First of all, hats off to Bon Jovi for trying something different with This Left Feels Right--a selective collection of their most popular songs with a twist. That twist isn't a purely acoustic reworking, MTV unplugged style--anybody looking for that experience will be sorely disappointed by what's on offer. What Bon Jovi have done is re-record these songs in a completely different way while maintaining the original lyrics, melody and song structure. What's different then? Well, quite a bit actually. Check out the almost trip-hop beat and distorted vocal of "Wanted Dead or Alive", or the lazy soul of "Livin' on a Prayer". "It's My Life" is a beautiful piano-only standout, almost worth having the whole album for.
The tracklisting isn't perfect, concentrating largely on their 1980s period (there's nothing from These Days, for instance). As such, the venture works as an effective cheese-extraction exercise, keeping the elements that made the originals so great, but removing shouty, hairspray-fuelled "whoa-yeahs". What we get is something that is closer to Jon Bon Jovi's last solo offering--the criminally underrated Destination Anyway. It doesn't always work ("Bed of Roses" just sounds like a warbling cover of the powerful original and by the time they reach "Always" it's obvious they've run out of new twists), and no doubt there will be legions of bemulleted faithfuls who will denounce this as blasphemy of the highest order. Sure, it's probably just record-company filler, but it's a worthwhile investment and you won't be embarrassed to have it on when your mates come round. --Cortman Virtue

don't waste your money.......2007-07-23
I HAVE LISTENED TO BON MJOVI SINCE HE START3ED HIS CARRER AND I NEVER THOUGHT HE WOULD DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS. I WAS SO EXCITED BY THE TITLE MI COULD HARDLY WAIT TO HEAR IT. IT WAS SSSOOOOOOO BAD.....I COULD NOT REDCOGNIZE A SONG UNTIL IT WAS ALMOST HALFWAY THRU. ONE SONG SOUNDS LIKE THE NEXT...IF YOU DON'T MIND LISTENING TO HIS MUSIC AT HALF THE SPEED THEN THIS IS FOR YOU, THERE IS NO EXCITMENT IN THIS MUSIC AT ALL. I LISTENED HOPING HE WAS SRARTING MELLO AND WAS GOING TO JAZZ IT UP NO SUCH LUCK...THIS IS ONE CD OF BON JOVI'S I COULD DO WITHOUT.
The point?.......2007-06-28
So let me get this straight...all of Bon Jovi's hits were gathered together, chopped up, and destroyed to produce this piece of trash? How about an ACTUAL greatest hits album?
Disapointed.......2007-06-25
I did not like any of the songs on this album. It really only ranks 1 star, but I'll give a point for trying something new.
"This left feels right" sounds like it was done by a high school cover band trying to be artistic. Ranks WAY below Tesla (see "Five man acoustical jam" for those of you younger then 30).
I am a Bon Jovi fan and bought this without reservation. I suggest you sample the songs before you buy.
Love it........2007-05-09
I love this album. I also love the original songs. Sometimes you feel like a nut; sometimes you don't. For those who are gasping at the supposed blasphemy of messing with classics, well, if this is all they have to worry about, their lives must be pretty good and I'm happy for them. As for me, I'm impressed that Bon Jovi took a bit of a risk. I think it worked out nicely. I'd happily buy more of this style from them.
What a let down!!!!.......2007-03-22
I was SO disappointed when I listened to this CD! It's a remix of the songs. They are done acousticly and it is not worth buying. I love Bon Jovi, but this was a HUGE disappointment! I am not happy with this CD at all.

Great CD.......2006-11-01
This CD is awesome. I was lucky enough to hear Eric play in Utah and he has an amazing voice. There is no foul language and it is entertaining for the whole family.
An amazing voice and a worthwhile message!.......2006-10-27
I love this CD - Eric's songs range from the thought-provoking, to the nostalgic, to the just plain fun! I'm not even a big country fan, but I think that his music appeals to a wide range of audiences! To top it all off, everything I've heard about him and seen of him during interviews, shows him to be a very sweet, down-home, humble kind of guy, who just happens to have extraordinary talent!
