Bristol's Massive Attack released a classic with their first album, Blue Lines, but only those who were paying careful attention noticed; soon, they were overshadowed by the likes of Tricky and Portishead, who were colleagues. But not so after the release of Protection, which sported a massive hit and was just as critically acclaimed as their first album. (The hit was the title track, for which Everything but the Girl's Tracy Thorn lent her divine pipes--a move that made the act's name, and also presaged EBTG's move to the dance floor.) Eschewing the showmanship of their scene mates, Massive prefer subtler soundscapes and using a diverse range of vocalists (including Horace Andy, Nicolette, and Tricky) who give them a number of flavors and moods with which to work. as usual, i order a cd like 'protection' for a song or two. then i get a great surprise.

in this case, it's the title track, with vocals by tracey thorn. thorn, along with lisa gerrard, dusty springfield, doris day, billie holiday, aretha franklin and a few others, has a uniquely gorgeous voice and styling that is immediately identifiable for so many things--a social scene, a certain era, a mood.

unlike the others, she has still to get her due and fame as a singer. here's hoping that people will use her and get her heard as much as the law will allow.

A lot of people prefer blue lines over protection and I just don't understand that. I found protection to be great. Possibly one of the best CDs that Massive attack has ever released other than Mezzanine. Eurochild is mindblowingly amazing. Karmacoma, Better things, Heat Miser, weather storm and spying glass are also exceptional. The only reason I don't give this a 5 star rating is cause of the last track. A cover of the Doors, Light my fire that, to me, seems very pointless.

timeless album!!.......2006-04-18

Eleven years have pass since Massive Attack came out with this album, and when i listen to it, still sounding as fresh and new as that then it?s an amazing work , with the colaboration of the also amaizing Craig Armstrong, Tracy Thorn and Tricky .

I have always thought that melancholy it?s the ?nice?part of being sad, well this is the feeling in this CD . With sublime work on the piano made by Armstrong and the angel voice of Tracy Thorn (Everything But The Girl) this three guys made a classic album that is going to last forever , full of inovative sounds, vocals and deep feeling. While others reviewers think of it as a dark album (which really is , i?m not going to desagree) i think of it more as a beawtiful and melancholic album but no matter how we feel it, this is a most have!!!!

No matter what kind of music you like this is one of those albums that have something for everybody unless you like Paulina Rubio

If this album would not have included ?Lite My Fire? this could have been call PERFECTION instead of PROTECTION

Massive Attack does not go the protective route on Sophomore CD.......2006-04-15

After hearing about Massive Attack from a friend I decided to check out some of their songs. The production on this album is completely solid. If this album was nothing but an instrumental piece it would recieve 5 stars from me, however, the lyrics and vocals of several of the songs (more directly Karmacoma & Three)brought the albums rating down one star.

Album highlights include: "Protection," "Spying Glass," "Weather Storm," and "Sly"
Album embarissment: "Light my Fire (Live)" -- this is the only track I skip when listening to the record.

If you like Massive Attack I would recommend listening to Telepopmusik. As soon as I put in this CD I thought of them. Amazing french Trip-hop band known for the song "Breathe"

i like how the people who wrote negative reviews, did so in the year 2005. this album was released in '94. back in those days this album was excellent, with tracy singing in the right key and all! more than one can say for portishead. yeah, of course newer chill albums are going to sound better and fresher. if you spend all day listening to bt, then yeah, kraftwerk is going to sound a bit boring. does that mean that kraftwerk's albums sucked? NO! hell NO!

Awesome Lounge CD!.......2006-02-03

I accidentally discovered this album at a CD shop in South Beach. Do not judge this CD by its cover. It appears fairly plain, with no big-name DJs on the back. Once I put the disc in - I was amazed! Some of the best lounge/downtempo tracks I've ever heard in my life. This is a CD you can play from start to finish - there is not a single bad track on it. My favorites are #4 and #10. This CD is totally different, and not like some boring "chill-out" that dominates this genre. The music here is sexy, different, and never gets old. Give it a try - you won't regret it.

Winter Morning: Behind the music with Shirley Cason - The reason why this CD was titled Winter Morning is because the inspiration for every song came to me only during the winter mornings hours.

