Taking inspiration from little known British band Curve, the formula behind Garbage was simple enough: Industrial strength beats, grungy guitars and ice queen vocals. the remastered sound and collection of essential songs from the first 2 garbage albums alone make this worthwhile. however, it is skimpy on 'beautifulgarbage' material ("androgyny" anyone?), and drops at least one if not 2 worthy inclusions from 'bleed like me.' the garbage mixes disc would be killer had they not edited almost every mix from its original length. the version of "#1 crush" on disc 1 is from 'romeo + juliet,' which is the nellee hooper remix. the original (from 'subhuman ["vow"]') is still a stray b-side. one day there will almost inevitably be remastered versions of the garbage albums, hopefully with a pertinent bonus disc with the full versions of the remixes from each album as well as matching b-sides, if not a garbage b-side collection unto itself. until then, this is the most up to date mastering of the songs included, shame the songs on disc 2 are edited, it could have been "absolute."

Absolutely the best........2007-07-29

Open the book and you will discover the wonders of Garbage; and then so ends the chapter when Garbage puts away their tools for electronica sounds and beats, and puts up the best they had since the beginning of 1995. We were blessed 11 years ago with sounds of sarcasm mixed in a bowl of angst and the voice topped the cake with melechonic soundscapes. You start off with the very first single off of their self-titled debut - "Vow", and end with the latest tear-jerker with a twist "It's All Over But The Crying". Not to mention the newest edition to Garbage's tracklist - the Chrissie Hynde inspired "Tell Me Where It Hurts". The songs sound remastered - Shirley's voice is clear as a whistle and the music sounds sharper than ever. Not to mention you also get the remix's most people haven't heard of.

All in all - if you are looking for the best of the best from Garbage, this CD is for you. It will make you reminisce the golden times when you were an angsty teen looking for a band or song that you related to. You can remember those times when you felt alone and the only thing you felt and heard at the time was the golden sound of Shirley crooning to you - as the boys (Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker) play the super-sonic sounds to mesh the vocals together.

For the everyday Garbage collecter: This album is for you. For the people who haven't heard of them: This is also the CD for you. Even to those who liked a few songs, this is also the CD to add to your collection. The money spent on this as well as the single and DVD is WELL worth the money. You will not regret the purchase. Garbage may have closed the chapter with this album - but do come back for Chapter 2 when Garbage comes back in 2008; it is ALWAYS worth the wait. As the book closes it's chapter, a new page emerges, and we will be blessed with more music from a band who paved the way for so many. A band who took their time making music for US. For the people who really needed that extra push - Garbage has helped the Alternative movement become glamorous, and we thank them each day for giving us the music that we so desperately love.

Just had to knock a few nanopoints off for not including other singles and hit tracks such as Androgyny, Run Baby Run, Sex Is Not The Enemy, and ESPECIALLY Breaking Up The Girl. But just a few nanopoints. Fact is, this is one of those "Not A Bad Track On It" CDs, and the quality of the tracks, the fine packaging and great liner notes, and the brilliant "Garbage Mixes" bonus disc are what makes this CD worth OWNING, rather than borrowing, ripping or stealing. Thanks, Garbage! I'll miss you, and hold out hope that we see you again for "Still More Garbage"! EDIT: I've been listening to the Mix CD all day today.... FANTASTIC!! Don't be cheap, drop the extra $2 for this "Special Edition" version, you will not regret it. More than worth it JUST for "Milk" remixed by Massive Attack. So hot.

Misses the Mark.......2007-07-26

I was really looking forward to this CD. I loved the first two Garbage CDs, but wasn't so keen on the last two so I was excited about hearing the mixes on this CD especially because the mixes were of some of my favorite songs. Unfortunately, I have heard better Garbage mixes elsewhere. As much as I hate to say it, this CD is a bit of a let down.

Almost nails it.......2007-07-24

Encompassing elements of electronica and hard-rock over dance-beats, with lush melodies and killer hooks, Garbage has proved to be one of the best bands to come down the pike in the last ten years. Garbage's new compilation "Absolute Garbage" (2007) includes some of the bands best work, along with a terrific new song "Tell Me Where it Hurts."

Nearly eighty minutes (the length allowed for a CD) "Absolute Garbage" is very generous, offering some of the band's best work. But even with eighteen tracks, this best-of misses the mark a bit.

