A year after his slickly produced recording debut launched him on a meteoric course to stardom, this combo CD/DVD set chronicles Michael Buble's crowd-pleasing live performances before amphitheater-sized crowds on a triumphant national tour. The audio portion kicks off with pair of new studio recordings again reinforce the 20-something Canadian heartthrob's 1950s-something artistic tack with mixed results: "Nice 'n' Easy" has a Sinatra-faithful jazzy swing; the overproduced, somnambulistic "Can't Help Falling in Love" evokes Perry Como more than Elvis. The remainder of the audio CD is comprised mostly of live versions of songs from Buble's debut, with his takes of "My Funny Valentine," "Fever," Van Morrison's "Moondance" and "Mack the Knife" again suggesting that Buble has an ear cocked wisely towards the Bobby Darin oeuvre. But with the notable exception of three elegant live-in-studio performances culled from Sessions@AOL, the live DVD does Buble's undeniabl! y charming stage presence a great disservice. Intercut awkwardly with offstage comments by Buble and his band, the balance of that disc suffers from an MTV-inspired, cut/dissolve-every-three-seconds style that's intended to focus one's attention, but does exactly the opposite. If sudden stardom virtually guarantees that Buble's impossibly smooth, expressive voice seldom ventures very far outside the Sinatra/Darin mold here, hopefully he'll leverage that fame towards greater artistic challenges in the near future. --Jerry McCulley

This is a dynamite duo: cd/dvd!!! I first heard Michael Buble music in the Spring of 2005. The first purchase was It's Time, which is mind-blowing good!!! Come fly with me is awesome! The music is out of this world, and in my opinion, he sounds better than the original singers in the remakes he sings. WOW!!! The DVD is great! It shows his sense of humor, as well as his sensitive side. And there is no denying that he is an absolutely talented and amazing singer! The band is second to none as well! My impression of his talent was cemented even further when I saw his Concert in Spokane, WA in July of 2006. He never missed a beat and his voice was perfectly in tune. I have shared my excitement about his music and how it has touched my life with all of my friends, and have converted many of them to also be faithful fans of Michael's music. I now own almost all of his CD's and cannot wait to get the next one!

When critics refer to Sinatra's Capitol albums, their highest praise is usually reserved for the dark melancholy of Wee Small Hours or Only the Lonely. But the upbeat "Swinging" records should not be ignored. Probably the finest of these albums is Come Fly with Me. The first of Sinatra's albums with arranger Billy May (whose arrangements have been overshadowed by Nelson Riddle's), Fly is the conceptual equal of Lonely-a carefree, romantic musical travelogue. From the opening invitation--one of Sinatra's most rollicking vocals--to the tender invocations of "Autumn in New York" and "April in Paris," and the serene seductiveness of "Moonlight in Vermont," Sinatra personified the modern traveler--jaunty, cosmopolitan, irrefutably cool. --Steven Mirkin

Grat album, Mastered a little too loud.......2007-07-18

A great Frank Sinatra album at his best vocally. Being a sound engineer I must admit a bit of dissapointment at the Re-mastering of this CD....Why push the volume up so much on these old analog recordings...I understand that everyone wants to be as loud as Diana Kralls last CD, but they souldn't do it at the expense or the overall sound....Fortunatly Sinatra's voice wasn't affected much, but the big band sometimes sounds a little distorted...I'm sure it didn't on the original LP.

I'm sure that most folks don't even hear these things....But there ya go.

Frank could sell a song without even trying--and that's no small feat !!!.......2007-06-09

Frank Sinatra justly deserves to be forever remembered for his marvelous singing both on his record albums and in concert; when I was younger I played this record so much I nearly wore the grooves off the vinyl! Come Fly With Me features Frank in excellent form; and the arrangements shine with that distinct Billy May sound that will make you fall in love with CD the very first time you hear it. There are three bonus tracks at the end of the CD that feature Nelson Riddle arrangements as well.

