Reunited at last, Creamfields brings Paul Oakenfold back to Cream's bosom. As always, Oakie doesn't disappoint, raiding his extensive vinyl collection to bring us stunning mixes of progressive and tech house with chilled melodic trance and breaks. In the mix are joints from John '00' Fleming, Tilt, Quivver, Young Parisians, and even U2. The tracklist has been selected and mixed by Oakenfold and includes exclusive cuts and mixes. This is the only Paul Oakenfold mix album that's available in 2004. It doesn't get any more essential. --Paul Eisinger

Album Description

Internationally renowned DJ/Producer/Remixer and all around modern music catalyst Paul Oakenfold returns with a melodic trance monster of an album on "Creamfileds." Throughout his storied career, two releases have stood out as the quintessential Oakenfold mix albums: 1998's "Tranceport" and the recently certified Gold 2002 release, "Perfecto Presents Another World." Both of these releases embodied the uplifting, grandiose trance vibe that helped firmly establish electronic music in the global mindset. With "Creamfields," Oakenfold revisits the vibe of these timeless mix albums, yet in classic Oakey style, he does it with a whole new bag of tricks for 2004

Oakenfold takes the role of the DJ one step further on "Creamfields." The album features original Oakenfold re-edits of every track plus new remixes produced exclusively for this release, including the exclusive Oakenfold 2004 remix of U2's smash "Beautiful Day", an exclusive remix of Oakenfold's collaboration with Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell, "Time Of Your Life", as well as club anthems from Mauro Picotto, Nubreed, and D:Fuse. With "Creamfields", Oakenfold delivers a full two CD's of the classic uplifting melodic trance sound that he has become famous for, and the re-edits and remixes bring the continuity of the album to a whole new plateau. "Creamfields" is the album that Oakenfold fans have been waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars M-Azing.......2007-03-20

This truly is an amazing compilation. OCEAN OF LOVE; possibly my favorite trance song ever. It really moves me. I personally think disc two is the best. They are both really great though

4 out of 5 stars A respectable "comeback", of sorts, for Oakenfold.......2006-12-27

I'll be honest, classically, I have not been the most devoted Paul Oakenfold fanatic out there. I only own this, Tranceport, Global Underground 007: New York and A Voyage Into Trance, but I have heard enough of both his live and studio mixes to know where I'm coming from with this release.

I am really not enthralled by the Perfecto label's output, either. I think Oakenfold has been sliding down the commercial slope, getting ever-so-perilously close to the edge before managing to climb his way back. Only to repeat the process. Yet, to his credit, he has been releasing progressivly less cheesy mixes lately, and I think Creamfields is the cream of the most recent crop for him. It's got style, with a surprisingly good track progression and better-than-average mixing. It gives a new impression to his name which used to represent the juggernaut of the trance subculture to me. That was a long time ago, of course.

I like both discs pretty much equally. At times, I think the beats, some laced with vocals, could be comparable to GU007:New York's first disc, although that may be giving Creamfields a bit too much credit. Regardless of what artist or other mix I could compare this one to, it's decent and worth picking up as it finds a cozy place in my harder trance rotations along with Thrillseekers, Armin, Tiesto and Solarstone. I can't listen to Tranceport anymore, and AViT was so dark, brooding and monotonous that I've given up on it entirely.

I gave this mix 4 stars primarily because there are too many instances where Oakenfold throws in a transition, shifts the bpm or tosses in a funky little rhythm that I felt should have continued for much longer to act more as frontrunners than as transitional sound bytes between one 4/4 beat to the next.

All-in-all, however, if you find yourself just beginning to get into the genre, or have already cemented your place within it and have lost faith in Oakenfold's ability to appeal to the real fans of dance music, give this album a try. It might be the catalyst needed to convert you back to the dance floor; this album cries, "Join Us". Not an unappealing proposition, all things considered.

5 out of 5 stars As if you needed this review to tell you it's good........2006-07-13

With the number of people talking about how great this CD is, I'm kind of wasting my time writing this, but of all his CDs that I own, this is definately my favorite and is the one I listen to the most.
Paul Oakenfold has gotten somewhat popular lately with a more commercial sound and I read that his older stuff was different. This double CD is creative, it moves you, it's what deep trance is supposed to be. Tranceport is very good too. If you like this album I would recommend you check out In Trance We Trust,Special Collectors Edition by DJ Cor Fijneman, Universal Religion Live by Armin Van Buuren and some of the In Search of Sunrise series by DJ Tiesto. These few CDs are my favorite Trance CDs and I have alot.

5 out of 5 stars A great trance album!.......2006-06-08

This a great trance album, I enjoy listening to it much more the Tiesto "Waiting for sunrise LA" or Armin "State of Trance 2006"

5 out of 5 stars In the infamous intro of James Lavelle: What's it like... to be back.......2006-05-14

To be candid with you I have neither the patience nor the time to explain why this album is good but on the other hand typing the block letters "GET IT" isn't exactly helpful either. If you are a trance lover this is what tranceport may possibly sound like if it is mixed today but if the name oakie does not ring a bell to you and the phrase purple by sasha and the light are just funny words you are on the wrong web page.

