Album Description

Take classic hard rock tunes from the 70s and 80s by the likes of Kiss, Scorpions, Black Sabbath and others. Rearrange them with rich harmonies and pulsating grooves of swing, funk and Latin. Throw in fiery improvisations on hollowbody guitar, double-bass and drums. What do you get? The Alex Skolnick Trio. At age eighteen, Alex Skolnick became a guitar hero with the metal band Testament. A few years and several albums later, he went on to perform and study jazz in New York, earning a music degree. Now, the worlds of metal and jazz have come together. Hear the result on "Goodbye To Romance: Standards For A New Generation."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is the album I have been looking for, for years.......2005-10-18

I love both heavy metal and jazz, and I have been looking for a good confluence of the two. I've found some swingcore (Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Hipster Daddio & The Hand Grenades, Leslie Bell & The First Bang Band), but most of it never lived up to its potential. The Lukather/Carlton collaboration was good but also fell short, and Stanley Jordan's experiments were too tentative.

This, however, is terrific. Skolnick is a great guitar player with serious knoweldge of music theory. The arrangements are truly in the jazz idiom, with the requisite improvistational feel and the triad chord structure, but the melodies are metal all the way (if tamed a bit). I've been listening to this album a lot.

1 out of 5 stars I dream of Hairbands . . . ........2005-04-02

It came to me in a dream that I should get a big band together (like count basie's) and do covers of megadeth!

1 out of 5 stars This disgusts me........2005-03-21

His tone is ugly, there is no soul, he is just shredding scales with no melodic content. This is not jazz. I have a hard time writing this without cursing. I am almost ashamed to be a guitarist because of garbage like this.

5 out of 5 stars Alex Skolnick's solo offering rules!.......2004-04-20

After playing in two of the biggest and most important metal bands (Testament and Savatage) in the world, Alex Skolnick decided it was time to move on and explore different musical textures. Alex has always been so much more than just a typical metal guitarist who can shred his heart out. Even when he was in Testament, one of the leading forces of thrash metal, his sense of melody made him stand out among any other guitar player in the genre. His bluesy and jazzy feel became an indispensable part of his musical vision and it was clear that he would have to move on to broaden his horizons.

I bought Goodbye to Romance as soon as it was released in 2002 through Alex's independet label Skol Productions and was greatly pleased when I saw he'd taken the time to sign the CD for me. Upon reading his message in the booklet, I was even more intrigued than before. This isn't just an average cover album of a once-metal guitarist. While Alex covers and pays tribute to lots of rock and metal classics of bands including KISS, Aerosmith, Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, The Who and Black Sabbath, he also plays two of his own songs ("Skol Blues" and "Ofri"). Moreover the tunes sound nothing like the original versions, they are all re-worked and put into the framework of Alex's jazzy musical direction. The song patterns are quite different (and sometimes even more interesting) and rich with variety, melody and warmth.

This project took off the ground when Alex had a dream in which he heard a very beautiful melody and had to wake up. As he couldn't place the tune, he felt compelled to pick up his guitar and work it out, only to find the melody he'd heard was a jazzified version of Scorpions' "No One Like You" and the rest is history. He put together a great band employing two very talented young musicians: John Graham Davies (double bass) and Matt Zebroski (drums).

Miles Davis has always been a great influence on Alex's songwriting. This solo release also seems to follow the path opened up by Davis decades ago. The music here is unbelievably eclectic and borrows elements from rock, funk and blues. It's an amalgam of all of these textures centred around a strong jazzy background. It's very deeply constructed, yet it flows so naturally. The interplay between all the instruments gives the album its final shape.

The title Goodbye to Romance actually has a very special significance, because as we all know, the song "Goodbye to Romance" was a song on Ozzy's debut album with guitar god Randy Rhoads, who was one of Alex's idols and biggest influences. Back in the mid-90's Alex played with Ozzy for a handful of shows in England and felt deeply honoured about playing Randy's songs so when he decided to release his solo album he titled it after this tune. As stated in the booklet, it is commonly known that Randy was planning to eventually leave the band to pursue his classical music education, but was unable to due to his untimely passing. Alex, on the other hand, just like Randy, was bold enough to leave his rock stardom behind and went back to school for his music degree. Randy's spirit guided him through all the way.