The CD track set begins with the title track, "Come Fly With Me." "Come Fly With Me" boasts a breezy, cheerful melody and Frank sings this number so enthusiastically without a single superfluous note. Awesome! "Come Fly With Me" makes for a strong beginning to this CD. "Around The World" lets Frank sing this song to the tune of "Around The World In Eighty Days;" but Frank clearly makes this his own as he sings with a sublime panache; and the melody with its emphasis on the strings enhances the beauty of this number.

Other gems on this CD include the beautiful "Isle Of Capri;" this song features Frank singing of two ships that pass in the night. In addition, "Moonlight In Vermont" and "Autumn In New York" showcase Frank performing sensitive romantic ballads with slow tempi that glisten like only pure gold ever could!

"Let's Get Away From It All" switches back to a much more playful romantic number and Frank bats this one straight out of the ballpark as only Frank ever could. The musical arrangement by Billy May makes good use of the horns and percussion; this mixed with Frank Sinatra's upbeat singing provides us with a cheerful song that celebrates the joys of love. "Brazil" also sports a catchy melody that stuns you with its beauty as Frank performs the vocals to perfection.

The CD also gives you three bonus tracks that were not on the original record album. You get "Chicago;" "South Of The Border" and "I Love Paris." "Chicago" gets the royal treatment from Sinatra as he sings this number with panache and a very high level of sophistication. Frank's excellent diction lights up the beauty of "Chicago;" and the musical arrangement by Nelson Riddle makes excellent use of the strings, percussion and horns. "South Of The Border" is another playful, joyous number that celebrates the joys of enjoying a romantic fling; and "I Love Paris," the final track, provides a very strong ending for this romantic album that once again rejoices in the joys of love as it is found all over the globe. Great!

The liner notes include a very informative essay about Sinatra and his work on this CD with both Billy May and Nelson Riddle. You get the song credits and recording dates; and the artwork is awesome, too!

Overall, Sinatra fans will consider this to be a "must-have" for their collections; and anyone who enjoys classic pop vocals will love this CD, too. This album would also make an excellent introduction to Frank Sinatra for anyone who wants to become acquainted with his singularly beautiful artistry.

Frank Flys Sky High.......2007-05-31

With his 1957 Come Fly With Me recording, Sinatra continued his theme based album concept - all the songs on this date are about travel. The arrangements and lyrics capture perfectly the mood of the country in 1957, somewhat sleepy, comfortable, dreaming of getting away, the concern for the massive problems of race relationships about to erupt remaining tucked away in our collective subconscious. And that's probably the point with Sinatra; he had that elegance that could make you forget about whatever travail bothered you or was about to bother you. Even the album cover- a perfect rendition of a TWA turbo prop Constellation- harkens you back to an era when it was simpler, if not altogether safer to cast your fate to the wind and get on a plane and go somewhere. But just when you thought it was safe to snooze through this collection, Sinatra almost screams "Hey, pack up, let's fly away." OK Frank. Take me where thou wilst.

It's oh so nice to come home.......2006-11-22

This fantastic release from Rat Pack-era Sinatra from the Capitol years contains songs about traveling and is representative of his best work: His voice is in peak form, the songs are all fantastic and Billy May's arrangements are exceptional. This is that magical combination that made him the favorite of so many. Sinatra really shows off his singing talents here, especially on "Moonlight in Vermont" and "April in Paris." Superb. Some of the songs are slower in tempo ("London by Night"), while others pick up and take wing ("Brazil," the title track). These are mostly love songs, with Frank either addressing his love directly or singing about a romp with this gal or that one. He promises the world and he was cosmopolitan enough to deliver. From these songs, it is easy to see why women were so taken with him. Complementing Sinatra perfectly are some outstanding arrangements by Billy May and, on the last three bonus tracks, Nelson Riddle. There is mystical enchantment on "London by Night" and one doesn't need to leave the continent to hear the ocean waves of "Blue Hawaii." The band is flawless and sounds really inspired here. Another incentive to purchase this CD (not that one is necessary) is the addition of three bonus tracks, which were not on the original 1957 release. This adds nearly seven minutes to the total, making the runtime almost forty-six minutes. Most of his studio releases from that time ran a scant thirty to thirty-five minutes, making this one that much more worth the cost. Buy it!

