The revived Quango label wants to expose new talent like it did in the mid-'90s, but Cosmic Funk proves that you can't go home again. Back then, Quango's artists dealt in a compelling, mostly underground type of dance music known as electro, which combined funk and early hip-hop culture with the primitive synthesizer sounds of the early '80s, à la Grandmaster Flash. But besides the fact that Cosmic Funk's artists all sound alike, nothing really happens after each song's supposedly funky grooves set the pace. Migs & Jelly and the Funky Lowlives create barren grooves only fit for dancing with a daiquiri, while the ethnocentric Kaidi Tatham and SK Radicals intimate a Brazilian percussion party but ultimately forget to turn the record over. Neon Fusion's sparkling "The Future Ain't..." recalls the Headhunters, and it comes the closest to breaking out. But with New Sector Movements and East Village Headz (even the names sound the same), it's back to Loops 101. As a dancing soundtrack, Cosmic Funk moves some booty, but for provocative armchair travel, it is strictly earthbound. --Ken Micallef

Lonnie, Lonnie. Lonnie.......2005-09-15
One of my all time favorites.......2004-09-10
For Fans of Herbie, Isaac Hayes, and Marvin Gaye.......2004-03-20
Be warned: there is a strong element of "smooth" jazz here. There's a good amount of soprano sax and breeziness that may be off-putting to you if you're not thorougly into EVERYTHING from the 70's.
But to be fair, the Cosmic Echoes' sound here is equally characterized by some very dank bass lines, excellent drumming, latin percussion, and the great piano/electric synthesizer work of Smith himself. At many points, just when the music seems about to sway into the schmaltz realm, Smith shows up with some spacey organ to remind you that this is more about a lazy, burnt-out afternoon by the pool than a trip to Sears.
Smith's brother contributes some high pitched, Marvin Gaye-esque vocals on a couple of tracks that some people may like, while some people may wish weren't there. The lyrics to these songs are pretty idealistic, which is a nice way of saying "dated," and the delivery again is breezy--- almost at odds in certain points (particularly on the title track) with the knotty funk being laid down by the rhythm section.
But given time and taken on its own terms, "Expansions" reveals itself to be a great summer album. It's happy, it's bright, it's silky, it's funky.

Album Description
This classic Funkadelic album (from 1973) has been remastered from its original master tapes for the first time in 15 years. This is the first album with Gary Shider and marks the beginning of the tighter, more commercial, Funkadelic albums of the later Westbound years. It includes a number of dance floor favorites such as the title track "Cosmic Slop" and the much-sampled "Nappy Dugout". This 2005 CD includes the full nine tracks of the original album plus the substantially different single edit of the title track. The in-depth sleeve notes by funk expert and series consultant Dean Rudland include details of the history of the band and this recording, including information taken from an exclusive interview with original Parliamentarian Fuzzy Haskins. The CD booklet includes a full color reproduction of Pedro Bell's classic album art and contemporary adverts, pictures and memorabilia. Westbound U.S.Customer Reviews:
YOUR HONOR! I DIDN'T DO IT!!!!.......2007-05-23
This 5th installment with Westbound records is an all time classic. No two Funkadelic albums are alike. The opening song "Nappy Dugout" is a nice slow jammin groove with a little taste of DC in there! "You Can't Miss What U Can't Measure" is actually a cover song. It was originally by thier alter ego "THe Parliament" from a song named "Heart Trouble". The opening line was a catchy one "Worryations got a hold on me". "Witches Castle" Is about not only the nightmare of the vietnam war, but the nightmare many of the fellas' came home too. For instance. You come home to your wife, but she had remarried becaue she was under the impression that he was dead. It's an overal great album. My favorite is "Trash a go go". Don't know why it has that title but it's a song of a pimp in court sayin "Your honor, I did not do it"...lol. As another writer put it. It's HOlland Dozier HOlland on some acid. Great album.

Grooves galore: Albums are promising for new label.......2004-01-22
Posted January 9, 2004
**** Clyde Stubblefield, The Original (Liquid 8/Nardis); **** Various artists, The Down and Dirty (Liquid 8/Nardis): Clyde Stubblefield's funky beats on vintage James Brown tracks have been sampled by thousands of hip-hop acts, but it has taken more than three decades for the drummer to release a solo album.
The Original , a reference to Stubblefield's title as the "original funky drummer," is worth the wait. In addition to being a confident combination of jazz, mannered hip-hop and old-school funk, these 10 songs are an auspicious debut for Nardis, a Minneapolis jazz label directed by pianist Ben Sidran.
Sidran and his son Leo are the principal producers and arrangers on The Original , building tight, intensely rhythmic grooves around Stubblefield's foundation. The drumming isn't flashy, but each snare drum and bass combination is a perfect one-two punch.
Though the beat is the attraction, the unobtrusive melodies are capable of commanding attention, especially the unison tenor sax and trombone in "Stubbs' Relentless Groove."
That groove is extended on The Down and Dirty , a compilation of Go Jazz tracks released separately by Nardis as a companion to The Original . It includes the title track of Stubblefield's album along with songs featuring trumpeter Clark Terry, vocalist Jon Hendricks and guitarist Phil Upchurch, among others.
Upchurch leads the closing "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothin,' " with Stubblefield on drums, the JB Horns (Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker) and Prince cohorts Rosie Gaines and Michael Bland.
Nardis plans to release similar compilations with each of its 10 scheduled releases this year. The Down and Dirty is a promising start.
