4 out of 5 stars Respect.......2007-05-07

A must have for any real Social D and Mike Ness fan. It is a little different after being accustomed to Social Distortion albums, but listen to the music and don't focus on the genre. I'm a fan of many types of music, a huge fan of Johnny Cash, and I am always glad to see someone follow their heart instead of what is popular. "Under the Influences" is a testimony to those who came before us, so don't buy it expecting that Social D edge. Buy it because you want to hear some good classic songs sung by a legend.

5 out of 5 stars REAL STUFF.......2005-12-20

It's pretty bad when it takes a punk rocker to make a great country album. But that's exactly what happened and thank god it did.
"Let the jukebox keep on playing" is one of th ebest country cover songs of all time.
Keep up the good work Mike.

4 out of 5 stars this isn't regular social d.......2005-12-12

mike on his own rocks, but this has a huge "country" type feel to it, if you're not into johnny cash.. or willing to go beyond a punker boy sound.. this isn't for you. mike's voice still rocks, but the country feel might turn some fans off. for those that liked cheating at solitair this is a good bet. this would be a great addition/gift for anyone that likes country rock

5 out of 5 stars Old school country with an edge.......2005-11-29

Mike Ness' Under the influences is just that, true influences for every style of music. When I bought this cd the second thing I did was buy all of the origional material and it all blew my mind. Every song made to honor the origional artist. Remaking the likes of Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, and the Clash is a hard task for anyone, a task that should not be taken litely. This cd brings more than just good music it brings an added repect for the songs of the past, the songs that helped make the music of today. Overall a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars kickin country covered.......2005-11-24

Mike's done a great job of introducing some old school classics to a new generation of punks. Teaching them that not all country is bad. Forget the Garths & Shanias & give a listen to some true tales of hard luck & heartbreak. He's covered the man in black on a S.D. album so to hear this was a great boot in the ass. I also picked up another great CD of cover songs by Luke the drifter himself called Timeless, a tribute to Hank Williams that would fit in the player right along side this one.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2004-07-06

I have been listening to Rusted Root for quite a while now, and somehow had never listened to this CD. I never knew what I was missing. This CD is great. It not only has a great version of Send Me On My Way, but the Cat Turned Blue is amazing. The song Won't Be Long is one of my personal RR favorites now. I would recommend this CD to any RR fan.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2004-06-13

in no way can one classify the sound of rusted root into one genre. it is unique, so much so that i'll be redundant and say it's very unique. if you haven't heard their music before, imagine taking an african, an american or englishman influenced by rock & roll, one from the land of a billion people, two women with a feminist spirit and a shaman, give them instruments with which they are highly skilled, and let them play. that will sound something like rusted root. who gives a feck about the lyrics?, albeit they aren't bad.

5 out of 5 stars Best acoustic jam band.......2004-03-13

I'm probably biased writing this review since I grew up listening to Rusted Root in Pittsburgh. I've never heard any band like them and that is a rare thing. I'm on my fourth copy of this CD, having worn out the others. This CD never gets old. The Root strayed from their original raw acoustic sound in future albums. When I Awoke is their first outing on a major label, it's good but not great. Crual Sun is great. Just buy it and you'll see.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rusted Root -- REMASTERED!.......2003-11-26

Ah Rusted Root! A good old-fashioned jam band, unaltered by commercial popularity. This newly remastered version of their original, self-produced album reminds us why we love this band so much. A definate keeper for anyone who loves RR and hasn't gotten their first album yet. And my personal recommendation -- if you love this band -- go see them live. I've seen them twice, and they are by far and away the best band I have ever seen live. Amazing drum breaks, great banter, and music that frees your soul.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2003-04-05

As an electronic music fan, I've always been a stickler for recording quality and a technically refined sound. Well guess what? This disc has neither and is about the most charming thing I own. It hasn't left my changer since I got it. The songs are very rough - many of them have seen more refined versions appear on later Root albums - but nothing except perhaps for When I Woke has the same kind of jam band charm as this disc.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd counterpoint.......2007-06-01

I don't write reviews for anything on Amazon, but I am this time to back up what was said in the (at this time) 2 positive reviews and as a counterpoint to the one negative review. One of the positive reviews states you'll either get it or you won't; obviously the reviewer who did not like it does not get it. In his short review he states that this is "light jazz" and goes on to lament his inability to stop time and live in a very small dimension (i'm paraphrasing a bit). While there are tracks that could be played on light jazz stations, the same could be said of some of Miles' or Coltranes' ballads, but that doesn't make them light jazz, just as this is not. It is a shame that Amazon still does not have her 2 2007 releases available. I had to go the Anzic Label website to buy them. You won't be sorry in purchasing her music as she weaves a lot into her playing that -yes, not everyone will get.

