A glowering cover photo, on-the-run sound quality, and music to match. That's My Generation, and while it's hardly as consistent as The Who Sell Out, it's just as much fun to play. With the band steamrolling the title anthem, "The Kids Are Alright," "A Legal Matter," and a couple of James Brown covers, you can bet it was for them, too. Much too little.......2007-06-27

Sure, it has three classic singles that need to be heard time and time again by anyone who considers themselves a Who fan: "My Generation", that brash, loud, tough, angry anthem with the bass solo; "The Kids Are All Right", arguably Townshend's best pure pop song; and the piano-driven, funny "Legal Matter", Pete's first vocal with the group. Actually, I find the record's second half in general to be much stronger than the first, offering the humorous, light-hearted "It's Not True", the chaotic surf-blues instrumental "Ox", and the early confessional "Instant Party (Circles)". If only the other six were this good... but no. Two bad James Brown covers, the latter with the worst imitation of Mr. Dynamite I've ever heard ("I Don't Mind"; "Please, Please, Please"), a couple pained pop ballads ("La La La Lies"; "The Good's Gone"; "Much Too Much"). And while I like the distorted guitar solo on "Out on the Street", the rest of the song is thin. Half of this plus half of A Quick One would've made the record of the year. But this is a far cry from Sell Out, let alone Who's Next or Quadrophenia.

These Kids Were Alright (* * * 1/2).......2006-12-05

Forty-one years on, the debut record by The Who is still impressive. Classics like "My Generation" and "The Kids Are Alright" are certainly not to be second-guessed, and most of the other originals give the album plenty of muscle. "The Good's Gone" and the humorous "A Legal Matter" highlight Pete Townshend's superb riffing, and in the latter case, voice. "Much Too Much", "It's Not True", and the psychedelia-flavored "Instant Party (Circles)" are fine mod tunes. Finally, the instrumental romp "The Ox" is the clearest indication of the mayhem that The Who were to create on stage, if not ever again on record. The bits of feedback on this track surely perked up the ears of guys like Jimi Hendrix, as well as Lou Reed and John Cale, perhaps just enough to make them realize the potential it could have in their own work. This song - along with "My Generation" - serves to rightly place Townshend and Co. among the forefathers of punk.

However, "La La La Lies" and "The Kids Are Alright" indicate that The Who may have also been the originators of another genre for which they are rarely credited: power pop. All of this genre's elements are in place on these songs - azure vocal harmonies, echoey guitars, prominent bass lines, and marching drums. It was this formula that would be adopted by the likes of The Flamin' Groovies in the 1970s and Guided By Voices in the 90s, bands who were among the very best power poppers of their respective decades. Also included on My Generation are two James Brown covers. Now, I have quite frankly always found The Who's claims to be purveyors of "maximum R&B" to be disingenuous at the very least. These covers - "I Don't Mind" and "Please Please Please" - sound a bit forced, as if they were trying to prove their R&B credentials (not that I doubt their love of the genre, nor the fact that it inspired their sound). That said, there are some good R&B-inspired moments here, such as the opening track "Out in the Street".

At times, The Who Sings My Generation sounds a bit too rough around the edges for its own good. Granted, full-on Spector-esque production certainly wouldn't have served the band's energetic assault any more effectively. The Who's second album, A Quick One, would prove to be a bit of a holding pattern, but it's follow-up - The Who Sell Out - would be their triumphant great leap forward. Knowing how ambitious and refined their music would become, their debut sounds almost charming in its youthful recklessness. But whatever its shortcomings, their is no overlooking the fact that the single "My Generation" landed in the mid-60s London scene like a hand grenade, and proved that The Who wasn't just another rock band. Their influence would expand exponentially over the decades, and as an opening statement, The Who Sings My Generation remains a powerful one.

First hit the streets in 1965,as this was The Who's stunning debut record.I haven't heard this title in a LONG time,now.Great mod rock,British Invasion style.At the time(of course),this lp was reportedly the first of such to possess such energy.Remember on the old Smothers Brothers show,how the band was introduced as,"The Who..,THIS,folks is excitement"? It WAS.Still is.Tunes here I found most inspiring were the somewhat soulful "I Don't Mind",the melodic "La-La-La Lies",the historic(it's own right)"My Generation","The Kids Are Alright","It's Not True" and "The Ox"(never realized this track was on their very first album).Simply a must-have.

