4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

3 out of 5 stars Seventies Disco and Soul.......2004-07-02

Before Whitney there was Cissy Houston! Produced and arranged by Michael Zager, a disco genius of the 1970s, Think It Over is a nice mix of dance numbers and soul ballads.

The title track is a real stunner, a disco masterpiece with a powerful hook and rousing vocals. Love Don't Hurt People is a gentle and tuneful ballad with an impressive orchestral arrangement and moments of great vocal virtuosity. Somebody Should Have Told Me is an uptempo disco ballad and After You a slow song with beautiful piano.

Warning - Danger is a real disco stomper with a marvelous rhythm break whilst I Just Want To Be With You is a soulful torch song and Umbrella Song has a calypso feel. Sometimes is another torch song and I Won't Be The One another uptempo disco ballad.

This CD release contains extra tracks which make it value for money. Although never a big star like Donna Summer or Gloria Gaynor, Cissy Houston had her moments. I recommend Think It Over to those who are nostalgic for the disco era.

4 out of 5 stars Dont Think it over.......2003-09-21

Buy this cd. Cissy has incredible power and range. Her voice fits any style. From disco to light pop. Her gospel trained vocals power through uptempo jams like "Think it over", "Somebody should have told me", and "Warning-Danger". The ballad "Love is holding on" is a winner. Its a tugging heartfelt song that is a standout. Their are some mis-stpes. "The Umbrella Song" is terrible. Other than that the rest can be tolerated. Cissy Houston has a unforgettable voice. This cd shows you shes not just Whitney's mother. She was a great vocalist in her own right! Sing on.

        5 out of 5 stars Disco Diva.......2003-07-29

5 out of 5 stars Cissy / One hit CD.......2002-01-06

Ok Ok Ok guys - the rest of the CD is a BOMB Mother & Child (whitney ) have done better , But what is not noted on the cd , was the Cut of "Think it over " is NOT the org mix , but the extended , which is rare , and worth the bucks shelled out , for those DJ,s looking for this rare mix THINK OVER !!

        3 out of 5 stars Cissy Houston.......2001-07-28

Any person led to this album by Michael Zager's reputation as producer may be disappointed. There are only 3 dance tracks here. 6 tracks emulate the soul ballads of The Stylistics. 2 are gospel-style ballads. The album as a whole evokes Dionne Warwick's work with the Spinners, although Cissy's vocal style is huskier and more church-rooted than her niece's.

        Album Description

Long before they became the indie darlings and international recording artistes they're usually remembered as, The Dentists were the black sheep of the mid '80s medway rock n' roll family. Railing against the tried and tested garage rock of The Prisoners and The Milkshakes, The Dentists blended the contemporary guitar pop of The Smiths, The Go Betweens and REM with the classic '60s rock of The Who, The Kinks and The Byrds, added a generous sprinkling of heavy-lidded psychedelia and played the resulting sound stew very loudly at 90 mph on beaten-up old guitars and drums. A recipe for great pop music you may think...and you'd be right! First time ever on CD, features 16 remastered tracks including the 3 bonus tracks 'Strawberries Are Growing In My Garden (And It's Wintertime)', 'Burning The Thoughts From My Skin' & 'Doreen'. Re-ola. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Some Brilliant moments.......2006-04-21

I wasn't going to add a review, but when I saw how dismissive another review was, I had to get in and say my two cents worth!
The Dentists have released some better material, but this, the first album, is filled with brilliant guitar melodies, which reaches a peak on the brilliant "Excellent Dream". If anyone likes the Jingle Jangle sound, buy this, buy all the EPs, buy Space Man, Powdered Lobster, and anything else you can find. A band that deserved to be so much bigger. Melodic songs, guitar work from Collins is brilliant and a great vocalist. All supported with some great drums and bass moments. I still listen to these records, often. And I'm still struggling to find something I like more.