5 out of 5 stars She's A Star.......2007-05-13

I have been reading a lot about Ms. Cohen. She seems to have been making some history recently: she is the only female horn player (and the only Israeli) ever to headline at the Village Vanguard. She is the only person ever to get citations in 5 categories in the annual Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll (2007). She is the only woman ever chosen as "Up and coming jazz musician" of the year by the global Jazz Journalists Association...and the only person ever to get the aformentioned nod and win a best instrumentalist category (clarinet in her case). Then...there are feature articles about her in places like the Washington Post. She's playing at the Newport Jazz festival this year. All the foregoing struck me as a lot of smoke...for there not to be any fire. So I bought her three albums as a leader and the Waverly Seven (of which she is a member) album "YO! BOBBY". Now.. I understand the kudos. She is an extraordinary musician. She has a warm, solid tone on all 5 of her instruments. Her improvising is extraordinarily creative yet artfully restrained....as opposed to what I hear from the legions of Brecker, Potter, Coltrane would be clones out there. Her original compositions have something to say. I love her taste in cover tunes. I get it.

4 out of 5 stars a counterbalance.......2007-05-11

To be honest - I haven't heard this whole album - just the lengthy clips on the amazon listening station. But I was curious, having read strong notices in May 2007 in the New York Times - and her stuff is lovely - AND the one-star screed posted by the other reviewer is so far off base that I needed to post a counter-balance to that wrier's one-star notice, which has much more to do with his (?) personal biases than this music. This is fine contemporary jazz with heart, soul, wit, chops and verve.

1 out of 5 stars No Balls.......2007-05-07

This music is what would pass for "jazz" today, better known as "light jazz." I say, it has no "balls." The jazz I know, with roots in bebop, is much more vital, and hardly played today live. I don't see what the fuss is about, if there is any, unless it is the attempt of the record companies to promote a woman. No problem with women jazz players. They are around, but please, record companies, don't just try to promote the person. Wait until the music is ready. And don't call it jazz. Jazz, as such, is kinda dead. The best stuff is reissues.

5 out of 5 stars Enchantment by Chris Spheeris - meditation with a beat.......2006-06-30

I owned this as a tape and everytime I wanted to relax while driving, I put Enchantment on. It won't put you to sleep but it relaxes your soul...with some songs having a more uptempo beat, and others, just beautiful music. When I bought my new car, without a tape player, I immediately ordered the Enchantment CD. I could not imagine driving distances without the option of hearing this exquisite and melodic music.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleasant !.......2003-08-14

I heard this CD playing in a metaphysical store & along with the smell of the incense in the shop I felt this huge wave of relaxation go over me. I asked the store owner what the music was & ordered my copy right away. This is a DELIGHTFUL CD and I play it over & over. You would never get tired of hearing this. I play it a lot in the car when I am driving and it just melts away the traffic frustrations. If you want something that will really make you "unwind" this will do it. I'm going to get more of this music.

5 out of 5 stars Enchantment.......2002-08-04

My wife and I found this CD in Baltimore while dating. We fell in love with it in the store and have played it many, many times. It became such a part of lives that we used several tracks for our wedding. First Kiss really does take you back to that first kiss and takes you through all of the emotions.

One of the best CD's that we own. Nine years and we still listen to it regularly. It brings out the romantic in all of us. Give it a hundred stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2002-05-01

This CD is one of Chris Spheeris' best. The music is soothing and the quality is the best. I can listen to this CD over and over and never tire of it. Other people who hear it also say the same thing. Greta music when relaxing in the hot tub!

5 out of 5 stars It's Paul Vourdouris, not Roger........2002-01-31

This is the greatest team of musicians or our time!
Enough said.
Give this CD ten stars. Buy two copies and give one to your best friend.

Trust me, They will thank you over and over again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent set. Look for the 3-disc version though........2006-07-13

This is a great set. I really can't stress that enough. Generally speaking, if it's from Bargrooves, you really can't go wrong in the first place. Second, if it's got Jay Hannan with it, even better. Deep, pulsing, smooth, flowing, sexy. It's got it all. Everything you've come to expect. Very Hed Kandi circa the heyday of Mark Doyle, very Naked Music, very Petalpusher aka Miguel Migs. Beautiful, beautiful stuff.

Correction needs to be made here however. I guess the editorial reviewer above had Lazy Dog on the mind, but the "Ben" of Disc One is NOT Ben Watt. It's Ben Sowton of many, many, many Bargrooves series. He is, hands-down, amazing as well. If Ben Watt sees fit to go off and BUZZ about with flies (something I actually love by the way...his series that is), then you can't do any better then getting this Ben to take his place (if you're limiting yourself to Ben's that is).

At any rate, get this and quit thinking about it. I picked up the 3 disc version about the time of the WMC here in South Beach. It's gotten continual play ever since, pleasing all who have heard it. You'll enjoy it immensely as well if you dig the kind of vibe this caters to at all.

1 out of 5 stars Outstanding, and influencial person........2003-05-08

I've felt that this is was the best album from those Level 42 years. Most of the members are involved in some capacity. It features several strong grooving tracks like "Pictures" and "Essentials" and MF'ing "There is a Dog". I was fortunate to meet Mark and the guy's during the World Machine days. They were equally excited and supportive of thier Trace Elliot playing leader.