Raw Energy.......2006-07-14

A very different flavor of Brit rock. Whereas Lennon, McCartney, Ray Davies, and the Zombies had that air of refined English gentlemen, well-schooled and well-mannered (even when they were pretending to be bad-boy American rockers), Townshend and Entwhistle were clearly not as deft with their voices, although they played their instruments as well as the best of them, and their songwriting skills always seemed more juvenile than the rest. But that's what makes them unique, and their obvious disdain for that kind of McCartney-esque perfectionism in composition and arrangement and their obvious joy at playing loud, high-energy rock and roll reminds me of 70's punk. Just listen to this great first album and you'll feel the punk attitude coming through. Oh, and Keith Moon was the greatest rock drummer of the 60's. Maybe all those heavy-metal drummers of later years were just as fast and strong (and certainly had more elaborate drum sets and stage shows), Moon was a whole lot more fun.

The Generation May Have Aged, But The Music Hasn't. .......2006-06-28

The first official album by the Who shows them as simple hard Mod rockers who did more than just destroy their instruments on stage. Its hard to imagine that this predates the punk movement by well over a decade because most of the qualities of punk are here. Gritty loud three chord songs, simple melodies, and playing that was faster and harder than just about anything that had existed at that time. Sharing the spotlight with the punk qualities was the die hard Mod theme that would influence bands well into the 70s and 80s.

Mid 60s London was a swinging good place to be. While America had their hippie movement, hipsters from England were dressed up in outrageous neo-European clothing and were jamming at late-night clubs. Thats when the music came into frame. The British were obsessed with American R&B. So they started playing it themselves only with a rougher edge. Imagine if James Brown had gone punk and you get the idea. The Who were a working class group. Yeah, I know they later became rich and famous but their music, back then, was not about being rich and famous but was told from the level of the British teenagers who bought it, listened to it, and enjoyed it. Though The Who were not the first British band to try out an R&B sound (The Beatles and the Mersybeat movement predate them) they were the first to combine it with the British born hard rock genre of crunching guitars, feedback, crashing drums (Keith Moon is easily one of the best drummers of all time) and angry frustrated lyrics.

Rodger Daltery was, and still is, a major vocal influence. Though his voice would get better over time, never again would he sound this angry yet secure about his subject matter. Pete Townshend and John Entwistle were an amazing guitar and bass duel who could keep the pulsating and loud music from seeming to skimpy and watered down. Many rock fans regard them as the best lineup ever for a rock band.

The album is a collection of hard rockers of mostly R&B influence however some tracks like the anthemic title track, and the highly experimental, The Ox, with its almost atonal attack of white noise and disortion may have been seen as a prelude to the psychedelic movement that would shortly unfold. The songwriting may not have been as mature as it would shortly become but some songs like, The Kids Are Alright, and, A Legal Matter, were more serious in meaning than most R&B songs at that time.

Before The Who made the rock opera, Tommy, or the arena rock masterpiece, Who's Next, they were the band you hear as you play this album and wonder to yourself "would rock had survived this long had it not been for groups like this?".

Taken in one concentrated best-of dose, it becomes evident what a coup the B-52's pulled off when they turned their own concentrated craziness into genuine hits. This is some of the weirdest stuff ever to make the charts, much less be loved by the masses. It's all here though--the mad surf guitar of Ricky Wilson (and later Keith Strickland), the banshee wails of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, and, of course, the, um, well, let's say vocalizing of freaky Fred Schneider. "Party out of Bounds" with a "Rock Lobster" on "Planet Claire," or "Roam" over to the "Love Shack" in "Private Idaho." Whatever you do in the B-52's universe will at least be good, clean, perverse fun. Contains two new songs. --Michael Ruby

B-52 is the bomb.......2007-06-02

Awesome compilation of the B52s kind of off-beat, wacky, yet lovable and totally listenable music. The lyrics of many tunes are weird but funny. Scneider's goofy singing style somehow works well too. Lots of tracks here, including lesser-known gems. Especially cool tunes: Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, Mesopotamia [kinda eerie in a way], Love Shack [probably the one with most radio play back in the day], Roam, and Good Stuff. But all are solid. Very good CD to pop in and just let play, no need to be anywhere near the skip button.

