5 out of 5 stars Great All Around.......2007-02-03

I was a little careful with this CD, as the previous reviews are a little scetchy and I have other works from Michael Murray which are not anything exciting. However, I was enthralled by both the sound quality and the performance. Michael Murray really plays out the pieces! The organ sounded not too far off what I heard in person at a concert I attended at Methuen last year.
The only curiosity of the recording is the fact that it is so short and that the pieces are arranged with the three large pieces, then the two Chorales. Usually, recording engineers will stick the softer pieces in the middle to give contrast to the recording and to not make the listeners ears tired. They also did not include the beautiful Fugue to the Toccata, which was a little disappointing.
All in all, considering the price of a used copy ($2-3), it is well worth it. The music and sound are great, and they even included decent liner notes, which is more than I can say for many organ CD's.

3 out of 5 stars hall sound, what hall sound?.......2005-07-31

Just a note for audiophiles - this early recording is one of those where the organ is in stereo, but the reverb/overhang is in mono. There might have been coincident mikes to explain this - there is left and right organ sound, but virtually no space. You either like this technique or you don't, but if you don't it is really annoying, especially compared to live organ.

Still, your mightiest subwoofer, a true one, not the so-called subs that are really just woofers, will have a lot of fun with it. A true sub has, for a change, a lot to work with.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2003-10-31

Let's state up front what some may regard as drawbacks of this CD: first, it's only 40 minutes long; second, it's an early digital recording (1979), and I believe is the earliest in the distinguished series of Michael Murray organ CDs on Telarc.

Now for its advantages, which to me are substantial enough to overcome any drawbacks. First, the organ: I'm an organ buff, and in my opinion this is one of the greatest organs in the USA. It has an unusual history. Built by the Bavarian firm of Walcker in 1857-63 for the Boston Music Hall, it was the first concert organ in the country. In 1884 it was dismantled to give stage space for the new Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1897 it was purchased by a wealthy gent who commissioned a lavish new music hall in Methuen Mass. for it, where it was installed and rededicated in 1909. It must be one of the very few organs in the world that enjoys its own music hall built especially to house it. It was revised and rebuilt by the famous G. Donald Harrison of Aeolian-Skinner in 1947. Today it has four manuals, 84 stops, 115 ranks, and 6,027 pipes (including two 32-foot pedal pipes).

The description of the tonal qualities of this organ in the CD notes (uncredited, but I suspect by the highly literate Murray, who has often written his own notes, as well as books on his teacher Dupre, Schweitzer, and French masters of the organ) is so apt, so right-on-target, that I'd like to quote it: "Neither wholly romantic nor wholly classic, the Methuen organ partakes of both styles of instrument and is suited to both styles of music. Its beauties include a unique mellowness that comes only to well-built flue pipes and only after decades of seasoning, and a miraculous blending of eight-foot foundations, whose harmonics interweave like the colors of a tapestry. The tutti is overwhelming, not abrasive. The mixtures are bright, not shrill. The foundations are full-bodied but remain, in even the most complex polyphony, clear. Accordingly, the Methuen organ is renowned as one of the world's artistic treasures." Amen. It is indeed a rare beauty.

Michael Murray is one of the pre-eminent organists of our day and a superb interpreter of Bach. He is a sound musician; his playing is never flashy or trendy or eccentric; and he never tries to show off: although he is an accomplished technician, his technique is there to serve the music, not the other way around (as one critic wrote, "He is definitely for us, we who listen to music first and organ fingerwork second"). I have long found him to be one of the most deeply satisfying Bach organists on record. This CD contains three major Bach works (in addition to two short pieces) in performances as compelling as any you will find. His tempos and his registrations are beyond reproach; they have just the right amount of gravitas, avoiding ponderousness on the one hand and lightness on the other. (He does tend to favor slower tempos, so those who like their Bach to move swiftly may be less satisfied than I am.) And the 1979 digital engineering turns out to be first class. In short, here we have it all: a master organist playing major Bach on a magnificent, tonally resplendent instrument recorded in exemplary sound: vivid, rich, and full, with excellent clarity and deep, natural bass. If you relish Bach, organ music, or organs, you are sure to enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Passacaglia in C, and a real subwoofer tester.......2000-11-03

The only real problem with this disc is that it is too short! This is a very early Telarc, and unfortunately, the CDs were not made very long in those days, only 39:59 on my player. Don't be misled by the June 1979 recording date, the Soundstream digital recorder and those Schoeps Colette Series microphones could do the job.

