Product Description
This Vienna-based trio take their name from the Trappist fraternity who devote themselves to silence. As such, restraint is key in the band's vocabulary. On "Ballroom", Trapist flesh out their sparse recordings with vibraphone, synthesizers, modulators, and software-based treatments. The group's unique blend of improv and delicate electronics is a welcome and refreshing change for fans of electronic, jazz, and improvisation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this guy.......2007-03-21

Jason MRAZ is very soulfull and fun. Very talented. I love his music!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars simply the best.......2006-12-21

This is by far my favorite Mraz album. I love all of them, but after being introduced to this, I was blown away. This is a must for any fan and if you're thinking about buying this, just buy it, you won't regret it! Mraz is such a talented performer, a wonderful vocalist/guitar player and he is by far one of the most kind, humble people you will ever meet.I've been lucky enough to see him in concert multiple times and every time was just amazing.

5 out of 5 stars A must for fans of Mraz!.......2006-11-09

This guy's amazing to listen to on CD, and even better live--if you can imagine that! With a unique mix of attitude and charm, meaningful lyrics and captivating vocals, he gets you higher than his falsettos. If you're a fan of Jason, then you will definitely want this CD, as it contains tracks not found anywhere else. Reason enough to get this CD are the tracks "Not So Usual" and "Unfold". You'll want to listen to this one over and over.

5 out of 5 stars I can't turn it off.......2006-09-04

I was already a fan of Mraz before this, but after I bought this i don't want to listen to anything else. This live show is incredible both audio and video. Java Joe's is good too with just him and Toca but listening to him with the full band is incredible. If you have a passing interest in Mraz, start with this. If you have a serious interest and you don't have this, do not hesitate and get it immediately.

4 out of 5 stars Mr. AZ.......2006-08-22

Saw Mr. AZ for the first time, as an opener for the Stones and loved him. Might I add, I am 60 years old. Never too old to learn a new musician.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Live Album From A Righteous Rock Guitarist.......2007-07-11

LIVE AT ROSELAND BALLROOM is a great live CD by Government Mule, with no overdubs and no touch-ups. Instead, what you hear is the unvarnished honesty of a true power trio playing their hearts out like there's no tomorrow. True, this can lead to some overindulgence and excessive jamming, but there are several great songs that more than make up for the occasional excess. In addition, guitarist-singer Warren Haynes' advocacy of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Classic Mule, hard hitting three man power........2007-06-15

Gov't Mule is an awesome band. Great lyrics and singing along with powerful guitar work by Warren Haynes. Fantastic drum work by Matt Abts. Heavy deep end by Allen Woody (too bad he had to leave us so soon).

If you haven't listened to the Mule, this is a terrific album to cut your teeth on.

5 out of 5 stars old school Mule.......2007-05-12

As it says in the liner, 'No overdubs, no editing, no apologies. Warren would like to take responsibility for being out of tune during Painted Silver Light. Matt would like to take responsibility for the confusion at the end of Dont Step On The Grass. Everything else is Woody's Fault !'
Master tapes were recently Calbitized and sound wonderful. This music absolutely demands to be played loud. Bonus Voodoo Chile makes for nice filler. Awesome reissue, crank it up !

5 out of 5 stars Reissue of the 2nd Mule album with "Voodoo Chile" bonus.......2007-05-11

Chronologically speaking, this was the second Gov't Mule album (a live document of their New Year's Eve 95/96 concert at NYC's Roseland Ballroom). True Haynes fans / Mule-heads will pay for the double dip in order to obtain the 15 minute "Voodoo Chile" with Jack Casady on bass and Chuck Leavell on organ (NOT the version found on the "Deepest End" DVD). The original album offered up a tasty 8-minute version of Steppenwolf's "Don't Step On The Grass Sam," one Allman Bros. track ("Kind Of Bird") and four tracks from the debut album. There's a reason why Haynes has found a home not only in Gov't Mule but also in The Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends, The Allman Brothers...they're all jam bands and he's the consummate jam player. Everybody and his brother has covered "Voodoo Child, Slight Return" at one time or another, but Warren's the only player of consequence I know of who's tackled "Voodoo Chile" WITH original bassist Casady in tow. Later in Gov't Mule's career, an attempt was made to offer songs at the more traditional 3 to 4 minute length. Not here. The shortest track runs at approximately 6 minutes, with two topping 15. This is air guitar heaven. Jump in.