B-52's - 'Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation' (Reprise).......2007-05-15

Review number 62. Fantastic eighteen track retrospect compilation of this reunited TOP of the line '80's new wave band. As for this genre of music, it JUST doesn't get much better than this. I saw the B-52's play a free gig at an outdoor mall just last summer and it was honestly one of the funnest concerts I've attended in sometime. As for this CD, you get to fully experience once again the college radio staples and some of the band's lesser known goodies, like "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Party Out Of Bounds", the unreleased 'original' edit for "Summer Of Love", "Love Shack", "Roam", the awesome "Is That You, Mo-Dean?" plus two new cuts, of which both are good. What, no "Dance This Mess Around" ? That's my personal B-52's favorite of all time. Nonetheless, 'Time Capsule' is still highly recommended.

B-52's.......2007-02-03

I saw Rock Lobster done "live" on Saturday Night live back in the early 80's. They did a good job. I thought that they were just another Punk band. But they showed their Pop sensiblities with "Rock Lobster." It didn't hurt that it turned out to be one Major hit! Of course, "Love Shack" and "Mesopotamia" were not far behind. A classic album all the way around - Five stars for the B-52's Tan-Ru!! (whatever that means...)

Hair Today, Here Tomorrow.......2006-06-10

Every once in a very long while a thoroughly delightful group appears out of nowhere with something new to say and a distinct, immediately identifiable way of saying it. Such is the case with the B-52's who pull off a nearly impossible trick and make it look easy. For starters, they are musically intoxicating and certainly can't be topped for dance party appeal. The vocal blend of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson is a lovely, natural fit, and Fred Schneider's droll, spoken word additions provide an effective and often hilarious counterpoint. Keith Strickland knows that a band like this needs basic, pure drumming, nothing flashy, and he delivers. The late, lamented Ricky Wilson provided great retro surf guitar, right on time and target. The frequent use of left-field sound effects sprinkles the songs with splendid surprises.

The song writing, especially lyrics, is always slightly cracked and completely charming. Catchy tunes devoted to poorly planned parties, ruins in Mesopotamia, and making love in strobe light are delivered without irony; no matter how absurd the subject it all seems to make sense when the B-52's do it. As good as these individual contributions are, it is the collective vibe and sensibility that sends this group over the top, their Own, Private I Don't Know is recognizable from 100 paces.

While several anthology CDs are currently available, this one shines most brightly. I was considering the 2-CD compilation, Nude On The Moon, but decided against it after learning about the alternate mixes, etc. Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation has the absolute requisite B-52's hits you can't live without, and plenty more besides. Nice to know that future generations will have quality neo-absurdist surf-guitar dance party music to enjoy - they'll need it.

summer of love.......2006-04-17

This is worth picking up for the remix "Summer of Love" alone. Much like another song based on the hot season - Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" - the track is fast-paced yet has a haunted, melancholy feel to it, as if something is lost forever. Quite a departure from the kitschy party songs the band is known for.

At its best, Prince's biggest seller of the '90s is an archetype of seemingly casual inspiration, thanks mainly to the ease tracks such as "Cream," "Money Don't Matter 2 Night," and "Willing and Able" exude. Of course, he's working as hard as ever, whether in a mellow groove or an aggressively funky one ("Gett Off"). Compared with the masterpiece Sign o' the Times, Diamonds and Pearls is a minor creation, but it's one for the long haul. --Rickey Wright

One of my favorite albums by Prince would definitely have to be Diamonds and Pearls. Every song is beautiful, especially Diamonds and Pearls. Prince is a musical genius. One of my favorite songs on the album is Insatiable. This album is a must have for anyone who calls themselves a Prince fan.