The recording is really magnificent, about as close to 'like there' as one is likely to find with stereo, with a wide stereo image with realistic depth. The organ at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall in Methuen, Massachusetts is quite an instrument, capable of classic and romantic colorations and textures, according to the liner notes. Not being an expert on organs, one thing I do notice is the 32 foot Principal in the Pedals, with the low 16 Hz fundamental tones.

The famous Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542, which begins the CD, is outstanding. One can hear immediately the outstanding presence of the recording and the immense power of the performances. One simply forgets about analysis and listens.

Thank God there is not another Toccata and Fugue in d minor here! Sure, it's a magnificent piece, but Heaven knows that has been recorded enough. Does it have to be on virtually every CD single of Bach organ music? Murray plays the Toccata in F Major, BWV 540, with great conviction, and the sound is magnificent. One wishes they had included the fugue that generally goes with it, but I did warn you this is an early CD, and they didn't make them very long then. Telarc really should reissue these performances on a CD with more items.

I found this to be a great CD for auditioning subwoofers. Do you want to see if a subwoofer goes deep? Go to Band 3, 29 seconds in, and there is the first of a series of sustained 32 foot pedal tones (16 Hz fudamental), good and strong, of the Passacaglia in C, BWV 582. If you don't get that 'air shaking all around you' effect, the subwoofer isn't adequate for it! Most speakers and even subwoofers simply cannot play the bottom note at all.

Not to get caught up in the technical merits of the recordings, Michael Murray's performance of the great Passacaglia in C is awe inspiring. Bach's Passacaglia may be the greatest piece of music ever written, and it is hard not to believe it when listening to this magificent performance. The Passacaglia is a strong, driving work, working out the variations on the theme with an inexorable logic. There is absolutely nothing like it, and this is the ideal performance.

The other two bands on the disc are much shorter pieces, "Vater unser im Himmelreich," BWV 737 and "All Menschen muessen sterben," BWV 643, which are just under 2.minutes each. They are meditative pieces, much quieter, though there is some nice deep pedal work. Surely Telarc could put some other works with these, to get the time to over 70 minutes.

I was tempted to downgrade this because it is rather short by today's standards, and the material should be reissued in a collection with other pieces. However, with performances and recordings like this, and what surely must be the best Passacaglia in C, it is really worth whatever you would pay for it. This is a CD for a lifetime of listening.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Masterworks series.......2007-07-06

Brilliant Classics' "Masterworks" series, if you can get them cheaply (and currently they go for about $1/CD from Amazon's France Web site), are a great way to amass a significant library of the works of several great computers. The production values and the performances themselves are uneven, and the interpretations are not always historically-informed (unlike the bulk of Brilliant's "Complete Editions" of the works of Bach and Mozart). But there are numerous gems in the rough in The Masterworks, and the economic value is unsurpassed, even if you were to throw away half of the CDs in each set.

You're unlikely to throw away much of this Schubert collection though. This seems to be the finest of the Masterworks sets, with a succession of solid, often first-rate performances of most of the major Schubert works. Here's what you get:

- The symphonies, performed by The Hanover Band in a historically-informed style. Very interesting performances perhaps marred by an odd recording balance that makes the woodwinds sound distant. Takes up four CDs
- The six Latin masses. Also the Deutsche Messe in the version with wind instruments. Five CDs in all
- Edison Denisov's completion of Schubert's unfinished dramatic work Lazarus (2 CDs, Helmuth Rilling's premier recording)
- The last four string quartets (including the Quartettsatz) with #9 thrown in. Also the octet, piano quintet ("The Trout"), string quintet and both piano trios. In short all the canonical chamber works. Performances are strong, and well recorded
- Two CDs of violin/piano duets, including Op. 137 and Op. 162
- 19 of the 21 "canonical" piano sonatas (missing #7 and #12) as well as the Moments Musicaux, Impromptus, German Dances, Wanderer Fantasy and several other piano works, 11 CDs in all. As with the chamber music, the performances and recordings are strong, often stunning
- Two CDs of piano duets, including the Divertissements and D. 617
- Song cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, and four CDs of standalone songs, including such "standards" as Erlkönig and Gretchen am Spinnrade. The singers are a bit uneven here, ranging from standouts Robert Holl, Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau and John Shirley-Quirk to the somewhat shrill Arleen Augér