Absolutely Wonderful!.......2006-10-24
I loved this CD. It has a good mix of songs on it from several fun and light-hearted songs to songs that provoke deep thought and reflection on life. Eric is very talented and I recommend this to everyone.
Great music.......2006-10-16

Hap Palmer may be best known for his vocal contributions to the hugely popular Baby Songs video series, but parents of 2- to 5-year-olds, particularly those with a sturdier than average educational bent, will find a lot to love on Early Childhood Classics: Old Favorites with a New Twist. This release rids itself of tiresome attempts to turn performances of simple songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" into minor personal masterpieces and instead injects its de rigueur dose of creativity directly into familiar lyrics. For instance, while there's the usual cow and pig on Old MacDonald's farm, we're also introduced to Henrietta's House, where there's a cat, Zebediah's zoo with its tiger, and the puppy in Pamelina's pet shop. Similarly, instead of the usual "Pat-a-Cake" cliffhanger, where the cake's put in the oven and that's all she wrote, we get to hear the ding-ding-ding when it's done and layer on the frosting. The sequence of songs is repeated instrumentally after Palmer's interpretations to allow for sing-alongs and the dreaming up of more new lyrics--a useful device for caregivers who think like teachers (those who don't, though, can make use of clever movement and activity suggestions in the liner notes). Each song's wordplay and simple rhymes are catchy enough to fall into the can't-fail category when it comes to enhancing vocabulary, phonics, and vocabulary skills, and the surprise lyrics lend themselves nicely to attentive listening. Early Childhood Classics delivers old-fashioned fun in a satisfyingly unsplashy way. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Here is a joyful collection of all time favorite activity songs for young children. Hap Palmer's unique renditions preserve the charm and simplicity of traditional songs while adding new, original lyrics and melodies to extend and enrich the familiar classics.
The simplicity and repetition of these songs guarantee active participation by encouraging children to sing and move with the music. While having fun and participating actively, children develop motor and musical skills and learn about animals, counting, identification of body parts, and phonics. As children sing along, responding to the imagery and humor of the lyrics, reading readiness is also enhanced. Alliteration and rhyme develop a child's ear for the sounds of language - an important pre-reading skill.
These songs are developmentally appropriate for the very young child - infant to 5 years. However, the familiar melodies and contemporary arrangements also elicit surprisingly gusty participation from first and second grade students. A variety of musical styles adds new life to well known songs with swing, blue grass, country, classical, rock, pop, and blues arrangements.
Fifteen songs are presented with vocal interpretation. The sequence is then repeated instrumentally providing opportunities for singing along and creating new lyrics using children's ideas. The instrumental selections also familiarize children with the sounds of a variety of musical instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, flute, English horn, accordion, and a variety of percussion instruments such as conga drums, bougaraboo drum, ouiro, shaker, wood block and tambourine.
The instrumental versions of each song can be used in the following ways:
1. After children have learned words with the vocal version, they can sing along hearing only the music.
2. Children can create their own lyrics and sing the song using their ideas.
3. The music can accompany sessions in movement exploration and creative movement.
Suggestions for activities and variations are not limited to those presented in this guide book. There are endless possibilities awaiting your creative impulse.

Early Childhood Classics - Old Favorites With A New Twist.......2007-05-26
We listen to this CD almost evry day while driving around in the car. My daughter loves singing the songs!!! They are all good. Well worth the money!!
One of the best young children's CDs!.......2006-02-24
My almost 4 year old is a huge Hap Palmer fan, and it's catching on to me. Just listen to one of his CDs, and you'll understand. This one in particular is great. I love how he makes beloved children songs even better. I never thought I'd be just as happy to hear a children's CD as one of my own, but this is so catchy, and it is priceless hearing my young daughter singing along to the words! It's great for her memory skills, remembering and singing to all the songs, and it's great for her learning rhyme and rhythm. The lyrics he adds are sooo fun and cathy and sweet. I love this guy!
Great Kid Tunes.......2006-02-18
I bought this for my daughter, who is two, and my older kids love it as much as she does. Easy to remember lyrics and catchy tunes make this a great cd to listen to.