High-Water Mark of NPG Phase.......2007-04-07

The first half of the album is really tight.(I used to listen to "side A" repeatedly on road trips.) And it's a sexy album too, rivaling Madonna's "Erotica" as the best sex/dance album of the early 90s. (My vision of a perfect college party would be going into a dark basement and everyone is dancing to this album and making out.) The only weak spots here are where Prince lets his New Power Generation bandmates shine: "Push" and "Jughead" are especially forgettable. Still, if you like this dirty & danceable phase of Prince's career, this album is much better than the other New Power Generation-era albums, mostly because it's so concise you can listen to it in one sitting. And there are moments of real Marvin Gaye-esque pathos in "Insatiable" and "Money Don't Matter 2 Night".

Prince lite.......2006-04-05

In the early 90's, before the "alternative" music explosion, new jack swing and rap ruled the airwaves. And it's clear that, perhaps for the first time in his career, with "Diamonds and Pearls" Prince was catering at least somewhat to a mainstream audience. It's still a Prince album, to be sure, filled with the usual sexual bravado (on the slinky "Cream" and the throbbing, intoxicating "Gett Off") and mellow political criticism (on the somber "Money Don't Matter 2 Night", and the closer "Live 4 Love"). But the musical influences on the album never stray far from fairly conventional R&B. The album does take a slight detour with the jazzy "Strollin'", but it's a far cry from the sonic adventurousness of "Around the World in a Day", or even the preceeding "Graffiti Bridge". Just call it "Prince Lite".

Diamonds and Pearls - A New Prince.......2005-12-18

The Year was 1991, Prince had released 2 consecutive albums that weren't that good. The Batman soundtrack and Graffiti Bridge to his movie that flopped. This time around he had found a new band "The Power Generation" and had added a new more hip hop influented sound. Basically, the days of catchy pop-funk were gone and he had joined the hip hop revolution. Read on to find out the result.

Diamonds and Pearls is a new chapter of Prince music, although we already had seen hints of that on Graffiti Bridge in 1990, it fully came out here. A very hip hop influented album recorded with new band the Power Generation. It does have other infleunts aswell and some songs still sound like in the late 80's but it's difficult to not point of the sound of hip hop he's added here, almost like a re-born Prince. The album "Diamonds and Pearls" was a big hit, and not surprising with all the good songs it has. Although his top albums of the 80's where slighyly better this got enough good songs to be called "Near Masterpiece".

"Thunder" is a psychedelic-funk song where the hook "Thunder - all thru the night,Promise to see Jesus in the morning light,Take my hand, it'll be alright, C'mon save your soul tonight" is defenitely about religion. "Daddy Pop" got hip hop all over it. If You like songs like "Get Off" you'll this one too. The title track is magnificient. It's a sensual ballad and yet somehwat pompous and duet with Rosie Gaines. Not surprising it was a big hit. "Cream" is one of those trademarks songs about sex, this funky number was another hit single. "Strollin" is a slow and sensual retro-soulish song where Prince sings in falsetto. It got these jazzy infleunces too. "Willing and Able" got gospel choirs in the back and accoustic guitars. A very good song on it's own right.

"Gett Off", with it's hip hop influented sound and introduction of NPG doesn't need further presentation. A big hit and a funky hip hopish number with very explicit lyrics. "Walk Don't Talk" is funny, and it's extremly catchy and it adds sound fom cars. "JugHeads" is hip hop sounding with raps and cool sounds, but it's one of the weaker songs here, but Prince raps on here. "Money Don't Matter Tonight" is a wonderful romantic ballad, it takes up issues like gambling, finding partners for invetsment and killing kids in order to control oil supply. The message is clear though, it's far more important to have a soul then to have cash. "Push" is another hip hop sounding sound, and like the other simular one's it's catchy but lacks a good hook. "Insatiable" is a great erotic slow jam with horns. Lush and beautiful. "Live 4 Love" is another hip hop sounding song, starts with an original robotic countdown. This one also offers a psychedelic guitar solo and a rap. A beautiful closer to a near-masterpiece.

Conclusion, Diamonds and Pearls was a new chapter in Prince's music, he joined the hip hop revolution of the early 90's where basically all hip music had a flavour of hip hop. However, not all songs are hip hop sounding, many still sound like the old Prince of the mid 80's. As a result this album is very rich and is full of variety. Psychedelics, Hip Hop, Romantic Soul and Pop. Perhaps it sound a little unfocused but in the end it's a fantastic album where Prince shows all of his sides, also a big commerical hit. Must have.