This is one of my favourite instrumental albums ever and I wish Alex nothing but all the best in his future career. I know it must be hard to create something like this, but if he ever gets to put another solo album I'll be one of the first to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Alex Skolnick Rules!!!.......2003-10-13

I saw the trio perform live in Indy. IT WAS AWESOME... I remember Alex from back in the Testament days... It is great to see him doing something like this that he really loves. The show was great start to finish... A CD can never do justice to a live jazz concert... but this one is good. I got to hang out with Alex for a bit after the show. Truly an artist that appreciates his fans. I would highly recommend this treasure to jazz and metal fans alike.

The guitar blows you away, great rhythm great sound. Saw them live last night and ACTUALLY paid the $10 for the album (usually CD is given away free). This is just really innovative, chill music that you can't go wrong with. Check it out and tell me otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars That's the way the guitars should sound.......2006-01-07

Great cd. The sound of the guitars is exactly as it should be. The vocals are also very good. The songs are really touching. Slightly reminds "Red house painters".
Don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars wow. this is the one........2005-09-04

I loved their last couple cds, but this one is the one. The Red Thread really seem to have hit their groove on this one. Every song is meticulously crafted, but none sound alike. They have a sound of their own but incorporate so many influences. A must have.

4 out of 5 stars Could be their strongest album yet.......2005-09-01

This album has it's own sound. Some might say that it shares a musical space alongside artists like The Sadies, Calexico (but more upbeat) and the Pernice Brothers. Jason Lakis' vocals pull you right in and at times are reminiscent of Evan Dando. There is a good balance between up tempo -almost pop tunes, and the deeper dimensions of a slower introsepective.

This album could be the strongest of their three, with winners like "Wax Museum,"
"Ship in the Attic" and "Treasure Island."

Try not to get too excited about the title.'Cocaine...' is a decent odds and sods collection of the ex-MC 5 guitarist's work. The first four tracks,"If You're Goin' To The City",Bob Seger's "Heavy Music",title cut "Cocaine Blues" and the MC 5 gem "Kick Out The Jams" were pulled from a gig Wayne played at Dingwalls in London in 1978.The Captain Trip label had put out a disc with the entire show. The remaining tunes on 'Cocaine Blues' are so-so studio pieces that Kramer cut that same year.Pretty much aimed toward big-time MC5/Wayne Kramer fans.

    3 out of 5 stars MC 5 - 'Human Being Lawnmower:The Baddest&Maddest Of The MC 5' (Total Energy).......2006-03-29

Fourteen track compilation pretty much for the completists only. Not a bad collection,it's just that many long-time MC5 fans will likely already have most,if not all these cuts.Several that I liked best were the heavy rocker "Looking At You","Rama La Fa Fa Fa",the studio out-take for "American Ruse" and the 19-minute epic, drawn out "I'm Mad Like Eldridge Cleaver".Semi-recommended.However,I would first listen to sound clips off this disc where ever you could find some, then make your decision from there.

4 out of 5 stars Great One Disc Album.............2005-03-21

However the release of the new "Purity, Accuracy" 6 cd box renders this album pretty much obsolete. The music here is great and the sound quality is very good; but most, if not all, the tracks here are included in the box set. If you already own all the official releases, as well as the "Big Bang: Best Of" album, my advice would be to take a pass here and save your bucks for the "Purity" box. If you're on a tight budget and just need more MC5, then this release will satisfy.

