Classic Rave

Editorial Reviews

URB
From Channel X's superb Rave the Rhythm and SL2's jungle precedent On a Ragga Tip to NRG's unrelenting He Never Lost His Hardcore and the Twin Peaks-inspired Go from Moby, Classic Rave paints a vivid picture of the aggressive yet novel tracks that characterized the era.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best Old School Classiks.......2006-02-02

Classic Rave has got to be one of the best "Old School" Comps every put on CD. First off you get the likes of Baby D, Human Resource, and Moby or this, but this has one of the best Electronica songs every put on album and that is the classic "Trip II the Moon (parts one and two)" I encourage all fans of electronica, espically the newer generation, to pick this CD up for that one Song alone. For the time it was recorded, it is revoluntary for an electronica song. The beats, the changes, the emotion of "Trip to the Moon" sends chills down my spine, still to this day. Even though some of the songs are a bit cheesy, you really get a good feel for the early days of Rave..ENJOY

5 out of 5 stars *spiffiness*.......2000-07-31

I can't say I really know what I'm talking about when it comes to retro-techno/rave stuff...I just recently got into rave music...but I can say that I really enjoyed this album, even without knowledge of these songs beforehand. There's a good selection of songs here that all stand apart and are completely dancable....my favorites are probably Pacific State 808, On A Ragga Trip (one of the most dancable songs), and Trip II the Moon (my fave! hehe it's so~o tyte...imho) I dunna. Just...sample a few songs, and if you like what you hear...get it! You don't have to have knowledge of the rave scene in the past to enjoy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars classic rave is classic sex.......1998-07-18

One of the more enjoyable CD purchases I've made lately; I was actually entertained (suprise, suprise!) Some of Rave's more cheezy moments are preserved on this retrospect (such Dominator) but other moments are just totally classic. Such as the riveting move groove of Capella's Everybody. And also enjoyable is Baby D's Let Me Be Your Fantasy (nice breakbeat loops with nice minor-7th pads and sexy voice). Beyond classic are the inclusion of 808 State's Pacific State (remember that erie lead horn synth hook?) and Moby's GO (before Moby went). If you were part of the rave ordeal in the early 90s this will bring back a lot of memories of strange evenings on Indian reservations. If you like hot, booming retro-techno, you will like this.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Something Great Gone Terribly Wrong.......2003-11-29

I LOVE the Reducers, I really do. And just about every necessary song you'd hope appears on this compilation. So what's the problem? Whoever mixed this CD did the Reducers a monumental injustice. The moment I put the CD in, I could tell that someone botched the job. The sound is muddy and the band's spirit doesn't shine through. I have tapes I recorded of this band off the radio on a crappy boom box that sound more vibrant! I have not heard the other Reducers CD's and any Reducers is better than none, but I believe I will be sticking with my vinyl LP's and hope that somehow this abomination is repaired. The band deserves it!

5 out of 5 stars Let's Go!.......2003-11-02

This is it. Without the major label backing of the british bands of the era, and without the critical huzzah's of bands like the Shoes, the Scruffs, etc., these 4 guys from New London were simply one of the best rock and roll bands of the early eighties. Not really punk, more post-New Wave, they remind one of the great lost British bands that appeared on Stiff like Wreckless Eric and Tenpole Tudor (check the cover's album for those references.) What they were more than anything was one of the greatest bar bands of all time, that's where I saw them along with on my college campus. I saw them right when it seemed like they might break. They didn't which is where this comes in. At their worst, they're a fun guitar rock band from a time when that had been subsumed by synths, punk, post-punk whatever. At their best, especially on tunes like Better Homes and Gardens and the phenomenal Let's Go, they were sublime. Long live the Reducers.