Come Fly With Frank.......2006-08-05

Here's a lesson for rock music fans: it was Frank Sinatra, not some rock 'n' roll act, who invented the concept album. Although none of Sinatra's concept albums tell any actual stories from beginning to end, they each have unifying themes to them. "Only The Lonely" is about loneliness, "In The Wee Small Hours" is about lost love, and, on the upbeat side, there's this equally marvelous concept album from 1957, "Come Fly With Me," with songs all about travel. Backed by conducter Billy May and his orchestra, Frank takes the listener on a trip around the world. Inviting us on the journey with the fun, opening title song, Frank takes us to the "Aisle Of Capri," we enjoy together the "Moonlight In Vermont" and the "Autumn In New York," take in "April In Paris," view "London By Night," and see the sights of "Brazil" and "Blue Hawaii," among a few other places, before Frank takes us back home again and remarks that "It's Nice To Go Trav'ling." And for an encore, the "Come Fly With Me" CD concludes with three bonus tracks, with Sinatra's excellent renderings of "Chicago," "South Of The Border," and "I Love Paris," with backing by Nelson Riddle. The songs are classic, Sinatra's voice is in supreme, prime form, and the orchestrations are wonderful. Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me" is one of his very best recordings. So climb aboard, and come fly with Frank!

Steven Spielberg veered from the futuristic sci-fi flirtations of A.I. and Minority Report with this brisk, stylish period take on the career of teen con-man extraordinaire Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his dogged G-man pursuer/de facto extended family member Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks). As always, the director's musical collaborator is John Williams, and the scoring legend uses the occasion of their 20th collaboration as a rewarding musical journey back to the days when he was known as Johnny Williams, ambitious young pianist for Henry Mancini on such early jazz scores as Peter Gunn. Informed by a half-century of subsequent achievement, Williams's return to the jazz idiom of his youth yields a smart, nervous score that evokes more than mere nostalgia. But with Dan Higgins's moody sax often leading the way, the veteran composer's work here seems more evocative reinvention than revisitation, yet another tribute to his uncanny ability to make any idiom his own. A handful of pop standards (including Sinatra's "Come Fly with Me," Getz and Gilberto's "Girl from Ipanema," "The Christmas Song" by Nat "King" Cole) deftly color both period and plot, but, as always, it's Williams who provides Spielberg's masterful imagery with its musical life's blood. --Jerry McCulley

Johnny's "Lost in Soundtrack".......2006-08-25

The opening theme is the coolest ever. It has that jazzy, suspenseful, space-age groove that takes you back to the early 60's era portrayed in the movie.

Once I discovered it was done by John Williams, things started to click. The arrangement and themes actually go back way before he was famous. Back to an era he may not want you to remember. Back when he was known simply as "Johnny" Williams.

First, notice the melody and pace of the creeping marimbas and bubbling flutes. Next, catch a repeat of the old Sci-Fi, TV Fairy-Tale known as "LOST IN SPACE." Listen for the incidental, suspense-scene music throughout. Did you catch the composer's name in the credits?

I loved the movie and now the music. I think it is one of the most original soundtracks that John Williams has ever done. The Jazz in this music is so peaceful and lighthearted. This soundtrack should be on any music lovers shelf. In my book, this music is a classic film score.

A Great "Catch".......2004-10-04

Steven Spielberg's 2002 film CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was a breezy crime caper movie based on the true-life story of Frank Abagnale, a real "phony" who nevertheless embarked on a three-year spree of writing bum checks adding up to millions during the 1960s. To capture that era's swinging mores, he had his great friend John Williams design one of that composer's quirkiest scores ever--very jazzy and redolent of the scores Henry Mancini devised for the "Pink Panther" films and Stanley Donen's 1963 classic CHARADE.

