Cosmic Funk

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The revived Quango label wants to expose new talent like it did in the mid-'90s, but Cosmic Funk proves that you can't go home again. Back then, Quango's artists dealt in a compelling, mostly underground type of dance music known as electro, which combined funk and early hip-hop culture with the primitive synthesizer sounds of the early '80s, à la Grandmaster Flash. But besides the fact that Cosmic Funk's artists all sound alike, nothing really happens after each song's supposedly funky grooves set the pace. Migs & Jelly and the Funky Lowlives create barren grooves only fit for dancing with a daiquiri, while the ethnocentric Kaidi Tatham and SK Radicals intimate a Brazilian percussion party but ultimately forget to turn the record over. Neon Fusion's sparkling "The Future Ain't..." recalls the Headhunters, and it comes the closest to breaking out. But with New Sector Movements and East Village Headz (even the names sound the same), it's back to Loops 101. As a dancing soundtrack, Cosmic Funk moves some booty, but for provocative armchair travel, it is strictly earthbound. --Ken Micallef

5 out of 5 stars Lonnie, Lonnie. Lonnie.......2005-09-15

Another great. I was a Teenager when a lot of this material was made........on Vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites.......2004-09-10

This disk is timeless. Anyone who likes funk-jazz, smooth jazz, hard bob or plain good music will like this disk. Lonnie Liston Smith is one those forgotten about guys who got lost in the void of the 70's. However this disk just proves that great music is always being made no matter how bleak the scene may be. As The previous reviewer said there are elements of smooth jazz but I don't think that's fair. Smooth jazz evolved from music like this so while there are similarities it is just one influence. Kinda like comparing rock and roll to the blues. That being said my favorite tracks are summer days and shadows the solos by Smith on them are great. Unfortunately as much as I love this disk I always skip over peace (Check out Horace Silvers Blowin the blues away for the real version) and my love. However the other songs more then make up for this. Give this one a shot if you want to hear something truly original for its time.

4 out of 5 stars For Fans of Herbie, Isaac Hayes, and Marvin Gaye.......2004-03-20

This album occupies a middle ground between the all out jazz/funk of Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters" and the soul/R&B of Marvin Gaye.

Be warned: there is a strong element of "smooth" jazz here. There's a good amount of soprano sax and breeziness that may be off-putting to you if you're not thorougly into EVERYTHING from the 70's.

But to be fair, the Cosmic Echoes' sound here is equally characterized by some very dank bass lines, excellent drumming, latin percussion, and the great piano/electric synthesizer work of Smith himself. At many points, just when the music seems about to sway into the schmaltz realm, Smith shows up with some spacey organ to remind you that this is more about a lazy, burnt-out afternoon by the pool than a trip to Sears.

Smith's brother contributes some high pitched, Marvin Gaye-esque vocals on a couple of tracks that some people may like, while some people may wish weren't there. The lyrics to these songs are pretty idealistic, which is a nice way of saying "dated," and the delivery again is breezy--- almost at odds in certain points (particularly on the title track) with the knotty funk being laid down by the rhythm section.

But given time and taken on its own terms, "Expansions" reveals itself to be a great summer album. It's happy, it's bright, it's silky, it's funky.

5 out of 5 stars Badd&Slammin".......2002-03-16

I have followed Lonnie Listen Smith's Albums&Career for quite a while. His Solo Albums are slammin as He is Rocking the Keys here.Bringing His own Unique touch to Jazz&Funk.from His tough Grooves with Pharoah Sanders to His Stand Out Jams here.this is another in a long list of Must Have Jams from Him check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Expand your mind.......2001-10-20

Everything between Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock, Lonnie takes you on a journey of his own. A combination of funk, jazz and some psychedelia, Expansions shares a time in place with such artists as Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Herbie Mann, and Freddie Hubbard just to name a few. Lonnie and his Cosmic Echoes will take you on a mind trip with the title song "Expansions. A song with spacious keyboards a funky beat and peace loving lyrics. A real treat.

Album Description

This classic Funkadelic album (from 1973) has been remastered from its original master tapes for the first time in 15 years. This is the first album with Gary Shider and marks the beginning of the tighter, more commercial, Funkadelic albums of the later Westbound years. It includes a number of dance floor favorites such as the title track "Cosmic Slop" and the much-sampled "Nappy Dugout". This 2005 CD includes the full nine tracks of the original album plus the substantially different single edit of the title track. The in-depth sleeve notes by funk expert and series consultant Dean Rudland include details of the history of the band and this recording, including information taken from an exclusive interview with original Parliamentarian Fuzzy Haskins. The CD booklet includes a full color reproduction of Pedro Bell's classic album art and contemporary adverts, pictures and memorabilia. Westbound U.S.