5 out of 5 stars They rock, pure and simple.......2003-05-05

Living in NYC, I got turned on to The Reducers in the mid-80s when WLIR used play the explosive "Let's Go." Screw Good Charlotte - "Let's Go" is a true anthem, right up there with "London Calling, Ghost Town, Radio Radio," and "What's So Funny `Bout Peace, Love and Understanding?" I recently convinced a friend to buy Redux; and when we put it on his stereo and cranked up the volume, he looked at me with widened eyes and said, "This rocks!" Thus has been the comment of anyone who has ever heard The Reducers. Indispensable for starting off mix tapes with a kick and a bang. And oh yeah, they were the first band to write an excellent pop-rock song called "Closing Time."

They are right - New London hardly ever does rock. The Reducers, however, do - in a big way.

Classic Rave 2 isn't as good as Classic Rave 1, but it's still good.

Included are the classic beyond classic "Chime", "Vamp", and "Don't You Want Me".

However the track listings are wrong and "rave Alarm" and "Feel Cool" are replaced with Acen's "Close Your Eyes" and 2 Bad Mice's "Bombscare"

Over all a good look at the early rave scene and many of the tracks wont let you stay still, buy Classic Rave 1 if you dont alreayd have it, C.R. 2, and Classic Acid also, which is part of this series.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rave lives up to its name sake...........2000-04-16

This is the second offering in the `Classic Rave' series by Moonshine Music. It is a compilation of rave music from the early 1990's. Many `first generation Ravers' will be familiar with most of the tracks here. Moonshine has several `Classic' series to chose from and all of them have a knack for inspiring instant nostalgia.

The late 1980's and early 1990's was a time of true underground for many of us `rave goers.' There were no DJ mixed CD's back then. The Internet was just a Government resource and pop music was still centered on rock & roll `hair bands.' The Rave scene was the only real outlet for many of us Techno heads. Music stores and clubs were not very Techno friendly. In reality the only way you could find any Techno at all was on 12" vinyl. This was before it was long before it was called `Electronica.'

Now, just a word of warning, Techno back then was not as elaborate or as easy on the ear. It was extremely raw. It was true electronic music. Many artists were using new ranges and sound that had never been heard before. In short, give a listen first and keep in mind that these tracks gave birth to all that you hear today.

With that in mind, my favorite tracks on this release are 2) Orbital - Chime, Orbital still puts out some of the best Techno around; 5) The Goodmen - Give It Up, this one was one of the few songs that crossed over into being more of a dance Classic; 9) Hyper a Go Go - High; this track is a clear example of the piano's influence on Techno to this very day.

This is a worthwhile purchase if you are into oldies in the electronic music scene. But don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself. :)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful..........2007-01-20

Relaxing, sublime, and so sweet; we don't get enough of this kind of joy in our lives.

I love it....thank you so Ms. Hart!

5 out of 5 stars Ab-Fab (Absolutely Fabulous).......2002-12-09

I have been listening to Ms. Hart for years, and this CD is the "Bomb"! Some of the tunes should be considered for a movie sound track. Every time I hear Ever Blue, I visualize a love story involving intrigue, passion, and suspense. The entire collage and artistry of May I Come In is truly a labor of love. I highly recommend this CD and look forward to the next. This is a worthwhile investment.

5 out of 5 stars Upside of Music on Internet: Discovery of Pamela Hart.......2002-10-23

While most people are bemoaning the internet and the supposed destruction of the music industry as a result, I would like to trumpet the upside of it. I discovered Pamela Hart by downloading 4 music clips of hers on Amazon Music Downloads (they are still here). I put them into my Windows Media 9 downloaded player. They sounded absolutely fantastic back to back at about 2 minutes apiece. Then I got the CD and it was even a better experience to listen to the full songs plus the other songs on the CD. She reminds me of Ella Fitzgerald in the clear, lilting lyrical style she employs, almost floating above the material and floating you along with it. Yet there is a touch of the smokey Julie London here too. These are jazz, R&B, and standards, my favorite musical genre. Hart is a local super nova songstress in Austin, Texas. It is unlikely I will be in Austin anytime soon and so it is unlikely I would have otherwise discovered Hart but for the internet. I think the internet is more of the claimed disaster for bloated musical international superstars than it is for emerging artists. At one time, staying put in your own town or state was certain death for an artist of any sort. With the advent of the internet, we consumers now have the power to discover those talents while they stay in their local venues. This means they needn't lose any of the local roots and influences which attracted us in the first place to their stylings. I think those of you who have been listening to Diana Krall and Stacey Kent might even be happier with the singing of Pamela Hart or at the very least, as happy. Give her a try.

