Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

"Vision--The Music of Hildegard von Bingen"? Make that "Hildegard--the Dance Remix." (Yes, it has been used on the dance floor of at least one New York City nightclub.) What else can you call it when Richard Souther takes the stark, ecstatic plainchant of the 12th-century abbess and adds heavily produced electronic trance-and-dance tracks? Souther's additions aren't bad in themselves--they are a bit New Age-y, yet danceable in a druggy 3:00-a.m. kind of way--but slather them over Hildegard's spare, intense chant melodies and the effect is perverse, if not just silly. Don't blame poor Emily van Evera--she is a fine interpreter of Hildegard, and EMI simply asked her to record some unaccompanied solo tracks of the abbess's music and send in the tapes; she had no idea what was going to be done with them until this disc came out with her name on it. This shows up in the final product: the gently fluid pulse van Evera applied to Hildegard's music (which would make perfect sense in the a cappella performance she thought she was giving) feels completely disconnected from the rigid rhythms inherent in Souther's electronic accompaniment. Now, there are a number of customer reviews, below, from listeners who like this title a great deal--have a look at them, check out the sound clips, and by all means get this title if you're interested. But, if you're curious about Hildegard, go to the recording that made her famous eight centuries after her death: A Feather on the Breath of God. --Matthew Westphal

A very different style of Hildegard.......2007-01-30

This CD isn't quite the shining example of Hildegard's music, but it isn't dissapointing either. The new-agey music and the chanting go well together, but at times the mix is a little akward, and it is those moments when it seems that the vocals are just stamped on top of the music that takes away from this album. Otherwise, the music is pretty rich and conjures epic and heavenly images. I'd have to side with the 'purists' on this one: if you're a stickler for authentic sounding Hildegard music, go for the other albums such as Luminous Spirit because this one might come across as a little weird.

I have been a fan of music since before I was born it seems- I have almost all of her music- but this is the star on the night sky- people keep trashing this album /cd- I think this is the best of her visions/music and if you want to be swept away on clouds of tone and dance with angels of light then BUY this cd- I love to darken the house , light the candles and let this one spin again and again- listen closely to " for the virgin' it will make you want to play this over and over again-also this entire cd was recorded in the catacombs- how spiritual is that, music/thought/words/visions from years turned to dust and stone- may this cd bring you back to a time when the world was innocent and gentle/have played this along with Enigma and people can not get enough of this cd!!!!!!!!!!

I bought VISION, THE MUSIC OF HILDEGARD VON BINGEN without even hearing it first. I couldn't resist the album's cover art and the premise of recording the chants of a 12th century nun with modern original scores. I was delightfully surprised at how well the experiment works. The tracks are absolutely beautiful and haunting. In listening to one of the chants accompanied by an almost jarring drum beat, I felt as if I were dropped deep into a dense African jungle where a safari of large powerful natives are escorting small white hooded nuns to some mysterious lost city. A very different, very intriguing, very fine work.

"Every Element Has A Sound" ~ Heavenly Visions Of A Medieval Mystic.......2006-01-29

Hildegard Von Bingen (1098-1179), 12th century Benedictine nun, abbess and mystic wrote some of the most heavenly spiritual chants, psalms and canticles in the history of the Catholic Church. Compositions that are so unique and universal in appeal that they were embraced by the 'New Age Movement' more enthusiastically then they were originally by her own Church.

Similiar yet subtly different from the lofty, remote gregorian chants sung in the monastery, the music of Hildegard is much more accessible. Her experience of the 'Divine Mysteries' is conveyed in more emotional and earthy tones, thus linking the higher aspirations of the soul with the passionate nature of the human heart.

'Vision' was performed and recorded within the stone walls of St. Andrew's Church in Toddington, England, an almost perfect location to capture the medieval atmosphere of Hildegard's compositions. The female voices involved in this project are a sharp and welcome contrast to the all male gregorian choirs most of us are more familiar with.

Truly a mystical musical experience has been captured on these 17 exquiste tracks. For the spiritual seeker in all of us!

SUPERB MODERN CLASSIC.......2005-10-26

SOARING, ETHEREAL voices are followed by haunting, vaguely Middle Eastern new age sound. HILDEGARD meets ENIGMA. It works. The purists make no room for this kind of interpretation of Hildegard but I remind you that the Louvre built a separate museum to house the Impressionist art not because they were so valued but because they did not consider it serious art and would not put it under the same roof with the classics. Time made buffoons of them. Listen to the sound clips and judge for yourself.

