Mixer Presents Rae & Christian: Rewind

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Rae and Christian's smooth, ultracool handle on hip-hop puts them in a superior orbit to that of many U.S. peers, underscoring how rich U.K. hip-hop can be. Mark and Steve switch it up between blissful dreamy (Beanfield's "Planetary Deadlock"), rich and creamy (Face & Feline's "For Claudia") and old-school, blunt rhyme (Porn Theatre Ushers' "Me & Him" with Aim). The constant class throughout comes from a soul-driven heartbeat, which isn't always obvious, yet gives this Rewind its longevity. This music's warm to the ear, danceable, and unmistakably hip; you'd be hopping mad to avoid it. --Steffan Chirazi

5 out of 5 stars Blazing Beats From British Duo Rae & Christian.......2000-06-13

Mark Rae and Steve Christian, more readily known as the Manchester hip-hop tandem Rae & Christian, bring the masses an impeccable selection of beats on their Mixer release, Blazing the Crop. With their last release Northern Sulphuric Soul garnering critical acclaim, it would have been easy for the duo to simply follow-up with a release that followed the same formula as their last album. But Blazing the Crop has a much different vibe than their darker, more edgy underground release. This compilation is an amazing selection of primo tunes that cross the usual boundaries set by the hip-hop genre, joining both new school and old school with a more upbeat production style. No "get jiggy" or "bling-bling" joints up in here....this is for hip-hop afficianados who appreciate the effort of digging the crates for rare grooves, and enjoy being suprised by two DJ's who apparently understand and respect the breadth of what hip-hop represents.

Ninja Tune and Rawkus labels are represented alongside old school melodies from the past, and all are head-bob inducing. From beginning to end, the album delivers what most mix compilations fail at within the first few songs: a natural connection and progression of songs which blend into a single musical experience. Whether its the recognizable flows of veteran acts like The Jungle Brothers, the Ninja Tune styles of Mr. Scruff, or the smile-inducing soulful 1970's instrumental from Young Hold Unlimited, Rae & Christian somehow make all these individual musical elements blend in smoothly.

5 out of 5 stars Classic beats... Rae and Christian deliver once again.......2002-06-20

If you've heard Rae and Christian's contribution to the "Another Late Night" series, you know what an amazing knack this British DJ pair have for assembling faultless, groove-laden, chilled out sets. On "Mixer Presents: Rewind", they deliver another impeccable collection of tracks from a wide range of artists and styles into a consistent and coherent collage of hip beats, groovy drum beats, and amazing vocal performances. Anyone with even a passing interest in this type of music should definitely check this disc out--it's guaranteed to impress. For the best sampling try "Play On" featuring Jungle Brothers, "S & M on the Rocks" with Swollen Members, or (a definite highlight) "Just Passing Through" with Aim, which features the album's most amazing and infectious vocal performance. These are only a few of the record's greatest moments. The entire set is refreshingly consistent, with barely a dull moment in its over 60 minutes. Dig it.
