Product Description
An unsurpassed milestone in European/African fusion, this is a head-on collision between traditional Central African vocals and uncompromising analog electronics. Resulting from a torrid encounter between Zairean singer Bony Bikaye, Algerian-born French composer Hector Zazou and mad scientists CY1, this album was acclaimed by the international press, has influenced scores of artists and remains astonishingly fresh. Guest musicians include Marc Hollander and Fred Frith. Originally released in 1983, this reissue is packaged in a slipcase. Crammed Discs.

Superlative Performances.......2007-03-07
Superlative Duo in superlative music - really sums up these performances. The Debussy is sublime from the "Six Epigraphes antiques" the exotic,"Lindaraja", the spirited,"Marche Ecossaise",the charming, "Petite Suite", to the modern abstract,"En Blanc et noir". The Ravel is as ravishing and the music's strong linear sweep is revealed in two pianos or four hands(with Ravel's "Frontispice" for two piano with one hand - an unusual combination). This is music that brightens up your aural realm!

My most cherished musical find.......2005-06-23
I am a 20-year-old piano major who was told to listen to this CD by one of my professors when I was trying to decide what to study as a major four-hands work. Since I am on a "student budget," I decided to listen to the college library's copy of this CD before buying, but immediately after I had listened to the Bartók, I knew that I had to have this CD.
Argerich belongs to a very elite group of pianists--Gieseking, Arrau, Serkin, and Backhaus are honoured to have her as their peer. Despite the daunting scale of the task, Freire and Kovacevich prove that they are worthy of sharing the stage on this CD, and the chemistry between them and Argerich (which several other reviewers have mentioned as well) is truly amazing. The Mozart is presented with clarity, beauty, emotion, and the irresistable charm that Argerich brings to so many of her Classical Period interpretations. The Rachmaninoff is a powerful, thrilling performance, and the Bartók is dark, deep, and carefully crafted without losing the sense of spontaneity.
But while the other reviewers have already focused on these points, I am truly baffled that few have mentioned Argerich and Freire's electrifying performance of Lutoslawski's Paganini Variations. The piece is based on the same Paganini capriccio (Op 1, No 24 in a minor) that Rachmaninoff and Brahms have used, but unlike with Rachmaninoff or Brahms, Lutoslawski follows the same overall structure as the original Paganini capriccio, to great effect. Lutoslawski shows great understanding of the piano and the use of off-beat sforzandi, doubled octaves, and glissandi at the climax create an amazing effect which Argerich and Freire fully capture here. The balance is impeccable, even during the near impossible middle section where Argerich plays a rumbling succession of fifths and fourths in rapid sixteenth-notes. The tempo choices, use of dynamics, and changes in colour and texture are right-on. After hearing two other recordings of this piece (by Nosowska and Halska), I can say with confidence that this recording blows the others out of the water. It is the definitive recording of this modern masterpiece.
I can't afford to buy many CDs, but this is one CD that I would pay twice the price for. I only wish that, a few months from now, my duet partner and I are able to play that piece half as well as Argerich and Freire do here.
Best Bartok EVER !.......2005-04-27
This Cd not only has a great selection, but it also contains BOTH versions of Bartok's works for two pianos and percussion.
The performanceof the Concerto for two pianos, percussion and orchestra is by far the best I've ever heard. Included is an excellent performance of its Sonata earlier version. Also is the best performance of Ravel's La Valse on CD in its original duo piano format. This is an extremely great buy !
Great Duo Piano Album.......2002-08-02
This is a stunning album of duo piano favorites. Marta Argerich is one of the finest pianists currently on the concert circuit. On this complilation CD she teams with two other pianists to perform exciting renditions of some of the classic pieces in the duo piano genre. Standouts include the amazing performance of the Bartok Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion. This may be my favorite performance of this piece. It is savage and violent in the first movement, deeply mysterious in the second and playful and life-affirming in the final movement. The performance of the Lutoslawski Variations makes a good case for this work as a worthy successor to other variation sets on this marvelous Paganini Capriccio. The performance of La Valse is the first one that I've heard that doesn't make me yearn for the orchestra. And the Rachmaninov is spectacular.
Why only four stars then? Well, given the wealth of material for duo pianists, I find the inclusion of the Bartok Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra to be mistaken at best. This work is a recasting of the Sonata heard on the second disc, and it's a poor recasting at that. The propulsive power of the Sonata is smoothed out by the orchestra, and the added string lines don't really do anything for the piece at all. Better selections might have been the Mozaqrt Sonata for Two Pianos or the Stravinsky Two Piano music. I know that Argerich has recorded the Mozart for Phillips, so I am baffled by this programming choice.
All in all though, you can't go wrong. And at a Phillips Twofer price, this disc is a pleasant addition to your collection indeed!
A 'sudden' Argentine fan.......2001-03-24
This is the very first Marta Argerich CD I've bought and frankly I'm very impressed. The Rachmaninov Suite is simply mind boggling - I'm sure its the sort of performance Rachmaninov only dreamed of w/o ever expecting it to become a reality!! Of course the real chemistry here is Argerich & Freire together - who can possibly beat that! Another 'revealing' piece is the Lutoslawski -short but very exciting (also curiously similar to Rachmaninov's version of the same period). Everything else -though not quite so amazing - was wonderfull too. I STRONGLY recommend this one!
WHO... IS KEITH EMERSON.......2000-08-29
This is a double CD of SUPERVIRTUOSO duo piano playing featuring a lot of music you will not easily find at a bargain price. Argerich is one of the legends of the classical piano world and her collaborators (Kovacevich and Freire)are amazing pianists in their own right, more than up to the formidable challenge of playing alongside her.
My particular favorites include the savagely intense Bartok with percussion, the fantastically subtle and atmospheric Debussy piece "En Blanc et Noir," and the famously melodic "Carnival of Animals" by Saint Saens." The TOP HONORS, however are reserved for the INCREDIBLE version of Ravel's "La Valse," easily the best ever. Argerich and Kovacevich just soar into the stratosphere on this one, electrifying the air molecules into magical disentropy.