Stand out tracks: there are none in all honesty. This is Oakie's most even album to date.
Cons and downsides: The cd is live so sound quality is compromised.

Bottom line: Get it. Not revolutionary but awe inspiring in a subtle sort of way.

Glad to have you back Oakie.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD / DJ Ever.......2007-03-26

CD #1 = Perfect
CD #2 = Really good

Ferry Corsten rocks, no set of cd's compare to this and ive heard alot of trance/techno.

4 out of 5 stars not what i expected, but not dissapointed.......2007-01-04

I got into Ferry with LEF and a few other samples with thumping tracks like "fire" and "punk." this first cd is actually less of a dance/trance cd and feels more electro. it is very well done though. very satisfying and worth your time. i still feel some of the tracks were not to my taste, however this is my opinion. the second cd really takes off into territory i am familiar with. its all about the volume here buddy!! cd 1, 4 stars, cd 2, 5 stars.. so somewhere inbetween here..

5 out of 5 stars CD1 horrible, CD2 Unbelievable.......2006-10-09

CD1 is flat out horrible... sorry Ferry, its soo 70-s retro robot wussy house music.

CD2 on the other hand is Undescribably amazing. I dont even see what Ferry was thinking, CD1 is not even his style. CD2 is what he became famous for, almost every song is the top of the topest of complex melodic non cheezy Progressive Trance. He should not have included CD 1. Big mistake.

Regardless, since CD2 is so great, 5 stars is a must.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-04-25

You know, i have been into trance for a while now. I have listened to a lot of different DJs and come to expect certain things from each one. While im not saying that this is a bad album or anything, its definately not what i have come to expect from Ferry Corsten. This first disc kinda sounds like to Mack trucks full of samples collided head on. When i was expecting decent trance music, all disc one delivered was a "by the book" techno experience. Its incredibly mellow (alittle too much for this reviewers taste), and doesnt really pick up until the last few tracks. Not too bad of a disc overall, just not what i saw coming. Disc 2 delivers alittle bit more on the trance end, quenching my thirst for Ferry Corsten's trance talent. Maybe its because the Ferry Corsten i have grown to love is the one i hear mainly in his "trance energy" live sets, but this album is not even close to what i was expecting.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome, as usual from F!.......2006-03-18

Great compilation here.
Ferry is truly number 1 and this dual-disc shows why.
1st CD awesome funky electro house, which has recently become a new favorite of mine. 2nd CD brings out some lesser played trance tracks. Ferry masters the flow of these sets and takes you on a journey like only he can!
I'm only droppin 4 stars on this because there's some tracks I feel couldve been swapped for some better ones.
Keep a lookout for his L.E.F. artist CD coming out soon!
Gonna knock your socks off!
Take care, and F for life!

        5 out of 5 stars Oakey's entire live set?.......2001-05-15

I'm trying to find Oakey's entire uncut live set from Creamfields 2000. I know this has parts, is complete live set available? This is a great CD for anyone who live good DJ's such as Oakenfold in a live atmosphere.

        4 out of 5 stars Wish I was there..........2000-09-15

Cream Records is really starting to come into their own here; releasing 7 compilations in a year. That's a lot, though it's a fraction of what Ministry of Sound churns out for the clubbers, and thank God for that. Cream compilations tend to have less tracks, giving each tune a bit more time. They've also come to feature more progressive tunes rather than the trance bangers of the past, and this is no accident. 2000 was the year of truly progressive sessions.

For those of you who don't know, "Creamfields" is a rave held by Liverpool superclub Cream every year in August since 1998. Think of it as an dance music Woodstock. Every DJ who's anybody at all from Paul Oakenfold to John Kelly to Danny Rampling is there. This year every dance act from Basement Jaxx to Death in Vegas to Spiller was there. It's quite an event...I think there's like four-five stages. This compilation celebrates the occasion. How does it hold up?

Beginning with the anthem of the summer, Spiller's "Groovejet," one would think that this mix is too disco-bouncy. That vibe continues with South Street Player's "Who Keeps Changing Your Mind" which has the be one of the best garage tunes in recent memory. But as this first disc progresses it gets darker and deeper. Morel's "True" (also on John Digweed's "Bedrock" compilation), the Futureshock Remix of Underworld's "Cowgirl" both are dark stormers in their own right. Disc two gets underway with the Skip Raider's Remix of Midfield's "Reach Out" and gives us a more trancey vibe with tunes like Bedrock's "Voices," and SuReal's "You Take My Breath Away."

All in all a good compilation. Anyone interested in clubbing, Cream, or UK house/trance music in general should pick it up.
