Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. The concluding disc pays homage to Tiomkin the unlikely pop tunesmith, via his hit vocal themes to Rawhide, Wild is the Wind and High Noon's "Do Not Forsake Me." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22

This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:

Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.

Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".

Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".

The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"

Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".

The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16

This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).

5 out of 5 stars "film composer Dimitri Tiomkin gave his all and then some".......2004-07-13

Silva America presents the ultimate in film music during the illustrious career of an icon and legendary composer of film scores ~ "Alamo:Dimitri Tiomkin Essential Film Collection/O.S.T", featuring some long forgotten 53 cues that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.

Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.

Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.

On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.

The last and final disc four ~ The Tiomkin Vocal Songbook featuring "This Then is Texas" (Giant), "Rawhide" (Rawhide), "Do Not Forsake Me" (High Noon), "Follow the River" (Night Passage), "The Ballad of Jett Rink" (Giant), "Thee I Love" (Friendly Percuasion), "It's A Wonderful Life", "Wild Is The Wind", "The High and the Mighty", The Ballad of the War Wagon" (The War Wagon), "Rio Bravo", "Strange are the Ways of Love" (The Young Land), "The Ballad of Jim West" (The Wild Wild West), "The Wild Wild West" (The Wild Wild West) ~ many were hit makers of the day and in the top ten.

Outstanding performances by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Nic Raine, Paul Bateman, Mario Klemens - are the conductors), Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple - choir master), featuring vocals by Jason Howard and Keith Ferreira ~ hats off to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Olilvia Tiomkin Douglas, John Waxman, Rick Clark and Gareth Williams (associate producers) ~ all film producers and directors welcomed the legendary composer with open arms for their forthcoming projects ~ the "film-score-buff" collectors are ecstatic about this four disc release on the essential film music collection of DIMITRI TIOMKIN, the arrangements and performances are top notch inclusive of HDCD/Dolby Surround.

When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!

4 out of 5 stars A rare find!.......2007-01-13

From a rock trio that toured the south in the late 70's, this is a prize in my collection. All of the songs I find pleasing, talented and not overbearing.

5 out of 5 stars Killer classic Guitar Riff Rock.......2005-12-02

So glad to have this on disc now! I had the vinyl but it got ruined. I never thought it would be reissued. I was amazed!. This 3 pc band simply rocked! One of those rare albums where there isn't a bad song on it. Great guitar leads, bass and drums are smokin'. Wished they had keep it going. If you love guitar rock, not the drop D crap of today, you'll love this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Axis: A Circus World.......2005-07-13

Hard driving rock. One of the best albums of 1978........

5 out of 5 stars best rock album ever.......2004-10-23

this record kicked when I bought it 20 years ago and it still does today. The guy in Dnver sounds like a disgruntled friend or somone from a band that never got out of town. Axis was Rock and Roll. Like most great art however it is totally overlooked. Jay Davis is the best bassist in the land! I can turn up "Soldier of love" at a party today and people want the cd, its that good.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Great Old Rock Album.......2004-10-12

Axis flourished during the twilight of the 70s rock bands, right on the cusp of the punk rock revolt which soon overtook Hollywood, which is the only reason, combined with the cowardice and corruption of radio program-barons, that this band did not overwhelm the rock scene in 1978; fluff & syrup masters like Journey, Kansas, Toto and other assorted garbage were being pumped over the airwaves, while albums like CIRCUS WORLD were neglected by precious critics. Circus World is straight up rockin, and continues Danny's sound which appears on the three Derringer albums, Derringer, Sweet Evil, and Live: Danny's songs Sailor, Drivin Sideways, and One Eyed Jack show his incredible talent for melody.

Danny Johnson has a brilliance for knowing exactly where to put a note in a solo. His solos themselves often form sub-melodies, as ring out in BUSTED LOVE and RAY'S ELECTRIC FARM. This album is likley the most under-rated in rock history. Don't believe the pomposity of the critics, or the asinine claim by another reviewer here that Danny "plotted" his music with RCA. This music is too spontaneous and the perfection of Danny's Derringer-days sound to be a product of sell-out. The title track may be over-produced, but the defect is minor in an overall very strong set of old style rock n roll songs. JUGGLER uses a knife-like, precise rhythm which a hundred heavy metal bands of the 80s Sunset Strip could only slop and fake: Danny uses his guitar like a scapel, they use a sledgehammer. Jay Davis' TRAIN is a blues/ballad about a gun-slinger which is very powerful in its gloom and crescendos. SOLDIER OF LOVE is like a combination of Jimi's wah-wah and Clinton's funk, and Danny's trade-mark choruses. In ARMAGEDDON, the chord-count actually sounds like shellings and explosions. Danny sometimes and accidentally anticipated the punk sound by playing in lower registers, which we first hear on ONE EYED JACK, and appears on this album with songs like CATS IN THE ALLEY and RAY'S ELECTRIC FARM. But Circus World is really the last great old rock album.

Don't hesistate. Get this album.