great performances of mostly rarely played masterpieces.......2001-04-17
It is often said that playing French music is almost like speaking French - you have to be a native French to do it convincingly. Despite many examples to the contrary, there is something magical in the way French artists perform French music. The more relatively recent examples are Jean-Ives Thibaudet, and in this instance - the sisters Labeque. Except for some mannerisms here and there I less agree with, particularly in the charming Petite Suite (something that afflicted also their performance of Bizet's Jeux D'enfants in a rather cheesy TV setting) - the performances, both technically and interpretation-wise, are wonderful. And the music is superb. En Blanc et Noir has it all - the amazing span of atmospheres and colours, so typical of the late Debussy. The two out of the three orchestral Nocturnes (Nuages and Fetes), arranged for two pianos by Ravel (who usually orchestrated rather than reduced) lose very little, if at all, in this piano version. The Six Epigraphes Antiques are the most shamefully neglected of all Debussy's piano works. There's a version for 2 hands, arranged by the composer. These late, meditative pieces deserve much more exposure, and the sisters Labeque do them justice. This is a wonderful CD.

Almost a century has passed since the premieres of Pelleas et Melisande and La mer, and Debussy's place as one of the greatest and most original composers in history is fully assured. Even so, the arrival of this extraordinarily fine complete survey of his chamber music, from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, is cause for celebration because it glorifies a part of his output that is too often overlooked. The works are nicely grouped on three CDs: the late (and great) works for mixed forces on disc one; the early works (including the String Quartet in G minor) on disc two; and the two-piano works (some early, some late) on disc three. The renditions, recorded between 1995 and 1999 in various venues in New York and Los Angeles, are excellent across the board, with wonderful work from clarinetist David Shifrin, the Society's artistic director, as well as regulars Ransom Wilson, Nancy Allen, Paul Neubauer, Anne-Marie McDermott, and Ani Kavafian. The legendary Lee Luvisi joins McDermott in the music for piano duet, and André Watts delivers a star turn as pianist in the Petite piece and Premiere rhapsodie for clarinet and piano. Among the highlights are a soulful Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp, and a marvelous realization of the Quartet in G minor from the Orion String Quartet. Delos provides outstanding recorded sound and makes this generous compilation available at less than $10 per disc. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
Not quite top notch.......2006-06-02
Sorry to disagree with some of the other reviewers, but I cannot give this CD the highest rating. The most important pieces here are the three sonatas, and for my taste they come across a bit heavy and rigid (as opposed to being light and flowing). The balance also seems to be off in these three pieces - in the violin and cello sonatas the piano is really more of an accompaniment, rather than an equal partner, but here it seems to be treated as an equal. In the sonata for harp, viola, and flute, the viola is given too much prominence, whereas as it should be flitting in the background and blending with the other instruments; indeed one should not be overly aware of the presence of the viola, even though it plays a crucial role in the rich tapestry of sound created here. It's one of Debussy's strokes of genius, but this imbalance lessens the effectiveness of this sonata, which should be full of air and light and magic. At least some of these problems may be attributed to the engineer. Why do these recordings seem so dry? The sonatas sound as if they were recorded in a closet. If you are looking for an introduction to Debussy's chamber music, the CD is fine, but if you want to experience the real thrill of his late, great sonatas, go for the Boston Symphony Players version. The balance and acoustics are far superior, and the musicians seem to have a better feel for the way this delicate music should flow.
A Musical Impressionist.......2001-08-24
It is hard to know what to say about this 3 CD collection by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The performances are impeccable throughout. The music is wonderful. I feel as if I was able to wander for three hours through the impressionist section of Musee D'Orsey in Paris without the crowds to bother me. Chamber music is often relegated to categories of the "lesser works" by various composers. I have found that usually inaccurate in as much as this form is a sort of distillation of the ideas in the so-called "major works." For example the "Syrinx," composed in 1913, and played here by Ransom Wilson is such a familiar melody that you respond immediately, even if you wonder where you heard it before.
Debussy composed in a sort of transition period. Music was evolving from the rigors of the 19th Century into the less restrictive era of the 20th century. You can hear echoes of Jazz and other modern forms herein. I really recommend this collection.
Wonderful..........2001-07-16
I must say, this is a wonderful CD. The performers of the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society are top quality, and they play these difficult to interepet pieces beautifully. I encourage anyone to buy this, it includes some of his most amazing works (the sonatas, the string quartet, and others) there's something for everyone.
SUPERB DEBUSSY.......2000-12-28
What a terrific way to introduce yourself to the "smaller" works of Claude Debussy---or perhaps to re-introduce yourself. Here is every piece of chamber music this giant of the 20th century wrote and in memorable performances on three CD's & almost three full hours of gorgeous music. There are even some star performers in the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center: pianist Andre Watts, flutist Ransom Wilson, harpist Nancy Allen to name just three. It's hard to choose favorites, but the "Premiere Rapsodie" for clarinet and piano & "Syrinx" for flute & the best version I've ever heard of the "String Quartet in G Minor" head my list. I have one minor quibble: I understand full well that music companies are now trying to help save our environment and, thus, trying to come up with new ways to package CD's in wrappings that are easily recyclable. But this flimsy, cardboard package from which one of more of the CD's is always slipping out, has simply got to be bettered.
An excellent collection.......2000-07-20
The Delos 3-CD set of
(DE 3167) is perhaps the second most beautiful compilation in my collection. For this not quite but nearly monumental collection, clarinetist David Shifrin acted as Artistic Director and gathered a small constellation of artists to participate: pianists Andre Watts, Anne-Marie McDermott, and Lee Luvisi; violinists Joseph Silverstein and Ani Kavafian; cellist Fred Sherry; and flutist Ransom Wilson.
Among the longer pieces are the Sonatas "for Cello and Piano," "for Flute, Viola and Harp," and "for Violin and Piano," the "String Quartet" and the "Piano Trio in G Major." the third CD is devoted to Debussy's piano music: "En blanc et Noir," "six epigraphes antiques," and "Petite Suite." There are also six shorter selections to round out the program. While most collection probably have all or most of these, I think at the special price with which this set is marketed, it would make a lovely addition, not to mention a terrific and thoughtful gift.
By the way, the most beautiful set I own is the now out of print 4-CD set on EMI of music by Rodrigo--in case you wondered.