But for Williams, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was very much a homecoming, as he started out in jazz and even worked quite closely with Mancini early on in Hollywood. The genuine jauntiness and mystery of the film's main musical motifs are balanced by moments of warm but not mushy sentimentality, and hit songs of that period by Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, and Dusty Springfield round out this appealing collection.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was such an offbeat project for a composer and a director known for boldness, but it served as a challenge that Spielberg aced on the screen and Williams aced in his music. It is highly recommended for its sheer audacity in going back to the past and still remaining relevant to today.

Essential Performances from a Great & Beloved Singer.......2004-01-09

For those of us who grew up on Janet Baker's recordings (and were lucky enough to hear her "live" as well), the sound of her voice and her singular artstic personality - British restraint coupled with fierce emotional and spiritual commitment - are indelibly imprinted in our minds and hearts. The closest current equivalent is Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, another superb artist who has charted her own course, and not surprisingly there is some overlap of repertoire, in the music of J.S. Bach, of course, but also Berlioz's Didon and Beatrice, Handel's Ariodante and Britten's Phaedra (composed for Baker).
This wonderful compilation is complementary to EMI's 2-CD "The Very Best of Janet Baker" -- no overlap of repertoire whatsoever. Unlike that set, which focused on concert repertoire (with orchestra or piano) there's a generous sampling here of Baker's operatic roles including Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, and Britten. Also welcome is "Phaedra," one of Britten's strongest late works. And it's good to have the Berlioz: "Cleopatre" and "Herminie" complete, the big aria from "Beatrice et Benedict." (Why EMI included nothing from her recording of the last 2 scenes of "Les Troyens" is unfathomable.) The wide time-span allows us to hear Baker's voice in all its youthful, "sappy" warmth, as well as in its artistic maturity (though truth to tell she was pretty much a complete artist from the start). There are a few signs of wear in later items, nothing serious, in fact rather less than I remembered. I could have done with fewer of the "Arie Amorose" in favor of more cuts from her Gluck LP, which I believe has never been issued complete on CD, but that's just personal preference. The focus here is entirely on orchestrally accompanied works (or, in the case of the marvelous early disc of Ravel, Chausson & Delage songs, with chamber ensemble) so for Baker the supreme interpreter of English, German and French song you'll need to go elsewhere (the EMI has a fair sampling, especially of her Schubert). But everything here is indispensible.

Fly with Buble anytime!!!!!!.......2006-08-30

I am a fan of Micheall Buble, so anything he puts out is "first class!!! A very well done DVD & an insight to what goes on when not performing. IT IS SUPER IN EVERY WAY!!!!!!

Completely Obsolete as of 2005.......2006-02-16

This DVD was the first one released by Michael Buble, and I bought it in hopes of seeing some of his live performances. There are segments of performances, but the editing and fast, wild cuts from one angle to the next to the next to the next really detract from the overall effect. The performances get largely lost. What remains is a LOT of footage of Michael and his original bandmembers drinking, clubbing, gambling, womanizing, and generally acting like rowdy frat boys.

If you really want to be wowed and experience what a live Buble concert is like, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "Caught in the Act". This DVD lives up to it's name as part of the PBS Great Performances series produced by David Foster. "Caught in the Act" is slick, glossy, flashy, enormously fun and absolutely true to the real experience. I've seen Buble perform live twice, and I can attest that "Caught in the Act" is just about as good as being there.