The track list is fairly predictable. As the band's first two albums far out-sold the next two, this compilation is skewed in the direction of "Garbage" (1995) and "Version 2.0" (1998) and a little skimpy on selections from the underrated and appreciated "beautifulgarbage" (2001) and "Bleed Like Me" (2005). Therefore, some of the band's later-day singles like "Breaking up the Girl," "Androgyny" and "Sex is not the Enemy" are left by the way-side.

If you are a casual Garbage fan, this compilation is ideal, as it includes all the well-known hits from the band's commercial peak, so as a "greatest hits" the CD works. However, in terms of covering the band's entire career, this compilation leaves a little something to be desired. While "beautifulgarbage" and "Bleed Like Me" didn't have the sales of the first two, they were easily as good, and more of their singles should have been included here. Perhaps a two-CD anthology, with all the hits as well as essential album cuts would have been preferable.

Still, if you aren't really a Garbage fanatic and just want the hits, this CD should be what you're looking for. That said; if you like what you hear and have the money, all four Garbage albums are definitely worth owning. While Garbage might be a `singles band," each of their four studio albums stands-up on its own right, each with its own flavor, and the non-singles on those albums are excellent.

The new song, the melancholy "Tell Me Where it Hurts" sounds "grand," and wouldn't have sounded at all out of place on the Phil Specter-esque, "beautifulgarbage." It's disappointing, however, that the other new Garbage song "Betcha" is not included on this CD and you have to buy the "Tell Me Where it Hurts" single to get it. Hopefully someday Garbage will release a compilation album of all their b-sides and it will be available there.

Two other hits, "#1 Crush" from the "Romeo and Juliet" soundtrack (1996) and "The World is not enough" from the James Bond film of the same name (1999) are thrown in for good measure.

The bonus CD of dance remixes is cool if you are into that sort of thing, and for just a few dollars more than the non-special edition; this double CD is a good value.

One Band's Garbage is another band's Treasure.......2007-07-25

...or Shirley Manson rules, and we missed it. When "Garbage" first debuted in 1995, this crew of rock pros fronted by the fiery Manson hit like a ton of bricks. Melding the snarl of The Pretenders with icy new wave, "Vow" laid it all on the table. "I can't use what I can't abuse," Shirley sang over chunky guitars and industrial beats. Superproducer Bruce Vig and the other two members has spent enough time in the alt-rock backstreets that they new how to make that sound mean something. With the outsider anthem "Queer" and sneering put-down "Stupid Girl," Garbage had the ingredients all in place.

The following "Version 2.0" was almost as good. But the fact that Garbage was so blatant about their homage sometimes dulled the coolness of songs like "Push It" (swiped directly from Salt'n'Pepa) and "Special," which has Manson singing the hook from "Brass In Pocket" over the fade. The singles were great, but the seams were showing.

Perhaps it was that sameness that inspired the band to stretch out on "Beautiful Garbage's" moody and atmospheric material. "Androgyny" (not included here) flirted with R'n'B, but "Cherry Lips/Go Baby Go" was exactly the kind of amalgam of styles that made the best Garbage great. On the other hand, the lack of immediacy made it a commercial drop-off from the first two albums. The band went on hiatus.

When 2005 rolled around, "Bleed Like Me" sounded like a return to form, even if that sound was no longer all too relevant. Still, the slamming "Why Do You Love Me" found Manson deliciously waffling back and forth between anger at the cheating boyfriend and the angst of the chorus "Why don't you love me? It's making me crazy!" Putting a pretty pout to the title track, Shirley Manson taunts us with "you should see my scars." Indeed, we get a band that sounded both battle weary and resilient.

This best of caps with a new song, "Tell Me Where it Hurts," which sounds hot. There is also a remix of "Bleed Like Me's" "It's All Over But The Crying," plus the soundtrack singles "#1 Crush" (Romeo & Juliet) and the James Bond "The World Is Not Enough." The disc does flesh out its running time, so I really can't gripe about songs I'd rather hear. But I will: "Bad Boyfriend" "Androgyny" and "Silence Is Golden." Other side, if you never picked up any Garbage albums, "Absolute Garbage" will fill in the hits for you.

