Bombay1 are old friends Kurt Dahlke and Stoya, both from Kraftwerk's home town of Dusseldorf. Dahlke prefers to be known as Pyrolator ('Because he likes to set things on fire,' explains his musical partner, deadpan) and has an impeccable background in German alternative music. A founding member of D.A.F., the original electro-punk band who laid a blueprint later followed by everyone from Skinny Puppy to Nine Inch Nails, he left after one album and formed Der Plan. Because their lyrics are in German, Der Plan aren't much known outside their own country but at home their amalgamation of Residents-style surrealism and Visage-esque electro-pop garnered a strong following throughout the 1980s. Since then Dahlke has been running the futuristic Ata Tak label (home to Oval and Holger Hiller, amongst others) as well as producing the next wave of post-rock electronic acts such as To Rococo Rot and Kreidler. Dahlke is the man who manipulates the machines in Bombay1. Gronland. 2005.

Hard to find but worth the effort.......2000-12-20

This recording is important for a number of reasons: it has Korngold himself conducting some of the selections, it has rarely-heard selections from "Das Wunder der Heliane" and "Die Kathrin," and it has marvelous singers, particularly Gundula Janowitz and Anton Dermota. The sound is rough at times and the editing a little clumsy (from the originals apparently, not the transfer to CD), but there are meltingly beautiful cuts here. My favorites are both from "Die Kathrin": the Act I duet sung by Janowitz and Rudolf Christ, and the "Wanderlied" from Act III, sung incomparably by Anton Dermota. The Dermota cut alone makes this recording a treasure. Korngold conducts it, and he allows Dermota to add a haunting wordless postlude to the marvelous melody. Dermota's voice seems to go on forever at the end--you'll want to set your CD player to repeat this cut several times. Enjoy.