Great music, great twist.......2005-10-28
If standard kid's tunes play in your house or car all day long, you will love this refreshing cd and your kid's won't miss a beat. I don't understand the 2 star review. If you don't like something, that's fine. But the reviewer's logic is very skewed in that they said it didn't meet their expectations, even though 1) The cd was a gift, and 2) The title of the cd tells you that it's not an album of "to-the-letter" standards. So if you don't like the music or your child doesn't like it, fine. But don't rate it down because you had ridiculous expectations from something you didn't even want or buy. If you are open-minded and enjoy good, fun, music you will love this. There is varied musical accompaniment and Hap sings great and truly seems to feel the music (unlike most performers of children's standards). Of course, the ultimate critic is the child. My daughter LOVES this cd (she's 21 months old now and has been listening to it since 12 months). Again, if you want standard kid songs, you may be disappointed with this because the music and words are different (usually, each song starts in a traditional manner but then non-standard lyrics and music follow). But if you want a twist without leaving the traditional songs altogether, buy this. I don't think you will be disappointed.
A favorite at library storytime.......2005-10-19
I'm a children's librarian in Illinois and this cd has become one I use at almost every storytime. I especially love "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" because it contains a verse inserted by Hap Palmer which allows me to introduce Shakespeare to the tiniest child. He uses a line from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" -- "silver bow new bent in heaven" to describe the moon. I have entire families singing along, learning a famous quotation painlessly! And it's a beautiful, calming song to use at the end of a storytime. Parents and kids love it!

Album Description
Songs of THE BEATLES
with a Cuban TWIST.
Here Comes
el Son merges the spirit of The Beatles with the soul of Cuban music. It offers Beatles fans a rare bifocal musical experience: familiar Fab Four tunes rendered in grassroots Afro-Cuban rhythms. This musically rich CD also presents the music enthusiast with an exotic compilation of songs of the most famous Rock 'n Roll group in the world in styles never heard before.
HISTORICAL FACTS
Banned in Cuba during the early years of the revolution, Beatles music managed to break through and establish a following that endures to this day in Cuba. HCES emerges from that following as the FIRST record of Beatles songs played in traditional Cuban musical rhythms. It is also the FIRST record performed in English by Cuban musicians residing in Cuba.
Customer Reviews:
More substance than not.......2005-04-21
I was surprised by this album overall, as there were new takes on classics. Some do fall a little flat for my taste. But the simple act of recording it and paying homage to the brits was revolutionary if you believe the history behind this. Some cuts are a bit abrupt, as the syncopation and melodics seem to work against each other in a frenzy of forced rhythm that is neither here nor there. But when they get it all together it's magical. A good effort, original... with the heart in the right place and the harmonies do it justice. Only a couple may trascend the original. I'll never think of hello, goodbye the same way again. And here comes the sun glows with the light of a caribbean sunset, with the strumming of the "tres". While And I love her gains a wistful sweetness.
Magnificent.......2004-08-23
Very warm, thoughtful and enjoyable. A gem. Has a "sad" longing sound, the players must really want to be in Havana -without Castro- to have inadvertely influx that sadness in their adaptation's dna.
A must have for Latin Music Lovers!!!.......2004-03-04
As a musician and a Lover of the Beatles and Latin Music, This
CD adds style and Flavor to several popular Beatle songs.
From the upbeat Afro drums of "Hey Jude", to the romantic blend of percussion in "And I Love Her" to the a capella rendition
of "Because" {all sung with a really nice Spanish accent}
The Beatles captured the sound of a generation, this CD caputers
the soul of that sound through diverse Latin arrangements.
This is truly a valuble part of my muisc collection.
Simply excellent........2004-02-17
Although making versions of already famous songs guarantees success, these musicians have paid due respect to them by accompanying the lyrics with beautiful arrangements. You'll be delighted.
Cuban Cheese.......2003-05-14
I'm usually a fan of "tribute" CD's, unfortunately I found this one to be a disappointment. A few of the selections have interesting rhythmic and acappella arangements, "Because" and "Hello Goodbye". But most of it just comes accross as rather cheesy. It sort of sounds like a Carribean cruise ship band recorded this. It could use a little more edge. Where's Ry Cooder when you need him?