One of my favorite Prince CDs........2006-09-16

I remember actually buying this CD many moons ago not even hearing any of the songs on it but man, it was a great purchase and completely blew away all of my expectations that I had for his 1992 'symbol' album. This is easily one of his greatest CDs of his career. "My Name Is Prince" proves this with a heavy driving rhythm, hard-edged lyrics and an extremely funky feel throughout. The album is very experimental and far removed from his more conventional sounding records but it ranks as one of my favorites of his.

It seems that Prince decided to be a storyteller with this release featuring Mayte throughout the CD. But with each story, it flows into one another with spoken "segues" in between the songs. Also features Kirstie Alley as the frustrated reporter, possibly echoing Prince's real-life evasion of reporters! Very enjoyable as it includes the hits 7, SEXY M.F., & DAMN U!

Before Prince found his...well, whatever he found..........2006-06-25

Ever since Prince "converted" there's been a slightly subdued "edge" to his music. The "love symbol album," as this one is commonly referred, shows the singer at his most enigmatic, hedonistic, self-centered, controversial, and, to a certain extent, spiritual, than anything he produced up to that time, and, perhaps, more than his releases in the last decade. When he announces "My name is Prince" in the first track, the listener should be prepared. There is truly no one else like the guy from Minneapolis.

With backing on vocals and instrumentation by The New Power Generation, Prince has never sounded better and clocking in at just under seventy minutes, there's a lot of good music to behold.

The album comes with a "parental advisory" for the album's explicit lyrics and that disclaimer is warranted. Even though many of the songs are populated by profanities, they don't detract from the songs. In fact, unlike others who need a "cuss word" or two to supply a shock, Prince's songs are enhanced by a zinger here or there. But, mind you, the subject matter is definitely for the adult and caution should be advised when playing around "little ears."

It's About The Songs,Stupid!.......2006-05-31

I always have been an admirer of Prince and his music and this is an CD,I must admit I always have trouble talking as a whole.It's a rock opera with a lot of obscure spiritual references.This is not part two of 'Lovesexy' though-the arrangements are far less jazzy and dissonant.Nonetheless Prince tries to do a lot on this album.Especially on "My Name Is Prince" this album is very sonic and noisy.For such a trendsetter Prince spends an awful lot of time following the hip-hop/new jack thing and in this day and age some parts of this album sound painfully dated.Some songs are pretty good such as "3 Chains O Gold" and the frenetic "The Max" but both showcase one problem-both songs turn into rap midway and don't really need to.For ballad purposes the better song is "The Morning Papers".There is a lot of variety besides the heavy hip hop experimentation such as two great rock tunes-"The Continental" and "7",the latter being one of his standards.As far as funk tunes one was a hit-the somewhat rap oriented "Sexy MF",which actually works very well and the more bare bones "The Sacrifice Of Victor",with it's nostolgic take on civil rights.If this album had been wittled down to an album containg nine or 10 of the best songs here,including most the ones mentioned above this would have been a classic Prince album.But due to artist's tendency in the early 90's to fill every available space on a CD this ended up being an obscure rock 'soap opera' that features too much information and music that distracts from some good seperate songs that are wonderful.In my opinion not exactly the highest point in Prince's career.

A Masterpiece.......2006-05-28

I signed up to this web site to pay this album its just due. Largely overlooked, this CD was one of Prince's crowning acheivements. If 1999 was a sign of what was to come with Purple Rain, then Diamonds and Pearls was Prince warming for the Symbol album. The album finds Prince sucessfully covering more musical ground in 75 minutes than most artists would attempt in their entire career. There's something here for everyone - Rock (The Continental), Dance (Melt With U), Reggae (Blue Light), Funk (The Maxx, Sexy MF, My Name is Prince) and everything in between (Damn U, Arrogance and Sacrafice of Vistor). Oh and if you need a hit, this the album where the single 7 is from. Each song has its own distinct personality and so well written that they stay in your head after just one listen. I must admit, this is not my favorite album (that title goes to his 1987 classic Sign O' The Times), but its one that shouldn't be overlooked. When people ask me which Prince album they should try first, I always recommend this one as it can not be categorized... most people should find much of this album appealing. He trades in the raunch of the 80's for style and sophistication. The album has it's sexy moments, but they are much more subtle. If you are a music fan, but not a Prince fan - this is an album you should check out!