For once, we have truth in advertising. For that alone, if I didn't impose a rigid 1- or 5-star rating system on culture, since life is black or white and never gray, I would have given this album a 2. It truly is garbage, not food-scrap rubbish -- we would have to be reviewing something more patently offensive like Wolfmother, Fergie or Smashing Pumpkins 2.0 to reach that rancid level -- but the old stuff you throw out because it's inferior to the new stuff you can finally afford to replace it. This truly is a dime-store supergroup whipped up by corporate executives high on superglue. I hear Shirley Manson performed a pretty good trick involving golf balls before thrift-store king Herb Alpert tossed a bag of money at her hairy feet. If you're into phone-sex crooning over a neverending sonic slab of bubble-gum yummy feedback fuzz, this crud's for you.

They were garbage till Shirley came along.......2007-03-20

Garbage are a strange concoction three veteran producers one of whom produced the most significant album of the 1990s, teaming up with a then unknown scottish singer, it was strange yet it gelled and just listening to this album you can see why.

Garbages first and best album has some of the greatest and perhaps best known songs from the decade. Alot of the songs on here appeard in commercials and TV Shows, most people would probably have heard at least one song of here.

Garbage would never got anywhere with Shirley Manson whose sexy rather sinister vocals really bring out the darker edge of the music.

The song on here that really holds your attention is Stroke of Luck which really sad and rather gloomy but its a real beautiful song one of those tracks you alway want to listen to again.

I think this album is easily one of the Essentials of the 1990s, and one of the best debuts ever it's a powerfull and enthrilling listen and makes you not long after hearing it the first time want to listen all over again.

ironic name for the band.......2007-03-19

This is devil's music. It sucks you in with it's casual guitar riffs that carry more expression than skill. Soon you'll be singing along with shirley's sexy voice, echoing things like "as far from god as heaven is wide". Next you'll start wearing excessive eye make up and slicing your wrists, then you'll be on prozac. You see phizer makes music like this to get people depressed and asking for prozac, they make a lot of money doing this. Haha just kidding, i think, no really her voice is hot as hell and the music is super creative, interesting riffs, cool chord changes, etc. Be careful you might get hooked!

It's not that Garbage is doing anything particularly new. At times, singer Shirley Manson borrows Chrissie Hynde's phrasing, Patti Smith's rock beat poetry, and Brian Wilson's chorus from "Don't Worry Baby." But producer Butch Vig provides a modern sheen to Version 2.0 that makes it sound fresh and distinctly modern. Purists may blanch--the album is a hybrid of rock guitars, dance rhythms, and pop choruses--but songs such as "I Think I'm Paranoid" (a rip of Elastica) and "The Trick Is to Keep Breathing" (Depeche Mode, without the chill) sound great no matter what they're called. --Keith Moerer

Thundering and sultry.......2007-06-12

Version 2.0 is a very dynamic CD... yes, there are lots of other influences on it, but nothing very original has come out in the electronica genre in many years... everything out there builds on something else. We all have our own tastes and faves, and mine are "Hammering in my Head", "Push It", "The Trick is to Keep Breathing" and "You Look So Fine". "Hammering" and "Push It" have to be listened to very LOUD, preferably on a serious system. The bass on those tracks is seriously fat... and it sounds great. Shirley Manson makes this CD though - in every way.

Rip it all to shreds and let it go.......2007-05-08

If there were a such thing as 90s new wave, this would be it. Here's some awesome techno-influenced rock...this came out almost ten years ago but the songs still sound pretty cool. I don't care if this was directed towards the 14-year-old girl demographic or whatever...I've always really dug this CD, and the one before it. I wish more pop music sounded like this album! It's been said by some that this is Garbage's best, but for me it's a toss up between this one and the debut (I personally think the debut had better lyrics)... in any case the band's music definately went downhill after this point. Not the most original thing in the universe I guess, but for sure still a good listen.

The Pretenders + Romeo Void + Beach Boys + Salt'n'Pepa = Garbage V2.0.......2007-04-13

Naming their sophomore album like it was the latest product from Microsoft made me initially distrust Garbage's second album, but time has really given this a fair shake. More guitar heavy than the debut "Garbage" but cut from a lot of the same cloth, Shirley Manson pouts, preens, breathes heavily and makes like a world class rock lady on the whole album.

My initial frustrations with the album are still there, however. "Version 2.0" There is way too much here that is outright swiped from other artists, and with nary a wink to hide it. Romeo Void pops up in "Sleep Together," The Pretenders are quoted in "Special" (down to Manson singing "Talk of the Town" during the song's fade and Chrissie Hynde getting a thank you in the liner notes), while "Push It" at least gives Brian Wilson and Herbie Azor (the writer behind Salt'n'Pepa) songwriter credits.

