More varied in its colors of music than a bag of Skittles in its colors of candy, Korean-Japanese producer Towa Tei's 5th solo album, "Sweet Robots Against the Machine", is a delightful grab-bag of wondrous variations of distinct music genres all in the employment of Tei and his highly creative musical imagination. Upbeat and energetic, "Sweet Robots..." is a perfect introduction to current Towa Tei.

While the most popular association of electronic music is with techno and the more vague category of dance music, Towa Tei steers his course through whatever kind of music avails itself to his genius and uses it to fit his artistic ideas. Everything from Hawaiian music to a bizarre sound system incorporating Sony's robotic pet dog Aibo, "Sweet Robots..." sounds like sophisticated video game music with a sheen of irresistible "cuteness." As Tei confesses in the liner notes for the album, "I don't know why but I wanted to keep the image of `CUTEness' on all tracks of this album." Cute it may be, but it has a sensibility that is clearly evidence of a knowing producer who knows when and how to drop the beats.

The single from the album, "Free" - while a cover of Dennis Williams' "Free" - is an amazingly refreshing and clever composition in the house style, even while sporting soulful vocals common to the genre. What is most surprising about the track is that the totally incongruent idea of a ragga vocal section in the song set to funky breaks seems to fit.

The rest of the album swings back and forth between the deliberative musings of a musical intellectual and predilections for the simply danceable. Eccentric yet interesting and palatable enough to the minimally initiated in electronic music, "Sweet Robots..." is a fantastic voyage through the almost limitless realms of electronically produced music as demonstrated by a master.

RE: TOWA TEI is a collection of remixes taken from the 2002 Sweet Robots Against the Machine release,"Towa Tei". Towa Tei has a track record for releasing remix albums that are first-rate; "Stupid Fresh", remixes from "Sound Museum" and the two-part "Lost Control Mix", remixes from "Last Century Modern" are both well worth thier high prices due to high quality production that holds up to repeated listening, long after the novelty factor of the "latest remix"-effect weares off. This latest collection plays like a series of collaborations, and frankly, is at times a little more enjoyable to listen to than the original recordings. The only negative is that of 10 tracks, only 6 from the 13 found on the original album made their way into remixed form... Additionally, the brand-new track, "The New Folk" sounds a bit like a theme song created for a television show aimed at computer-generated preschoolers. Regardless, the inclusion of a new recording is a classy gesture, and Towa Tei is a genius, even in his more experimental S.R.A.T.M. guise. "RE: TOWA TEI" is intelligent and enjoyable, an excellent addition to anyone's library of electronic music.

I'm not sure what the story is behind this album, since he has another album that is also called SRATM, but has different songs on it. It seems odd that he would release two different albums with the same title. This one is incredibly hard to find, so good luck, but it's another great Towa Tei release. This album is as good as the other SRATM album, so I see them as kind of companion albums. If you are able to find this album anywhere, you might have to pay a king's ransom for it, but it's worth it if you are a big Towa Tei fan. All of the tracks are good, so buy it if you can find it!

Once again Mr. Tei, the turntable/mixmaster/fiend has mined another musical gem. Of course like all gems this one has great beauty but also a few flaws. The "Forget Me Nots" both would make a snake get up and dance its scales off. Also the "Lotus" song is funny/techno. The bonus disc is so strange that sometimes when I listen to it I"m not sure if it is real jungle sounds or stuff that Towa put together in his studio. The only major fault I can say is that this set is too damn expensive. It is an import, but so is a Toyota...

The packaging alone makes this release worth getting. The album is a double cd. Both discs contain only one song apiece. Each song is roughly 60 minutes long. These can only loosely be called songs as they are more like long ambient sounds tracks (however, not ambient music), like the second disc containing jungle sounds from SRATM's album. The packaging is 12" record size, about a centimeter thick, with both discs attached diagonally on one side (the opposite side of the image above), and the booklet attached to the middle of the "balloon" side. The booklet offers suggestions for "proper" listening to the discs: separately, in tandem, or with the jungle sounds disc from the SRATM album. The whole thing is enclosed in a clear plastic sleeve that has the albums name on it as well as a sticker with the release number (for instance, mine says 1541 [out of the 10,000 released]). All in all, a very cool limited edition, but since it doesn't have any real songs on it, only fans of Towa who must have everything should buy this.

How do you know if you'll like Towa Tei? After he left NYC club kids Dee-lite in 1994, he went back to Tokyo and became a major staple of their dance music and bossa nova scenes. Even now you can catch him spinning various clubs in Japan and remixing Japanese and non-Japanese acts alike. But how do you know if you'll like him?

Towa Tei can bring you scads house beats like on the track "Free", but that generally isn't his style. Sweet Robots Against the Machine is a truly Japanese product, combining video game squeaks and robot voices with beats that are best described as cute (in that uniquely Japanese sort of way) and dancable. He is constantly experimenting with virtual speech programs and injecting live percussion into mixes, giving us interesting listening like "Batik" and "Hawaiian Tabla Chapa". The final track, "Pitamaha Bamboo", is an extended live recording of Balinese music, calming in an sophisticated batchelor pad sort of way. It's not perfect for every occasion, and it isn't the most souful music, but it's a lot of fun.

My favorite tracks are some of the most different: "Latte&Macaron" is a stroll through a sunny and wholly pixellated world complete with synthesized whistling. "The End of a Love Affair" is a bittersweet jazz song sung in English and tinged with electric piano and snappy beats like bubbles supporting the vocals. Very cosmopolitan, but also very human.

If you've listened to Towa Tei's even better "Last Century Modern", you'll like "Sweet Robots Against the Machine". But if you're still wondering if you'll like Towa Tei, but you know you like world-flavored techno, this definitely is worth a try.