The first song recorded was "Winter Skies". Looking at the sky in the morning from the studio window was so relaxing. The music just went along with the slow moving clouds. The lyrics in the next song, "Beauty of the Earth", "and we are the children of the universe, together we all will survive", just bubbled out of my heart. I truly believe we are all connected to each other, and the universe. The 3rd song, "Icicle Melt" is from the dripping of the icicles melting off the house. The song "10 Degrees", really tells it like it was this winter in the Northeast. But then, I relaxed back in the soft quite Winter Morning; which is track 5. Being that it snowed, and snowed and some more, I was captured by looking at how the snowflakes would dance in the wind, from this came the song "Snow Dance". Now, having all this snow around the next event naturally occurred. "Children and Snowmen" were popping up everywhere outside. I even built a myself. I brought some snow in for the cats to play with, but they preferred just to look at it out the.. The last song is very truthful and humorous at the same time. Even though this winter was so beautiful...I am guilty of being a. and going on vacation in the Gulf of Florida every winter for a week to get out of the cold.

All of the music for "Winter Mornings" came to Shirley Cason during the early hours of winter days, hence the title. Played on various keyboards, several of the selections have a cool, ambient feel while others are more melodic and structured. "Beauty of the Earth" opens the CD with a gentle song about God and Earth's marriage, and all of us being the children of their universe. "Winter Skies" is a bit more orchestrated, depicting an icy coolness and the stillness of early morning. Ambient and floating, this is a very effective piece. "Icicle Melt" comes from the dripping sounds of icicles melting off the house. Electronic and elegant, this piece is much more ambient than melodic, and has a very shimmering beauty. "10 Degrees" is my favorite track. Darkly beautiful, it is like the light dancing and sparkling off of early morning snow. There is also a sense of mystery and of a vastness that works really well. "Snow Dance" is almost a musical Christmas card. Gentle bell-like sounds create the feeling of snowflakes swirling and of morning light bouncing off of the surface of the snow. Very serene and peaceful with a gentle rhythm for the dance. "Children and Snowmen" is a bit lighter although it is far from bright and carefree. The piece becomes more orchestrated as it develops, and would be lovely as the soundtrack to a scene of winter activities. The CD closes with "Gulf of Florida," a musical admission of needing to flee the snow for a week each year to warm up. It's a very charming way to end this chilly and evocative collection. "Winter Mornings" is a wonderful CD for relaxing or cozying up to a winter fire. Very enjoyable!

2 cd set, just absolutely wonderful. A lot of break-beat and ambient feels without the new age BS. Some solid artists such as LTJ that happen to grace this album. On occasions, the second cd can kind of sound like porno music, but I really don't care, I dig it. I will admit there is a track or two that I don't care for, but when i'm just sitting back, chillin', it doesn't really matter.

Arabic Chillout (and volume 2 from this series, as well) is a well-compiled, mood-enhancing, beat-infused but relaxing compilation of tracks that are either by artists from that region or western artists who produce tracks with a distinctly eastern feel. You probably already know Thievery Corporation, Natacha Atlas, Christophe Goze, and Radar.....if you like their style, you'll enjoy the rest of the tracks on this 2-album set. Recommended!

an outstanding chillout.....get it!.......2004-06-03

Even though I have a very wide musical taste, I've never been a particularly huge fan of middle east music. That was before I came upon this CD. Kept hearing it playing in various places in Indonesia last month (Bali) and brought it home to rave reviews by all my friends. Definitely an ambient chillout worth having.

This is possibly the best the best Arabic music I've heard in a long time. It's an got an incredible mellow mix of deep groovy rhythms combined with the mysterious icy ambiance of Arabic music's rich heritage. Definately a must for any fan of modern Middle Eastern music!

Good CD.......2005-06-13

I have only recently started listening to downbeat, chillout type music. I have always liked house music so my taste in chillout is more geared towards this kind of CD with a bit more beat than the typical chillout selection.

I have bought other chillout CDs that left me really bored. Aside from a few lame tracks on this double CD set, the set is really good. Downbeat enought to calm you but enough beat and interest to make you wish you were at a trendy bar in New York or Paris.

Good selection...would buy again.