Missing from the collection is Rosamunde, and a number of famous songs: Die Forelle (The Trout), Death and the Maiden, Ellens Gesang III (the so-called Ave Maria, D. 839), Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Der Wanderer. But you do have almost all the important instrumental works, and most of the vocal works generally considered to be essential, with some padding added in the form of minor works such as the parochial Deutsche Messe, the German Dances, and the modernist-informed completion of Lazarus by the 20th Century Russian composer Denisov.

As with the other Masterworks sets, there are no program notes. You'll need to do your own research. Answers.com is a good starting point for Schubert compositions. There are also no song texts or translations provided, so again you'll need to track down your own. Try "The Lied and Art Song Texts Page" for lieder lyrics and translations. Hunt down a good price on this collection, browsing one of Amazon's European sites if necessary, and treat yourself to many hours of lovely music for the cost of a modest night out.

1 out of 5 stars Will not buy this.......2007-03-16

I can't see D965 or D945 on this 40 disks worth of Schubert. Bizarre! There are so many great songs missing it scares me.

4 out of 5 stars Worth it!.......2006-12-19

One of the best in "The Masterpices" series. Many of the discs (the symphonies in particular) were licensed from Nimbus and other full-line labels. Not all that long ago these discs would have set you back $18 to $20 a piece. That said, I still wouldn't part with my Hyperion collection. 40 CD's at this price... you can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to jumpstart a schubert collection.......2006-12-19

Hartmut Holl, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Stephanie Brown, and Jaime Laredo as well as the Stuttgart Bach Collegium performing Schubert are hardly "left-behind artists and ensembles" as the previous naysayer states. These are licensed from major label releases and from the original masters issued at a bargain price, especially for the number of discs you get. Sound quality ranges from good to excellent. Good for all Schubertians and anyone who wants to jumpstart a Schubert collection.

1 out of 5 stars Better to Pick a Few First-rate Performances.......2006-11-14

This is a bargain in dollar/listening time ratio, but who cares? There are many second-rate performances by left-behind artists and ensembles. Obviously the economics of resurrecting disks that don't require royalties has been the driving factor of selection. (On the other hand, the complete edition boxed sets of Bach and Mozart, which you'll find if you look, are stupendous successes artistically.)

5 out of 5 stars Bach Organ Works - Helmut Walcha.......2007-01-05

I never thought I would like Bach's organ works as they can be dense and daunting. However, if you can get onto Bach's wavelength, he can transport you to an electric cosmos of beauty and enlightenment. I was given a collection of Bach organ LPs by Helmut Walcha some time ago. My friend said that Germans regard Walcha as the premier interpreter of this music. He certainly knows how to play the organ and this music soars in his hands. This music is more varied than most people imagine. Some is extremely simple and delicate while some crushes your brain! I have always loved Archive recordings and these did not disappoint!

5 out of 5 stars Glorious.......2006-07-01

Helmut Walcha was named my TIME as "the" Bach interpreter for organ. I think that is true more than ever today with all the influences of the French Romantic school, the slam-dunk American style and the avant garde crowd. The recording has a German sound, quintessentially Teutonic in both style and approach. While Bach sounds different and even magnificient on an Aristide Cavaillé-Coll organ it does not sound authentic - or as we perceive authenticity.

The fact that the artist is blind(!) means that unlike other folks who can use the music as aids, he must rely on his phenomenal memory. This is truly the stuff of genius. The sonatas are brilliant and I have never heard a better B Minor Prelude & Fugue. I only with that his stupendous "Kunst der Fuge" could have been transferred from record to CD.