The album "Come To Where The Love Is" is so far one of the best album of Ronnie Aldrich..the full compliment of the London Festival & Chorus have given this album truly best the instrumental album, I ever heard, my only comment though why it included the album Soft & Wicked, which was previously been released with another album..I do hope they could release all the other albums very very soon....enjoy! enjoy! enjoy!

The definition of "beautiful music". .......2004-09-05

"Beautiful Music" used to be a genre in the realm of popular music. It's also been called "easy listening" and then morphed into "adult contemporary". But today's adult contemporary is really just soft rock (albeit today's soft rock is harder than a lot of Top 40 was in the late 70s and early 80s). There used to be stations that played "beautiful music" exclusively: Stanley Black, Ray Conniff, Percy Faith, Frank Chacksfield, etc. Most of the playlist would be recent contemporary hits covered by choral groups, pianists, and orchestras. During that time, London Records sold a lot of their patented Phase 4 Stereo LP records and reel-to-reel tapes. The series was renowned for it's technical brilliance, using state of the art recording, mixing and mastering techniques. Ronnie Aldrich was among London's best selling artists and Tony D'Amato produced many albums using Aldrich's twin pianos backed by The London Festival Orchestra. These albums were not only known for their technical brilliance (which is still quite impressive even in the 21st century) but also for their glossy, gatefold covers featuring colorful artwork and graphics and maybe a sexy model or two. The two LPs featured on this CD were originally released in 1973 and 1972, respectively. The long list of artists whose hits are covered on these albums include Carly Simon, Bread, Dawn, Al Green, Roberta Flack, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Neil Diamond, Sammy Davis Jr., Albert Hammond, and Edward Bear. There are also covers of some hits by "one hit wonders" of the time, like Danny O'Keefe, Hurricane Smith, and Hot Butter. Gato Barbieri's "Last Tango In Paris" was a hit for Herb Alpert in 1973, Nino Rota's "Godfather" theme hit big for Andy Williams, Nilsson covered Badfinger's "Without You" and had a huge hit, and The Partridge Family put out a hit cover of Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do", all of which are featured here as well. Aside from "Tango" and "Godfather", more film themes abound from movies like "The Valachi Papers" and "Young Winston" as well as the Burt Bacharach-Hal David theme to "Lost Horizon". A beautiful version of "The Impossible Dream" is here too.
Ronnie Aldrich backed by The London Festival Orchestra is almost like having Roger Williams backed by Mantovani. At any rate, it works and these albums hold up very well today.
The playing time of this CD is 81:12, which came as a surprise to me. I thought 80 minutes was the maximum amount of time on a CD. I shouldn't be surprised. When CDs originally came out, we were told it was 70 minutes, then it was 74, then 75, then 80. Who knows what the limit really is?
Anyway, the mastering job of this CD is first rate, preserving the technical brilliance of the original recordings.

A new LP of Ronnie in CD!.......2004-07-25

There are 2 new CDs of Polygram, one is of Mr. Chacksfield, a wonderful orchestra with 2 LPs. 1 is inedit "Limelight", for the first time in CD. The other CD of Polygram is this of Ronnie Aldrich, too 2 on 1. The inedit in this case for CD is "Come to where the love is". Both CDs are excellents! The sound is 5 stars for the 2 CDs.
The 4 LPs represents the golden years of the big orchestras and Decca/London.
If you love the GOOD sound, the GOOD orchestras and GOOD arragments, buy this two new CDs of Polygram.
(Note for Polygram personal: Vocalion a few weeks ago debuted with 2 CDs with the same material in each half of this compilations! Please, can somebody do a little look to the records in this world before reediting again the same LPS?).
There are MANY records (LPs) and hidden treasures waiting to see the format in CD. And Many collectors and fans of Phase 4 Stereo waiting NEW music.....

All themes are great, and the sound incomparable, as in all London/Decca recordings.

Very good music of the MASTER OF THE PIANO!

I discovered the band " Crazy Penis " a few weeks ago after hearing samples of their songs I immeditaly Knew that I wanted to buy the cd crazy penis can mix dance and disco grooves with smooth jazz and funk bass lines -- In my opinion " wicked is music " is a musicial masterpiece which is hard to find with this type of music..... My favroite track is " Keep On "

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.