That shouldn't stop you from enjoying "Version 2.0." Garbage takes the 'influences' -- and I use that term broadly -- to make memorable music. Butch Vig played some great guitar on this cd, like on "Hammering in My Head." Veering from the giddy new-wave of "Special" to the emotionally delivered ballad "The Trick is to Keep Breathing," this was a band that was in their moment. Nine years later, "Version 2.0" remains a listenable artifact from 1998.

This is one record I don't know if I'll ever forget. I've loved it ever since the first time I listened to it. While some jealous Curve fans may dismiss the album (hey, listen to THEIR 2001 album "Gift" back-to-back with this and tell me who's ripping off who), this album is a bit less in use of the backwards guitar effects and wall-of-sound distortion of the debut. It is an electronic rock album, and one of the absolute finest that I've ever heard.

The record can be sexy at times, and it can also be heartbreaking and such at the same time. All 12 songs are amazing. The record begins with the new-wave inspired "Temptation Waits," a Blondie-esque track with lots of hooks and dancier than anything on the debut. "Hammering in My Head" and "Push It" are still as breathtaking as the first time I heard them. "Hammering" shows their artistic experimentalism at its best, and I hear something new in it each time. "Push It" is the main single from the album and quite possibly the greatest. They cleverly borrow from the Beach Boys for a hook and then have a hard-hitting chorus. I hear the album was made with about 120 tracks, and these two tracks certainly make it seem that way. For me, this album is a musical dream. "The Trick Is to Keep Breathing" and "You Look So Fine" show a more tender side of Garbage and are true gems. The former is a bit darker of the two, with the bass lines standing out and then the other one is a well-orchestrated track with some awesome Shirley Manson melodies. There's some quirkier tunes in "Wicked Ways" and "Sleep Together," and then the more straightforward tracks like "Dumb," which wouldn't sound too out of place on the first record.

Experimentation with great songwriting and hooks all over, it's just hard to ignore this record. The debut is good too, but I felt this album was even better, a progression from that one. I never get tired of listening to any of these songs. One of my top five albums of all-time.

Yes, Garbage's sound can be so close to a lot of people's heart. Just a ten years career and 4 lovely albums and they broke up. It's a shame, actually. This last album contain some track that really can make you shiver like "It's all over but the crying" and "Happy home"...Ballads that don't talk about easy feelings, there's always a dramatic vein in Garbage songs. Always, it doesn't mater if the song is a romantic ballad or a stunning hard rock song. Maybe is the sadness of life that pass through their music, sometimes it hurts, but can make You feel not alone.

I love this album! I see in the discussions someone said you would only like this if you are "bitter and angry"...well, that's not me...and I LOVE THIS ALBUM. Shirley Manson is amazing. Not only is she gorgeous, she is a fabulous singer, and a great, intelligent writer. Although I don't agree with all the philosophies she puts into her songs(though yes, I'm anti-war and think she articulated in "Boys Wanna Fight" what's going on really well, I don't think a "free love" revolution will solve anything on personal or political levels..."Sex is not the Enemy" is a great song music-wise though...end tangent), I think she's a great example for women in many ways. We're not all waiting for a man to come along and "make it all better." We're not all demure. Shirley's lyrics express that in a society that does not accept it. Go Shirley.

I have heard people complain that this album is more straight-up rock n'roll and less "electronic" than 2.0, but that is the hallmark of a great band. The Beatles had "Sgt. Pepper" as well as "Let it Be". Led Zeppelin did "Black Dog" as well as "Tangerine." Great bands have range.

Garbage is the only band I love that came out of the 90's. And they're still rockin' in the 2000's. Listening to this album has helped me alot through some recent times. There are some very uplifting songs, as well as some songs that are so deep, true, and sad that they make me cry. Beautifully written.

I saw Garbage in concert in Spring '05. Shirley Manson is even more jaw-droppingly captivating in person. Rock on, Garbage! And thank you for all the great music.

Garbage Bleeds.......2006-07-24

Shirley Manson and her rock band return with a good rocker album. Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl even makes a guest performance for the track "Bad Boyfriend". BLEED LIKE ME is a typical rock album. The guitars, bass, and drums are heavy and very rhythmic oriented with a lot of power chords. The guitars and bass also perform interesting counterpoint, but their distortion loose the melodic feel to their performance. Manson once again, gives a great performance in a rock style, but she also has some interesting melody lines as well. The contour to this record is well formed. Not all of the songs are a loud and heavy rock sound, some are quiet and have great harmonic progressions to them. The addition of keyboards and strings help in this aspect of the album. BLEED LIKE ME is interesting, and should be heard in its entirity.