5 out of 5 stars YOUR HONOR! I DIDN'T DO IT!!!!.......2007-05-23

Cosmic slop means to "dance with the devil to pay your bills". Do what you don't want to do but you have to do something to survive. Bottom line. The liner notes talk about prostitution and how pimps lure young women into selling themseles. Deep liner notes.
This 5th installment with Westbound records is an all time classic. No two Funkadelic albums are alike. The opening song "Nappy Dugout" is a nice slow jammin groove with a little taste of DC in there! "You Can't Miss What U Can't Measure" is actually a cover song. It was originally by thier alter ego "THe Parliament" from a song named "Heart Trouble". The opening line was a catchy one "Worryations got a hold on me". "Witches Castle" Is about not only the nightmare of the vietnam war, but the nightmare many of the fellas' came home too. For instance. You come home to your wife, but she had remarried becaue she was under the impression that he was dead. It's an overal great album. My favorite is "Trash a go go". Don't know why it has that title but it's a song of a pimp in court sayin "Your honor, I did not do it"...lol. As another writer put it. It's HOlland Dozier HOlland on some acid. Great album.

1 out of 5 stars Love the Funk but don't order on Amazon.......2006-05-03

I ordered this and several other hard to find P-Funk cds. I waited more 2 months. Then, the week they were supposed to arrive, I received an email that my credit card had been declined. I found out that was simply a lie. I had just used the same care the week before this order and used it after, all on Amazon. I don't know why Amazon is offering these cds if they can't fill the order.

1 out of 5 stars Truly Awful.......2006-03-16

Wow, I like many, many different types of music, but this is really, really bad. Please don't believe me - Simply listen to the clips. Wow.

5 out of 5 stars Raw and WILD Funk That Last.......2006-02-20

'Cosmic Slop' was the first Funkadelic CD I ever purchased.I was 16 and well aclimated to Parliamnt and George Clinton's solo album 'You Should'nt've Bit Fish'.The minute I laid eyes on this artwork I knew I was in for a funky good time. But was I ever underestimating things. The minute I started this up in my old Sony portable disk player 'Nappy Dugout' blew me away with it's raw, rhythmic funkiness. This album in particular (and the opener) owes alot of 'Payback'-period James Brown and the first school of funk-with Clinton's acid rock twists.Especially on "Trash A Go Go' Funkadelic give creedence to their name as one of the first all African American rock band. But funk is a premium and they never EVER water it down. One the rocking title cut and "You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure' the band push forward with honesty and great social insights into how the black community feels internaly.Kind of like James Brown and Sly Stone blended together for the black power movement. Those with an open mind to raw honesty and wisdom will not only be able to get this music but can boogie to it too.On "March Of The Witches Castle" George Clinton delivers one of his patended elder wiseman dialogs he is so good at.And Eddie Hazel is a GENIOUS on guitar-only recently accepted as such in the rock world next to Hendrix,Santana,Tommy Bolin and all other acid-rock funk guitar gods. The reality of life for African American's living in urban area's circa 1973 could be very unpleasant and these guys aren't about to lie about it but the story will be told on the booty shaking funky dancefloor if they had anything to do with it.After hearing this and coming to this realization I dug up all the other Funkadelic CD's-all of which are excellent.Even my own dad (from that generation and the man who introduced me to George Clinton) found the music terrific and the lyrics...well in his case drolly humorous however I took every word they said as honest (if sometimes twisted) truth and can be one of the few Funkadelic listeners who get the point of not only the music but the liberating concept.

5 out of 5 stars This Album Overflows With..........2003-02-17

Everything you need by Lonnie is right here on this CD! The group that put this collection of songs by Lonnie should be praised...they actually filled a CD with music that should be heard by the masses! It is rare to find an album so complete in style and context. Be excited when the UPS person delivers this one to your house!

5 out of 5 stars Smith's most consistent outing.......2002-04-25

This one is packed with classic tracks and is probably Smith's best record of them all. He wasn't quite discoed-out yet and he was fresh off of his traditional jazz runnings, so this record hits a very comfortable middle ground for fusion heads as well as those more tuned into smooth jazz. An incredible record that doesn't get anywhere near enough props as it should for helping define the fusion movement of the early 70s.