5 out of 5 stars Brothers & Sisters, the MC5!.......2003-02-28

Everyone is familiar by now with the legendary legacy of the MC5. As agit-prop band for the White Panther Party, they smashed the unstated taboo against an overt political stance within a rock 'n' roll framework. Subsequent bands like Clash, the D.K.'s, and R.A.T.M. owe much to these trailblazers.
My husband, who was down with the White Panthers when he was a kid, points to this collection as perhaps the best from the John Sinclair archives. I agree. Certainly the sound is far better than usual, with some terrific live outtakes from Jams. I Believe To My Soul is a standout, along with the alternate M.C. Is Burning and the J.B. medley. The rantings of W.P.P. "spiritual advisor" Jesse Crawford are much appreciated, including his support of the Zenta Commandments...
White Panther Chairman John Sinclair is present for some stoned saxophone ramblings on the crazed improv I'm Mad Like Eldridge Cleaver. Remember Eldridge from the good old days when he was the eloquent Minister of Info for Black Panther Party before he lost his mind and became a born-again Republican? At any rate, this is a solid collection for fans of this great band, and stands as an excellent companion piece to their three classic albums.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better postumous MC5 releases........2002-06-11

The problem with these rarities compilations of the MC5 and the Stooges is they usually just coast on the band's legend while releasing [poor] quallity live recordings and demos. The new MC5 retro is a rare exception. While it may not be as essential as "Babes In Arms" this one does have excellent quallity out takes & altrernitive takes from "KIck Out the Jams"! That same show produced a cover of Ray Charles' "I believe to my soul" which, up until now, has not even been availible as a bootleg! (Other outkates from "Jams" not yet availible are "looking at you", "black to comm" and Screamin' Jay's "I put a spell on you.") Also, you get the alts of "Moter City's burnin'" and "rama lama fa faf fa". The rest of the CD is more or less the usual mediocer stuff usually associated with comps like these but die hard MC5 fans (like myself) will want this for the "Jams" outtakes. You'll be so pleased with those you'll forgive the rest of the album.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting earlier versions.......2007-04-10

I will never understand why Tommy Bolin didn't do his own singing until his solo albums - he has a great voice. In the James Gang, the singer sounded a lot like him anyway, but in this one, totally different. It's interesting to hear the songs in a lower voice - easier for me to sing along with...

I enjoyed hearing earlier versions of "Dreamer" and "Got No Time For Trouble." As another reviewer said, this is more for the Tommy Bolin fan as opposed to a casual listener. If you want to collect his best recordings, I would suggest his solo recordings "Teaser" & "Private Eyes." Also, with the James Gang on "Bang." Because of its' incredible production, I use "Private Eyes" as the test recording for any new music equipment I am purchasing.

I don't listen to this one nearly as much as the ones I have already mentioned and some of the posthumous releases.

5 out of 5 stars The missing year of Tommy Bolin.......2007-03-16

Excellent album accounting for the year where nothing was "officially" recorded by him. Never before released and is an authorized release by Tommy's family and not the Big record companies. Profits go to the family, and the families record company publishing Tommys works and memorabilia.

5 out of 5 stars The best band you've never heard! No Kidding!.......2007-01-27

Tommy Bolin said this was his favorite band that he ever played in, better than the James Gang, Zephyr and even Deep Purple. It's easy to believe after listening to this. Recorded in 1972 when he was just 20 years old, his work on this album is easily some of his most creative & transcends many of his better known peers of the time such as Page, Blackmore & even the recently departed Jimi Hendrix. And he wrote or cowrote most of the songs here. Quite impressive in their eclectic scope, the songs range from the inspired metal blast of "Heartlight", the soulful jazz fusion R&B of "Limits" (which is my fave track), the slow ballad "Dreamer" played with grit and a killer guitar solo (although Tommy really perfected this one on his "Teaser" album), the chugging blues-based rock of "Got No Time For Trouble" (far better than the James Gang version). "Red Skies" is also better than the later version that Bolin would record with the James Gang IMO. Many other great moments on this, the sound is fantastic for the most part, although the instrumental "Hoko Hey" is a bit muddy in sound quality, but these are remastered demos recorded in 1972 so you can't expect perfect clarity. "Limits" sounds incredible, killer sound IMO. And this is clearly a band in the true sense of the word, it's really not Tommy Bolin & Energy although he deservedly earned most of the accolades at the time, the drummer Bobby Berge is absolutely sensational, as is Stan Sheldon on bass who went on to much acclaim later in jazz fusion circles and with Peter Frampton, Jeff Beck etc. Jeff Cook's vocals are bluesy and powerful if his range may be a bit limited at times, he's also a great lyricist and was a favorite collaborator of Tommy's for the remainder of Bolin's short life. Tom Stephenson's keyboards add the perfect blend and dimension to the group and his vocal take on "Limits" is powerful. Clearly a band effort here. Oddly for 1972, too eclectic to win over the fickle record companies and garner a record contract. They broke up a year or so later. Maybe if they had stuck it out longer they would have snagged that ever elusive contract. If they had, they would have been one of the premiere bands of the 70's, I'm sure of it.