A decade before his postmodern romp Moulin Rouge brought the film musical high-kicking and (occasionally) screaming into the 21st century, director Baz Luhrmann debuted his oft-dizzying transgenre musical tack in this, his film debut. Set against the obsessive world of Australian dance competitions, the first of what's become known as Luhrmann's "Red Curtain Trilogy" (which also includes Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge) stands hoary Hollywood clichés on their head. The music is an irresistibly tipsy cocktail that mixes orchestral contributions by Australian film composer David Hirschfelder (Elizabeth) with the songs of Aussie pop writing/performing/producing legends Harry Vanda and George Young (the Easybeats, Flash and the Pan, AC/DC, and others) and dashes of everything from chugging Latin rhythms to Cyndi Lauper. Trading on Moulin's reputation and popularity, this upgraded edition features an expanded track listing that now includes "London Derriere," Hirschfelder's loopy/schmaltzy take on "Danny Boy," exotica conductor Stanley Black's infectious "Os Quindins de Ya Ya," and bandleader Jack Hilton's vintage romp through the standard "Happy Feet." --Jerry McCulley

This is a good mix of music, however it may not be for everyone which is why it didn't receive a higher rating.

4 out of 5 stars STRICTLY BALLROOM.......2005-09-19

Very good movie - fantastic lead dancer. Music is good but a mix and not all danceable. All in all good movie & good soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars If you love the film, you'll love the CD!.......2004-03-15

Great variety of wonderful music you will remember from the feel-good film and an especially welcome break from sitting in traffic if you keep it handy in the car.

5 out of 5 stars Baz Knows How to Put a Good Soundtrack Together.......2003-05-01

If you enjoyed the movie you'll enjoy this soundtrack. Each track vividly reminds you of the movie scene in which it was played. And even if you didn't like the movie, there are some fun tunes on here. There are several classics such as 'Love Is In the Air' by John Paul Young, 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps' by Doris Day, 'Os Quindins De Ya Ya' by Stanley Black as well as a sweet cover of 'Time After Time'. It's all good for listening to, relaxing to, but most of, for dancing to!

5 out of 5 stars Jesse.......2007-05-13

What can you say about CCR. Absolutly amazing. I own over 40,000 songs and this is one of my top 5 bands being that they are so original and you can tell they love their music. I love punk rock, grunge, and classic rock and these guys really are in their own genre. I love their remake of "Wanna rock'n'roll" This is really the CD you need to check out if you haven't heard these guys before... Its just to bad there is no "Boys from Oklahoma" ...

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection of My Favorites.......2007-02-15

This double disc live CD includes all my favorite CCR songs, and also pulls up some of their friends to sing with them. Unlike most live CD's there is not a lot of talking, just a lot of great music. This live compilation is a vital for all CCR fans.

4 out of 5 stars Cross Canadian Ragweed.......2007-01-10

If you like Cross Canadian Ragweed, buy this cd. It is a two disc set, with mostly previously recorded tracks, but also some new ones. We are really enjoying it!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2006-12-10

Finding out where some of the songs came from (inspiration) was great! I hope everyone read the thank yous...that was just as great as the cd itself. These guys and their families are some of the best people.

