"Dark, cinematic, oozing with soul...Speedometer prove that DJ Krush and Satoshi Tomiie are not the only artists holding the torch for Japanese electronic music."
Product Description
Japan's SPEEDOMETER come correct with a lush, cinematic take on downtempo with their debut US release, Private. Japanese acts such as DJ Krush, Boom Boom Satellites and Satoshi Tomiie are currently making inroads into what has traditionally been a Euro/American centered form of music, and SPEEDOMETER looks to be next in line. The cinematic musicality of Private will undoubtedly draw comparisons to Western acts such as Zero 7, yet there is no denying the dark, soulful and textured feel that has become the signature of forward thinking Japanese electronic acts.

Customer Reviews:
Great vocal warmup, especially of breath control, with unique syllabic exercises!.......2007-06-17
common popular exercises have failed to achieve. The breath control exercises especially have been an enormous help, and my students find them
not only challenging but fun as well. The warmup exercises are a little unique, bringing in tweet, hweet, and unique ways to improve sound production with exercises that combine air production with compression against the lips and teeth. The exercises as a whole help students with the lower register as well as the upper, and effectively improve power without yelling. A great program, I highly recommend!

Album Description
For the first time, a compilation brings together the best of one of rock's most admired bands, Dire Straits, and the best of its leader, guitarist-singer-songwriter Mark Knopfler. Private Investigations: Best of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler, a double CD, spans their entire careers.Customer Reviews:

Private Investigations, a new best-of from Mark Knopfler.......2007-04-10
Best Dire Straits collection so far........2007-03-04
Secondly, the "Private Investigations" set has its second disc devoted to the best of Mark Knopfler's solo career. Since that was madly uneven, it beats his spotty solo albums. Here, "Local Hero" is the only changed over to its album version. Great songs like "Boom Like That" or "Sailing To Philadelphia" are as good as his best Dire Straits work, and a track from his duets album with Emmylou Harris is included. All are really worth hearing.
While I have long been a fan of Dire Straits ("Love Over Gold" and "Brothers In Arms" were the two CD's I often used to show off - gawd I'm Getting Old - my brand new CD player and its spanking new technology), "Private Investigations" leaves off "Heavy Fuel" and the goofy "Twisting By The Pool." (That was the first time Knopfler showed off his sense of humor prior to the also missing "Industrial Disease.") On the other hand "Sultans Of Swing - The Very Best Of" under represented the band. "Private Investiagtions" also completely ignores the "Communique" album, and "Lady Writer" is essential Dire Straits in my opinion.
I have a few personal favorites here. The shock of hearing "Sultans Of Swing" during the period of all things Clash or Sex Pistols has never worn off. As a calling card of Mark Knofler as new guitar hero, it remains very hard to beat. The Noir detective tale of "Private Investigations" has long affected me, as has the call for understanding of "Brothers In Arms." My personal favorite missing songs are "Skateaway" and "The Bug." But since they appear on neither collection, maybe Knopfler isn't too keen on them, either.
So while you may finds yourself drawn to this more expansive collection, if you're a casual listener, "Sultans Of Swing" will do ok. If you are really interested in them, starting with the debut album or the still incredible "Brothers In Arms" both an even better bet than this particular Dire Straits best of.
PS - it's time to retire the floating guitar in the clouds image already!