If the title track didn't sum up an entire generation, it certainly captured the frazzled swagger of early punk rock. Launched from New York City's famous C.B.G.B. nightclub, the Voidoids released this debut in 1977, around the same time as Television's Marquee Moon. A rewrite of an old cornball Beat song, "Blank Generation" echoes the Sex Pistols's cries of "no future." "Love Comes in Spurts," the 1977 album's other classic, is a double-entendre both playful and menacing. I can't think of proper words to describe this album because of its magnitude. The sounds are so perfect I assume it speaks for itself. Minimalist at times, danceable at others -- this should be on your list of original punk "must haves."

Originally released in 1977,as this was Richard Hell's first lp.Reason I'm giving this CD reissue a 2 1/2 star rating is because I personally know old school fans of New York punk that may get more out of it that I did.Tunes here that kept this disc in my player ALL the way through were "Love Comes In Spurts","Betrayal Takes Two",their John Fogerty cover "Walking On The Water" and the title cut "Blank Generation",Obviously,this disc didn't do much for me.Just might appeal to select fans of Television,Ramones,Dictators or Lou Reed.

This album sends chills down my spine. It's perfect for all occasions, Hell's lyricism is like an acid trip and Quine and Julian are such good guitarists it hurts. Having Marky Ramone in your band ain't bad, either. Once, I met Ivan Julian and professed my love for him before he covered Blank Generation, and I tell ya, my life's never been the same.

Richard Hell really is a fabulous poet and even if his punkish off-beat singing annoys you, his lyrics alone are enough to make you listen. I personally love his unique execution; he has a style all to his own and even the music is well written. A must-have for anyone building up a real punk collection. Skip the Pistols and go straight to the original punk rockers! Pick up The Modern Lovers while you're at it!

Truly Creative Punk Rock.......2005-11-17

While the C.B.G.B's scene is often hyped for giving us artists like The great Ramones and Blondie, poor Richard Hell seemed to have been forgotten. Thankfully we can all discover him through this masterpeice Blank Generation. You've probably heard that the title track is the only noteworthy song but in my opinion that is far from the truth. While Blank Generation is a somewhat overlooked punk anthem, songs like Love Comes In Spurts and Liars Beware should deffinitley be held up as punk classics. Richard supplied a very unique sonding vocal track which is easily the best part of the album. The guitarist is entertaining too with his odd minimalistic solos that sound somewhat like an amuteur guitar player with a guitar that is slightly out of tune (which is probably what it is). Might I also note that the one and only Marky Ramone drums on this album but the drumming really isn't anything to noteworthy. All in all if you are looking for a punk album with a much different sound too it I would reccomend this album highly. Highlights: Love Comes In Spurts, Liars Beware, Down at the Rock and Roll Club, Blank Generation, and I'm Your Man.

An aggressive, infectious dance album that forces me to stand up and move while listening to it. It has aged wonderfully! Heck, it could've been released yesterday and be hailed as an instant classic. "Voodoo People" is probably the most memorable track, but "Their Law" and "Poison" are just as good in my opinion. This is a 10!

'It's like being in a fight'.......2006-02-26

I 've been a prodigy fan since day one and I can clearly remember the first time I listened to this album. To be honest, at first I wasn't too sure, after all my love of the prodigy was based on the old skool breakbeat of 'Experience' (another 5 star album) and I was only 15. But, as I listened to it more I began to realise just what a monumentous achievement it was. This album gets better with time, and for electronic music, that is very rare indeed. Jilted was nominated for the mercury music prize on its release in '94. Jilted is Liams piéce de resistance, he is yet to produce anything remotely as good as this album. Its dark, its edgy, its loud and its agressive and thats what the prodigy is about. The intro cheekily signaled Liams intention to stay underground and then bursts straight in to the fat chunky beats and breaking glass of Break and Enter, pure class. Everything is perfect, the production, the samples, the 'fists in the air' beats. Its a real anti establishment record. Stick it on, crank up the bass and try and hear all the layers of madness that Liam lovingly crafted onto this record. An audio catharsis, buy it.