PS: check out Meshell N'degeocello and Chalklet.

4 out of 5 stars There is a God.......2000-09-15

I only have 2 regrets when it comes to Mark King - Firstly, that he and his co-stars ended Level 42. But equally as important, was that, during his 15 years as frontman of that band, King only recorded 1 solo album......well, thank god we at least got that - and you'll understand what I mean when you listen to it. Right from the start, the album cuts straight to the chase and the music is well and truely in your face with "The Essential"....a long and enthralling journey that saves the very best until last: the most incredible delivery of bass playing I have EVER heard in my entire life. Other tracks like, "Pictures on the Wall" and "There is a Dog" showcase King's creative excellence as a songwriter. Recorded when he was 25, Mark King's "The Essential" is a must for the serious music lover who demands quality. The only reason I gave it 4/5 and not 5/5, was because it has one fault; track four titled, "I Feel Free" which has been covered by other artists before and after this offering, but like many others, this version is not a masterpiece. Having said that, however, the album, overall is a dream....enjoy! Phil MURRAY

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!.......1999-04-18

Our fearless Level 42 bassist shows us that he can hold his own. With superb songwriting and the help of some old Level chums, this album is top -notch. Mark's playing is impecable (as always), and his Jaco-esque phrasing is apparent on "THE ESSENTIAL", and "THERE IS A DOG". As a fellow bassist Mark, you help give us a good name.

5 out of 5 stars Mark King Really is the King of Bass.......1998-11-11

Mark was the bassist/vocalist/songwriter for the band Level 42. He is a masterful Bassist and extremely versatile musician. I bought this CD several years ago at its first US release and Ive about worn it out. If you enjoy upbeat jazzy music you cannot go wrong here. Mark plays Bass guitar, guitar, keyboards, percussion & drums on this album. The first track, "The Essential is 18.5 min. long and exibits Marks versatile style and ability. Mark also has some of his Level 42 band-mates back him up on a few tracks. This CD is pure auditory heaven . You can't go wrong with this CD. There are'nt words to describe the way his music affects me. And if you like this, you will love Level 42 as well. I just ordered his New CD "One Man". I can't wait till it arrives. Enjoy.

    Album Description

Quality of the material here, that one is left with the distinct impression that there are no fillers on the album - every song seems to be a part of the overall jigsaw. Surreal, dreamlike acoustic guitar-led ballads change effortlessly into funky jazz

    5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!!!.......2007-04-25

Listening to this CD is like looking at an intricate tapestry. The layers and the depth pull you into Jen Gloeckner's world...and it is beautiful there. It takes more that one listen to hear everything going on here. It has stayed in my CD player since I got it. I'm looking forward to the next work of art.

    4 out of 5 stars Still Chirpin'!.......2004-10-12

Who knew the Crickets were still going strong, some 45 years after Buddy Holly died so tragically young? This CD is a revelation for me and a real joy. The musicianship and sound quality are flawless, and the guest list is impressive and eclectic: Eric Clapton, Nanci Griffith, Rodney Crowell, Graham Nash, John Prine, Bobby Vee (!), Vince Neil, Johnny Rivers and more. The song list is a revelation as well: the old Buddy Holly chestnuts are there ("That'll Be the Day", "Not Fade Away", "Well All Right", "Oh Boy"...) but so are some other songs that were big hits for others, like "I Fought the Law" (Bobby Fuller Four) and "More Than I Can Say" (Leo Sayer). This is great celebration of a venerable band, and virtually everyone collaborating does a splendid job. It's one of the best country-rock recordings I've heard in quite a while.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have on this year's list.......2004-08-11

The Crickets' new album ceases to amaze me. They hold their musicianship so well. On tracks like "Oh Boy" (John Prine) to That'll Be The Day (Rodney Crowell) to an old rare "Someone Someone" (Eric Clapton), this band takes it to the limit. Seeing them at House of Blues in LA on 8/4 was a magical treat. They were simply amazing!

here's a band that inspired The Beatles AND The Rolling Stones. True rock n' roll givin it as it is style - no bs overdubbing. Just good ole rock and roll with some stellar guest stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Well...All Right!.......2004-08-06

Having been one of the lucky few to catch the Crickets and their "Buddies" at the House Of Blues Sunset last night, I can tell you that these guys can still rock as hard as anyone. This is not so much a tribute album as it is a celebration of the career and influence of the Crickets, with and without Buddy Holly. The Crickets are not mere bystanders here, but are in the thick of each track, and there's nary a misfire in the bunch (Vince Neil?). Sonny Curtis, J.I. Allison, and Joe B. Mauldin..."The Crickets." Someday Buddy will get his band back, but right now, here on earth we're lucky enough to have them rocking the nights away. If they play a show anywhere near you, go see them - you won't regret it. Meanwhile, run to your nearest music store and pick up this wonderful recording!