Garbage's third album is an almost total departure for modern rock's renowned poster children. Shirley Manson, Butch Vig, Duke Erickson, and Steve Marker robustly straddled the line between alternative rock and techno in their two efforts, whipping up two finely crafted CDs that captured the cultural mood of the late '90s. After six years in the saddle, they've shaken off the charge that they're a producer's creation and have emerged as a full-blown band. The band has also given up all pretext at being au courant and topical, instead combining '80s kitsch with '70s pop, with a stop along the way to worship at the altars of Phil Spector and Chrissie Hynde and even at times arriving at their own version of nu soul. "Shut Your Mouth" is raw and menacing and does as much for female empowerment as a Missy Elliott hit. "Can't Cry These Tears Anymore" is a modern take on Leslie Gore's "It's My Party (And I'll Cry If I Want To), but with all the strangeness of Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. If there is a single theme to Beautiful Garbage (named after a line in a Courtney Love song), it's that smart girls don't put all their faith in love. The heroine in most of these 13 songs would rather kick a faithless lover in the, er, shins with her stilettos than pine by the phone. I wondered if I had bought the right album when listening to the first few tracks. It was like they had lost their "edge" and I was listening to Garbage-lite. The remainder of the album was better, but still not a match for their first two.

I think I'm werid or something because a lot of people hate this album and its my favorite of all of them. It almost caused the band to break up because it flopped. I don't think it should have. Yes its not as grungy as the first two albums, but its unique. The band experimented with this album and its not your typical rock album, which is why it flopped. In fact it might be too differnet from other rock albums. It has strong lyrics and Shirley's voice is amazing on this album though.
The best songs ar Shut your mouth, Cherry Lips, Untouchable, Cup of Coffee, and Silence is Golden. Shut Your Mouth is the lead song and is really edgy and catchy. Cherry Lips is bouncy and a little dirty and fun. Untouchable has a real nice beat and I love the lyrics in this song. Cup of Coffee is the ballad of this album and the best ballad ever made by Garbage. Yes it does have werid alien like sounds in it, but it actually really goes with the song. Silence is Golden is amazing. Fantastic beat, great lyrics, and the guitar in this is really cool.
Now for the other songs. Androgyny is a good song, but if listened to repeatedly will start grating on your nerves. Can't Cry these tears is a 70's 80'sish song that is alright. Its not bad but not as memorable as other songs on this album. Till the Day I die is actually a real fun song, the lyrics are good too. Breaking up the girl is like Androgyny to me its good if you don't listen to it repeatedly its good, its not as bad as Androgyny to me though. Drive you Home is a slow song and I love the melody though not as much as Cup of Coffee. The lyrics are bitter sweet and Shirley sings it so well. Parade is real good too but theres not much to say about this song, its unique. Nobody Loves You while techniquely one of my favorites I'm sure not many people will like this song. The begining and the end are the best parts of this song. So Like a Rose is the only song I will admit to not liking, its boring to me.
With that said this album isn't for everyone. but if like unique sounds and songs this is for you. Your either going to really love or really hate this album. I enjoyed this album a lot if that means anything to you.

Not always appreciated, but this sure is amazing..........2006-10-25

Garbage was one of the greatest alternative bands of the 90's, and is one of my top ten favorite bands of all-time. The blend of electronic, pop, and rock has always really connected with me. While the first two albums had more standout singles and I still prefer "Version 2.0" to this (there's not much I don't), it is an excellent release.

I've recently found myself listening to this one more lately. I don't know how people could possibly dismiss an album with the song "Cup of Coffee" on it. It's beautiful, heartbreaking, etc, and arguably the greatest song they have ever made. I also like the use of more orchestrated pop songs on the album, just like in that song. It has an interesting variety and never lacks in melody. It takes time to fully appreciate and I think it's totally worth it. My next favorite after that song is "Nobody Loves You", which nicely mixes acoustic guitar with trippy electronics. I like the synths and hip-hop beat of "Androgyny", and that theme goes on through a song like "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)", an unbashedly 80's tune. To me, this album is as truly Garbage as the first two albums. The album has a lot of really great lyrics, one of the things that makes the album so strong.
Also, if you're longing for the harder alternative tunes, this album does deliver some of those, like in the spoken-word "Shut Your Mouth" and the bass-heavy "Silence is Golden." I can't believe how good this sounds. To me, giving a raw, unproduced sound wouldn't have worked as well for a band like Garbage.

