation of club/dance/electronica songs of the past few years. A lot better than a lot of the recycled garbage that appears on the Greatest Ibiza Dance Hits Albums and the ilk. The opening track Rapture by Iio is one of my favorite clubbing songs of all time. The first and second CD's are my favorites, while the third has a few good tracks, but mostly sounds the same. Also featured are Modjo "Lady Hear Me Tonight", another great single, Madison Avenue "Don't Call Me Baby", "The Launch", "Zombie Nation", definitely a must have if you are a big dance/club music fan. Just pop the CD in and you have your own personal club playlist ready to go.

Quirky, funny, for animal lovers.......2002-12-02

When I saw this item while browsing on Amazon, I thought the idea of this collection was pretty funny and just had to buy it.

I am happy to report that I love this CD! The music is soft and beautiful, much like the musak that one hears in an elevator or as background music in stores. Actually it would make great music to play in stores during the holiday timesýespecially in stores catering to animals, pet stores, nature stores, or health food stores.

It seems to me that sometimes the animalýs sound was programmed into a keyboard and then the keyboard is played like a piano. These parts donýt sound at all like animals, they sound like beautiful music. Other times you can hear the call of the whales or dolphins, or even a dog barking sound or what seems to be a parrot talking voice and it is obvious that what we are listening to is the sound of animals.

This is fun to listen to as background music when you want to listen to holiday tunes but are sick of the same old tracks with vocals, and want something quirky with a sense of humor rather than a classical piece. The music is calming, serene and beautiful. It is not obnoxious or set to a fast beat.

My children love this as do I. Animal lovers, naturalists, or those with a good sense of humor will really enjoy this collection!

A parrot singing lead on "Deck the Halls"? Dolphins on keyboards? Bats on bells? Chimps doing a pizzicato cello line? All this and much more are captured on this extraordinary collaboration by Bernie Krause, who recorded the animal sounds from around the world and composer/pianist Philip Aaberg, who added some sampled animal sounds, arranged the Christmas music, and played the sampled sounds on keyboard. Many of the animal "voices" are easy to recognize, but others sound like actual instruments. Both novel and musically sound, this is a fascinating accomplishment on many levels. Many "novelty" recordings wear thin after listening to them a few times, but Aaberg did an excellent job with the arrangements, and I think people would really enjoy this album if they didn't know that ALL of the sounds are animals rather than more traditional instruments. "Silent Night", "Sheep May Safely Graze" and "Shepherd's Rocking Carol" are gorgeous, and would fit into many traditional Christmas recordings. "Deck the Halls" and "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" are funny, truly making a "joyful noise". "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" is a grand finale , with fourteen different animals and birds extending their greetings. This is Christmas album for those who like their holiday music different from Johnny Mathis and the usual array of pop stars, young and old, singing the same old tunes. Great stuff!

The holiday music on this disk, composed entirely from animal sounds, seems "gimmicky" and to be honest that is what attracted me to it, because I love that stuff! But I've got my headphones on at work, it's December - I'm revving up for the holidays - and I'm struck by the wonderful emotions it's evoking for me! First, the holiday melodies are very witty and creatively composed and are a joy to hum along with - secondly, the true artistry of the production and subtle use of amazingly clear animal voices is astounding! It takes me back to all of my walks through the woods (alas, I've never heard a monkey in the jungle, but I bet it would sound like it is heard here) or hanging out by the lake listening to the birds... I gave this disk 5 stars because I encourage you to try it -- I know you'll love it! I'd like to thank Phil and Bernie for composing this great disk! Happy holidays . (P.S. My favorite track is #6: Shepherd's Rocking Carol... wow!)

You might think this is too cheesy-christmas stuff but..........1999-12-02

PUT YOUR HEADPHONES ON AND LISTEN TO THIS THING! it's too cool, there are all kinds of animals mixed in there somewhere and making all kinda music. sometimes just animal noise. And the choice of Christmas music is great, some regular oldies with new twists and some lesser known sweet songs.

Melodic chorus of animal friends.......1999-11-12

This collection is amazing - every single sound on it is made by an animal! I am completely awed that someone could take whale songs, sheep bleats, bird trilling, and other assorted sounds and create recognizable Christmas carols. I think this one's great for the kids - there is the occasional dog bark that amuses - but it's oddly soothing at the same time. Definitely different, strangely comforting and very sweet music.
