4 out of 5 stars Sounds of the Celtic Poets, Jah Wobble style........2005-06-27

The Invaders of the Heart capture the music of the celtic poets. Jah Wobble sets the poetry to a mixture of eastern influenced jazz and traditonal celtic music. One of the poems was written by former Pogue Shane MacGowan.
This was the first disc released by Jah Wobble's music label 30Hertz. Wobble had a nasty falling out with his former label Island Records. The music is great and enjoyable. The raspy vocals by Ronnie Lane only add to the
album's charm.

Strongly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Music is great, the poetry gets old.......2003-01-11

The music on this CD is great. The poetry is compelling the first few times, but after that it gets on your nerves. There's one spot on this CD that made me laugh out loud the first time I heard it, where the poet goes from talking about famine and murdering a bailiff and landlord to saying "and then I went for a drink..." It's the ultimate nonsequitor, but probably not intended to be funny. I plan on making my own copy of this CD without the poetry. I sorta wish Wobble had just been inspired by the poetry and not actually included it. But again, the music is great, jazz and world music with constantly changing beats and instruments.

Album Description

The fifth release from Song of the Lakes, Poets Say, is a testimony of the versatility of the band. Traditional sounds of the Celtic Isles and Scandinavia keeps the band rooted in its own tradition. New sounds in new original songs takes the band into previously un-chartered territories resulting a mix of ballads, jigs, reels, chain gang song, almost country, and south American rhythms. With this project the band continues its quest to spread joy to its audience. This recording, with the band's creative song writing, musical arrangements, and strong delivery as cornerstones has brought the band to new heights. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Frontier Recordings in our home county it is a high quality product that does not compromise technical expectations of this day and age.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to this----and head straight for the North Atlantic.......2004-11-25

Hey, I've been listening to the new CD and am very impressed with the range of musical styles and the originality of so many of the songs. Favorites so far are Poets Say, featuring a lovely flute descant "trippling" and some cool lyrics, wrapped around a melody that one wants to sing along with, over and over. Amberetta is a joy. Montreux could only be described as silky and sensual, moist....and somewhere in Europe. Castle Kelly/Coleraine lilts along ever so Celtically until it erupts into the passionate urgency that brings to mind ancient rituals of sacrifice on smoky, dark ledges on dank nights somewhere in the Isles. Bossman Joe, of course, bites down hard and makes one cheer for the truth-telling that liberates.....while somehow hinting at revenge. Yeah, whips are good. Song of the Lakes has reached new heights with Poets Say. Bravo! See you at the Opera House.

Celtic and Scandinavian music on harp and Finnish kantele

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Undeniably cheerful music..........2006-07-23

Listen to Northern Light when the mind and spirit are in need of an infusion of optimism and cheer. You will find a wonderful mix of traditional Celtic and Scandinavian selections, played on the Celtic harp and the unique-sounding kantele. Tasteful flute further enlivens this recording. Put it on for a delightful music experience.

5 out of 5 stars Step into Northern Light.......2004-11-18

Step into Northern Light and drift through the mystical lands of the Irish bards and Finnish poets with dulcet harp, bright kantele and lyric woodwinds. Valerie Klemetti Blessley gently leads listeners through the music of ancient northern lands to discover the mysteries, songs and dances of the Celtic folk harp and Finnish kantele. Your heart will smile and your toes will tap as you bask in Northern Light.

A self-described lover of "Celtinavian Music," Valerie's music reflects her Scandinavian and Irish heritage. She began playing music during childhood, when she learned to play the recorder and the flute. Valerie has studied harp with David Harper, in Albuquerque, NM and Marion Fouse in Portland, OR. Most recently, Valerie has studied kantele with Wilho Saari and Cathy Cushing of Washington state, and Dr. Arja Kastinen, a respected Finnish kantele professor.

Valerie plays harp, kantele, and woodwinds in the popular northwest duo, Celtic Muse, with Jennifer Pratt-Walter. She also performs with the Finnish-American kantele ensemble, Livakat, and the trio Soittorasia (Music Box).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Andrews.......2006-02-20

He isn't on this CD, but he's my old Physics prof and on the 2nd one. He rules. I own this one and have yet to get the second from him. They are amazing to see together in concert. Dr. Andrews, next time I'm in Ytown, I'll harass you for the second.

5 out of 5 stars stolen cd.......2004-03-13

I loved the cd and apparently the guy who broke into my car and stole it is loving it too. We had it for a few days and curiously enough the lowly criminal didn't abscond with all my cd's. He was very selective and passed over the pop cd's, but took the Road to Killeshandra and a couple flamenco and tango cd's. Of course, this all happened outside the Albatross in Berkeley which attracts a very erudite and eclectic crowd which likes to munch popcorn and read Nietzsche in the dark.

5 out of 5 stars Karen Schubert.......2004-02-20

This is a wonderful CD, richly textured with voice, nostalgia, instrument, longing, and toe-tapping drum beats. Some cuts are straight-up fun and others express the poignancy of old age, love, home. It's a delightful mix of original and traditional Irish folksongs. As one of my favorite CDs, I find myself going back to it again and again.
