Good, Relatively Unknown Series.......2007-01-30

"Fueld For the Future" was a mixed set done on Compost label by various nu-jazz/broken beat dj's and producers in the early part of this decade. There were four of them that I am aware of - one done by acid-jazz masters UFO, another by DJ Spinna, this one by KJM and another by Yukihiro Fukutomi. The concept's pretty much the same... just spinnin' good tunes from that time frame with styles that blend the old with the new and give a taste of where the label and several artists are going in the future - particularly on the Compost label. No surprise I picked this one up some time ago... it's Kyoto Jazz Massive after all!

And this is a pretty good mixed set. DJing isn't always about crossfading beats - KJM proves that here by the way they blend the right, overall, sound. The cd starts off with a neat Les Gammas track, although solid, Les Gammas tended to be a little too repetitious with sampled lyrics. "Voo Doo jazz Rapture" sounds like vintage KJM (it's actually by Anthony Nicholson) with the percussion patterns. Then you've got a dreamy cut by Minus 8 (hopefully he returns to this sound). All in all, this is a buffet of Compost beats and hits. A few others that are amazing are "Carajillo" by Truby Trio. I still remember when I got into that track back in 2000... it has a real cool energy to it with hte drums crashing about. "Eclipse" also features, and it's a neat bossa track by Kyoto Jazz Massive themselves... check the keywork by Hajime with their beats. Beanfield's "The Season" was also a good cut to add on. The guitar bit at the end of the cd on "Don't Waste My Love" by Les Gammas was class.

I liked this one, and I'd recommend it if it's easily found and not over the top expensive. It's a great mix of cuts that show you what was happening on the Compost Records label from 2000-2002, featuring their artists. The disc's got energy and takes me back. Not all of the songs grabbed me, however - after "Carajillo", I didn't care much for "Africa" or "Close to Greatness". But none of that's enough to blow this one completely off. It's a great mixed set. Also, if you like this, remember there are at least three more (and there's a box set of all of them) done in the style of the other dj's (some more house heavy, one more jazz influenced). You may also like the Trust the DJ or DJ Kicks series' as well.
