    Amazon.com's Best of 1999

With lush, artful arrangements and vocals that float over hushed drum & bass beats, the debut record from Bows is like an unsettled dream filled with Freudian imagery and subconscious yearnings. Taking elements of Björk and Portishead, Bows give rise to something at once mysterious, disturbing, and beautiful. --Matthew Cooke

    Amazon.com

Jungle is built on one essential tension--between hyperspeed drums and half-speed bass lines. Bows' debut, Blush, gives the screw another turn, setting tentative Björk-like vocals, languorous strings, and slow-motion keyboards to jarringly frantic beats. It's like a 4 a.m. dream, with a soundtrack by Roni Size. But there the New Forms comparisons end. Bows, the project of former Long Fin Killie frontman (and acclaimed novelist) Luke Sutherland, is an art project first and a dance-music crossover second. The emphasis is on mood, not momentum, and most of the time the mood is a barely articulated melancholy. That's no surprise coming from Glaswegian Sutherland; the "postrock" that Long Fin and Too Pure labelmates Pram and Laika made back in the day upended rock's rebel-boy verities, demoting its front-and-center aggression to background status and pushing its liquid substratum to the fore. Bows does the same thing to electronica traditions, producing an album that'll have you, to quote two wise men, dancing in your head and crying in your beer. --Jeff Salamon

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Big wings, soft sound.......2004-08-09

Somehow the sound of Bows' "Blush" is too earthy to be properly classified as dreampop. The stormy percussion and jazzy horns of the opening track set off the tone for a strange trip-hop experience -- mysterious and seductive, with the sense that you should wake up from this dream soon.

It starts off quietly with the gently peculiar "Big Wings," followed by the muted concert hubbub of "Troy Polenta's Big Break" and the lurching, aching title track. Subdued female vocals, sputtery drumbeats and dreamy string arrangements line songs like "King Deluxe," the elegantly ominous "Speed Marina." Stuck in the middle is a wickedly funny little advertisement for the band, a touch of humor that grounds all of it. It would have been better if placed at the beginning or end, though.

"Blush" comes across as a beautiful nightmare in the middle of a jazz club. Very sensuous and beautiful, but also surreal and disturbing. A feeling of unease runs all through the album, especially since the songs tend to run into one another, shifting and changing like dreams do.

The sound of the music is a mix of electronic beats, shimmers and soundscapes, layered smoothly with some very muted bass and solid percussion. The strings lift it up to the sky, and the jazzy horns pull it back down to earth. It's a surprisingly liquid sound, mixing gentle trip-hop with stormy underbeats.

The vocals come from three people -- Ruth Emond, whose voice is very sweet and airy; Signe Heirup Wille Jergesen, whose voice is a little less ethereal in songs like "Sleepyhead"; and frontman Luke Sutherland, with a sort of quiet falsetto that he keeps low. The feeling they give off is quite sultry, a bit like psychedelic torch singers.

"Blush" lives up to its name -- colorful and sweet. The lush instrumentation and dreamy vocals soften the uneasiness of Bows' debut, and make this a wonderful trip-hop album. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to blow your mind!.......2002-06-16

Out of the hundreds of cd's I own, this is without a doubt my favorite. Once this disc hits your player I doubt you'll ever want to take it out. This record is filled to the brim with lush beats, beautiful vocals, and mesmerizing sounds that will fill your heart and soul with glee. Luke Sutherland is a creative genius, destined to go down as one of the finest artists of our time. The man doesn't only create beautiful music but is an up and coming author as well! "Blush" is a triumph, the type of record that will make you want to go out and buy everything the band has ever released (take that as a first class endorsement for the second release, Cassidy, which is also top notch) and everything the label that signed them has released (Too Pure Rocks!). Buy this record!

    5 out of 5 stars A Solid Album.......2002-04-25

This album's a real pleasure to listen to...something of a continuation of Long Fin Killie's "Amelia." Luke Sutherland did a good job balancing his falsetto on that final LFK album, and he should rely on it more here--the woman's got a great voice, but...