5 out of 5 stars Religious experience........2006-03-04

This set of many Bach's Organ works by Helmut Walcha is, in my opinion, the greatest recording of these immortal treasures. There are almost all of Bach's Preludes and Fugues for organ, as well as many fantasias, miscallenous works and his chorals for this instrument. Walcha plays with utmost respect to the original scores, his playing is clear and powerful. Many other organists have allowed themselves quite a bit of experiment with these pieces (likes of Ton Koopman are over the top), but in the end, i've always came back to Walcha's renditions. If you want to treat yourself with some of the greatest music ever written, then get this rare set! Bach's organ music can be challenging at first, especially the fugues, and many of my friends have complained that they hear nothing else than noise in these pieces. I suppose you have to have listened this kind of music for quite some time, before you can wholly appreciate these unique pieces. But once you have, you find a world full of riches and wonder, world which only Bach can bring you. And this is a world i wouldn't change for any riches in the world.

5 out of 5 stars A real bargain at under $100.......2005-12-20

It is hard to express in words what an incredible achievement this is. The immense feats of memory alone, demanding far greater efforts than sighted performers face, command our respect. So does the consistent quality of Walcha's playing.

Bach's almost mathematical absorbtion with fugue lies at the centre of his genius. He was an organist first and foremost, an organist all his life. Like Bach, Walcha is an obsessive controller who uses music to shape his world. He treats each piece as a treasure to be cherished and burnished, and this makes him the greatest Bach organist since Schweitzer. We are told that Bach would travel miles to hear great organists perform, and Helmut Walcha is just such an organist as those.

The magnificent instrument used here is celestial in tone. To those for whom Bach fugues conjure up images of Christopher Lee playing Dracula, or dull Sundays in church, here is one of the great achievements of Western civilization, a glittering pinnacle of Baroque art, performed by a great modern spirit, in one handy box. You can't have Michaelangelo ceilings in your home, or Bernini bronzes in your living room, but by golly, you can put this on your stereo.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly music.......2005-02-23

I'm not a big organ music fan- maybe it's because it reminds this atheist too much of church! But the music here by Bach, and especially the playing by Walcha are just fantastic. I was dubious that I could find interest in 11 CDs of organ music, but I'm enthralled by every minute of each disc. A wonderful bargain!

Marie-Claire Alain is not only one of the greatest organists alive today, but she stands directly in a what is undoubtedly the world's greatest tradition of organ playing. It was France that first rediscovered and cultivated Bach's organ music, and which in turn stimulated the great works of Franck, Widor, Vierne, and their school. Alain has recorded Bach's complete organ music no less than three times, here on historical organs of Bach's own time. Each disc is planned as a recital that showcases both the music and the instrument. Her performances are simply the last word in style, musicianship, and virtuosity. Magnificent. --David Hurwitz

3 out of 5 stars Complete set CD review of Bach.......2007-05-12

I discovered Bach organ music 40 years ago. I love Bach, everything he wrote. I have 4 complete sets of Bach organ recordings. Marie Claire-Alan is my favorite organist of everyone I have heard. I met Marie and her husband in person after a performance she gave in Chicago. I have 2 complete sets of Bach organ played by Marie. One is on records and the other the new CD set. She is a little older now when she recorded the CD's. The albums have a more youthful sound to them, a little more energy and different registration selection on the organs. I love Marie in her youthful recordings more than these. I love the albums so much I will digitize them and listen to them over the new CD collection. I play the albums on my Linn turntable through McIntosh equipment.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Collection of Bach .......2005-09-25

Marie-Claire Alain has recorded Bach's complete organ music 3 times, this set being the second time. She plays quite differently now, but these are some of the best interpretations. Each cd fearures a different organ dating from Bach's time, and all of the booklets are filled with pictures, history, and even the stop registrations for each of the pieces are given. Quite alot of research! If those of you who are new to Bach's organ works, I would recommend starting on a smaller scale, as some of these works can be quite intense to listen to. At any rate, this possibly may go down as one of the famous recordings of the century.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!.......2004-07-27

