    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Quirky appreciation of pop songs.......2003-12-03

I came to this CD because it contains Cornershop's excellent version (in Punjabi) of Norwegian Wood. The CD is a top-notch collection of covers -- from Shaft to Sonny Bono. Too bad volumes II and III are so expensive. I'd buy them in a heartbeat.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but Volume 2 is better........2002-05-16

A cover of tunes, mostly English-language songs, which are done in various styles from downtempo to neo-lounge to samba. Some of these songs are downright superb... "Barbie Girl" "Sex Machine" and "Happy Together." Unlike its sibling, however, it does have some filler: "Norwegian Woods" "Fun Lovin' Criminals" and "Shaft." Curiously, many of the bands aren't French, most of the tunes are in English, and many of the songs aren't so much from Paris' past. But it's still great and your friends will almost certainly ask, "Is this really The Beat Goes On? Where did you find this?"