Buy the CD, wait for a better DVD!!.......2005-08-13

I bought this DVD after the last CD, which I LOVE and haven't stopped listening to since I got it, which is why I was all the more dissappointed by the horrible production in the DVD. The "live" video parts are just a horrible mesh of fade-in, fade-outs, b&w, cut to another take... enough to give you motion sickness! (and I love mtv, so its not that). the music is fantastic, but i would advice to buy a cd instead and wait for a better dvd to come out. he does come through as a pretty nice guy in the short inverview bits, but even those are with a camera thats jumping every which way in a moving car (thank god for traffic lights, at least when the car stops the camera stays still). advice to michael: stay AWAY from whoever edited this horrible thing.

Good. Can be much better by cutting meaningless fillers........2005-07-19

M. Buble is excellent in his singing! It looks like the producer had tried hard to promote the artist or to lengthen the recording time by adding many minutes of blah blah fillers in between songs which break the listensers' attention. The recording quality is a bit better than the sixties. At times, the brass sounds are not as clear and as sharp as the rest of the orchestra. As sound quality, it is around 3/5 as compared to Diana Krall's Live in Paris. Regrettable! I hate to press the fast forward button. In constrast, I have often used the repeat chapter button when listening to "Live In Paris"!

Nice and simple!.......2005-04-25

The star rating is for the music. Michael sings many popular songs and must face the possibility of being compared to the people that made tem popular. Many people in that position do funny things with the music, thinking that they have to make it unique; Michael does not have to do this (with little exception). He is just being his self and it is great just the way he is.

On the other hand this package also contains a DVD which can make great jewelry or maybe hung from a tree to scare birds. It is like one big sound bite; there is no constancy or course to his rattling. On the technical side the soundtrack is out of sing with the video. The video itself looks like the Blair Witch Project; it can not hold steady or focus.

OLD SCHOOL! 1st CLASS!.......2007-01-04

All time master shines once again! Dave is a sort of "new-old" discovery to me. I have a few old Dave cd`s from GRP era (I am a sucker for that old GRP sound), but never took the time to listen to new stuff! But, when I heard samples from this cd, not only that I bought it, I also bought "World on a String"! This cd is so natural, so rich, so vivid...it doesn`t sound like it was released a few months ago! Anyway, buy it if you love the old fusion-jazz-latin sound! You will be very pleased!

A voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-02-07

This is an excellent sampling of Handel's music and it is indeed "heavenly". Much of the music in Handel's operas, cantatas and oratorios are wonderfully vivid pieces of musical painting, and show Handel's genius in a light that is somewhat unfamiliar to modern musicians. Such passages as the sleep of Somnus in 'Semele' and the moonrise in 'Ariodante', to name but two instances out of many,form an important link in the history of programme music. But to those who understand and enjoy the Handelian idiom its beauty appear eternally new, and its unfailing dignity and loftiness of style recall the words in which Edward FitzGerald summed up his opinion of Handel: "His is the music for a great active people." I have many of the discs already, but some of the songs were new to me for which I am grateful! Some of the high points for me: the duet from Guilio Cesare sung by contralto(Stephanie Blythe) and countertenor (Derek Ragin); the solo from Alcina sung by Arleen Auger(soprano)and David Daniel's rendition of "Ombra mai fu" from Serse. I have Andreas Scholl singing "Ombra" and I never realized how much more there is to that song till I heard Daniels sing it. Anyway this record is a great buy for Handelians.

Best of the Best...Handelian Masters for the Uninitiated.......2005-04-21

For those who would prefer their Handel in bite-size portions, this excellent two-disc set may do the trick. Virgin Classics has chosen stellar aria and duet selections from their extensive Handel discography (1978-2003) and in the process, come up with as definitive a collection of the prolific composer's work as any on the market now. With a running time of well over 2 ½ hours, this compilation covers a broad canvas drawn from some of Handel's finest Italian operas, such as "Rodelinda", "Giulio Cesare", "Rinaldo" and "Deidamia". Even more, there are selections from his English works ("Hercules" and "L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato"), as well as miscellaneous vocal Italianate selections.

