Although this is his first nationally distributed album, Eric Lindell is probably already tired of hearing himself tagged as "blue-eyed soul." But there is truth in that description. Sounding somewhat similar to Delbert McClinton and, with his lanky frame and scraggly beard, looking a bit like a tattooed young Bruce Springsteen/Tom Waits mashup, Lindell has the pipes, the style, and the songs to break out of his bluesy niche and into the mainstream. Recorded at various times in California and New Orleans with a revolving cast of musicians, Change in the Weather falls between a laid-back West Coast-styled soul, gritty Crescent City R&B, and a bit of frisky reggae. Despite the scattershot recording of these tracks, Lindell focuses the album's styles with dynamic and subtly emotional vocals that float with insistent assurance.

Horns punctuate the Stax-styled "All Alone" and the breezy Caribbean groove of "It Won't Be Long" adds layers to the already warm, soulful approach. While he never takes a solo, Lindell's ever-present rhythm guitar drives the sound, filling the spaces but leaving room for his low-key, commanding voice. He's clearly enjoying himself, and that enthusiasm shoots out of the speakers due to the singer's snappy, never fussy production and smartly arranged tunes that call you back for another listen. On the basis of Change in the Weather, the forecast for Eric Lindell is--like his music--brisk, crisp, and balmy. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

California-born, New Orleans-schooled singer/songwriter/vocalist Eric Lindell is a roots rocker with dozens of original songs that combine soul shaking rhythm & blues, reggae grooves, swamp pop and blues. Lindell is a fan favorite in his northern California turf and his adopted home of New Orleans (where he was featured on the cover of OffBeat magazine and performed on the main stage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival). He is accomplished on guitar, harmonica, keyboards and bass, and has performed with some of the Crescent City's top musicians as well as some of the jam band community's biggest names (including members of Galactic). The winner of the "1999 John Lennon Songwriting Competition" for his song Kelly Ann, Lindell is now ready to bring his rough-hewn voice and memorable original songs to the rest of the music-loving world with the release of his Alligator Records debut, CHANGE IN THE WEATHER.

CHANGE IN THE WEATHER will delight and surprise music fans hungry for an extraordinary, original artist who is just getting ready to explode. Lindell's songs are cliche-free, completely original and yet have an instant familiarity to them. The laid-back grooves and hook-laden melodies hint of 1970's-era Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen, but are not throwbacks as much as they are powerful, rootsy, thought-provoking and danceable contemporary songs. Traces of Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Ray Charles and Sly and the Family Stone can be found in Eric's originals, with foot-stomping grooves coming around every corner and horns punching in all the right places. Guests on the CD include War drummer Harold Brown, Ivan Neville, and Galactic's Stanton Moore.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh and Fabulous.......2007-02-16

While tooling around on My Space one day, I went to one my "friend's" home pages, which "friend" is Tinsley Ellis. On Tinsley's page, I ran across an artist of whom I had never heard, but for some reason, I was curious about him. As I clicked on that artist's home page, one of the funkiest, most fun songs I have heard in a very long time began to blare from my speakers. I immediately added that song to my own player. That song is called "Casanova," and that artist is none other than Eric Lindell. Eric's music highlights everything that is wrong with music today. The focus is on his musicianship, his smokey vocals, and his incredible songwriting skills. His music takes me to places I've never been but want to go. The selections on this CD go from making one want to get up and jam to kicking back and enjoying the company of close friends or a significant other. If asked to give you the "highlights" on this CD, I will tell you "all of them." From the funky beat and anthem that is "Two Bit Town" to the jazzy, bluesy strains of "Sunny Daze," Eric ensures that no one will ever take your smile or change your funky style. This is a must-have for all true music lovers who appreciate the talents of a unique, multi-talented artist. Eric is primed to take blues to a whole new level. I don't know about you, but I'm going with him.

5 out of 5 stars Makes Your Shoes Move.......2007-02-14

Eric Lindell who looks like a recent high school grad from the beaming picture on the cover of the CD will turn 38 this year. Lindell began working in Sonoma County, California before relocating to New Orleans. He won the 1999 John Lennon songwriting competition. With four CDs & one EP under his belt on small labels, this is first recording for the Alligator blues label. The tunes on this disc put a smile on your face and keep your toes tapping with a bluesy soul groove. The opener "Give It Time" boasts percussion by War's Harold Brown and Lindell's relaxed optimistic vocal slur, "Things will get better, a change in the weather, it just might suit you good." Another favorite of mine is "Feel Like I Do" with Brown's pounding percussion and Lindell's catchy chorus, "Baby, one two three four times a night, I wonder if you feel all right like I do." "Sunny Daze" also has sparkling percussion sounding like nouveau Santana with Lindell's slick guitar licks "Some rainy days you know I dig the rain; It's rolling down my window pain; Some rainy days I have no luck; Hell, I can't get up." While these are my very favorite tracks, the rest of the CD is strong with a soulful blues groove that's sure to make your shoes move. Run to get this one! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Nasty (as in awesome) Debut.......2006-12-11

Wow ... holy wow. This cd sizzles with fresh music new to the blues scene. The riffs are intoxicating(ly) great. I couldn't stop playing "Feel Like I Do," which is the third track, but it didn't take that long to proclaim this a winner. Start at No. 1, "All Alone," and the music grows from there because Lindell has a multi-faceted approach to his music with a touch of rock, pop, blues, raggae, horns/brass, and a voice knee deep in soul. His singing comes straight from the heart. The arrangements are tight. Go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Better Than I expected.......2006-09-14

Fell in love with the first song that I heard on the radio (Change in the Weather). Love every song on the CD. It's a fun CD.

