All aboard the Lagwagon!.......2003-06-14
Let's Talk About Great MUSIC.......2003-03-05
** A Brief History **
Before I start to review the CD I will first talk a little bit about Lagwagon and how they got to this record (well kind of any way!). The earliest recordings of Lagwagon are way back in 1990 so I can only assume that they formed some time before that in the late eighties. Sinse then they have released 5 albums (not including this), which are (in date order) Duh, Trashed, Hoss, Double Pladinum and Let's Talk About Feelings. The best albums in my view are Trashed and Let's Talk About Feelings, however they are all excellent CDs. Lagwagon, since releasing their first album have grown to become one of the most popular bands on the Fat Wreck Chords label and regularly feature in their sampler record series, Fat Music.
** Lets Talk About Leftovers **
1. A Feedbag of Truckstop Poetry
2. Narrow Straights
3. Burn that Bridge When We Get to It
4. Losing Everyone
5. Jimmy Johnson
6. Eat Your Words
7. Want
These first seven songs are new, well mostly songs 1, 6 and 7 can be found on the 7' A Feedbag of Truckstop Poetry. Number 7 'Want' is a song by Jawbreaker, one of Lagwagon's favourite bands.
8. Bring on the Dancing Horses
9. Randal Gets Drunk
Number 8 'Bring on the Dancing Horses' is a song by Echo and the Bunnymen, they chose to cover this song, apart from liking the band, because they like it when animals dance! Number 9 'Randal Gers Drunk' is on the Fat release Short Music for Short People. Both these songs were recorded at the same time as the album Let's Talk About Feelings.
10. Raise A Family
11. Restrain
12. No One Like You
13. Freedom of Choice
14. Brodeo
All of these songs were recorded at the same time as the Double Pladinum album, they appologise for not including them as they feel the record was a little short (around 25 mins!). Apparently number 14 'Brodeo' is slightly country, but I can't see it! Number 14 'Raise A Family' is also available on the Fat release Physical Fatness, part of their sampler series.
15. Drive By
16. Wind in Your Sail
17. Over the Hill
18. Defeat You
19. Laymens Terms
All of these songs were recorded at the same time as the Hoss album. Number 19 'Laymens Terms' is also available on the Fat release Survival of the Fattest, part of their sampler series.
20. Jazzy Jeff
21. The Champ
Both these songs were left off the Trashed album, number 20 'Jazzy Jeff' because the song was never finised and number 21 'The Champ' because it was seen as too metal (not wanting to disappoint their punk fans!).
22. Demented Roumours
This was recorded with the Duh album and was left off the album, probably again because it was too metal.
23. Truth and Justice
24. No Conviction
25. Jaded Ways
These songs formed Lagwagon's first demo. At the end of song 25 'Jaded Ways' there is a hidden track, well not that hidden, but it is about 20 minutes of one of their live shows, which are fantastic by the way, from Japan.
** The Cover/Inlay **
The cover cleverly combines the art from the covers off all of their previous albums and throughout the inlay apart form providing a history of Lagwagon, band member changes there are photos throughout tracking how the band has changed.
** My Thoughts **
This album is a must for any Lagwagon fan, there are some out there, and is a good introduction for people who want to listen to a broad range of their songs before purchasing a particular album.
12 Years of lagwagon on one disc.......2003-01-08
Those are Duh, Trashed, Hoss, Double Plaidinum and Feelings.
This disc has all of previous cd's in it.
The first 7 songs are new songs, and in style of Feelings/DP
The metal-like songs on the back of the record were not yet presented on other lagwagon albums, they sound good, only if you like metal-influenced punk.
All the songs inbetween are av. lagwagon songs, but still they are good, they represent the progress lagwagon made on their previous 5albums. from duh to feelings, all's included on this collection.
I can really recommend this to you guys and girls out there!