4 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll is alive and well.......2006-12-06

If you think the days of true rock and roll are dead and gone, check out this CD. As someone who can barely stand to listen to rock radio anymore, Ragweed is a welcome sign that good music is still being made, whether the mainstream wants us to hear it or not. Cody Canada has really turned into a shredder on the electric guitar, and this CD is worth buying just for the sake of listening to his solos. Canada's playing makes Robert Earl Keen's "Lonely Feeling" into one of the most powerful rock ballads I've heard. All of the tracks show off the skills of this band, and it's amazing how far they have come since "Live at the Wormy Dog" (which is another great CD if you want to hear the early days). The last few songs on the first CD are acoustic, which gives you a chance to hear a side of Ragweed that you maybe haven't heard before. Canada's cover of Neil Young's "Needle and the Damage Done" really shows off his voice and acoustic guitar skills.

If I have one complaint about this CD, it might be that the CD is a true live CD (no remixing), and sometimes it's hard to hear the awesome musicianship or Canada's vocals over the noise of the crowd. A lot of people will probably love it for the same reason though. All in all, anyone who loves good old fashioned rock and roll will love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Great dance music, with some quirks.......2007-04-03

I enjoy this disc, and it is great fun to dance to. Most of the tempos are appropriate, but there are some interesting quirks here that other reviewers have not mentioned. I list these after the title, duration, and suggested dance:

There will never be another you, 2:55, Foxtrot
I've heard that song before, 3:02, Foxtrot
In a mellow tone, 3:16, Foxtrot
I let a song go out of my heart, 2:02, Foxtrot
Teach me tonight, 3:01, Foxtrot (Oh! It begs to be danced as a West Coast Swing)
On a little street in Singapore, 3:20, Foxtrot
Mister Sandman, 2:40, Foxtrot (Hey, this is perhaps 58 bpm, so dance it as a Quickstep)
Sunny side of the street, 2:43, Foxtrot (Again, it works great as a West Coast Swing)
Crazy World Theme, 2:10, Waltz
Song from Moulin Rouge, 3:22, Waltz
Put your dreams away, 2:39, Waltz
Charade, 2:34, Waltz
Tenderly, 2:56, Waltz (A beautiful recording, but it is somewhat difficult to hear the beat)
In a perfect world, 4:18, Waltz (Very slow at the start, perhaps 28 bpm?)
Bicyclettes de Belsize, Les, 3:10, Waltz

4 out of 5 stars Foxtrot Fun.......2006-07-07

My husband and I really enjoyed this CD. We're ballroom beginners and have trouble finding music to practice to. This CD has great songs (with singing - neither one of us cares for the "instrumental" versions of popular songs) and it allows us to practice dancing to a variety of tempi.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great collection of music!.......2006-03-23

If you are looking for a collection of standards that are by the origional artists, this is a great CD! I'm dissapointed how many collections are out there where the music is watered down versions that sound much like elevator music. This collection should definitely be apart of yours. It's great to finally be able to dance to the origionals that made the dancing popular to begin with. I should point out that this isn't a collection of greatest hits, but it shouldn't be overlooked.

It's the easy way out to dwell on a group's supposed "maturation," but considering the members of Silverchair were 14 when they released their debut album and are a whopping 20 years old with this outing, it's entirely appropriate, not to mention accurate. From a band of any age, though, Neon Ballroom is a stunner of an album. And it's also leaps and bounds beyond the Australian trio's two previous efforts, good if derivative grunge/classic-rock fare interpreted by impressionable young musicians. From the epic, dramatic opening cut, "Emotion Sickness," to "Ana's Song (Open Fire)," Neon Ballroom is a 12-song collection rife with emotions laid bare and songs fully realized with lush strings and piano (courtesy of David Helfgott, the inspiration for the movie Shine.) Silverchair singer/songwriter Daniel Johns outdoes himself with the sonic diversity and fragility of his tunes, especially the ethereal, delicate ballads, with the powerful "Dearest Helpless" smacking of Kurt Cobain at his most beautifully tormented. From the gentle "Miss You Love" to the punky-aggro "Spawn Again" to the flat-out speedy rocker "Satin Sheets," Silverchair have created a haunting, edgy, seductive soundtrack to a young life deeply felt. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Silverchair Continue Progression on NEON BALLROOM...4.5 stars..........2007-01-09