It unfortunately is the one that gets most flack, but boy are people missing out. It might not be for everybody, however I think you should be more open-minded when checking out a release like this. Just because they aren't trying to re-live their glory days doesn't make it ungood.

Don't dismiss it too quickly........2006-10-19

I don't get people who love the first and second Garbage albums and want to completely trash this one. If there's a place on this CD where the Shirley from albums #1 and #2 shine through, it's Cup of Coffee, Drive You Home, Silence is Golden, and Nobody Loves You. Cherry Lips and Can't Cry These Tears deserve nods for being glossy pop tunes with comparably dissonant lyrics. There are a lot of forgetable songs (particularly the singles 'Androgyny' and 'Breaking up the Girl'), and the ending ballad, while good, isn't quite 'Milk' or 'You Look So Fine', but these are not acceptable reasons to miss at least 6 songs that definitely are worth hearing for anyone who has otherwise enjoyed Garbage. 3.5 - 3.75 stars.

Dear Garbage,

Please turn the synth machine off. I don't know whats been going on these past few years but I haven't liked it. I thought album was awful. I listened to it twice and the only thing that caught my attention was Cherry Lips (which i can't get out of my head) and had I heard that song on the radio Garbage would be the last band i would have though behind it. Clearly the band has "evolved" from the moody sounds of their first album, but guess what? That album was good, this one sounds like some assortment of pop [...] that was pulled off free Internet radio stations.

Maybe the album is good, and if thats the case then old fans beware, this music isn't for us anymore.

Uneven but Still and All Great.......2007-07-04

I like Mame and Hello Dolly some, but frankly they always annoyed me by straining too much for lively and enthusiastic. This one is much more in keeping with my taste. It is mostly a gentler and more subdued show, with a lot of very good music. The title song and One Person are too much in Herman's rousing and stirring mode, and very much out of place with the rest of the score. That rest of the score is a wow, though.

The sardonic opening Spring of Next Year has a gorgeous melody but the lyrics are a sly parody and indictment of the big business ethic, a very French attitude. The contrast between melody and lyrics is exquisite. The Tea Party builds and builds until it ends in a hilarious babble of triple counterpoint harmony. The ballads Kiss Her Now, I've Never Said I Love You, and I Was Beautiful are gorgeous and express genuine emotion. Each Tomorrow Morning finds Herman in a gentler inspirational mode that works much better in this context than the two more standard Herman blasts. Even the song called Garbage is anything but. The performances are uniformly superb.

By the accounts I've read, Dear World flopped because an oversized production warred with the basically intimate nature of the show. Not too long ago, I had the pleasure of seeing a rare staging by a regional theter in Washington. It was a deliberately small production and to paraphrase the show, it was beautiful. In any case, of all Herman's scores, I think I like this one best, though Mack and Mabel is close. And Milk and Honey and La Cage have a lot to recommend them as well. Buy this one - you won't regret it.

There is much that is lovely, even gorgeous, in Herman's score, but for every "I Don't Want to Know" or "I've Never Said I Love You" or even "Garbage" (a deliciously garish tango), there's a "One Person" or the title number that sound like they belong in another show (probably Hello Dolly or Mame).

As the liner notes to the CD and others here have said, Dear World was an uneasy amalgam of a gentle fantasy requiring a light touch and a raucous Broadway "big lady" show. I'd say 80% of the score works: in addition to the above-mentioned songs, there's the soaring opening "The Spring of Next Year", Lansbury's dramatic "Kiss Her Now", her blithe "And I Was Beautiful" and the gorgeous cacophony of "The Tea Party."

Interestingly, if you get the perusal score for the show, there's a new song (a solo for Countess Aurelia) entitled "At the Bottom of the Glass" which sounds more in keeping with the tone than "Each Tomorrow Morning."

However, all quibbles aside, Dear World does bear repeated listening. For those who think Herman is merely frivolous anonymous showtunes, this show disputes that.