The Kronos Quartet--apparently tired of performing some of the most riveting Western classical works composed in the last century--decided to take a vacation with Caravan. Where did they go? As evidenced by this globetrotting disc, seemingly everywhere. Music from the Middle East, South America, India, Portugal, and California (to name just a few) find their way onto this genre-blurring disc, along with a few surprises. They do a dizzying take on Dick Dale's "Miserlou," which we learn was originally written by Nicholas Roubanis in the '30s; perform a tune from India's bustling "Bollywood" film music industry; and tackle Terry Riley's inventive "Corgeo Funebre en el Monte Diablo"--the second movement of his Requiem for Adam (written for the late son of Kronos leader David Harrington). These are disparate but enthralling works that run the gamut from frenetic to reflective. Even though Caravan sounds less cohesive than Kronos's other world music foray, Pieces of Africa, this is still an enthralling collection and a must for Kronos fans. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
unpleasant sounds.......2006-11-10
Kronos Caravan was a dissapointment and a waste of money. I can only stand to listen to two of the tracks. Most of the tracks are an annoying blend of too many strings and what ever instrument the guest artist is playing.I never want to listen to any of the music from the cultures represented on this cd.
Another great Kronos.......2002-07-09
The positive part is that this is really good but I rank their last "Nuevo" higher because that one holds togheter better.
This is mostly middle eastern/central europe stuff and even if I THINK I know way some argentinian/portuguise tracks are in this (because of that argentininan tango has it roots in middle europe.. portugal cobining bandelon with portuguese fado) it feels misplaced here but artisticially it is very good performed anyway and... hows about "Miserlou Twist" then.. well composer of that old hit has his roots in Libanon so.. :-).
Anyway is this very good, fun, well played and sound, production is also something extra.
You be pleased with this if you like stringquartets with more of a folklore style but my advice is that you by this togheter with Nuevo then you have two great great discs.
People used to Kronos cooperation with Glass, Steve Riech should like this but it is def. NOT minimalism att all.
Stunning.......2000-11-19
I've never been a fan of classical music. Being forced to listen to Mozart and such growing up in school, ugh, school has made me gain a deep hatred of famous classical composers and the like. Never thought I would ever get into classical music because it was all killed to me.
Then I heard of Kronos Quartet. They were raved about on a movie review for "Requiem for a Dream," which they are mostly responsible for the entire score on. So, I decided to give them a bit of a chance. I bought three of their albums, "Early Music," and "Kronos Quartet performs Phillip Glass." The most important of all of these is "Caravan."
The last CD I listened to, I was a little afraid to, because I figured I'd enjoy Western pieces a little more, and probably wouldn't like the more 'world' sound this album seems to say it has.
I couldn't have been more wrong, from the opening track, "Pannoia Boundless," I was in love, raving about it to everyone I knew. Every track seems to have an energy that oozes from within it, these dynamics that manage to grab me and toss me around every time. Even the weakest track, being "Cortejo Funebre en el Monte Diablo," because of the horribly synth-sounding beats, horns, and bells, still has a certain power after you get past the horrible intro of the song.
Either way, Kronos Caravan is a great listen for anyone just dabbling in classical string quartets and wants something a little more high power and intrusive than your average "background music."
And they never stepped off the train..........2000-07-22
According to the press and liner notes, this album is intended to chart a sort of musical journey, obviously reflected by the title. Such a concept is highly suspect - eclecticism for its own sake (or more likely for the sake of capturing the widest consumer base) very rarely leads to meaningful, cohesive art, possibly because the best art comes "from within", that is, from within an individual's or a group's experience, not simply the surface reflection of ethnic stereotypes. Add to this the antequated notion that a caucasian string quartet can "capture" the world's sounds for YOUR discerning ears, and you have a piece of sheer mediocrity.
Osvaldo Golijov's arrangements excel at highlighting various effects of instrumental combinations. That's a plus. However, these performances are mostly shorn of whatever vitality is inherent in the compositions, by the quartet's lack of rhythmic unity and attack - some of these takes sound like tentative rehearsals. The worst in this respect has to be "Aaj Ki Raat". Anyone who knows Indian film music is aware of its energy and manic quality. This performance, however, has none of that, opting instead for a navel-gazing lack of dynamism that actually serves to bury the melodic theme, in lieu of which we are given the sound of tablas, which even Zakir Hussain can't make jive with the ennervated ensemble.