You know you're in for a world-class set when you have the amazing countertenor David Daniels book-ending the collection, beginning with his platinum-standard version of the much-covered "Frondi tenere...Ombra mai fù" from "Serse" and Bertarido's mournful "Pompe vane di morte!...Dove sei, amato bene" from "Rodelinda". And the set ends in a dream-like state with his wondrous Sesto/Cornelia duet with contralto Stephanie Blythe on the heartbreaking "Madre...Son nata a lagrimar" from "Giulio Cesare". In between is a veritable feast provided by a who's who among the world's leading Handelians. Highlights on disc one include soprano Sandrine Piau and alto Sara Mingardo melding effortlessly on the graceful and vocally challenging "Sorge il di" from the Neapolitan serenata, "Aci, Galatea e Polifemo". Blythe captures Dejanira's requisite madness beautifully in the air, "Where shall I fly?" from "Hercules". Countertenor Gérard Lesne does several thrilling turns on an entire Handel cantata, "Splenda l'alba in oriente". From "Giulio Cesare", legendary contralto Janet Baker contributes a heroically measured "How silently, how slyly", equally revered countertenor James Bowman glides over "Upstart, barbarian and traitor" with true panache, and soprano Valerie Masterson holds her own among these giants showing a diverse range of emotion on "Flow my tears" alternating easily between sonorous and vibrant.

Disc two starts with mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux displaying some genuinely impressive runs on two arias from "Arminio", "Fatto scorta al sentier della gloria" and "Fiaccherò qul fiero orgoglio". Soprano Arleen Auger does a defiantly passionate turn on "Ombre pallide" from "Alcina", which compares favorably with Renée Fleming's more familiar version on Elektra. Daniels has yet another powerful vocal turn on the victorious "Venti, turbini" aria from "Rinaldo". Piau returns as well, this time intertwining atmospherically with mezzo-soprano Gloria Banditelli on the splendid "Prendi l'alma e prendi il core" from "Rodrigo". Operas are not the only source here. There is a charming duet between soprano Suzie LeBlanc and countertenor Derek Lee Ragin on the effusively Italianate "Tanti strali al sen", and a more dramatically diverse one between tenor Paul Agnew and soprano Patricia Petibon on "Caro autor do mia doglia" - both showcase yet another dimension of Handel to which I have not been exposed. Truth be told, if you enjoy these selections, you should purchase the original recordings, for example, Daniels' wonderful 1998 "Handel: Operatic Arias". But this will do in a pinch for the uninitiated who want an overview of Handel's musical genius. Trust me, with this stellar group of Handelians, you will beg for more.

As Always, Hilarious.......2007-05-03

This is so funny! Like all the Forbidden Broadway cds, its another knock-out. I feel like such a crazy person when I am in the car driving and I just burst out laughing. Its great and a must have for any Forbidden Broadway fan.

Spoof Odessey worth the laughs!.......2002-04-14

I enjoyed "Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey." This recording has some truly genius material, and although these actors' impersonations of famous Broadway stars aren't as strong as they have been in the past, the CD has a lot to recommend it.

Particularly strong is Track 16, "Let's do an old fashioned show tune," featuring Elton John and Ethel Merman duking it out over AIDA, which Merman says is "putting everyone here through hell." Likewise, Track 15, "Let's Ruin Times Square Again," tickles my funny bone. Also wonderful are the satires of Beauty and the Beast, Angela Lansbury, and the Full Monty; Gerard Alessandrini's done a tremendous job with these! In addition, this CD's introductory song is much stronger than those on the previous volumes of Forbidden Broadway. It really sets the tone for the best parts of this recording.

Unfortunately, with a few notable exceptions, the first half of the CD is a bit thin, which is why I give this recording 3 out of 5 stars: Even though it entertains me, there's a lot I have to skip over. For example, the Liza Minelli spoof annoying (though, I admit, a little funny), and in the Music Man revival satire, their Robert Preston impersonator sounds *nothing* like the original. (In earlier recordings, the actors *did* sound like the people they claimed to be.)