Customer Reviews:
A shinning beacon in the middle of a dark night!.......2005-03-21
Nowadays many pianists think -mistakenly- that to fill a big hall, demands to produce an enormous sound amount of sound, hammering the instrument with all their mighty. That conception prevailed during the second half of the XIX Century with that advertised announce: "an authentic keyboard lion". Casadesus was so reliable about the sheerness of the sound that literally astonished the whole world with his apparent simplicity, facing such dissimilar composers as Beethoven and Ravel, and being so famous performer in both at the same time.
He was owner of an illimitable energy and prodigious generosity. From his unique fingers. Chopin's Third Ballade never sounded better. His Ravel's Concerto with Ormandy for the left hand and his Beethoven `s Fourth Piano Concerto with Van Beinum still maintain a status character between the connoseurs. His Scarlatti is played with the same dedication of a filigree builder: the exquisiteness in its major level.
His great musicianship will remain through the years, due it was born from the inner soul. That' s the divine clue of the real artist. He was not a superb French artist. His grandness is far beyond a simple nationality. The actual generation of many extremely self worried by only the technician aspect should search and take their time to listen this outstanding and supreme master.
He will never be forgotten by those who personally admired his craftsmanship and for those music lovers of the future!
The Refined Elegance of Casadesus.......2001-03-23
Dear Readers, I'm sure that this compilation of Mr Casadesus' art is a valuable treasure. Unlike some of the selections from the output of various artists in this collection, these two cd's are the epitome of Mr Casadesus' oeuvre. Every work is wonderfully realized and his masculine approach never borders on being earth bound. Especially wonderful is the Ravel Concerto which has to be heard to be believed. It is dazzling and very riveting. Suspending time is every pianist's ideal. And beautiful playing such as this does.. Strongly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Exquisite Debussy from an underrated pianist.......2000-09-13
I bought this set because it included most of the pieces missing from my Debussy piano collection, and the Penguin Guide rated it fairly high. I've been listening to it frequently ever since and can only wonder why Haas is rarely mentioned alongside other great Debussians like Gilels, Arrau, Roge et al. The Philips sound is clean and full and these performances, especially of the Etudes, leave nothing to be desired. No dreamy indulgence here, just penetrating exploration of Debussy's unique tonal world. At this price, the complete duo-piano music (in which Haas is joined by Noel Lee) is a bonus! Don't hesitate on this one, even if it duplicates some other Debussy performances you own -- Debussy's music is so subtle that an alternative performance is virtually a new piece of music.
The low price is an attraction, but..........2000-04-28
I bought this 2-CD set because it was onsale..... Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed when I played it. The selection itself is good, it contains the complete Etudes, En blanc et noir, and some other not-so-famous works. However, the performance is no match to the scope. You know that it was played in accordance with the composition, but beyond this you don't feel touched by the playing. I am still enchanted by Debussy's unique style, and will still buy CDs of his music, however I might look for something by other performers.