Not surprisingly, the only impassioned performance is "Turceasca", likely because most of the music is played by Taraf de Haidouks, a Romanian Gypsy ensemble that lends its "quaint" and "primitive" spunk to the tastemaker quartet, producing a "rousing, olde country" stewe.
Anyone with an interest in music beyond her/his borders should pick up the real thing, spend a little money, force her/himself to get used to its strangeness, and maybe she/he will come away a little wiser. Oh, yes, purchase an honest classical disc next time, as well.
Beautiful!.......2000-07-13
This CD is great in many ways. There is beatiful music from all over the world on this one. It's interesting 'cause it's rather easy listened, but still very deep and vital. "Pannonia Boundless" and "Turceasca" was the first two tracks to capture me. After that you discover the beauty of the other tracks. The themes of the songs are very clear and they work fine both as headphone-music as background-music. Get this one!

One of the Best Bands around.........2004-07-30
I first heard this band when the opened for Jump Little Children...Phenomenal! This CD helps capture their sound when you hear them live. (Which I think everyone should do...) The melodies, guitar riffs, Celtic influence, strong bass talent, and mesmerizing drums make this CD an "experience" to listen too.
Amazon should offer a money back guarantee for this album because nobody will dislike it.
This album is best served with a few pints of Guinness.
Great Band, Great CD.......2004-07-03
I fortunately was given this CD by a band member of Carbon Leaf, and it literally didn't leave my CD player for weeks! I saw the guys play and they completely blew me away. The energy and quality of their live show is just awesome. This CD really captures the Carbon Leaf live experience. This CD is a really good introduction of Carbon Leaf. Some of my personal favorite of this disc are Home, Blue Ridge Laughing, Torn to Tattered, Wanderin' Around, American Tale, Desperation Song, and Toy Soldiers. However, all the songs are fantastic. This is just an all around great CD from an all around great band. Everyone do yourself a favor: start listening to Carbon Leaf.
Completely unique band with familiar influences.......2004-05-10
These guys sound like they grew up on 80's Athens rock, bluegrass & celtic traditions, and spent some formative time grooving to Phish.
But they are completely their own. With incredible guitar riffs to great vocals, they create their own sound. They understand the power of traditional roots to move their audiences, and are fabulous live.
Best live band I've heard.......2003-09-17
This album is perfect for people who have heard Carbon Leaf but have never had the good fortune to see them in concert. Carbon Leaf's passion is to perform and this album let's that shine through. Between the amazing musicality exhibited in the solos, the energy of the performances, and the creativity in adapting covers of other songs to their style, this album is a winning combination. The other great thing about this album is getting to hear some of their new songs that aren't studio recorded yet.
If you've never heard Carbon Leaf before, this might be a good one to start with. It'll get you hooked and you'll start watching their website for the next time they're in your neck of the woods.
Good Introduction to a Great Band.......2003-09-11
If you've never heard of Carbon Leaf before, this CD is a great introduction. Whe nI first heard Carbon Leaf it was in a live setting, and I was hooked after the first song... this CD will do the same thing.

Album Description
Fried Glass Onions--Memphis Meets The Beatles is a celebration of The Beatles and of the city that greatly inspired and influenced them. Most of these interpretations have a definitive, identifiable Memphis twist. Daddy Mack Orr's "Get Back" is a stripped-down, blues rendition. Bob Simon & Eddie Harrison's "Two Of Us" sounds like vintage Sam & Dave from the Stax Records era. Most of these versions are either R&B or soul infused, although funk treatments of "The One After 909" and "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" take the groove a little deeper. The Memphis All-Stars version of "Drive My Car" is absolutely unstoppable and demonstrates the undeniable potency of a four-piece soul band. These 14 tracks represent a diverse pool of contemporary Memphis talent offering fresh versions of Beatles songs that will not disappoint even the most discerning Beatles fan. At the same time, proponents of classic Memphis music will hear Beatles songs like never before and will delight in knowing that Memphis music is alive and well. All of this material was recorded and mixed between June 24 and November 24, 2004, specifically for this unique tribute CD.