The 'Reign In Blood' of dance music.......2006-02-12

A lot has changed between 'The Experience' and this album, their debut was poppy, easy-listening and somewhat normal techno. I see it as their most danceable act with cheap ideas who seemed to work out very well. It was easy to see they were skilled, but could we expect the next album would sound like THIS?! It's much tougher, heavier, it's more alternative and at the same time extremely ambitious! Everyone should have heard Voodoo people or No Good on a party once in their life. The first mentioned has a lot of guitarparts with some kind of subtile western atmosphere and was together with 'one love' used for the 'Hackers'OST. The second has a vocal sample of Kelly Charles. Also the alternative rockscene is very charmed by the darker classics such as 'their law' and 'poison'. Overall I think everyone with a passion for danceable music should enjoy this: Horrifying babycrying, formule 1 races,shredding guitars,flute solos, extra-terrestrial life, shattered glass and beauty it's all here!

"Music For The Jilted Generation" may have more interesting songs musically, but "The Fat Of The Land" is completely made up of great sounding songs. The problem with "Music" is that it starts off incredibly well and then starts to get uneven. What I mean by that is that the first songs are so good and instantly catchy that they basically overshadow the rest of the album - the rest is good, don't get me wrong, but it will probably take you a while to like the rest (they'll grow on you). As opposed to "The Fat Of The Land", "Music" is more interesting than it is fun. The songs are fun, yes, but they aren't trying as hard to be as memorable or as catchy as anything on "The Fat Of The Land" - you're going to be more interested in the intricacies of the songs I bet. This approach may not be for everyone (I bought the album expecting more songs like "Firestarter" and "Breathe", for instance), but rave fans and those who truly appreciate music will love it. Also, "Their Law", "Break & Enter", "Voodoo People", "Speedway" and "Poison" are all very fun and interesting rave songs that alone satisfy the purchase of this CD, but I'm sure you'll come to like the rest in time. I'd highly recommend this for rave and techno fans, but I'm not sure whether other genre fans will like it.

After Emancipation's three discs and Crystal Ball's four-pack, here's good news for folks with day jobs: Newpower Soul is one CD. The bad news? It may be less than two hours long, but it isn't any less indulgent or erratic. The fault lies in the Artist's seeming unwillingness to keep abreast of musical trends. It's odd that a musician who, at his height, redefined black music by going against the grain is now content to dredge up the most innocuous prefab funk and expect his fans to take it as innovation. Where once we partied like it was 1999, now the former Prince just wants us to "Push It Up!" to a woeful reprise of Emancipation's bland "Jam of the Year." This is funk as good-time boogie music, which of course it can be, but once he infused the bass line with a sly apocalyptic vision that meant more than just "get down." Unfortunately, on Newpower Soul there's little to be heard of the Artist's raging guitar lines--a sign, perhaps, that the prolific star has a rock record in the works? Best are midtempo tracks like "Come On," which motivates on a slinky slurred synth pattern and has that winking sexuality we associate with the Artist. Not bad but not great either, Newpower Soul is a minor speed bump on the long road that is the Artist's spectacular career. --Amy Linden

This is my first review on a Prince album. I can not beleive there are reviews that negative about this gem! I mean sure we all have different tastes and we are not alike, thankfully. Anyone who says this album is not any good, has really not even listened to it at all, AT ALL, seriously, this has got to be the most creative, sexual, one of them all, and not to mention all the different styles and effects on this one! "The One" is truly beautiful typical Prince song and all the great stories like on "Shoo-Bed-Ooh", and the hardcore dance grooves like "Freaks on this side" and "New Power Soul" and "Mad Sex" and "Push it up"!!!! Come on now people, please do not keep others from this one, cause this is it! Prince shines on this album, he is at almost his finest!
You all will love this album, trust me, get it, sit back and INJOY! I know I do, even after all these years, and do not let the fact of that there were no songs that were commercial on the cd stop, songs do not need to be commercial to be good!!!