3 out of 5 stars A solid collection of demos........2007-01-06

Good release but only for the hardcore Bolin fan. It's been said that Energy was always a better band live on stage than in the studio, and listening to the 2CD Energy Radio Broadcasts is that proof. Even though that release is hard to find, and the sound is muddy, the band is electric and on fire. If you own this release but not the 2CD Radio Broadcasts, pick that up, and believe me this will remain on the shelf for the rest of your life.

4 out of 5 stars New Race - 'The First And The Last' (Total Energy).......2004-09-26

As I've known about this CD release for awhile now,I certainly didn't expect it to be THIS good.My stereo was giving me problems,so I stuck this CD in to see if my player could work properly,as I just planned to play the first song or two.Needless to say,'The First...' just yanked my full attention right out of me.Very impressive for a one-time project. As 'The First...' was recorded on the band's one and only brief tour of Australia in 1981.New Race was made up of ex-MC 5 drummer Dennis Thompson,ex-Stooge guitarist Ron Asheton and three former members of Radio Birdman. As for the tunes,I thoroughly dug "Haunted Road","Sad TV",the Stooges "Loose",their tribute to JFK "November 22,1963" and the MC 5's "Looking At You".Just well played down to earth Aussie American hard rock.As I realize this MAY be a strange comparison, but in several ways,'The First And The Last' sort of reminds me of that one-time lp by the Billion Dollar Babies(you know, the three former members of the original Alice Cooper Group?)See my review of their 'Battle Axe Complete' 3-CD release.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best punk live albums.......2001-07-18

To be honest punk is not a genre for great live albums mainly because punk shows are hard to record. There are a handful of exceptions: MC5's "Jams", Viletones' "Saturday Night Sunday Morning", Chords' "No One's Listening Anymore",Pork Duke's "Squeel Meat Again", "Iggy Live At the Channel" and this. The New Race were a short lived "supergroup" consisting of former members of Radio Birdman, the Stooges and MC5. The well recorded songs are mostly unused Birdman songs. Best moments: "crying sun", "haunted road", "breaks my heart", "sad TV", "Nov. 22, 1963" and the cover of Iggy's "loose".

5 out of 5 stars Classic Disc for Stooges-MC5-Radio Birdman Fans!.......2001-07-12

Impossible to find on vinyl -- now on CD!

This is a well-recorded, live document of a never-to-repeated Australian tour. The shows featured a Detroit-rock supergroup with a line-up including original Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton (burning!), MC5 drummer Dennis Thompson (in top form!), Radio Birdman guitarist/songwriter (and ex-Detroiter) Deniz Tek, and Birdman vocalist Rob Younger. Among the tracks you will find the definitive recording of the never-officially-released Destroy All Monsters composition "Nov. 22" (a furious evocation of the Kennedy asssasination), with Younger's vocals leaving Cary Loren and Niagara in the dust, as well as smokin' versions of the Stooges' "Loose" and the MC5's "Looking at You" (the A-Side of the first-ever MC5 single on A-Square records). I saw this LP exactly once on vinyl (as an Australian import) about twenty years ago, snapped it up, and played it to death. The time to obtain a clean CD copy is NOW!