AXIS was the last band to sublimely rock The Whisky and Starwood from 1978/early 79, before The Germs, X, and The Bags changed the paradigm; Axis played monthly at these clubs, and the live versions of these songs were swingin. IN FACT DANNY JOHNSON IS LOOKING FOR ANY LIVE TAPES OF THESE SHOWS, as his collection has been lost; anyone knowing of any write me:severus03@aol.com or call 949 293 3076, Jason Lynn. Thanks. Keep on rockin.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent exploration of Arlen.......1999-07-20

Julie Wilson offers another masterclass performance of songs by Harold Arlen with his numerous lyricists. Arlen's name is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, but his talents as a songwriter were magnificent. Julie Wilson and William Roy mine the Arlen songbook to produce an album of sterling quality, delivering delightful duets on such gems as 'Push De Button' and 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady'. Wilson offers brilliant readings of ballads and rhythm songs, capturing the mood and flavour of each song perfectly. Her sensuous take on 'Last Night When We Were Young' is particularly compelling. Roy's piano embellishments are, as ever, full of wit, sensitivity and formidable musicianship. A stunning offering.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating, multi layered performance, never boring.......1999-03-15

no matter how many time you listen to her, you'll hear something new each time. Julie Wilson is the consumate cabaret singer.

2 out of 5 stars An amazing hoot; one of a kind........2003-12-13

You gotta be sitting down for this hysterical disaster. Camp entertainment value is a solid 5 stars but as a serious work, it doesn't even register a twinkle. Pascucci's vocal histrionics rival those of Patty Duke's as Neely. Best cut: "I'll Plant My Own Tree" done to a disco beat. Really.

5 out of 5 stars VERY Pleasantly Surprised.......2002-04-05

I've loved both movies ("Inside Daisy Clover" and "Valley of the Dolls") ever since watching them in the 60's. I took a chance in buying this record because I had never heard of David Pascucci, but the material really interested me. I listened to the sound clips and was really quite impressed with what I heard, so I bought it. After listening to the Full record, I was VERY Pleasantly Surprised that this was quite a well made and enjoyable recording. Simply stated: ...it made me feel good! It puts me in a good mood. David's voice is quite good. It's a cross between Barry Manilow and Neil Sedaka. except David's acting ability with a song seems to surpass theirs (Eg: "Daisy", "Theme from Valley Of The Dolls"). It was also very exciting to hear songs that were never heard before from the films. My grandkids expecially like "The Circus Is A Wacky World" and dance around the room when they hear it. His liner notes were very funny and enjoyable to read. It's also nice to hear a singer who's getting back to using a real full-live orchestra instead of just synthesizers. A very exciting new artist with a bright singing career ahead of him.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Even Go There.......2002-04-02

While it was an interesting idea to record the songs from "Inside Daisy
Clover" and "Valley of the Dolls" this was a real miss.
David Pasucci lacks the range to pull this off. I'm sure it
will be appearing in the bargin bin before it hits the shelf
of your local record store.
You'd do better to get the Original Soundtrack album from "Valley" (now available on CD) or even a 1968 version by Patty Duke herself
released through United Artists called "Patty Duke Sings Songs

from Valley of the Dolls and other Selections" which may be hard to find but it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album! Great Singer!.......2002-03-26

This album is a very original idea. And well presented. Mr. Pascucci has a great unique voice. A very comforting voice. His idea to do this material is a first, and what great material it is. I admire his corageousness to venture into obscure material rather than performing over-recorded songs. The last Dory & André Previn collection was an attempt in 1962 by a singing duo "Jackie and Roy Krall Like Sing Songs by Dory and André Previn". This, by far, is superior both in presentation, and interpretation. David really makes these songs come alive and delivers "Theme from Valley of the Dolls" with a realness I've never heard before. The albums high point is the haunting song "Daisy" with never before heard lyrics by Dory Previn. Plus another song called "A Happy Song" which also has never been heard before, is a wonderful dance waltz reminding me of the Cinderella Waltz by Rodgers and Hammerstein. David also does a great disco rendition of "I'll Plant My Own Tree". Couldn't stop playing it. The orchestrations are fantastic! This album is just plain enjoyable!! I highly recommend it!!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM!!!.......2002-03-24

I LOVED this album. I think it was very daring of this singer (David Pascucci) to attempt to put out material that is as obscure as this simply because he had a great passion for it. He's got a great voice and has a unique sound. Definitely not a "generic" sounding voice like so many of these tenor vocalists have. What he lacks in technique, he makes up for in character, sound, passion and 'realness' with the lyrics. The orchestrations are AMAZING!! Mr. Pascucci and his producer Steven Applegate has brought a fresh new approach to these songs, and has given life to songs never before heard. The song "Daisy" is simply gorgeous as David presents it for the first time ever with lyrics by Dory Previn. I guess she had written them for the film but they were never used. Mr. Pascucci actually wrote to Dory for the lyrics and she sent them to him. I admire his ability to explore this material as much as possible. And then there's "A Happy Song" which again David presents for the first time ever because it was cut from the film. This song really DOES make me happy!! Another great song is his disco rendition of "I'll Plant My Own Tree"....WOW!! Fantastic arrangement. David could have easily made this simply a reproduction of the soundtracks, but he doesn't. He brings a new fresh approach to these songs making it a unique album in its own right. Bravo Mr. Pascucci for going out-on-a-limb and bringing this music to everyone's attention. While all these other singers are "playing it safe" and doing yet another rendition of 'As Time Goes By', Mr. Pascucci is going against the grain and presenting us with songs like "The Circus Is A Wacky World". GET THIS ALBUM!! You will simply enjoy it!! Both Dory AND André Previn must be very proud of this presentation of their work, if they've indeed heard it. Can't wait to hear David Pascucci's future recordings.

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.