From this huge box set, it is quite obvious that Bach was a dedicated composer for the organ (and obviously a virtuoso organist for that matter). Bach was a very prominent composer who lived in the Baroque era, and to truely understand his works and their style you must have a general outline of knowledge of the timeframe in which he lived. And so the Baroque era, (1600-1750) was characterized by vastness of proportion, rich counterpoint, great splendor and a highly ornamented melodic line. (One should note that the era abruptly ended after Bach's death which actually shows his importance in it) Some of these pieces are examples of works that require performers at the very highest degree to play them. His works go way beyond the famous Toccata and Fuge in D Minor, and with a "Complete" edition you can listen and hear them all for yourself, hence grasping the full view of his genious. This set is of wonderful value and worth every penny. Unfortunately, the Master's version is not available in a CD store, and so we must indulge upon other's interpretations. This out of the others stands as one of the very best. It is also complementing to the experience to have an instrument of the period (which is so in this set). Bach devoted his entire frame of mind towards the spreading of God's kingdom, therefore one could derive that he felt that by creating enlightening and insightful music, he was doing a lowly service to his God. Overall--this is a fabulous interpretation, and it will deepen one's respect and awe for Johann Sebastian Bach, the greatest organist who ever lived.

5 out of 5 stars Monumental Artistry.......2003-03-08

Although I am partial to the Romantic Organ, particularly in the vein of Widor, Vierne and Rheinberger, it all begins with Bach. And in this case, one could say that it all begins with Marie-Claire Alain and her wonderful interpretations. Alain seems to understand that Bach was above all else a religious composer. Many "complete" works of Bach play short shrift with the liturgical works whereas these are some of the most satisfying of the group.

The sound is pure sonority, almost perfect, and the technical prowess is just awesome. Out of the millions of notes played, I never heard a miscue or slight jiggle. Still, keyboard wizardry is only part of the story. The registration is a work of art in itself. Alain understand the difference between the Baroque and the Modern, the French and the German and the old and the new. Just as she is a "natural" for Widor or Vierne, she also seems to have entered the Bach mind on some of these.

This is a fabulous collection worthy of any serious student of classical music. Nowhere can one derive such satisfaction that listenting to Bach played by Ms. Alain.

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Sacrifice.......2001-06-30

I gladly sacrificed two of the four speakers in my car to this wonderful, wonderful treasure. What more can I say?

5 out of 5 stars Bach for professional listeners.......2006-01-30

What I found amazing about this boxset is the opportunity to enjoy Bach in complete form. From my point of view Passacaglia performed by Werner Jacob is a five star performance. Also BWV 593 and BWV 596 push up and show up no limits for the listener. This 16 CDs aggregate the perfect union between the artist, instrument, listener and Bach. And at the end of the day I can say that organ works can still be ... trendy. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Bach Organ Works on original organs.......2004-10-24

121 organ tracks or works on 16 CDs has to be spaced out in about six days. The music is so restful I found myself dowsing. The price for a new set through Amazon was right. Bach organ hymns made Luther.

When it comes to organ music there's Bach, and there's everyone else. The actual amount of organ music that he composed is in dispute for a couple of reasons. On issue is attribution: much of the music exists only in copies from Bach's pupils and family members, and so the question of authorship may be in doubt. The other issue is which instrument Bach actually intended some of the keyboard music to be played on. Although scholars agonize over this problem, the fact is that Bach's music usually sounds fine played even on kazoos--it's almost indestructible--so the organ suits it in any case. This collection is one of the most comprehensive available, and it's excellently played and recorded. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the great CD sets of all time.......2006-02-08

Like another reviewer here I grew up on Helmut Walcha's DG set on LP, and was also familiar with a number of other "great Bach organ work" collections.

One can cavil over the way Hurford takes some of the pieces, I suppose, but his flair, imaginative registrations, and sheer musicality are hard to beat, and the recording too is fantastic.

It's quite easy to listen to three or four CDs from this set in a row, which says something about how fertile Bach's imagination, but also how absorbing Hurford's performance, and how willing he is to avoid generic and worthy church-like interpretations. This is music and music-making of the highest quality.

4 out of 5 stars One of two "keepers".......2005-07-02

A lot of reviews rave about this set. I just wish they would say why it's so good and I hope they're, well, comparing it to something. Most seem to like the "choice of registration" which maybe one way an organist sizes another up.

Preferences in interpretation generally reflect the emphera of a time, and not absolutes. Choice one for this guy is probably Walcha. Dignified and insightful playing probably much more in line with what was expected of, and provided by, Bach way back when.