Forced, over-intelligent pointless music.......2005-03-12
The overall feeling is: forced. Vai is technically skilled and surely very musical ear. But when it comes to creativity.. he fails short. Its obvius how he, through the songs, with all his strength and skilles, try to be another Frank Zappa. Unfortunately the compositions are walking on stiff legs and sounds way to overworked and pointless at the same time, not fluent and natural like Zappas.
Tiresome attempts to be "weird" like "so happy" and "little pieces of seewead" stands beside forgottable instrumentals like "Bledsoe blud" and "San sebastian". !"#¤ Yourself was really funny the first 20 times i heard it now I dont like it anymore.
Is "details at 10" supposed to be funny? It aint.
The most speaking song is the last one, Cronic insomnia: You almost hear Vai screaming out his frustration he can never be a true genius. Steve Vai is to Zappa on "Flexable" what Salieri is to Mozart in "Amadeus"!
(A MORE DETAILED REVIEW).......2001-12-05
when they hear it, and have the sort of attitude like, " (I) don't like it, so that means it (*&%#)". Well, whatever. I'm not gonna go off like other people, telling you that you SHOULD like this record. I mean, it's perfectly alright if don't you dig this, but it ISN'T alright if you start badmouthing the quality and musical merit of it. The material on this album is actually really good, and really CREATIVE. The reason i would more respect for than say, "Alien Love Secrets", is that it showcases Mr. Vai's talents in more areas than just on the guitar (although some of the more inspired guitar i have ever heard from shows up on a couple of tracks on this disc). Perhaps a track-by-track overview of the album would help give a better impression of what one can expect to hear:
1.#$%@ Yourself - funky, and freakin' hilarious. This is one of the album's vocal-led tracks, containing some very, very humourous lyrics. Personally, this is one of my least favourates on the album, because while the lyrics WILL have you on the ground in hysterics, the words just aren't backed up by all that great of music. But, if you hang on till the end, theres quite a nice extended gtr. solo that should fulfill those wanting to hear some grade A shredding. This track is the reason for the "explicit lyrics" labeling.
2. So Happy - This one also falls under the freakin' hilarious category. Here's roughly the story of what this track is all about: basically, Steve got this chick to go off on an improvised rant about how happy she is, and then transcribed the pitch of her voice and doubled it on guitar. This is the kind of thing that doesn't lend itself very well to repeated listening, but each time you listen, and suddenly hear that guitar come in, you can't help but marvel at how cool of an idea it was.
3. Bledsoe Bluvd. - instrumental. No, not a guitar instrumental, but this is a rather nice track, showcasing Steve's talents as an all around composer.
4.Natural Born Boy - Instrumental. Yes, a guitar instrumental, containing one of the coolest riffs ever. I KNOW you'll like at LEAST this one.
5.Details At 10 - a vocal-led track that would probably also fall under the freakin' hilarious category. You'll like it.
6. Massacre - Another one of the coolest riffs ever, over which Vai messes around with what sounds like a Digetec Whammy pedal. Underlined by technoy drum machine beat (don't let throw you off).
7. Burnin' Down the Mountain - acoustic instrumental. Apperently this was just improvised while sitting on the roof of the studio with a few other people who were there for the album sessions. It's got kind of a nice little melody, but it's a very personal track, for Steve, and the others who made it; it really should've been left off the album.
8. Little Pieces of Seaweed - Holy *&%#! Where to start... I personally love this track, cuz i'm just really into the weird and quirky, but it's understandable if you aren't able to fully understand this; it IS quite a bit to take in at once. Everyone HAS to hear this track at least ONCE. Thats all i'll say.
9. San Sebastian - Elevator music-y instrumental that again, showcases his Zappa-like compositional talents.
10. Beast of Love - vocal track. Rather mundane I think. it doesn't really go anywhere.
11. You Didn't Break It - cheesy pop song ( like the "Boy/Girl Song" on Flex-Able). You won't be blown away by anything, but it IS a pretty catchy tune.
12. The X-Equilibrium Dance - Instrumental that sorta goes all over the place. Doesn't really have what one would call a melody. Still kind of an interesting track, though.
13. Chronic Insomnia - Not a track your going to listen to more than once, it's just a recording of Steve doing a bunch crazy whammy bar dives that was put into reverse. Kinda cool to see what sounds it's possible to make on a guitar, but there isn't any kind of MELODY here for you to keep coming back to.
Whew! Now that you have read THAT, i'm sure you'll have a better idea of whether this record is right for YOU or not.
Thanks,
the Duke of Dunbar

Message for Vai:
I am still waiting to see some CLASSIC Vai guitar on some form of CD compillation. Here's what I'm talking about:
- 1 or 2 songs from the group WESTERN VACATION, featuring Vai on guitar.
- Parts, or the whole of the group ALCATRAZZ (there is some INCREDIBLE guitar work on this album!)
- Amazing Grace, from the soundtrack "Dudes"
- All of the VAI parts from the movie CROSSROADS.
- Some LIVE highlites from the David Lee Roth period. You know, at least 3 or 4 great performances from Vai when he was touring with Roth.
- That's it.
Live on!
Good stuff!
Respectfully,
-Jeff K.
P.S. If Kenny Stewart is reading this: Peace, bro. You are the best :)

