4 out of 5 stars The Joys of Courtship, Laos Rasta style.......2005-06-10

It's difficult to communicate why this CD works so well. There is nothing really groundbreaking in any of the individual elements combined in these tracks. The bass lines are pure driving dub, the percussion is rather unadventurous (at least for Jah) 90s rave, the vocals are traditional Southeast Asian Molam (which, thanks to the hard consonants in Indo-Chinese languages, gives the vocals an intense rhythmic character, but with a greater sense of melody than hip-hop), and the production techniques are old-school dub.

But somehow the sum of all these elements is vibrant and fresh in a way that transcends the source genres of dub, world music and electronica.

Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell have pushed the envelope of dub for sometime now, but never has it stretched quite like this. The songs retain greater melodic coherence than more traditional dub. Despite the overlaying of traditional Asian vocal styles with western dance rhythms, the results are more cohesive than the usual world-music-remix track that normally results from such unions.

My suggestion: go to iTunes and download the track "Lam Phouthay." This track contains all of the joyful energy and the elements that run throughout the CD. If you like this one, you'll love the CD.

Nothing groundbreaking, just really enjoyable. Only a couple of less satisfying tracks keep this from being a 5 star outing.

4 out of 5 stars Jah Wobble does it again!.......2003-12-19

I've been a fan of Jah Wobble's music since the very first Public Image Ltd. album. The man is just a master of the low-down bass groove.

Wobble has been one of the few musicians who's been able to make truly cathartic "World Music" that successfully blends musical traditions from various parts of the globe. From the start he developed an enthralling fusion of Jamaican dub-style bass with Arabic/Middle-Eastern rythms and melodies. Then he added strands of Spanish gypsy music and vocal stylings from India and Pakistan. Almost always, Wobble avoided falling into the cloying territory of Deep Forest, Enigma, Enya, and the like.

With this album, Wobble expands his palette to include the musical traditions of Laos, and once again, he does it right. If you, like me, love listening to music from other cultures but often yearn to hear those styles pumped up with a bit of Western electric punch, then Wobble is your man. So many try to do it, so few succeed.

This is one of those albums that my brain gets stuck on. I just keep finding myself hitting the repeat button when it comes to an end.

4 out of 5 stars Wobble meets East or "Laos in the House".......2000-10-11

Jah Wobble does it again. On the latest offering from his own 30 Hertz label, Wobble and his band of merry men, the Invaders of the Heart, set down a monster bottom end in support of a quartet of Parisian based Laotian singers. This isn't a groove; it's a trench of bass, drums, pipes, and khene, a mouth organ. A perfect dub based platform for these singers to take off in a joyous call and response style known in Laos as Molam. Even if you don't speak Laotian, the obvious delight the musicians had in creating this record is infectious; you can't help but find yourself moving to the music and singing along. A definite candidate for a world music grammy.

    5 out of 5 stars rhytmic pyrotechnics.......2000-06-28

Over 20 years ago while listening to a US radio station called KBOO-FM I heard a solo piece of Laotian music (voice and a truly haunting instrument I later learned was called a khene). This was a music which reached deep into my being. There was something very personal and intimate about this music, almost as if the musician and I were sitting together.

Full of emotion, from exultant to heartbreaking, the sensibilities of this music are tapped by Wobble with this release. Not solely for the above qualities, but also for the superb level of musicianship of the Molam Lao group. While I sometimes found Wobble's bass grooves on this release lacking the same level of passion he attained in earlier releases (I am particularly fond of some of his work with Nicky Skopelitis), some stunning mergings of styles occur here. Unlike with Deep Forest (whose first album is a travesty, at least if you've ever heard some of the original recordings they sampled), I sense a real connection happening between musicians in these recordings. Clive Bell, who wrote the liner notes and appears on a couple tracks, speaks of this when he mentions how at the conclusion of each song mix the entire studio would burst into applause.

This is an exciting album and I'm quite pleased with the purchase.

Wobble's album also mentions that Molam Lao have a release on the Nimbus label entitled 'Music from Southern Laos' (NI5401). KBOO, by the way, is still going strong and available on the net.

Jah Wobble,in his continuing mission to couple ethnic pop music to his own circular,rocking,deep-bass groove-lines,presents Laotian electric country/blues filtered through Wobble's desire to make you love this music the way he does. The results? An enchanted journey to the valley of the good groove.