Back in 1995 when FROGSTOMP came out, Silverchair's three members were only 15 years old, but needless to say many were impressed with their skills at such an age. Their debut was a fierce blend of aggression and angst packaged neatly in nuggets of throttling guitar rock. FREAK SHOW still had its fair share of metallic grunge but also balanced it off with some varied textures. NEON BALLROOM continues their experiments with melody while sprinkling in some orchestration, keyboards, and lush arrangements to add depth to their sonic assault. While NEON BALLROOM does have its share of Kurt Cobain-esque moments, more often than not its a very impressive trip through all 12 tracks.

Take for instance the lush opening track "Emotion Sickness", which features piano great David Helfgott on keyboards. Here vocalist/guitarist Daniel Johns, bassist Chris Joannou, and drummer Ben Gillies showcase a completely sparse yet lavish six minutes of glossy but dramatic rock. It doesn't hurt that the song sounds like it could be many different suites, but there are moments during the song where Silverchair sound much older than their years. First single "Anthem For The Year 2000" is an arena-sized nugget of stadium metal that makes you want to stomp your feet more than not. It's the gentler moments that really surprise you, from the gentle, sweeping grandeur of "Miss You Love" to the silvery power ballad that is "Ana's Song (Open Fire)", which tells the tale of Daniel Johns battle with anorexia. But Silverchair still love to show that they can rock, such as the fierce and angry guitars that dominate the grindcore of "Spawn Again", which is a fiery slice of animal defense. "Satin Sheets" has punk attitude written all over it with the thrashing guitars and pounding drums. Again, so many texures to be found on BALLROOM. Other tracks like "Point of View" and "Black Tangled Heart" mix together the majestic and the monster.

Overall, Silverchair really display a sense of craft and majesty on NEON BALLROOM. Whether you like this side of Silverchair or not depends on your dedication to the changes a young band will go through. BALLROOM displays some real strength and progress, one that would come to full realization on DIORAMA.

P.S. Look for Silverchair's new album YOUNG MODERN due out April.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2006-05-24

For lack of any better words, this is an album you MUST HAVE. Besides the fact that these guys are amazing songwriters, they present it so well and fluid-like. Everything seems perfectly in place. Great lyrics too.

5 out of 5 stars Silverchair's best work..........2006-05-20

I am the proud owner of every Silverchair album and I have to say, this one is my favorite. Every song is amazing. Their incredible talent really shines through. I have always considered Daniel Johns a lyrical genius but I relate to his lyrics more so on this album than any other. If a song has the ability to send chills down my spine, it's a damn good song in my opinion. Well, this whole album gave me chills. "Steam will Rise" is my personal favorite. The ending when the music cuts out and all you hear is Daniel's voice...amazing. His voice is his own instrument. I definitley recommend this album. If you weren't a Silverchair fan before, you will be now.

5 out of 5 stars "A breeding ground for hate...".......2006-04-26

Silverchair's Neon Ballroom has to be the most personal and heartwrenching album of all time. Frontman Daniel Johns battle with anorexia is the main theme explored on this introspective disc. The track Open Fire (Ana's Song) John's talks openly and bluntly about having and coping with the diaease known as anorexia, "I love you to the bones, and Ana wrecks your life like an anorexia life." Miss you love is a gorgeous song with self-loathing lyrics:"I'm not,not too sure how it feels to handle everyday like the one who just passed in the crowds of all the people..." Do you feel the same, and Paint pastel Princess are about overcoming loneliness and staying clear of prescription pills. The best song on the album is Black Tangled Heart which John's declares:"Maybe you'll kill yourself before i get a turn, maybe i'll fall in love and never learn." Point of View and Anthem for the year 2000 are also standout tracks. John's voice is so strong and powerful, he is using all the strength he possibly has in his tiny body to get his words out. A stunning and therapeutic masterpiece, Neon Ballroom will have you begging for more.