    He should make more albums.

    3 out of 5 stars undiscovered gem..........2001-08-24

I have been impressed by this album and play it quite a bit. It is somewhat of an undiscovered gem and whenever people are round my house and hear it they all want to know what it is. Having said that, for all that I like it I find myself unable to really fall in love with it. There is a distance there which stops me from engaging with it fully. Possibly it is a bit to cold and clinical, no real sould to it. It sounds great though and gives Massive Attack or Portishead a run for their money.

3 out of 5 stars Too busy showing off to deliver the goods.......2001-05-26

Now, I'm all for a bit of breakbeat, orchestral and sequence grandstanding, provided it doesn't detract from the beauty of the song. But all I'm finding here is... meandering, pompous streaks of breakbeats, samples, and wistful sighs. Without direction. There's something to be said for classical song structure! You know, chorus, bridge, clever interlude, magnificent recoil away from the symmetry, and circling back down into a haunting choral fade. This stuff is mostly all over the map - it makes for decent background prettiness, but closer study reveals that Bows are simply posing, while forgetting to entertain us. Witness a few of my favorite songs in a similar vein - Goldfrapp, Utopia or Lovely Head; Hooverphonic, Battersea or just about anything on the first 2 CDs; Lamb, Gorecki; Mono, Life In Mono; Emiliana Torrini, Baby Blue; Locust, Just Like You; Massive Attack/Cocteau Twins, Teardrop; Mythos, November; Saint Etienne, Goodnight Jack; etc. That fire just isn't here. This is a fairly good CD, but it just didn't move me - it sounded more like the Portishead B-Side remnants than anything else. Ah well, the search goes on...

    Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Luke Sutherland, the mastermind behind Bows, really knows how to drape a gauze of sparkling sensuality on top of his work. His second release, Cassidy, contains hazy, Spiritualized-sized orchestration, Gus Gus/Massive Attack-styled trip-hop, and a Low-like sense of minimalism. On Cassidy, guitars sound like harps, and hushed, breathy vocals (from Sutherland and guests from acts like Speaker Bite Me and Snowpony) become naked siren songs. Beats appear and disappear in vapor trails within the tracks. The overall sound may float near shoegazer, slowcore, and drum & bass, but the music comes in cloudy forms that change and lose shape once you try too hard to categorize them. Bows uses basic vocal and synthetic sounds to inflate the songs, making them rise to heavenly heights of narcotic pop, but the twinkle of bells and organs keeps the innocence level just as high. Cassidy is a dreamy record, one that brings all the aural comforts of Slowdive with the additional kick of the occasional beat to keep the disc moving. --Jennifer Maerz

2 out of 5 stars Cassidy but no Casanova.......2003-11-29

European quirk-tronica can only go so far. Unfortunately Bows missed that memo. I am not sure what happened between their much-heralded debut, 1999's Blush, and their new record, Cassidy, but somewhere somebody missed something. Perhaps I'm just not hip enough to get this record, I don't know. Bows is what Japanese mixmeister Cornelius would sound like after half a bottle of Nyquil. That's not to say front man Luke Sutherland is without talent; his would just be better served as one of Bjork's many collaborators. I kept hoping I would be rescued by the theme song to Mr. Magoo but instead was left with empty atmospherics and a Scandinavian chanteuse.

    4 out of 5 stars Cassidy (4.5).......2003-07-12

The thing about Cassidy is that it's not that different from Blush. The only real difference I noticed from both CDs is that Cassidy has more female vocals and actually appears to be slightly softer than Blush. None of these things is really a bad thing, but they aren't necessarily good things. The tracks are still as charming, and still as different in comparison to most other CDs out there. The bad thing is that they lack individuality. One track seemlessly flows into the next, which normally is a good thing like in Boards of Canada's "Geogaddi" or Stereolab's "Sound Dust", but in Cassidy, it just makes them indistinguishible.