Awesome renditions!!.......2007-06-06
I received this CD as a gift and just two days into it I can't get enough of "Helter Skelter". I was not much of a fan of the original version but this one skoots! I'll be playing this CD for awhile..........!
Thanks Patty and Steve-o
Funking with the Beatles.......2007-04-21
I saw this band last night at the Gibson Guitar Factory Lounge in Memphis and was spellbound (and I am not easily entertained). I really expected to be bored but was awed. If you get the rare chance to see this collection of Memphis' best talent live, don't miss it, you'll have a ball. These selections are not note for note covers (and what good would that be?) but reworked Beatles smothered in Memphis funk. Some of the arrangements are startling innovative (ever heard a psychedelic flute or a gospel version of All You Need is Love?) and all are fun. The musicianship throughout is first rate. The cds are not the same as seeing Fried Glass Onions live but all 3 cds belong in any Beatle fan's collection. There are a few misses across the 3 cds--none of the cuts make you run to the player to skip them--but you'll return to the real jewels in these 3 cds for years to come. Get all 3, you won't regret it. By the way, I have no connection to this band and have never before bothered to write a review.
Happiness is...this take on the Beatles.......2007-04-10
Beatles fans are in for a treat when they load this disk into their CD players. Classic Beatle songs are sung & played as never imagined before. Listen to a soulful, haunting version of Blackbird by Jackie Johnson,or Two of Us getting the Sam & Dave treatment (by Simon & Harrison),a cool funked up rendition of She Came In Through the Bathroom Window (Matt Tudor)is lots of fun. Old Brown Shoe, The One After 909, and others are also all here on Volume One. In my opinion, there are a couple of misses. Notably Get Back is especially hard on the ears. Way overall though, if you love the Beatles, and can handle these twisted variations, by all means go for it. You won't experience a hard day's night listening to it.
Alas, I can't recommend Volume 2, but I haven't heard #3 yet, so there is still hope for more great music.
pleasant surprise.......2007-01-23
this CD would have been low on my radar except for some enthusiastic reviews from previous consumers. they were right that any beatles fan who likes good music would like this CD. having been to the rock and soul museum in memphis recently, i got the other two in this set, volumes 2 and 3. the first one is the best and the first to buy. i think this CD is a definite winner.
Most Are Great.......2006-03-15
Although there are a few cuts that I am not thrilled with, over all, this album adds some interesting cuts to my library, originally recorded by the best band of all time. It does have the Memphis feel throughout. Unfortunate that a few of the bands should have stayed in the lounges.

Todd is just Todd..........2007-06-09
What ever you may think of this particular cd you have to admit that Todd never rests on his laurels. Listening to this music just shows that great songwriting transcends all. I am a fan and will admit that although I enjoy all of Todd's work, of course there is some of his music that I appreciate more than others. I feel the same about the Beatles and many other artists. Please give Todd his due. Most of us live our lives never being able to write a song that is as good as what Todd has probably thrown in the trash can. Todd is Godd!
a fun disc... .......2005-09-24
I probably gave this three stars more because it's a lot of fun...
I love Rundgren, and I love Samba/Bossa Nova music. However, the only real musical value for me is that hearing Todd's compositions in a different context underscores how terrific of a songwriter he is. Many of his songs could easily become standards.. consider how many have covered "Love is the Answer" for example.. even Glen Campbell!
I think this is a fine recording to enjoy as background music, or just for a little fun (beach party, backyard barbeque, etc) It's fairly well done in terms of arrangements.
Musically speaking, it's pretty much a novelty recording. If you're familiar with Jobim, Toquinho/Vincuis De Moreas, Luiz Bonfa, Joao Bosco, Joao/Astrud Gilberto, Djavan, Sergio Mendez the arrangements often have roots in famous recordings by these brazilian greats. I highly recommend checking out some of the great brazilian music by these masters.
Shawn
ps If you haven't heard A Wizard, A True Star, Something/Anything?, Todd, Faithful, Healing, A Capella, or Initiation check those out to hear why Rundgren has such devout followers.
