Memorable.......2007-07-21

Memorable... is the best I can say. It is nice to hear the resounding voice of Johnny Maestro again. The track, "The Worst That Could Happen" is his best since "Sixteen Candles", recorded with the Crests too many years ago !

Great band - Fair compilation.......2007-03-16

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of those bands whose music has never really been properly represented. I wasn't around in the late 1960's or early 1970's so the following info is to the best of my knowledge. The band had 4 albums, 5 if you count the soundtrack for a film titled "Grasshopper" that the band appeared on. The first album was released in '68. It was actually self titled although it has some times been referred to as the "Worst that could happen" album. The second album, know as "The second album" was released in '69. The third album from '70 is where things get tricky. The third album,like the first album was also self titled. When discussing the bands self titled album(s), you have to verify what songs are on it. The third album included a cover of "Nights in white satin." The bands final album was released in I belive '72. This one was titled "Bridge in Blue." If my memory also serves, I belive at that point the band had for some reason shotrened its name to simply "Bridge." This compilation only really represents the 1st two albums. Yes there are a lot of good songs on it. But there could have been more. Songs like "Echo park" and "Nights in white satin" should have been included. It would been nice if someone would release the actual 4 albums on CD. That way no songs are left out. Like my title reads: Great band - Fair compilation.

One of my first CD's...and still one of my favs.......2005-12-30

Back in 2001 I just started getting cd's, and this one was one of my firsts I got. Now even though I've evolved more into the world of Psych. I still listen to this great cd. The songs "Glad She's A Women" and "Blessed Is The Rain" are especially good. They kinda make me feel rested and relaxed. All in all a great compilation of a great group.

A TRULY WONDERFUL COLLECTION. . ........2004-12-29

The former frontman for the legendary Crests and the Del-Satins, Johnny Maestro (John Mastrangelo), took lead vocals once again with this late 60s/early 70's pop vocal group. Unusually large at ten to eleven members, their sound was smooth and heartfelt (think Fifth Dimension crossed with the Association). They signed with Buddah and issued their first LP in 1969, scoring big with "The Worst That Could Happen" and "Blessed Is The Rain". Their subsequent LPs failed to generate the same sales as the debut, even though finely textured songs such as "Your Husband My Wife" and "Minstrel Sunday" continued their beautiful, romantic style. Kudos to the Collectables label for issuing a Best Of on LP, and eventually on CD. Twelve slices of Pop heaven, led by the incomparable Johnny Maestro. Enjoy!

Great interpretations by one of the best ever singers of pop music history. Johnny Maestro's voice is just like it has ever been: strong, warm and clear but with a distinct touch of sadness. All tracks can be found on their self produced CD however.

Imagine! It has been 50 years since a young singer from Brooklyn named Johnny Maestro made his very first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 with a tune called "Sweetest One". At that time, Johnny was the lead singer of a popular New York City doo-wop group known as the Crests. Shortly thereafter the Crests would release one of the most memorable doo-wop tunes of all-time "Sixteen Candles". For the remainder of that decade Johnny would find himself back on the charts with more hits by the Crests and with a few solo hits as well. After Johnny Maestro left the Crests in 1962 he kind of faded into oblivion until 1968 when he formed a new 11 man group he christened the Brooklyn Bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge made a splash on the charts in the late 60's and Johnny and the group have been pretty much performing together ever since.
In 2004, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge went back into the studio for the first time in decades to record "Today". It is an amazing recording and one of the most enjoyable discs I have heard in an awfully long time. Anyone I know who has ever seen the Brooklyn Bridge perform in concert has raved about them. Much like Jay Black of Jay and the Americans fame, 66 year old Johnny Maestro sounds as good or better today than he did when he was a young man. Take a listen to "Today" and I am sure that you will agree. You will hear several of the hits first recorded by the Crests including the aforementioned "Sixteen Candles", "The Angels Listened In", "Trouble In Paradise" "Step By Step" and "My Juanita". You also get to sample Johnny's sensational solo recording of "What A Surprise". I love that song! Also featured on this 25 track disc are 10 incredible acappella numbers that spotlight the vocal prowess of the Brooklyn Bridge as a group. I was absolutely stunned by just about all of them but most especially by the group's interpretation of The Harptones "Life Is But A Dream", The Orioles "Crying In The Chapel" and The Flamingos "I Only Have Eyes For You". I cannot believe I am saying this but these recordings are every bit as good if not better than the originals!!! Finally, "Today" presents new recordings of a number of hits made famous by the Brooklyn Bridge in the late 1960's. Hear outstanding new recordings of the group's biggest single of all time "The Worst That Could Happen" as well as "Blessed Is The Rain" and "Welcome Me Love". The set concludes with Johnny's thrilling lead vocal on the Rogers and Hammmerstein favorite "You'll Never Walk Alone".
For those who enjoy the music of the fifties and sixties "Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge Today" would be a wonderful addition to your library. It's nice to see that after all these years in the business Johnny Maestro is finally starting to get some well deserved recognition. Long live rock and roll and long live Johnny Maestro!!! Very highly recommended!!

The best at this point.......2007-05-07

I remember when this set was released in the early 1990's. I procrastinated in buying it and it disapeared (at least off of the store shelves). Now I finally own it and am very happy that I do. To date, this is the best collection of the bands music avaliable. The sound quality is also actually very good also. It would be nice if someone out there would re-release the groups 4 actual albums on CD. But this set does for the most part cover it all. However, "Nights in White satin" is still missing.

Spanning the Bridge.......2000-10-23

The Brooklyn Bridge featured the vocals of a doo wop legend, Johnny Maestro. He was the lead singer of the Crests who released one the essential doo wop records and one the first great rock songs "16 Candles". After that song, Mr. Maestro languished for most of the 60's until a band he was in joined forces with another band to form the Brooklyn Bridge. The first song they released, "Worst That Could Happen", became a huge hit, peaking at #3 in early 1969. That song is still a staple of oldies radio and gave Mr. Maestro new life. Sadly it was short lived. After two more minor hits, the beautiful "Welcome Me Love" and "Blessed Is The Rain", the band disappeared from the charts and they broke up shortly afterwards. This set is a little excessive, but it does give you just about ever song the band recorded. That's good and bad as the first disk contains the above three songs and a couple of other good numbers in "School Days" and "Requiem", but the second disk doesn't offer much.

Those who have listened over the years to the Tokens, or those who think they are a one-hit wonder (The Lion Sleeps Tonight) need to purchase this gem! I defy anyone to listen without getting up and dancing, or at least tapping a toe. The latin style is a substantial and very welcome departure from their other, rather mediocre compositions. And the artistry almost makes me think these Tokens are not the same ones that produced all the other albums. I have over 300 CD's and 100 cassettes, and I keep coming back to this one when I need my spirits lifted!