'Luftsang', the title track in Cassidy bears a striking resemblence to 'Big Wings', which is the title track in Blush. Granted, both tracks are awesome, but it just seems a tad identical. It's almost as if Luke Sutherland was rushing the CD in some way, but instead of sacrificing musical beauty, he ended up losing a sense of interest in each of the tracks. When he was in Long Fin Killie, his CD 'Amelia' had a spark. When he made the metamorphosis into the alias of Bows, there was another spark, but his follow-up CD ends up being a dull knife trying to penetrate the side. For those that didn't care for Blush, they probably wont care for this. And for those who loved Blush, they'll love this, just possibly a little less. Despite some of the problems, it still surpasses other CDs as far as the eye can see.

    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly fluffy.......2002-05-24

Wow. This is a surprise. Bows' last release was hampered with a repetitive quality and an annoying sarcasm that was difficult to overcome. "Cassidy," on the other hand, is sheer ethereal bliss. Beats shift into soaring melodies, guitars plink and strum where harps should be, and the tempo constantly changes, speeding way up before quieting down at the end.

Those listeners discontent with Luke Sutherland sounding bored on "Blush" will be happy to know that he no longer plays as if he is above his audience. There are nothing but airy, dreamy love songs- albeit strange ones- like a supposed affair between Mohammed Ali and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, on this record. The melodies are pure bliss, and the strings and electronics backing them up make it an even greater pleasure to listen to.

My only problem is that with all the breathy vocals, no bass, and very little traditional song structure, there is nothing that you can really grab onto on this disc. You keep waiting for it to come, but true nirvana, it seems, is just barely out of reach, almost taunting the listener. But other than that minor gripe, "Cassidy" is easily one of 2001's best releases.

Think drum & bass heaven style.

    5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, GROUNDBREAKING DREAM-TEMPO POP............2002-04-19

...in the same spirit as Sutherland's BOWS debut "Blush", this courageous album solidifies his masterful leap in transforming the original darker intentions of triphop to chill-out and "lighten up" already. How? Well, he makes it all seem so easy by recombining only the finest blends of warmest world-grooves with its cooler counterparts born of ideas that originated in the realms of My Bloody Valentine/Cocteau Twins dreampop. Voila!!! Like magic, a little bit of heaven descends into the larger themes of emotional addictions and physical excess. "Cassidy" is the equivalent of finding an azure blue oasis right smack in the middle of urban anxieties. This music has tranformative powers....and will quickly have you in a state of aural transcendance and bliss. All the darkness that had pervaded early triphop bands like Portishead and Massive Attack is tossed into the cumulus outter-space of gamelan inspired bells and chimes decorating Sutherland's mystical, groove-laden sonic landscapes. The innovative beats and vocals that inhabit this rare collection of songs are, in a word, sublime. AN INSTANT DOWNTEMPO CLASSIC! NOT TO BE MISSED! GORGEOUS AND HEALING PARTY MUSIC!

5 out of 5 stars another good collection from luke sutherland.......2002-02-19

Luke Sutherland really impresses me. It surprised me how much lighter this CD is than his first, and still just as good. Highly recommend this to anyone with a good ear for new sounds.

The label that first brought DJ Krush to U.S. attention, New York's Shadow Records intends to "push the envelope of the indie sound past the place where hip-hop, abstrakt, ambient, alternative, and electronica collide." This 14-track compilation meets that criterion with groovable enigmas: DJ Cam's scary-pretty Hindu-hop cut "Lost Kingdom," Diferenz's jazz-hop swirl on "Poppin' Ya Head," Da Germ's piano-and-turntable collage "Physical Chemistry," and Sharpshooters' fey Euro-rap on "Spirits Unseen." The American arm of Britain's progressive Ninja Tune label, Shadow lacks a single artist as visionary as Ninja's Amon Tobin or DJ Vadim, but its organic trip-hop aesthetic--part slacker, part beatnik, part B-Boy--comes through with all the clarity of a Miles Davis horn blast on this cool collection. --James Rotondi