This set is flashier and lighter in some ways, more bombastic in others--very much a late Twentieth Century effort. Superficial. It suits a less thoughtful approach to the music which isn't a bad thing and isn't necessarily "damning with faint praise." I just doubt if this is really what the music should sound like and I don't mean that in the same way when I say that about Gould's playing. Gould was highlighting an intense part of Bach's craft, pointing the way into the music so to say.

This is a good set for those who like to shake the timbers with organ music; when it was first released in the early digital era it was marketed that way. Bach's music is pretty bullet-proof so it can stand this kind of approach. If you're not a hyper-critical listener, a period instrument hardliner, or a professional organist with strong well thought out opinions this is probably the set for you as the Walcha will sound dry and academic. On the other hand, if you are a powerful admirer of rock and roll classical this might actually be way too much Bach for you. I generally play this set (or Stokowski transcriptions) when I'm in a brain-dead mood and I want Bach-like stimulation without any work on my part. It's really quite nice.

2 out of 5 stars Bach the organ works.......2004-11-23

A poor, jumpy, amateurish and unimaginative rendition of the pedal exercitium in g minor is what sticks to mind. Although its only an exercise i think it's worth more than that. More interesting stop combinations could have been used here. The toccata and fugue in d minor was too 'fancy' and was a boring affair overall with a silly choice of stops. I expected more from Peter Hurford. If this is the first time you've heard organ music please don't run away beacause of this. It can be so much more intersting.

Overall i dont think these performances do Bach Justice. Better versions can be found at virtuallybaroque.com (not my site)and better still competely free.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Hurford gives incisive readings.......2004-04-05

Peter Hurford's traversal of the entire organ literature for London Decca is truly one of the greatest recorded achievements. All of the performances in this seventeen-disc set are immaculately played and perfectly performed. His vision, technicality, and sensibility make him a sensitive and authoritative interpreter of J.S. Bach's organ works. The records are mostly digital, crystal clear, and quite powerful. Hurford's command of his technique is astounding. I cannot stress how important this set truly is. I HIGHLY recommend buying this compilation. At about 8 dollars a CD, this is most certainly a steal.

5 out of 5 stars EMPHATICALLY 5 stars!.......2004-02-27

Bach's organ works place incredible demands on the performer, both physically (consider the endurance it takes to play the massive Toccata in F major), technically (the Trio Sonatas, among many others), and interpretationally. Peter Hurford triumphantly meets those demands in a spectacular set of recordings.

To those who are doubters: listen to the (in)famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, that overplayed warhorse. Hurford brings to it an electricity that makes you feel you are hearing it for the first time again. He also has an amazing ear for registrations, one of the most underestimated difficulties of an organist's art, never wearying the ear, but using a wide palette of colors. [Bach himself was widely known for his innovative registrational practices. Contemporaries remarked that when he was testing organs he would pull combinations of stops that they were certain would sound badly together, only to find that he had created an entirely new sound. Thus, creative registrations should not offend purists in any way.]

Hurford's approach to these works obviously takes into consideration, but is certainly not bound by, historically informed performing practices. His phrasing is immaculate, and consistently interesting. In all, this is a stunning accomplishment.

GET THIS WHILE IT REMAINS AVAILABLE. The classical recording industry is in trouble, and the deletions axe is constantly falling. Large, expensive sets like this are sure to go. While the price itself appears high, it is really very reasonable, running under $8 per disc.

Since Bach constantly reworked his own music, it's always been seen as fair game that others should do so, too. Angela Hewitt's disc of Bach arrangements thus stands in a noble tradition, as well as carrying it boldly into the future. But if three of these 17 short pieces are Hewitt's own inventions, others are welcome discoveries from the nearly forgotten past. None of Busoni's majestic arrangements is here, but instead, we find fascinating pieces by a plethora of English composers, including Lord Berbers, Herbert Howells, and William Walton. Hewitt's own liner notes are a mine of information--some of it comic, much of it illuminating--as well as a guide to her keyboard philosophy. And her playing is as superb as we now expect. In D'Albert's version of Bach's stupendous Passacaglia in C Minor, she somehow manages to make the piano sound like a large organ echoing through a church. In other modes, she can be plangent, frisky, hesitant, or imbued with the most gorgeous cantabile; she seems to have a hotline to the religious fervor Bach wanted to evince. This disc may be built out of a collection of favorite encores, but in sum it's a feast. --Michael Church

After a little period of adjustment, these arrangements 'grow on you', because they are so very well performed. Bach, a great arranger himself, would have smiled a lot listening to what's been done with his stuff.

