You can't get any better than RH Kirk ( AKA Sandoz, Dark Magus, Trafficante, Al Jabr, and former founding member of Cabaret Voltaire ). He is one of the true originators and innovators within the genre, with roots in funk / early house and industrial dance music. In recent times his work takes a more trance/dub form with layers of rhythm and percussion that build into a mezmerising sound. This is a must for the initiated and a good start for someone looking to get familiar with the artist. The story behind this album is interesting, Kirk apparently went to jamaica in 1998-99 to explore the birthplace of music that had greatly influenced him in his youth. In his early days, the studio methods that he used in Cabaret Voltaire were very similar to Jamaican artists like Prince Far I and King tubby. After returning from Jamaica full of fresh inspiration, RH Kirk recorded 'Chant to Jah' under his Sandoz moniker. It is an excellent fusion of trance, dub, and dancehall reggae styles. Particular highlights include 'king dread', 'scientific exploitation', and 'spiritual vibe'. I also recommend the Sandoz album 'Dark Continent', if you can find it.

Richard Kirk gets lost in the echo chamber and the result is "Chant to Jah", impressive cyber dub -- vast landscapes of crazy tape delay effects, deep bass drops and skittering percussion -- that crackles with all the manic, lo-fi energy of the best Black Ark creations. A must-have for fans of Lee "Scratch" Perry, King Tubby, Mad Professor and Scientist.