Train is building a reputation as one of rock's tightest outfits one single at a time. The clever and sweet "Meet Virginia" was eclipsed by the gorgeous "Drops of Jupiter." My Private Nation may well prove these guys can squeeze more than one hit out of the album--although none are as enchanting as their breakthrough single. They continue to gravitate toward Elton John-inspired keys-and-guitar arrangements that are marked by studied rhythms and stellar production. While there's inventiveness to be found in these songs, there's a sameness to the tracks that makes the album as a whole fall a little flat. While attempting to recapture the grandeur of "Drops of Jupiter" on the opening song, "Calling All Angels," they overreach, and the pop-culture references scattered throughout date almost instantly. My Private Nation is a clean, intelligent disc, but it's also safe and middle of the road. Train's fans would be richly rewarded if the band took a few more risks. --Beth MassaCustomer Reviews:
Definitely a good listen........2007-02-26
3 stars is actually VERY good..........2006-10-19
Train is a very unique band with a southern flair that sports respectable talent and enjoyable creative/energy. The commercial stuff on this album will appeal to most and (that alone) can justify purchasing this CD. For some of us, like myself, however, there's much more enjoyment to be had. For instance, my favorite song on this CD is "Save the Day" - it's fun/upbeat, it's very clever in using analogies (the lyrics are great if you "get it"), and it's a very different and unique sound that shows "personality". "Calling All Angels" on the other hand, in my ears, is a very boring song that I usually skip past. Go figure.
In short, if you like what you heard on the radio from Train, you will really enjoy this CD - one song or another.
The ride continues.......2006-03-18
Finally!.......2006-02-19
Train has what I've been missing and this album (CD) brought it all together. They got it right, and are right on. This CD is easily one of the ten I have to take to my deserted island. Yes right up there with Led Zeppelin (4) and The White Album, Boston, And Etc. To be honest I've always struggled with who else would fill out that list. But this one will be there.
Many of the feelings and issues dealt with here just seem to speak to me personally and maybe that's my connection. But At my age I was losing my faith in rock and roll its future and wondering if I'd wasted my life as rooted to music as it has been. Train and this album have saved me.
Calling all Angels will be a classic in the annals of Rock and Roll, mark my words, and wait and see. But When I Look to the Sky, has touched my soul, and will be one of those songs I sing to myself when no one else is around and I need to reset my bearings.
The artistry in this CD seems to show the maturation of the band and its members. I'm sure some of these were very personal to these artists. My greatest fear is that they will decide or worse be persuaded by others or society to move away from what they have used to get where they are. But the integrity of there music so far seems to suggest they can be here for the long haul. Hopefully they will shut out the noise and just play, while we all reap the benefits. I was getting worried that I hadn't heard of anything new from Train, but as of the day I wrote this I saw they just released For Me It's You. Thus my hope is building.
While Keith Richards might live forever, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, and Steve Tyler won't. Finally I have some hope for the future.
A Very Good CD.......2005-09-30

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

What appears on screen during the World War II movie Saving Private Ryan suggests that director Steven Spielberg has studied the hyperviolence of Quentin Tarantino, John Woo, and Stanley Kubrick (think Full Metal Jacket). What you hear, however, assures that Spielberg still collects Norman Rockwell paintings. Composed by Spielberg's long-time musical companion, John Williams, Ryan denies the pair's penchant for ebullience in favor of funereal grace. Rather than mirror the visual kinetics, Williams lends the gunfire a tone-poem aura. Oliver Stone's Platoon makes the best comparison; remember how Barber's Adagio for Strings accompanied its most bloody moments? Williams later worked with Stone on JFK and Nixon, providing scores so somber, they qualified as morose. They remain two of his best, and Saving Private Ryan shares their restraint. --Marc WeidenbaumCustomer Reviews:

Take this for what it is..........2006-12-01
In addition, "I Will Never Be Untrue" is a live tune that never appeared on a studio release - it is a slow, bluesy number that is well-suited to Morrison's voice. "Build Me A Woman," another non-studio song, is, once again, pumped up with even more vulgarities - it has the feel of a band having fun while rehearsing, which is precisely the terrain this live release covers. It is NOT for the casual fan...Take it for what it is...