Painful, but has its moments.......2005-06-23

Like Queens `Hot Space`, or Dave Matthews `Everyday` this album can be seen two or three ways: Sheer Rubbish, a change in direction, or just an album that takes some getting used to. Six months later, I can say that I am still undecided. It has its few good moments, like The One or Wasted Kisses. Otherwise all the songs blend into one long generic R&B/Rap album. The good news is that he released a much better album the following year. But you should take a listen for yourself.

Weak, uninspired album with one decent, hidden track.......2005-04-14

I love Prince, but this is his weakest album to date. Prince actually played some AMAZING shows with Chaka Khan and Larry Graham in support of this album, and he also had complete artistic control making it; knowing this makes NEW POWER SOUL all the more disappointing. It sounds musically uninspired - a lot of Prince's trademark moves are here, the multi-track vocals, the nice licks, risque lyrics, etc. and the production is pretty smooth, but the final result sounds languid. In fact, compared to 1996's EMANCIPATION or 2001's RAINBOW CHILDREN (two better examples of his post-Warner Bros. work), NEW POWER SOUL sounds pretty boring.

"New Power Soul", "Mad Sex", and "Push It Up" have their moments, but they fizzle out quickly. The single "Come On" is the best upbeat tune/jam on this album, but after that first chorus, the funk doesn't hold up. There's some rudimentary bottleneck guitar to shake things up, but it comes off pretty weak. The other single, "The One," did better on the charts, but not enough to be called a 'hit,' not even a modest one; compared to "Adore" or MUSICOLOGY's "Call My Name," "The One" sounds really weak.

The one track worth your time is "Wasted Kisses." It's a hidden track - you have to skip past a whole bunch of blank tracks to track #49 to hear it - and it's a fine ballad. Easily the best thing here by a wide margin, if iTunes's online store ever sells it, I'd get it instead of buying the whole CD.

Luckily, a LOT of people seem to be selling this disc used for $1, so if you find a cheap copy, consider getting it for "Wasted Kisses," but don't pay much more for it.

Give New Power Soul some Love Y'all!.......2004-07-18

This album is very interesting because some of the songs are really good and others are either ok or not good. The songs that are good are "New Power Soul", "Freaks on this Side", "Come On", "When you love Somebody", and "I like Funky Music." These are just good funk/soul tunes that any fan of Soul and Funk would like. One more song that is good but kind of questionable is the song "Mad Sex". It's questionable because of the title. I mean the title is somewhat of a "Controversy". But, it is a good tune just heads up on the song from a lyric perspective. So Give it a listen, but if you say "I like it but the words are a little bad" Don't worry thats ok. There are still five other good songs. So this album over and out is an eight out of ten on scale of one out of ten. But perhaps the most interesting part of the album is the fact that Chaka Khan sings background vocals for the album. She does a good job. So, if you like Chaka Khan and her music, you should definantly give this album a good listen. Trust me, you'll be surprised.

SOJA has been playing in the background of my life for two years now. sad to say, after listening to peace in a time of war non-stop for so long, its hard for me to turn to anything else reggae... YES even marley. this is no knock on the roots greats believe me. SOJA is just THAT GOOD. jacobs voice is haunting and beautiful, backed up by great rythm and lines from the band this cd will stay in your player or ipod on repeat. my brother who isnt more than a passive reggae fan (marley, the occasional toots or tosh) after hearing me play the Soldiers now is hooked as well. these guys will be known as one of the american reggae greats.. (along and above groundation believe me) CANT MISS SONGS!! what can i say? if you love roots like i do and you dont have this cd you are sleepin mon! i live in northern virginia so i had heard buzz bout these brothers for awile, but it wasnt till i saw dem at the state theatre in falls church dat i realize how good SOJA are..PEACE IN A TIME OF WAR is an awesome cd mon..its in heavy rotation in my player! 2nd only to bob marleys 4 cd set SONGS OF FREEDOM.. you wont be disappointed if you purchase this one! my favorite tracks,if i had to pick,are RASTA COURAGE AND PEACE IN A TIME OF WAR..LIVITY!!