5 out of 5 stars Great music that doesn't age!.......2006-01-21

I first purchased this CD back in 1999, and the music still seems as moving and emotional to me now as it did back then. You can't help but sing along with their interesting lyrics and different sound of music. It was an extra special CD to go along with my teen angst of middle/high school.

It's rather old but the tempos are good. Music is fine. Very danceable.

4 out of 5 stars Historic, danceable, and a bargain!.......2007-04-02

Arthur Murray (born Moses Teichman in 1895) became a franchising legend in the 30s and 40s as he sold rights to teach his "footstep" dance patterns across the United States. He opened his first franchised dance studio in 1938, and these numbered more than 3,500 at their peak. Following the Second World War, he put heavy emphasis on the "Latin American" dance steps that he adapted from several long visits to Cuba. Part of his genius was borrowing the "strict-tempo" dance rhythm ideas he heard from Victor Silvester and the best of the British dance bands. With the exception of a slight retard at the end of the song, a strict tempo made it easier for men to count their steps and help their partners look better.

The tempos - appropriate in 1960 - tend to be a little faster than current DanceSport preferences. With due respect to other esteemed reviewers, tracks 8 and 18 need not be labeled rock-n-roll. Try dancing West Coast Swing to track 8 and Lindy-hop to track 18 and your feet will feel oh so good! This collection is indeed a "fabulous" bargain at $11.99.

This is a very good collection of classic dance music by Arthur Murray Orchestras.

3 out of 5 stars The Fabulous Ballroom Collection-Arthur Murray Orchestra.......2006-08-07

I ordered the CD in order to have a variety of music for dancing and will be using it. It is not as good as a couple of other CDs I ordered; however, it is more than passable.

3 out of 5 stars Older music for American Style Dancing.......2006-03-31

I do not have this CD but I listened through the samples. It sounded like bunch of latin music with a little bit of standard music. However one thing that I will tell you about this CD is that if you are planning to dance any International style ballroom dancing, this CD is not for you. If you are dancing American style and enjoy old music from 50's buy it.

It's the sounds you remembered and loved. It's nothing you've never heard before but it's something you haven't heard in a while. Classic Aces-- what more can you say? I've still got it in vinyl but it never sounded this good.

5 out of 5 stars Toucan Do It Too/Burning the Ballroom Down.......2007-02-06

Two of the top Three albums this group made. Maybe the top 2.
The musicianship heard here is rarely felt or heard today.
The only thing that was ever bad about these albums,
was they did not get publicized well enough.

5 out of 5 stars Toucan Do It Too/Burning the Ballroom Down.......2006-11-06

The Amazing Rhythm Aces are still Amazing! I enjoyed them in the 70"s and now I can enjoy them again. It's great that the old albums are out on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Why don't you own this?.......2005-08-21

This, fellow ARA fans, is the real thing. The recordings are clear, the production very good and the songs are just as good as we remembered. There have been other recordings released on CD which should have never seen the light of day due to terrible original recordings, but don't worry this time. These recordings are a delight!

The Combination of "Stacked Deck" and "Too Stuffed to Jump" may overwhelm some people into thinking they have all of the classic ARA music if they own that CD. This is understandable because those two albums are incredible and have both of ARA's biggest hits: "Third Rate Romace" and "Amazing Grace (Used To Be Her Favorite Song)," but "Toucan Do It Too" combined with "Burning The Ballroom Down" is just as loaded with quality songs and performances.

My all-time favorite ARA song is "Burning The Ballroom Down" because of the music and, to me more importantly, from the stream of emotions that come from the singer's perspective. Russell Smith nails this song all the way from smugness ("I know why you're here by the look in your eye") at the beginning to near-desperation ("It might have to last me forever if I don't see you again") at the end. "Never Been To The Islands" kicks things off with a laid-back style that's easy on the ears, quickly followed by Smith's soulful rendition of "Never Been Hurt" for an excellent contrast.