5 out of 5 stars If it's Lonnie...it's golden........2000-06-16

Let me put it this way; any Lonnie Liston Smith album you pick up will be amazing. That's the raw truth. Hence, you can count on Cosmic Funk blowing your mind, just as any other would. To be more specific, Cosmic Funk has ALL the elements of soul/jazz/atmospherics that the others do, but also another added bonus. Covers of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" and Coltrane's "Naima" make this album a collective jewel. The title track is a straight funk explosion that sets the mood for the rest of the album. Melodically roll to "Sais (Egypt)" and groove to the house-ish "Beautiful Woman." The surprise on this masterpiece is "Peaceful Ones." If you're not careful Donald Smith's voice may catch you off guard with it's colorful beauty, but bask in it. If this review doesn't isn't the catalyst to pick up Cosmic Funk...I don't know what is. Peace to all.

3 out of 5 stars Where did the funk go ?.......2006-10-24

I have gloried in Clyde's days with James Brown - recently I got the Live & Loud concert cd from 1968 in Dallas - he was the "master blaster". Clyde still shows he can get on the beat but the album on a whole was disappointment. I expected him to cut loose at any time but there was just more gags and laughing.

5 out of 5 stars CLYDE FINALLY "GIVES HIMSELF SOME"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-16

In the past, Maceo, Fred, and Bootsy have released their solo albums and FINALLY!!!, Clyde "the Original Funky Drummer" Stubblefield has his own album, and I am happy to say that he came through with a MASTERPIECE at the right time when Hip-Hop is on life support. To all the Hip-Hoppers who are tired of the same ol'"just-add-water" production that is just simply getting on my last nerve, PLEASE!!!! Do yourselves a favor and cop this CD, and let a real old school James Brown alumnus guide the Hip-Hop Nation

5 out of 5 stars He Is The Original Funky Drummer.......2004-05-29

We are all in debt to Mr. Stubblefield for his massive contributions to modern music. He created the funk beat and raised it as his child, he is the most sampled drummer in the world, and he has his place in the Rock & Roll hall of fame next to James Brown. Produced by Ben Sidran and Leo Sidran, "The Original" is an R&B record you can bump in your car, woo your lover, or cook Cajun to; courtesy of Stubblefield's relentless grooves. The female vocals are smooth as satin, and the horn section skillfully flows between hi-hat and bass drum. Frequent back-and-forth dialogue between the Sidrans and Stubblefield will take you right into the sound booth, looking directly at the man behind the beat. To Mr. Stubblefield, 59 is just a number. "The Original" explores his life from his past days with the "walking band" of Chattanooga Tennessee through the present as a survivor and Madison institution. If you only buy one album this year, this should be it. All content copyright Maximum Ink, 2004.

4 out of 5 stars Grooves galore: Albums are promising for new label.......2004-01-22

By Jim Abbott | Sentinel Pop Music Critic
    Posted January 9, 2004

**** Clyde Stubblefield, The Original (Liquid 8/Nardis); **** Various artists, The Down and Dirty (Liquid 8/Nardis): Clyde Stubblefield's funky beats on vintage James Brown tracks have been sampled by thousands of hip-hop acts, but it has taken more than three decades for the drummer to release a solo album.

The Original , a reference to Stubblefield's title as the "original funky drummer," is worth the wait. In addition to being a confident combination of jazz, mannered hip-hop and old-school funk, these 10 songs are an auspicious debut for Nardis, a Minneapolis jazz label directed by pianist Ben Sidran.

Sidran and his son Leo are the principal producers and arrangers on The Original , building tight, intensely rhythmic grooves around Stubblefield's foundation. The drumming isn't flashy, but each snare drum and bass combination is a perfect one-two punch.

Though the beat is the attraction, the unobtrusive melodies are capable of commanding attention, especially the unison tenor sax and trombone in "Stubbs' Relentless Groove."

That groove is extended on The Down and Dirty , a compilation of Go Jazz tracks released separately by Nardis as a companion to The Original . It includes the title track of Stubblefield's album along with songs featuring trumpeter Clark Terry, vocalist Jon Hendricks and guitarist Phil Upchurch, among others.

Upchurch leads the closing "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothin,' " with Stubblefield on drums, the JB Horns (Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker) and Prince cohorts Rosie Gaines and Michael Bland.

Nardis plans to release similar compilations with each of its 10 scheduled releases this year. The Down and Dirty is a promising start.
