Peppered With Spastic Magic

Editorial Reviews

DJ Magazine
"...His uncompromising dub/hard house/techno sets and club nights inspired a legion of DJs and producers."

Product Description
The Two Lone Swordsmen (Andrew Weatherall & Keith Tenniswood) started life during downtime at the Sabres of Paradise studio and rapidly turned into an official fighting force with their move to a luxurious HQ/studio above a dry cleaners in Chiswick. It was here that Swordsmen's spasm-driven machine funk, fueled by fumes from the establishment below, began to really take shape, culminating in the release of 'Stay Down' on Warp.

Shortly after 'Stay Down' the Swordsmen relocated to East London to feed on the sex-and-money atmosphere of the square mile. The Rotters Golf Club studio has seen the bulk of Weatherall/Tenniswood productions and is currently vibrating to the sound of a new Swordsmen album in the making. From estate to Golf Club, the Two Lone Swordsmen have peppered spastic magic over Spiritualized, Death In Vegas, Paul Weller, Beth Orton, Primal Scream, Stereo MCs, Texas, Luke Slater and many more - more than was realized, in fact, until a session in the Golf Club vaults. Blowing the dust off of some old chestnuts whilst getting a wedding reception together, Mr. Weatherall began to put aside an ever-growing pile of Swordsmen remix vinyl. Over the following days, the tracks were compiled onto disc, and after stringent road-testing, the first of these compilations is finally ready for release...

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps not knowing the originals helps?.......2004-09-02

This is an album that contains lots of material I wouldn't normally listen to, being more of an Autechre, Oval, Pole devotee. However, it grows on me at each listen and the only reason that I haven't give it a 5 is that the first reviewer did, and I think it really only deserves 4 & 1/2.

There's not a dud track on this album and it's hard to pick standouts. "Good Souls" starts the album off well and with "Mescal", the quirky little gem to follow, makes for an aural taste-bud enlivening entree. "Visions", "System" and "Stuka" give body to the main course, as do the rather warped duo "Put Your Arms Around Me" and "Angels Go Bald Too". All this warmly finished off by the curious little glitch/dub "Untitled 3", a fitting dessert to end a fine meal.

A mixture of styles that makes a surprisingly well rounded whole. Good album to chill out to on a lazy day at home (a cat on the lap helps!).

5 out of 5 stars 2 cool for school.......2004-06-07

Having always been a follower of the Swordsmen's work i was intrigued to see this little nugget of remixes on the shelves. I was firstly attracted by the artwork and surprised and a little suspicious to see it was not a Warp release. Indeed i later found out that 'Rotters Golf Club' is Andrew Weatherall's own label. As you know he is a total legend in his own right which gave this label clout.

Anyhow on to the album; I was intrigued to see what TLS would make of remixing these commercial tracks such as Texas and Starsailor and quite frankly they are far more enjoyable than the original! As well as this there are a lot of dope tracks remixed on there like 'Visions' by Slam, 'All Exhale' by Luke Slater; 'Nin Com Pop' by Lali Puna and 'Stuka' by Primal Scream. As in usual TLS stylee, this is a sophisticated album pulsating minimal electro with stripped down beats, taking apart each track and extracting and manipulating the best sounds from each track, so much so in many cases, it is as far away from the original as can be. This remix album surpassed all expectation and the varied remixes make it an enjoyable listen, especially 4am last Sunday morning when me and my pals were chilling in the lounge....