These Three Can Do No Wrong........2004-10-27
Now, rather than repeat what they did with "JTA" by re-releasing the album with an extra disc with bonus material, UD decided to release a compilation album of "Leftovers" from "JTA" and "TTS". And on its own, the album is amazing, continuing the brilliance they always exude.
"Almond Rocha"--Ugly Duckling fans pay attention, because never has there been a better UD song. I'm sure anyone who listens to this album will notice this song immediately like I did, if not what the hell is wrong with you? Einstein is just pure genius when it comes to beats. This song will serve as an exclamatory example to that statement. The song also features a flute that's very Beastie Boys, which is replaced by a violin during the chorus. It evokes head bobbing like no other UD song. And you never really can complain about Andy and Dustin's rhymes, can you? Well, definitely not on this song. "Now you could be a housewife or a bachelorette/ or a little baby girl in a bassinette/ Maybe you're an underprivileged foster kid/ or a rich kid, eating with a lobster bib/ we'll get your body moving till your feet start throbbing/ and have your noggin bobbin' like your ridin' in a toboggan." That exert serves perfectly as an example to their style of rhyming: fun, fluid, and vivid rhyming (with the occasionally storytelling). "Alligator Suflet", a Dizzy Dustin song with Andy only in the chorus, has a Cut Chemist sounding beat. It also features the best chorus of the album: "I'm on my way (I'm on my way)/ So, alligator catch me on a later day (a later day)/ this way... to the sound of the UD/ guaranteed to cure your mood swings/ the price people pay for that old suflet." It's another new favorite UD song for me. I'm not sure how, but each new version of "A Little Samba" they release is better than the former. Although "Another Samba" was lyrically the opposite of what they are saying on "A Little Samba", the new version "A Little Samba (The Forbidden Mix)" is the newest version. A direct remix of the original, and essentially the best version yet. It samples music from some salsa dance number. I, being ignorant to salsa dance music, cannot identify exactly which one, but it is familiar music nonetheless. Sporting another brilliant Einstein beat, this is another great song. "Pick Up Lines 2" is really good, but I prefer the original mainly due to it having a bumpier beat than this version. It's got a few adjusted lyrics and the same chorus (which I feel should have been changed to better match the new production). "Elevator Music", like the song entails, features music you would likely hear playing in an elevator. But wait, it's actually a good song; somehow they seem to make it work. It sounds closer to "Fresh Mode" than anything else they've done since... well, "Fresh Mode". I was skeptical to feeling that I would like "Something's Going Down Tonight" due to it featuring Grand Puba. Nothing against Grand Puba (I'm not all too familiar with him), but I don't like UD featuring artists on their songs. I was wrong to question before listening, because it's a really good song, and Grand Puba is a pretty nice addition to the track. Einstein has some really nice cutting on this track. While the songs I mentioned I prefer, everything else on this release is good as well. Understand there is no bad song on here. This is now my second favorite UD release, after only "Journey To Anywhere (w/ Bonus Disc)".
If you're a fan of Ugly Duckling, "Fresh Mode" to "Taste The Secret", you absolutely cannot go wrong here. This release beckons to be bought, so ****ing buy it now!!!

Are you tired of Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys cranking out nauseating bubble gum to America's airwaves? Getting a little peeved by angry alternative music that makes you want to kick the nearest innocent bystander? What you need is some fresh, original music, where lyrics are actually interesting and the sound is anything but commercialized.
Delivering just what you may need is a fun, independent band straight out of Chicago who call themselves the Leftovers.
The Leftovers music is best described as rock complimented by a definate country influence to form a rare treat in music. Their new CD, 57 to Nowhere, was released on April 19, 2001 with 10 original songs by the band that range from a good dose of honkey tonk to pure rock and roll. From the lead track, Rodeo Bullfighter to the accoustic melody of Causing Cofusion completing the album, each song is cleaver both musically and lyrically. The full length CD is peppered with all of the good things in life worth singing about--love, women and plenty of booze.
The Leftovers consist of four Chicago natives. Frontman Tim Moran does most of the vocal work as well as some guitar playing. He is joined by Rodney Allott, bass player who lends a deep, resonating voice not only to back up but also adds a nice change by singing lead on the song Light In Charleston. Additional vocals along with the responsibility of lead guitar go to Mark Petranek, whom has been with the band for a year now, while Tom Weselak takes care of the drums.
Although the Leftovers consider Chicago home, the band relocated for two years to the Tempe, Arizona music scene whick has helped fuel the bands love and direct influence in music flavored with southwestern style from bands like the now defunct Refreshments and the current Phoneix area favorites, The Peacemakers.
Having returned from the desert, The Leftovers are currently playing around Chicagoland and promoting their new album. CD's are available through their web site at www.chicagoleftovers.com or at shows. For more information on future gigs, log onto the bands website and click on shows.
The Leftovers, as with many bands, are best heard live where the charisma of the band really comes through. They combine a playlist consisting of their original tunes as well as covers ranging from Steve Earle, the Refreshments and Tim McGraw to Tom Petty, Stroke 9 and even a little bit of Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive if Moran has an Irish Car Bomb or too much tequila before the end of the night.
So leave your home without the fear of being consumed by what big wig music moguels think you should enjoy and discover one of the many great local independent bands. Bring your friends, forget Britney Spears and get ready to tap your toes and do some shots of tequila along with The Leftovers.

Festus, Missouri's Bottle Rockets have been making some of the best Creedence/Mellencamp-style rock in America (where else?) since their 1993 debut. This EP, their fourth record, collects tunes that didn't make it on its predecessor, 24 Hours a Day. It's a testament to frontman and main songwriter Brian Henneman's talent that the standouts--including "Get Down River," a flood victim's quiet plea; the bluesy blast "If Walls Could Talk"; and "Financing His Romance," the tale of a guy in love with a bar owner's waitress girlfriend--are about as good as anything they've released in the past. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