Hated It! Zero Stars should have been an option.......2004-06-06
While I hate to disagree with so many ardent fans, this has got to be one of the worst cd's i have ever heard. Not just the worst Todd Rundgren cd, but worst overall. I am a long time Rundgren fan and bought this sorry piece of work thinking that, as with some of his other experiments, the arrangements would eventually find their way into my unconscious mind and I would love them. DIDN'T HAPPEN. Don't waste your money. Don't get me wrong, Todd is still God, but most of God's creation has already gone extinct, and this cd certainly deserves the same
fate.
A Masterpiece of understated passion for song.......2003-05-30
This album is stunningly beautiful. I remember reading that Rundgren recorded it as a slap in the face to his label, which wanted another "Best Of" album, and it is a best of. The musicianship, recording values and Todd's singing are all first rate. He is America's great under-rated musical treasure. For you guys, this album is a genuine chick magnet, too. I'm heartbroken that it's out of print. My wife and I always manage to take a few turns around the livingroom floor when we hear "Mated." If you're a true fan of the true star, purchase it used. If you don't like it, I'll buy it from you.
Could he have used a click track, perhaps?.......2003-02-13
I agree with the other positive things I have read here but I must say that in a lot of places it sounds as if Todd laid down the vocal track without the benefit of the instruments being present. How else can I describe it: His vocals are early on some passages and late on others. I know he is a talented guy and musician so it just HAS to be a part of his interpretation of this (unique) style. But it does throw me off a bit.
Rushing is especially noticable on "Can We Still Be Friends"
Are you sure Todd didn't have a double shot from Starbucks before this take?
"Influenza" also had lots of rushing, but it fits the song. He is sick with "facination", as his "heart, mind and will slips away", after all. Unique style. Yes, and Artistic to the max. That's my take on it!

Discovered The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets by accident via some soundtracks on a game preview at by kerberos-productions, like the music but disappointed in Amazon. Placed my original order for Spaceship Zero and Cthulhu Strikes Back on 5-14-06 and still don't have either as of 7-1-06.
The perfect geek band.......2005-10-17
How much do I love this group? I found it by accident, downloaded their Lovecraft-inspired tune "The Innsmouth Look", and that was that. This album is the band's 'soundtrack' for a favorite film of theirs, and it's chock-a-block full of great lyrics and catchy tunes that even non-geeks will love.
While "The Innsmouth Look" is the best tune on the album, there are plenty of good, solid pieces. I'll definitely be picking up their other albums. :)
One of, if not my favorite CD.......2004-04-02
This is a great CD. Period. I first herd of this band through the Vancouver Gaming Guild, and have not been disappointed with it at all. The songs are creative and have a good beat. I play this CD almost every day, because the popular rock bands such as Nickleback, System of a Down, etc. are not for me. In this age of file sharing, The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets are one of the few bands that I will always support.
Very cool.......2004-02-02
I used to live in Vancouver, part of the hunting range of these excellent young men. The music they make is wonderous indeed, but this album might be considered their magnus opus. I love putting it on the car stereo and really cranking it so people who hear it either fall in love with the eldritch sounds or faint in dispair over the coming of the Old Ones. Either way, I win. Buy this album now so you have something to show when The Stars Are Right.
In a word: excellent.......2003-10-18
I'm a newcomer to The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets and after a lot of searching, was able to get my copy of this CD. I've listened to it several times and have yet to grow tired of a single song.
The songs are all very catchy and the Thickets show great promise as they quickly hone their skills with their instruments. The singer, Toren MacBin, and the bassist, Bob Fugger, particularly shine in songs like The Innsmouth Look and 20 Minutes of Oxygen, two of my favorite songs.
The Math Song is also an oddly charming little number that I find myself whistling to unconsciously. The theme of old school sci-fi and Lovecraftian literature is definately a pleasant switch from so many mainstream bands which, in my opinion, are mostly either insipidly vapid pop groups that sound like they came out of cloning vats, or doom and gloom angry white male bands who also sound as if they came out of cloning vats.
The creative ensemble of this group really is a pleasant switch. If you're looking for something different with a catchy punk-ish edge, I recommend The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets.