      Album Description

Cosmicity returns with the band's best album ever, mixing the catchy, simple synthpop structures and songs that made the band popular from the beginning together with a modern edge and slick production.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Album.......2003-03-01

I got into synthpop just a couple of years ago, and Cosmicity was one of the first acts I really explored. The first album I heard was "Isabella" and I thought that was amazing. After hearing that album, I wanted to hear more and subsequently tracked down other albums by Cosmicity. I previously thought that Isabella was the best, but then I heard Pure. This album is spectacular. Literally every track is a gem. Mark has always explored a lighter sounding synthpop, but with this album he seems to combine that sound beautifully with some of the most insightful, yet somehow amusing, lyrics I've ever heard. My personal favorite tracks are "I Want You," "Let Me In," "Escapism," and "I Have Nothing." I would consider this album a must have for all fans of synthpop.

4 out of 5 stars As tasty as 'purplesaurus rex' and snackcakes.......2003-03-01

Ever looked at your CDs, and had a hard time choosing between tossing something on by Pet Shop Boys, OMD, Erasure, New Order, or A-ha??

Yeah? Ok, well this album can rid you of that tremendous choice.

No? Well, all I can say is that I pity you and I hope your music collection gets better soon. Buying this CD will help you on your way. In fact, it is one of the early steps to recovery.

So what do you want me to say? This is a strong release from a talented band. It has good songs and great songs, highs and lows, twists and turns.

Goes well with thrill seekers and schizophrenics.

      5 out of 5 stars DEFEAT.......2003-02-27

The first time I heard Defeat I knew I wanted it. I actually found the single (which I recommend if you can find it) and listened to the song on repeat for 3 days. The rest of the cd is similarly good. I also recommend Cosmicity's Isabella cd.

      5 out of 5 stars Pure Music.......2003-02-26

This CD has been in constant rotation ever since I got it many months ago. Cosmicity has refined his sound to create even more catchy/complex songs that tear at the soul. His lyrics are more complex then I have ever heard before. He music is catchy and you will find yourself singing along and singing long after the CD has stopped spinning.

Some standouts on this CD include: "I Want You" a poppy song with a infectious melody, "Let Me In" a more minamilist song with amazing synth programming, it is a song of longing which really connects with reality. "Escapism" the only instrumental on the CD a very nice touch to set off all the other songs on the disk. "Hotel Allegro Chicago" a nice finish to the album, a slower and slightly darker song.

Overall this is definately a must have for anyone who likes electronic/pop music. A mix of sounds/moods and lyrical complexity gaurantee this album constant rotation in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Purification for the soul........2003-02-14

Love it. I just got this cd and it's already one of my favorites of all time. It's exactly what I look for in a cd. The music and lyrics are brilliant, and you can tell there is passion behind them. There are dancy songs and mellow songs, yet a consistency that makes the album a cohesive whole. Best song is "I Want You." It's a perfect mid-tempo song with a melody that sticks in your brain. Other standouts are "Darkness," "Something," "Let Me In," "I Have Nothing," and "The Princess of Detroit." The only track I don't dig is "The Perfect Shape." You want it to go somewhere that it never does. With that being the only negative, I highly recommend this cd. And for the record, it definitely does not sound like Erasure. The song "I Have Nothing" is reminiscent of Pet Shop Boys, but Cosmicity definitely has its own unique sound. One warning: don't listen to this before the previous album Binary Language of Love. I made that mistake, and Binary didn't even compare, yet it probably would have been good if I'd heard it before Pure.

A collection of the best of the group's previously unrecorded gems, from the powerful 'Maria' to the standard 'Kokomo', which comes across as a jazzy, fun classic here.