Morrison having fun and not much else.......2005-08-10
He revels in four-letter words and he delights in entertaining himself in "Mental Floss" as he goes through a less-than inspired scatter-brained monologue: "I'm tired of being a freaky musician, I want to be Napolean!" and "do you know women wear underpants? They do! How does a musician make the sound of a woman's underpants?" Meanwhile the band is playing free-form and are totally lost (Robby is playing slide licks which are going nowhere, and Ray is trying to come up with some solid chords to no avail) as they wait for Jim to get on with things. Continues "I wasn't doing a damn thing when I was standing there in front of a delicatessen and a bunch of rabbis and Indians came running up". This song is like the complete antithesis of the stanzas in "When the Music is Over" and "The End". It's an absolute embarrassment. During "Build me a Woman": "I don't know what I'm talking about and either do you. I'm a stupid m-f- and so are you! So take that little riddle and and stuff it up your a-!" and "this song makes me sick to my stomach and if it ever gets played you're all a bunch of dumb c-sckrs!" This almost sounds like a Jim Morrison impersonator, that's how off-the-wall it sounds. On Blue Sunday, Jim is so slow he sounds like he's falling asleep. I don't know how John Densmore sat through these sessions. Ray sings on "I'm your Doctor" and is quite vulgar: "you need a polish sausage". He also sings on "Close to You". "Car Hiss by my Window" ("Whiskey is like a woman-she's good when she's cheap") is not the same song which was recorded on LA Woman. "Gloria" is well done.
The quality of these recordings are fantastic and the songs are pretty tight (the instrumental parts). But most of the songs here are like the Doors getting caught doing mediocre to bad music. I'm sure some of their gigs were just like this if not worse. There's not much musically going on here but this will round out your Doors collection if you're a fan and Jim Morrison will give you an excellent laugh.

Anyway, the two songs I know already are "Bustin' Out For Rosey" (featuring a funky rhythm and a chorus that reminds me of the Bee Gee's) and "You Told Me That You Loved Me" which finishes off nicely with a couple minutes of solid guitar jamming. I like what I know so far.

Tommy bolin was an influence and contemporary of Jeff Beck during his Jazz Fusion years. Other reviewers provide excellent history on tommy bolin.
If you enjoy this music and want to find some excellent modern guitar try some Warren Haynes with Gov't Mule (high and mighty). Mule's music does not have Bolin's fusion side, but does provide contemporary quality guitar rock.

1. Bustin' Out for Rosey-5/5-Very good guitar solo.
2. Sweet Burgundy-5/5-Bolin sings in a very sensual voice; The guitar is amazing.
3. Post Toastee-5/5-Probably the best song on the album. The title (and the song itself) refer to how his friend o'ded on heroin, which he himself would later do.
4. Shake the Devil-5/5-More great guitar.
5. Gypsy Soul-5/5-This song's music goes perfect with the title & lyrics.
6. Someday Will Bring Our Love Home-5/5-(No Comment)
7. Hello, Again-5/5-Could easily be called a beautiful song.
8. You Told Me That You Loved Me-5/5-Kind of jazzy. Really good though.

His style lodged somewhere between neo-soul revivalism and the ongoing tradition of love-man blandishment, Avant makes a good showing on his third album, Private Room. Recalling Marvin Gaye in lush style, a nod to "Sexual Healing" (the whispers on "Heaven"), and even by name in one lyric ("Hooked"), he posits a derivative but pleasing stance. Most surprising is "Have Some Fun," which backs its affirmative message with an inventive, piano-led track, a snaking melody line, and a stack of vocals that tease the ear. Not everything here rises to that immaculate level, but never does the music rest on anything less than imaginative craft. Avant's love for sound and emotion show throughout this hour-long performance--one that R&B lovers won't regret picking up. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Avant what happened? Buy Avant's "Avant" self titled cd instead!.......2005-08-12
So here is The Run Down:
Avant's Private Room, needs to remain in a private room where very few people will go because they would leave almost immediately. Ok its not that bad, but its bad enough to say DO NOT BUY. I originally found out about Avant by accident, one day i was listening to music samples on Yahoo! Music and typed in a song and got Avant as a result instead. I decided to listen to it and was like WOW he's good. So I went out and bought his self titled cd AVANT; which I loved! I seriously enjoyed almost every song, which is rare. So I figure most likely he was consistent with his other cds so I bought Private Room and Ecstasy both which are mediocre.
The ONLY good Avant cd is his self titled cd AVANT buy that one instead. Dont get me wrong, there are a FEW good songs on this cd but not many, I only have 4 songs from this cd on my mp3 player because the others ones in "my opinion" are NOT good or worth while.