This is a CD you'll always enjoy revisiting. Miss Hewitt shares the deep wonders of J.S. Bach, in a powerful and moving way. I especially like the way the recording ends -- the pentultimate Passacaglia in C minor knocks you over, and the finale Alle Menschen mussen sterben gently, yet deliberately, restores the listener. Translate the German title to better understand the root of Bach's compelling theme.

4 out of 5 stars A unique CD in Angela Hewitt's Bach cycle.......2005-07-27

Amassing now over a dozen CD's in her Bach cycle, Angela Hewitt puts her focus on several famous - and some not-so-famous - piano transcriptions of Bach. The overall flavor and tone of this set is a little different than her other Bach recordings. Not present in this music are the lively dance rhythms of the French courante, menuet or bourree found in the Suites or Partitas - or even much of the intellectual fugues from the "Well-Tempered Clavier" and others. Rather, there is a more introspective, gentle and often tangibly spiritual essence to the selections on this CD - largely due to many being transciptions from choral and church cantatas. In many of the more familiar pieces, there is a comforting and assuring atmosphere that Miss Hewitt communicate most sensitively - which when reading the German translation of the original works in the liner notes, would seem to be the intent of the Lutheran Kappelmeister Bach.

In her most-informative notes, Hewitt points out how "the ability to translate spirituality into sound at the keyboard is of certainly important to avoid famous tunes sounding banal or hacknayed." Her versions of the famous "Jesu" and "Sheep may safely graze" (as well as her own three lovely transcriptions) do seem to succeed in conveying a spiritual core to avoid sounding trite. In the great Bach pastoral work ("Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"), Hewitt convincingly summons the nurturing personna of Dame Myra Hess who played her piano transcription of this choral work almost daily over BBC radio to comfort many in hardship during the great war. Maybe in a couple pieces, as some suggest, Ms. Hewitt draws out her tempos a bit, but I found this gave the piece a more introspective tone that I appreciated later upon further listening. Other works on a more grand scale (like the Passacaglia for organ) reveal Bach as a daunting church composer and sound reasonably authoritive on Hewitt's piano. Her best pieces here may be also her most personally involved ones - her own three transcriptions - which embody a most moving, introspective and heartwarming quality. I think these are a humble highlight of the set.

The Hyperion sound is clear and full bodied while the substantial CD notes offer valuable history of the transciptions and Ms. Hewitt's perspectives on how she approached them. Significant coverage is given to the past legends of the piano like Kempff, Hess, Howells, d'Albert that will be appreciated especially by pianists. In short, a unique, spiritual and lovely set of recordings in Angela Hewitt's ever-growing quiver of Bach recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely divine.......2005-03-23

Angela Hewitt is superb playing these transcriptions of a variety of Bach's works.

The disc starts with five excellent choices of transcriptions by Wilhelm Kempf. The first is simply splendid, namely the Sinfonia in D major. Perhaps this is the most convincing of all the works in terms of the piano being the right instrument for the music. "Wachet auf" is also peformed very well.

Next are two lovely pieces, the Mary Howe transcription of "Sheep may safely graze," and the Myra Hess transcription of "Jesu, joy of man's desiring." These are my favorites on the entire disc.

Another beautiful piece that Hewitt plays very gracefully is Harriet Cohen's transcripition of "Sanctify us by Thy goodness."

Hewitt is spectacular in the toughest piece, the Eugen d'Albert transcription of the famous Passacaglia in C minor. This piece sounds really good on the piano, but I have to admit that I miss the pedal notes.

I highly recommend this beautiful set of Bach arrangements.