        3 out of 5 stars Britpop Byrdisised.......2005-11-23

Rev-Ola, a solid label purveying well-crafted, Anglophilic pop, in its blurb above sums up well this Kent quartet's influences. It's perfectly fine, but not more than that. Fans of The Smiths, Robyn Hitchcock, the La's, and perhaps of the later period of The Jam, will like these songs. But they do not leap out at you as they should have done. Lacking the idiosyncratic but memorable stylings of a Paul Weller or Morrissey vocal, these tunes remain politer but more pedestrian in their arrangments, which cry out for Roy Wood of the Move to elaborate. I think they can hear in their heads more of sonic variety that a small budget and a first album may have thwarted.

This band knows its 60s forebears, and the title is a marvelous quote from the announcer signalling the end of the World Cup '66 English triumph over West Germany. Trouble is, with the limited production, this album stays mired in 1966 sonics that cripple the songs from fully taking charge. The first four songs grab you a bit more forcefully, with a drum sound recalling their punk-pop side, but the remainder of the tracks, until a second wind around tracks 9-10-11 brings you into their Beatlesque paisley garb fittingly, lag a bit in their lack of energy. More experimentation in the arrangements, more variety in the pretty but ultimately similar Byrdsian guitar chords, would have made more of an impact.

Still, it's a solid album, with excellent liner notes on each song by band members and fans as well as a well-illustrated history of the detailed making of the group's debut album, here appended with its first single sides. I wish all re-issues were packaged with the same care and love. This is reputedly their best album, and one that I had heard of but never heard in the mid-80s, so if you want an intro to the band (see also a compilation from 1992 on the U.S. Homestead label, "Dressed," but it overlaps with much of "Some People"), this is a good pick.

5 out of 5 stars Great live album if you're a fan of Thunder.......2004-03-16

Excellent album. 2 CD's of live music with Thunder at their best. I've been a fan of theirs since the early '90's with their album "Laughing On Judgement Day". I had it on vinyl and cassette and had burned it to a CD but recently had an electrical house fire and lost everything. It's been great to find nearly all the CD's I definitely had to replace. This album is not a replacement but a worthwhile purchase to anyone who likes music and expecially likes this band.

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

          3 out of 5 stars A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Quilter deserves better..........2005-11-10

Was this recording of Quilter songs (Complete Folk-Song Arrangements and Complete Part-Songs for Women's Voices) a vanity project for soprano Amanda Pitt? It is hard to explain in any other terms, for her voice is not pleasant to hear. It is a pinched, badly produced, squally sound - the sort of standard one would expect in a not very gifted singing student. Why Naxos permitted this travesty of a recording under their label is a mystery.

The majority of the songs on this CD are sung by the aforesaid Amanda Pitt (soprano). The other singers in this project are of a better standard - in the case of Philip Langridge, beautiful to listen to. This recording is not worthy of his excellent career and lovely tenor voice. The other two singers - mezzo Joanne Thomas and baritone David Wilson-Johnson - are not bad, either, although the mezzo doesn't get a single solo. The lack of a solo for Ms Thomas is glaringly evident when compared to the ten (10) solos which Ms Pitt sings. (10 out of 21 solos - definitely an unfair ratio. Of these ten solos, several could have been given to the mezzo to sing - they were certainly not beyond the average mezzo range.)

The rest of the album consists of duets - thirteen of them. Eleven of the thirteen duets are soprano/mezzo, and in spite of the mezzo's voice (from what one is permitted to hear of it) isn't bad, the duet performances are frankly awful, chiefly because of Ms Pitt. Even the superior quality of Philip Langridge's singing cannot save the two duets he sings with Amanda Pitt.

It's artistically an insulting and atrociously unbalanced distribution of material.

Look for the John Mark Ainsley/Lisa Milne recording of Quilter songs & arias. Admittedly, it doesn't include most of the duets on this CD, but oh, the sheer pleasure of hearing well-trained and lovely voices give Quilter a worthy treatment!