Countless copycats have landed on the bandwagon since Josh Davis's debut, Endtroducing..., wreaked havoc in the dance and hip-hop world. But Davis, a.k.a. DJ Shadow, kept on top of his game with various collaborations--Blackalicious, U.N.K.L.E., Cut Chemist--and superlative 12-inches like "High Noon" and "Pre-Emptive Strike."Now, a full six years later, he's back with a follow-up that is every bit as impressive as his debut, albeit in a different way. Once again, the producer has pushed his sampler to the limits, but this time he's brought with it a deeper, hungrier, more bad-ass spirit that's rarely found in modern dance music. There's a fabulous '80s vibe throughout (principally on tracks like "Monosylabik" and "You Can't Go Home Again"), along with the expected forays into b-boy culture (check the growling, massive "Treach Battle Break" and the funky-ass "Mashin' on the Motorway"). While it's identifiably Shadow, it ain't Endtroducing...Part 2. It is, however, a worthy and imaginative follow-up, with humor, wisdom, and musical understanding aplenty. --Paul Sullivan
Customer Reviews:
"Decent" Comes to Mind.......2007-05-12
"Monosylabik", with its geek-out sampler-effects extravaganza does not belong on any respectable album. Not only is the track an annoyance to the ears, it just goes to show that maybe Davis' music is all about sound or technique over substance.
"Mashin' on the Motorway", again, filler and very out of place. I think this could have been a novelty B-Side but should have DEFINITELY been replaced with "100 Metre Dash" from the "Six Days" single. "Mashin'" just sounds immature with its failed attempts at comedic road rage.
Those are the only two tracks I can say are bad. The rest of the songs are solid, just not album material.
The bookends (Letters from Home) are there for concept purposes, though you'd be hard-pressed to dissect any sort of concept in the body of the album. So instead of adding to the experience, they distract and are constant skips.
What works?
"Fixed Income", "Giving Up the Ghost" and the 2-part "Mongrel... Meets his Maker" are all showstoppers. An album created around those pieces may have been able to match 'Endtroducing...' in impact, though not in relevance and depth.
I admit, my expectations were ridiculously high back in '02 when I picked this up. It has since been five years and the album gets very little to no rotation. There is no mood, so I steer away from putting it in for the two tracks at a time that may fit how I feel that day. Instead, I take the highlights and include them on compilations where they DO stand out as opposed to sound desperately stranded as they do on this album.

Rarely have used words like "powerful" or "moving" with a hip-hop artist, but they apply here. "Blood On the Motorway" hits hard, and is the centerpiece of the album in my opinion. It touches a chord in the listener, and is truly one of those songs that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Yanni can be likened to 1970s rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer. There are several basic parallels, especially in this orchestra-enhanced concert reworking of his more propulsive, anthemic compositions. Yanni, who in concert sometimes strikes the rapturous two-keyboard "iron-cross" pose that served as one of Keith Emerson's trademarks, uses, as ELP did, classical and world-music influences to elevate pop-inclined compositions to more sophisticated levels. He then turbocharges the whole concoction with bold strokes of prog-rock bravura to give his finest pieces a dramatic, chest-swelling, larger-than-life impact. A key difference between the two acts, of course, is Yanni possesses a much stronger romantic streak, plus he refrains from attacking his keyboards with sharp objects. At his best, Yanni strikes incendiary sparks with the driving, celebratory quality of his music, and this production, culling some of the best audio moments from his much-televised 1993 concert performance in Athens, is a most appealing showcase. Yanni can sometimes strike the sonic hammer as forcefully as a Greek god ("Santorini," "Keys to Imagination") and, on this album at least, gives even overtly romantic pieces ("One Man's Dream," "Swept Away") a warmly masculine flair. Beautifully arranged and recorded; a pleasure to experience. --Terry WoodCustomer Reviews:

Wonderful IntroTo Mehdi.......2006-04-14
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Yanni fan, I find Mehdi to be a wonderful addition to this CD. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.