4 out of 5 stars Superb in parts.......2005-01-29

First, I should say I am no Bach purist and I love to hear his music performed on the piano or by symphony orchestras. However this cd is not the unalloyed pleasure which some reviewers here would have you believe. The piano sound lacks warmth and Hewitt drags out the phrases sometimes too much for my personal taste; but there is much to enjoy on this disc and its good qualities vastly outweigh the slight mannerisms
The sinfonia to bwv29 (which Bach himself later arranged for solo violin) is a superb opener. Hewitt's playing is heroic and dynamic and the bright piano tone is here an advantage. The following sicilliano is decently enough played though I find her phrasing slightly too halting. This is the case too with Nun Komm, an arrangement of one of Bach's greatest chorale preludes. Hewitt falls short in these two pieces (and 'Ich Ruf zu dir') of the magic obtained by Dinu Lipatti in his classic recording.
In the famous 'sleeper's wake', Hewitt produces some rather choppy phrases; worse, she builds melodramatically to an anachronistically 'big' climax. The wonderful 'ich ruf' is, by constrast, played with a sensitivity close to Lipatti's. She ends it rather abruptly however.
'Sheep may safety graze' for all its fame, is hardly one of Bach's better pieces. Hewitt's performace matches the gentleness of this early work, though the piano seems somehwat overly bright, this may be partly due to the arrangement. The glorious 'Jesu joy of man's desiring' receives a fine interpretation, which I found moving.
There follow a couple of arrangements of Chorale preludes by Hewitt herself. The first is the lyrical bwv 641. It is beautifully played, though again with her slightly hesitant phrasing, but the arrangement is questionable since the piece would seem to require a more sustaining intrument than the piano. The next work, bwv 614 has long been a great favourite of mine. Bach makes much use of chromaticism to convert the New Year chorale tune into a meditation on the death of the old year. Again the phrasing is 'bitty' but this is a moving performance.
Listening to Bach's early 'In Dulce Jublio', one can understand why he was berated for introducing strange tones into chorales and confusing the congregation. Hewitt's performance is very gfine indeed, but I cannot see the point of this arrangement since the piece itself is forgettable. BWV 727 is another rendition by Bach of the 'passion chorale'. Hewitt plays it hesitantly in a misguided search for expressiveness and its essentially lyrical character is somewhat lost. The fourth schubler chorale is rattled off at high speed, though with a delicate touch; there would seem to be more gravitas to this music than Hewitt suggests.
BWV 622 is one of the longest of the little organ book preludes. After a beautiful opening, she loses her way somewhat in the second part. The arrangement of Bwv 22 (which is a setting of a hymn tune which flowing sountermelody much in the manner of 'jesu joy) is given a good rhythmic performace.
Hewitt's performance of the arrangemant of the glorious aria from bwv 127 is, to my ears, the highlight of the cd. Truly wonderful music, wonderfully played, though she does her trick as in 'sleeper's wake' of overdramatising the climax.
The passacaglia and fugue is by far the weightiest work on the disc. This herculean work allows Hewitt to display her muscular side. This plays the opening of the fugue especially superbly which will be no surprise to those who have heard her performances of the 48, but again the climax is slightly marred by over-emphatic playing. I have less taste for the passacaglia than many, but Hewitt's playing brings it to life as well as could be imagined on the piano which is perhaps not the mots suitable instrument
The disc ends with a sensitive account of bwv 643. It seems a strange choice to end, since the piece itself, though pleasing enough, is not of Bach's finer inspirations. It does however bring the cd to a conclusion with a sense of repose.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Bach's Best.......2004-11-06

This is Volume Seven in Kevin Bowyers Bach Organ Works series of

recordings for Nimbus Records. It is a complete performance of

Bach's "Orgelbuchlein" or Little Organ Book. This recording

features not only Bowyers excellent performances of the chorale

preludes , but the Det Fynske Kammerkor under Alice Joensen sing

the chorales brilliantly too. The Orgelbuchlein was an unfinished

project of Bachs he was going to compose chorale preludes for the

entire liturgical church year. Unfortunatly he only made it from

Advent to Easter. At Fourty-Five chorale preludes it is still

quite an accomplishment. Mr Bowyer always uses good taste in his

choices for organ registers and the programs of his Bach

recordings are always well thought out. As I said this is Volume

Seven of the series I think there will be total of Seventeen

Volumes with a total of 29 CDs which looks to be one of the most

complete sets of Bach organ works on the market. Each one of the

volumes in the set can easily be recommended. The Nimbus sound is

up to their usual standards, always very good. One of the best

parts of The Orgelbuchlein is that you can a lot of good Bach in

a little package.