5 out of 5 stars simply excellent.......2006-08-09

This is an absolutely excellent collection of songs. While it is reminiscent of other blues artists, and there might even be a very slight touch of Grateful Dead influence, the sound is fresh. You won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Hinting at future greatness.......2005-03-04

I first ran into this album back in 1989 after hearing "Change the Weather" on the radio. I was being a lovesick geek at the time and the comical absudity of this track seemed to mirror my circumstanses, so in other words I "connected" with the song. At this time I was mostly into the alternative rock (back when the word did mean something) along with some Goth and Industrial stuff.
A few years later I moved to Seattle and rock was struggling amidst the post grunge hangover and I began to get my first exposure to the whole DJ thing. I started to become interested in electronic dance music when "Dubnonobasswitmyheadman" came along and rocked my world. It never occured to me that this was the same group that did "Change the Weather" until I read an interveiw the Underworld after "Second Toughest of the Infants" was released. Karl Hyde and Rick Smith commented that the music from their 80s incarnation was mostly guided by the record companies with the aim beimg commercial. Disgruntled, Underworld broke up and the members went on to other things. Later,Karl Hyde and Rick Smith regrouped and along with DJ Darren Emerson began to create music on their own terms.
Personally, Underworld 2.0 had a tremendous affect on me, to the point of me getting a pair of decks and becoming a dj in my late 30s. I am also beggining to produce and to this day, Underworlds music contiues to be a source of inspiration.
Recently I found "Change the Weather" and gave it a fresh listen. It was better than I had remembered it. It starts off in that cheesy Top Gun electro-power-pop trip in which the 80s were synominous. But soon it transends all that and especially in later half of the track when they really turn it on. The repetitive groove with shifting variations prefigures Underworld 2.0 and I think this track is begging for a remix.
Like other luminaries in the Electronic Dance Music (I dont use "electronica" because it sounds to much like an MTV buzzword. Also refering to all EDM as Techno is like refering to ice cream as rocky road. Techno is just a flavor like Drum and Bass, House, Trance, Breaks and many other genres and sub genres) Underorld had a foundation in live music as does Fatboy Slim and others, showing how small the gap truly is between digital music and music played by bands. I hear a lot of crap from the "If I can't air guitar to it, it aint music" dorks out there who think the tools determine the authenticity of music more than the heart behind it.

1 out of 5 stars Is This The Same Band?.......2003-12-11

I bought this CD based on the first few reviews here on Amazon. The CD is a selection of horrible 80s music. I've never even let the songs play all the way through because they are so BAD. Think I paid something like $10 for it here on Amazon and now can't get rid of it for more than $3.25. Now that's a bad investment. Save your money unless you want to buy it from me dirt cheap.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should own this album........2002-11-06

This album is great. Underworld before their sound went down the techno toilet. Good lyrically and melodically. Underworld is proof that even the best bands can make mistakes. Unfortunately Underworld just keeps on making them by releasing the worthless electronica for which they are now known.

1 out of 5 stars Not the same band as of today........2002-02-20

This is not the same Underworld you might think. There is no hint at techno-rock. The style is remniscent of early 80's flock of seagull's.

I love Underworld don't get me wrong, they are one of my favorite groups. But this CD is not even good by 80's standards.

4 out of 5 stars Don't belive everything you read.......2000-09-30

Man, this album has some bad reviews.

Ok, this album would have been much more highly acclaimed if it had come out in 1983, instead of 1989, but i still really like it. This album IS 80'S SYNTH POP! It is not the same techno stuff that Underworld released in the 1990's. These guys have been around for a long time. Back in 1984 (or maybe 83) they Karl Hyde and Rick Smith were in a band called Freur. They made cheesy 80's music. Maybe you might remember a song called "Doot Doot". That's them! Or "Hey Ho Away We Go" or "Devil in Darkness". This 80's music continues with Underworld's first 2 albums, Underneath the Radar and Change the Weather.

This album is good though. I like it better than Underneath the Radar (which often gets much better reviews), and would highly recommend it to anyone that's a fan of 80's pop music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderous, magical melodies - diverse and creative.......2000-04-16

Beyond the silky, fluid sax, sparkling keyboards and beautiful compositions, this CD has one thing sorely lacking in similar offerings - MELODY. Take the lush, nostalgic, poignant melody of 'The Innocent', (beautifully executed by Mr. Van Such)- this alone is worth the price of admission. Add to that the romance of 'Kisses in the Moonlight' and the mystery of 'Triage' and 'Baxter's March', and you will not be disappointed. I highly recommended this CD to all who appreciate quality music. END

Exploring the nature of self-doubt, material culture, and expectations, both realistic and false, it's an album of hope, in which each song progresses from, answers, or refers to the others to creat a deep, unified statement. It will seduce you at the opening piano flourish and hold your attention through till the final fadeout.