Again, the musical styles vary across a wide spectrum with the music fitting the lrics and they are all good. The group that was too rock for country, too country for rock and just too eclectic for anywhere else was before its time, but it's given us some great songs.

Pick this up along with another great two-album ARA CD, "Stacked Deck/Too Stuffed To Jump" and their later, self-titled CD.
If you've never heard the Amazing Rhythm Aces, how do you know if you will like them? Do you like surprisingly thoughtful and often clever lyrics? Do you like excellent musicianship? Do you enjoy being exposed to different sounding songs on the same CD? You could do a whole lot worse than this CD and it would be hard to do much better.

5 out of 5 stars Tops.......2002-04-05

I came to the Aces many years after they made their first recordings, and it felt like stumbling on a gold mine or discovering at age 40 that there was such a thing as chocolate. I first heard "Burning the Ballroom Down" on a bootleg tape, driving to Dulles Airport before daylight, and it was like being transported elsewhere. This is my favorite album of the 1000+ albums I own.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Offering From an Equally Unique Band!.......2005-11-04

Great CD. My personal favorite from SNZ. An incredibly diverse assemblage of musical styles and influences. Complex arrangements and performances, but still manages to be melodic (it's very easy to catch yourself humming tunes from this CD out of no where).

I just hope that they can keep it up. The musical world desperately needs bands like this!

5 out of 5 stars Bedlam Ballroom.......2005-08-10

This is as good of an CD as their others. The music is great for both swing dance and different slow dances. If you really enjoy various styles of music like I do this is worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars hot diggity!.......2005-06-23

This probably isn't the Zippers' best CD, but it does have my favorite song in the world on it: Hush. It's a beautiful song with the most romantic string part I've ever heard (executed solely by the great Andrew Bird), and, in my opinion, it's today's greatest Gershwin-style ballad in existence.

Aside from the idiotic choice to put several seconds of an electronic beat at the beginning of "Bedbugs" (WHY, JIMBO? THAT AIN'T OLD-TIME MUSIC!), they're still just as jazzy as ever. However, I still stand by my belief that Perennial Favorites is their finest hour.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great.......2005-01-01

Well, I am a real fan of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, and have all of their albums (except their live one). This one just didn't quite do it for me. FOr my money, HOT is track-for-track their best; it has an energy and a cohesion that none of their other albums have acheived. Which doesn't mean that the other albums are anything to shake a stick at. Even this album, with the fantastic opener "Bedbugs" and the playful "Missings Link", is a very good listen. The song "Hush" is probably their greatest ballad, and so lush you'd think it came from some great old movie. However, as a whole, I just didn't enjoy this album AS MUCH AS their others; but for a band as fun as the SNZ, their worst is still worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Influences Come From All Over.......2004-08-28

I never saw a contract or specification saying that the Squirrel Nut
Zippers had to play Dixieland or Swing, or any other kind of music on their albums. Like most other bands, they play what they feel compelled to play. On this particular CD they play
Southern-Influenced music that is not like previous albums. Some
record buyers want bands to turn out same-sounding records so that when they listen to them there is no thinking involved. But
if an artist is allowed to express himself, or herself, wonderful
things can happen--like on this album. A little bit of R&B or
Rockabilly can be expected in Southern-influenced music. And there have been a lot of great Rockabilly groups to be influenced by over the years. Some of
the music here reminds me of Brave Combo (a band with no hint of
sticking to any genre, but still play great entertaining music.)
Bedlam Ballroom has the same great musicians as all the other
albums they have done. Maybe their next one will be like the
older ones, maybe it will be something completely different.
Variety, they say, is the spice. This CD is a great listen.
Buy it and grow. Or not. It's your cash.

Excellent music and composition. Lively and exciting music allows the dancers to tune in on various beats.

3 out of 5 stars The music is okay.......2007-05-07

I like the second song, tea for two. The others are okay, not too exciting.