5 out of 5 stars Pamela, One Of The Very Best Jazz Artist On The Scene Today........2001-11-21

Upon receiving the CD via snail mail, I have kept it on the carousel. Starting with "The Way Of Love" and ending with "The Masquerade Is Over" Each tune well orchestrated and the voice of Pamela is very good. I would love to hear more from Pamela.

Sandra Kaye

5 out of 5 stars Yes you may.......2000-07-06

Wow! The CD has a Salsa opening (That's The Way Of Love) that makes you want to hear more of it. Things slow down a bit with "Ever Blue". Pamela makes you think she is singing to you when she does "I Want you To Be My Man". All the nauances of an outstanding singer are shown when she sings "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Second Time Around", "The Masquerade Is Over" and the title tune "May I Come In". Rich Harney wrote three excellent tracks, Hart and Hughes callaborated on two tracks. This CD produced and arranged by James Polk is excellent. Yes Pamela you may come In.

The second title in Moonshine's Electronic Music Classics series, this 10-track compilation offers a commendable if brief primer on the dawn of the "acid" era, from Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash" to Josh Wink's "Higher State of Consciousness." Being that the distinguishing feature of the genre is the elastic rhythm sound of the Roland TB303 drum machine, there is a tendency for things to occasionally get repetitive. For the most part, however, it's a nostalgic trip most raveheads will delight in taking. --Aidin Vaziri

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2001-06-24

This CD contains the truly classic artists of underground ACID scene.I did not put 5 stars only because of one reason.I can't understand what the hell 'AGE OF LOVE' is doing in this compilation.(??) Even if Jam & Spoon used the TB303 for their remix, they did it on a minimal level.Ok,maybe it is still Acid but it hardly could be CLASSIC ACID.Fortunatelly,it is the only track that sux.The rest of the songs are awesome!!The best tracks are 'Energy Flash','Access','Positive Education','Higher state of...' and 'Circus Bells'.They sure show the huge potential of 303 Bass-line.In fact, this compilation is an excellent example of what Acid style stands for.

4 out of 5 stars Kudos to Moonshine for keeping Classics Alive.......2000-04-16

This is one of several releases in the budding `Classics' series by Moonshine Music. This selection of tracks has an important theme. All of the tracks on this collection were composed either partly or completely on the "Roland TB303" machine.

Much electronic music is composed on numerous sampling machines by Roland, Ensoniq and various other manufactures. The sample loader is an essential part of what made Techno what it is today.

All of these tracks truly are Classics in their own right without the association to the 303, but is good to have all of them together on one CD. Many of these tracks have been re-mixed and are still heard at raves and in clubs to this very day.

The best tracks are 4) Slam - Positive Education, an early excursion into acid trance to be sure; 6) Age of Love - Age of Love, I have heard mixes of this song in all sorts of venues for years; and 8) Sourmash - Pilgrimage to Paradise, a true breakbeat classic.

Not all of these tracks may be as easy on the untrained ear as more recent Techno. Unless you are familiar with the tracks before hand I would recommend that you give it a good listen first. Today's electronic music has evolved a great deal since the hayday of the TB303. Just remember that what you hear on this album is what inspired what you hear in the clubs and raves tonight. But don't take my word for it, make your own decision. :)

5 out of 5 stars It couldn't be better!!!.......1999-05-03

I purchased this CD over a month ago and have yet to grow tired of it after more than 3 dozen listenings. To say it is "the bomb" would be an understatement. It is all peak hour, high bpm tracks. Two standouts are Awex and Age of Love. Any fans of acid will not be disappointed.