The good news is that the CD has 30 tracks in all, so even though there are 13 that I dislike, I just love the rest... I do recommend it!

better to be "Lost in Space".......2001-12-31

First and foremost, this CD is really for diehard fans of Forbidden Broadway, those of us who want the good, the bad and the ugly on the cd rack. I was extremely unimpressed with the latest offering.

While I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is some nice work, I don't know that Saturday Night Fiasco and Sondheim's Blues are sufficient to carry the rest of the tracks. Not much seems new or worse yet, important. Disney isn't new, nor is Les Miz. And while pointing out what is stale and pedestrian on Broadway was amusing on the last couple of releases, this Forbidden Broadway spoof clearly has joined the list of stale and pedestrian.

While there is some nice material on this disc, I really didn't laugh out loud, and that is why I have always bought these in the past.

If Alessandrini reduces the show to the same complaints of the same shows and then replaying lightly tweaked versions of past numbers, Trouble and Alan Cumming in Cabaret specifically, then he has himself is on the becoming a revival - and we know what he thinks of revivals.

The repeats might even be acceptable if there was something fresh in the perfomance, but both were done much better on their respective discs. I think Danny Gurwin is a great comedian, but he doesn't shine in either of these numbers. We also need a recording with no Ethel Merman or Liza numbers - give them a rest already. And why bring back Streisand with such a poor imitation? The earlier Barbara's were dead on vocal impressions as well as speech patterns. If you aren't going to improve on it, then don't drag it back out.

Alessandrini suggests that this is one of the best casts he has ever worked with. I don't know what he bases that on, but I beg to differ, either cast with Bryan Batt was significantly better, although they worked with fresh, clever material. Still, those recordings had verocious talent that brought Gerard's stinging wit to life for those of us who can't see every new production of FB.

Maybe it is time to go to off Broadway productions, or to the radio or the movies for some new ideas. Or else promise no references to the Gap, Disney, or Chorus Boys, (way over used on this recording), along with a Merman and Liza free season. Start from scratch. That might give us hope that Forbidden Broadway too might not be dead.

Stretched Thin.......2001-03-26

I just saw the stage production of Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey. I agree with the other reviewers who feel that Alessandrini is no longer at the top of his game. Perhaps he should lay off for a year or three and let Broadway present new things for him to lampoon - as it always will.

The opening sequence is forced and unfunny, and clearly in place only to batter the listener with the "2001" theme. Unlike a previous reviewer, I found the Judi Dench parody hysterical, though I question its accuracy.

The "Trouble" parody is, as it always was, incomplete and thin. My dear friend John Kenrick (...) did a better job with it - included the segments of the original song that GA left out, and in a funnier fashion. The Cole Porter parody is marginally amusing, but the Brian Mitchell/Marin Mazzie parody is dead on the mark, and VERY funny.

The parody of Cheryl Ladd remains in the show, although she's no longer in "Annie Get Your Gun" - Reba McIntyre is now in the role. Similarly, he stabs at Alan Cumming, who is no longer playing the Emcee. These numbers, while funny, lack punch. On the other hand, he once again skewers long time target Patti LuPone with an hysterical new parody of Being Alive. I suppose she's innately funnier, after all these years, than Alan Cumming, who is, after all, a relative newcomer.

The Rocky Horror parody is amusing, and the observation that sex has moved off 42nd Street and onto the Broadway stage is not without merit. The Beauty parody is amusing, and apt, but as has already been noted, GA has been clobbering us with the Disnification of Broadway for years now. I suppose he finds some glee in the fading success of this particular show.

I must say that while Gurwin is not the greatest singer, "Sondheim's Blues" is the most brilliant piece I've heard from Alessandrini in years. It's absolutely dead on. The friends I was with had never seen nor heard "Follies" and completely missed the point, but I was in stitches.