Herman's best!.......2006-09-20

I don't typically belong to the Jerry Herman fan base, but this score of his is awesome. I am familiar with Hello, Dolly, Mame, Mack And Mabel and La Cage Aux Folles, but this is the only Herman score I find enjoyable throughout. Having the glorious Angela Lansbury singing the bittersweet songs is also wonderful. As this show is one of the celebrated, legendary flops of Broadway history, I assume the book of the show has to take the blame. The score is first rate. Take this from a dedicated Sondheimite;)

I bought this because of the positive user reviews and couldn't be more thankful that I did. I'm not an expert on the musical form so I can't really speak to the strengths and weaknesses of the book nor the coherence of musical styles of the songs, but I can say with conviction that Angela Lansbury is unbelievably good on this recording. It's difficult for me to convey just how good she is, but I urge anyone whose curiosity is peaked by these reviews to break down and buy the CD. Lansbury's performance alone is worth the price of admission. Her voice is warm, comic, heartbreaking and uplifting. Just beautiful.

This still is my favorite play, i was young but i do remember how delightfully charming and funny this tale was. The scenic design still lingers, but this score will forever be etched in my mind. Dear World, And I was Beautiful, Kiss Her Now, Each Tomorrow Morning to name just a few classics by Jerry Herman a pro and way ahead of the time...when theatre was still theatre.

Love for the Trash.......2005-08-29

Well if you're a super Garbage fan of you just enjoy the spunky-er tunes that come from this band, than this is simply a must. The first song "Why Do You Love Me" comes from the album "Bleed Like Me" which I could not live without. The rest of the four song of the single are all non-released. "Space Can Come Through Anyone" is an awesome song, it's just so weird. "Nobody Can Win" is a slower song I think it sounds kind of like "Drive You Home" from "Beautiful Garbage". The last song, "I Just Wanna Have Something To Do" is Garbage's version of The Ramones, I like both versions. Plus the "Why Do You Love Me" vedio is on the single, and awesome!

The title song is very good, not perhaps Garbage's best, but probably worth buying if you don't plan on getting the album. 'Space Can Come Through Anyone' is average, it doesn't particularly grab me, but it's not terrible. 'Nobody Can Win' is probably my favorite track, but it isn't really in keeping with Garbage's normal style, and the acoustic guitar isn't anything to write home about. 'I Just Wannna Have something To Do' is pretty terrible, it drags my rating down at least one star, and is completely faceless and dull. The video feature is interesting, but if, like me, you rip your music it is a bit of an annoyance.

They're Baaaaaaack.......2005-05-18

And it was worth the wait. Garbage is one of my favorite bands, so needless to say I was looking forward to the new album. Deffinatly on of their best since version 2.0. their are hints of some old school garbage in this album. Worth spending the money on in my opinion!

Space Can Come Through Anyone.......2005-05-16

Though Why Do You Love Me is a good song on its own, there's another reason why this single is worth the purchase: the b-side Space Can Come Through Anyone. This song is good and should've been put on the album instead of the biggest weakness of Bleed Like Me: Sex Is Not The Enemy. Space is far more fun and innovative than the bland, uncreative Sex and has a slight Version 2.0 feel to it.

The completely acoustic Nobody Can Win is just okay, and shows that Garbage definitely needs more than just a guitar and the vague presence of a glockenspiel in the background to craft a good song. Also, a rock album like Bleed Like Me doesn't need an acoustic song, especially this one, since it would take away the raw feeling of the album.

The cover I Just Wanna Have Something To Do didn't do much for me either, like nearly every cover Garbage has done. Since it got released on a compilation a few years ago, I think Garbage could've done far better by putting a new b-side on here.

ok, you've all most likely heard Why Do You Love Me. PErsonally, I don't think it's fantastic, just ok.

BUT let's get down to the b-sides. "Space Can Come Through Anyone" is a great uptempo song and "Nobody Can Win" is a beautiful acoustic ballad, both of these could have been on the album replacing the less stellar "Why Don't You Come Over" and "Boys Wanna Fight". "I Just Wanna Have Something" to do is a great cover song that was originally released about 2 years ago on a compialtion.

I bought this only because I'm a Garbage completist, but this oral biography turned out to be quite good: written by Ben Graham, it's very informative and is especially insightful regarding song lyrics and musical influences. (Every song on all three albums is analyzed.) And the back cover has perhaps the loveliest photo of Shirley Manson ever taken. Recommended to all serious Garbage fans.