      Album Description

"You" is the second full album by Germany's melodic synthpop act Wave In Head. This time the band polishes the song writing and electronic programing even more, mixing the use of both English and German language lyrics. Songs like "With You" and "Emotional Machine" stand out as synthpop anthems.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Even better then the first.......2003-02-26

This is an exceptional band, and an incredible album. I liked the first album Time to Speak, but I like this second album even more. As on the first album, his voice is very smooth and clear -- although I feel like this album might just be a little more polished then the first. I'd recommend both, though. The best songs, in my opinion, are If I Was You, The Other Side, and Free To Leave.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful synthpop!.......2003-02-26

Wave In Head is a band that I had a few songs by on some various artist samplers and their songs were among my favorites from those CDs. When I bought their first CD, Time to Speak, I was not disappointed. I like this CD, You, even better. Intelligent lyrics, catchy melodies, good music. Personal favorites from this CD are "Emotional Machine" and "Winter". I highly recommend this CD, and getting the "With You" single, which has 8 tracks and many remixes from this CD, as well.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it if you like synth.......2003-02-26

Great album. Not perfect, but a must for synthpop lovers. Start with the prior album too.

4 out of 5 stars great second album..... pick it up...........2002-12-26

this is the second cd from Wave in Head. i am on the third listen right now, and i like it. alot along the lines of the first one, yet a little different. catchy base that makes you tap your toes to it. this cd has the popular european sound. they sound along the lines of camouflage, boytronic, mobile homes, etc. smooth powerful vocals that are clear. given a choice, i rather have these vocals that you can hear over the distored vocals on a lot of cds. this is pure clear well produced songs.

another hit from a different drum.. keep it up Todd!!!

5 out of 5 stars Michael is "no one to forget".......2003-03-01

This album is the perfect culmination of uplifting dancy tracks and slow tracks that will sweep you into another dimension. Michael has a voice that is so utterly enchanting that you melt into a dream. His vocals are impossibly passionate and smooth, enhanced by his ... German accent. Absolutely sensational! His programming is excellent as well, a transcendental soundscape of beautiful sounds and catchy patterns.

Although I enjoy all of the tracks on this CD, some of my favorites are "What Could I Ever Try", "Progress", "I Began To Hope", "Trails", "Criminal Ballad", and "Polygone". This is definitely a CD that you can be pleased to have as a part of your collection. Michael will leave you spellbound with his talent and yearning for more.

      5 out of 5 stars Great debut.......2003-02-26

Led by the classic I Began to Hope, this synthpop album from A Different Drum offers a lot to the synthpop fan.

5 out of 5 stars "I just began to hope, but that hasn't been enough".......2001-11-17

As some of you may know, I recently put together a music project for the synthpop community regarding the tragic and heinous terrorist attacks of Sept. 11th. Among those who graciously contributed material to my compilation was an artist from Germany known as Wave In Head. I received a demo CD-R in the mail containing several tracks ... and I was amazed! The material on this CD-R was so good, I felt compelled to go right out and buy the CD ... and it's a purchase I have not regretted.

This has got to be one of the best synthpop albums of the year. Electronic melodies, emotional vocals that recall styles varing from Marcus Heyn of Camouflage to Martin Gore of Depeche Mode. The electronic arrangements are crisp, polished, and all of it is in the light synthpop vein of the 80's. But it's Michael Pohl's emotional vocals, with a German accent, which make this collection really stand out.

Highlights from the album: "Criminal Ballad" ... I chose this song for my upcoming 9/11 tribute. It's a song which gives the perspective of someone who lives in the city, and is forced to live in fear every day of his life because of all the crime and the bad things that happen. While not written specifically for the Sept. 11th tragedy, the lyrics seem to fit ... "Staying alive has become so easy, except at times when an anger rules the world" ... how true this is for the people in the World Trade Center.

"I Began to Hope" ... a very emotional ballad about having someone whom you love very much, let you down in the worst possible way. This is a very good choice as the first single off this CD, and Michael's very emotional vocal performance makes this track.

It is hard to find even one fault with this most excellent collection. Even the two songs on here which are sung entirely in German, "Wie Schnee" and "Zeit Zu Lieben", are very listenable. This CD has been unable to dislodge from my CD player since it arrived in the mail. This one comes highly recommended to those who like the melancholy side of electronic pop.