2 out of 5 stars A poor choice for practicing cha cha.......2007-04-15

El Gato's Rhythm Orchestra is very hit and miss. Some of this is fun. Except for the first track, I like much of this as music. But this is NOT a good disc for most dancers, and a terrible disc for beginners. Many of the tracks have radical tempo changes (as noted below). Tracks 9-12 are faster than competition tempos, and so better as slow mambos for beginners.

Here are the titles, durations, and tempos:

1. El Musico, 3:22 (21 bpm). Too slow, and painfully sour trumpets.
2. Tea For Two, 3:15 (28 bpm).
3. Dance Of The Hours, 3:33 (28 bpm). There is a radical rhythm change to a fast samba from 1:25-1:55 in this track.
4. Vendedor De Bananas, 4:39 (29 bpm). This is too long for most beginners, and not all that interesting.
5. Amada Mia, 3:26 (30 bpm). There is a radical rhythm change to mambo from 1:20-1:40 in this track.
6. Ojos Oscuros, 2:54 (32 bpm). Beware, the tempo increases toward the end.
7. Swanee River, 3:03 (32 bpm). Odd beginning with no cha cha beat.
8. Vacaciones En Caracas, 3:06 (33 bpm). There is a radical rhythm change from 2:00-2:20 in this track.
9. Volaré, 3:36 (34 bpm). Some odd changes in tempo at random points.
10. Tiritomba, 1:49 (34 bpm).
11. Hello Dolly, 3:12 (34 bpm).
12. Blue Cha Cha, 3:45 (35 bpm). Again, some odd changes in tempo at random points.

5 out of 5 stars Now THAT'S dancing !!!.......2007-03-26

This CD entitled Strictly Dancing--Cha Cha offers an excellent introduction to cha cha dancing for people who want to dance the cha cha. The music bears that distinctive early 1960s Latin American beat and you will enjoy learning the cha cha as you listen to the music on this CD. Naturally, if you wish to just enjoy the music without dancing there's nothing wrong with that, either!

The CD opens with "El Musico;" this number uses the drums, percussion and horns to carry the bulk of the musical arrangement. The piano is great, too! The melody is infectiously catchy; and then the CD goes into a cha cha rendition of "Tea For Two" although this particular arrangement uses the drums and percussion more than the horns. The pace also increases somewhat so that you can begin to dance faster as you increase your ability to do the cha cha. El Gato's Rhythm Orchestra plays these two numbers very well.

Other great numbers on this CD include "Dance Of The Hours" with its lush intro and great horns; the relentlessly upbeat rendition of "Amada Mia" and even a cha cha rendition of Stephen Foster's classic entitled "Swanee River." Great!

"Volaré" is an excellent example of how El Gato's Rhythm Orchestra could fuse together an Italian classic with a distinctly Latin cha cha beat. The drums, percussion and horns again carry the melody; you will not be disappointed by this track. "Hello Dolly" continues in the same vein; this time El Gato's Rhythm orchestra blends together a classic American Broadway show tune with their wonderful Latin cha cha sound. Impressive!

The CD ends with "Blue Cha Cha;" this number has something of a Mexican flavor to it and the tempo is faster than ever for this last number. The horns are wonderful.

Although some reviewers give this CD only four stars I think I will make this a five star review for two reasons. First of all, the liner notes tell very clearly how to dance the cha cha. Although this is done from the man's perspective it was customary at the time for the man to "lead" the woman around on the dance floor. These cha cha dance instructions impressed me. Second of all, the tempo increases as the CD progresses; this offers everyone a chance to gradually increase their ability to dance the cha cha faster and more proficiently with time. The liner notes also give a brief history of the development of the cha cha dance.

Overall, this CD has great music for your easy listening enjoyment. Moreover, this CD also proves to be a handy instructional device you can use to learn how to dance the cha cha. Although the heyday of the cha cha is long gone, this is no reason to avoid learning it. May you get this CD and enjoy it as much as I do!

3 out of 5 stars Cha-cha recordings.......2007-03-22

A good CD to use when practicing newly learned dance steps. The songs are easy to dance to and pleasing to hear.