The "10 Years More" (which does not appear on this album, but remains in the show) has really begun to wear thin, especially with the closing this year of Cats and Miss Saigon. The Cameron Macintosh British mega-musicals are finally releasing their grip on Broadway, and this isn't as funny any more.

Broadway, despite the naysayers, will never die... and apparently, neither will Forbidden Broadway. I don't think it should - but I do think it needs a rest.

Do the Math.......2001-03-15

Four CDs cover the first 20 Years of Forbidden Broadway, Gerard Alessandrini's viciously witty satire of New York Theatre. The last year has seen Three new CDs, FB "Cleans Up Its Act" "20th Anniversary Edition" and now "2001 a Spoof Odyssey". Do the math.

Alessandrini is running out of ideas, and is spreading the remaining ones too thin. . Sanitized Time Square - Been there. Disnified Broadway - Done that, and so many times. Asinine casting faux pas, plotless pointless set-monster musicals, and Ethel Merman and Liza. We've heard it all before - and last time, it was funnier.

Now normally when a writer (or director or actor) has truly entertained me on numerous occasions, I'll forgive the odd show that disappoints. This would be the case here except for two things: Alessandrini is in the vicious parody business - he's never spared anyone else Besides, if he's going to actually include couplets like: "If lyrics are no longer witty... Then I don't want to go " he's inviting the pans.

When you hear the AIDA lampoon, you'll be reminded of the dim bulb in Cyrano de Bergerac who taunts the hero with the brilliant witticism: Your nose is very large

Yes, there are a few true Forbidden Broadway tracks on Spoof Odyssey. Dame Judi Dench singing "Why can't Americans do theatre like the Brits?" (with apologies to My Fair Lady), I Hate Ben (with apologies to Kiss Me Kate) and about 1/3 of "Let's Ruin Time Square Again" (no apologies necessary to Rocky Horror which understands how easy it is for good parody to go bad). Oh yes, there is one absolutely true Forbidden Broadway track: TROUBLE - yes, the same Trouble from Volume 3 which was just re-released on the 20th Anniversary compilation - and it's back again with a more hackneyed Robert Preston impersonation and all of 4 words changed. Granted it's one of the better bits, more worthy of rerunning than say, referring to Miss Saigon as Viet-Numb, but oh, he reran that gag too

Exquisite tenor singing and songs of incredible beauty.......2001-10-02

My acquaintance with Sergei Larin was made through his performances of Verdi, Puccini and verismo works. And I have always been impressed by his beauty of tone and phrasing. It was a nicest surprise to discover that he could offer performances of such level of artistry in the chamber repertoire. This disc alone raised my admiration of Larin, one of the best tenors on operatic stages these days.
First of all, these songs require broader performance most of the time. They are passionate quasi-operatic works with a most evocative and sometimes melancholic atmosphere. Larin pours his heart and soul in these pieces. His tone is honeyed throughout, powerful when it opens up, but he also produce the most extatic soft tones when required. The wide palette of tone colouring is quite helpful to differentiate each song from the others and his care with the text is so amazing that, even if you don't know the text or are not Russian-speaking (as I am not), you won't really miss it, so powerful is Larin's ability to create the right mood. If you have any doubt, you should try "In the Silence of the Secret Night" - a most delightful song.
Last but not least, Eleonora Bekova is the amazing pianist who not only shines in the sometimes virtuosistic piano playing preditably required by Rachmaninov, but also responds sensitively to Larin's singing throughout. A nice example of interplay between admirable musicians.

Before you think about shelling out big bucks some sellers are asking for this release (that apparently was only available briefly at Target stores) it is worth noting that the two unreleased bonus tracks on this disc ("I'm Beginning To See The Light", "Softly As I Leave You") have since been reissued on the Fanclub Edition of "It's Time" (available through michaelbuble.com), which in additon includes a third bonus track "It's All In The Game". If you're a serious fan the Fanclub Edition is the one to get!
