3 out of 5 stars Lean Sushi Portions.......2007-05-19

There are some great deep house tracks on Stereo Sushi 10's two discs but many of them have obviously been trimmed down to under six minutes. This frustrating trend grows with each new Hed Kandi release and it's really starting to anger me. When dance music guru, Mark Doyle was on board, I used to destroy djs with cuts from Kandi compilations. I still rock my cds from the Doyle era and I love his new label, Fierce Angel. The current Kandi team is too busy cramming 12 and 13 cuts on each disc while editing out some of the best parts of killer songs. What we end up with is a bunch of radio versions that are useless to club djs and true househeads. For example, Bobby and Steve's In My Heart is only 5:50 here but it's 7:45 on their Connected compilation. Dennis Ferrer's Church Lady, Mr. V's Jus Dance, and I Don't Know Why (I Love You) by The Brand New Heavies (Kenny Dope Vocal Mix) also get butchered. I could go on and on but you get the point. Hed Kandi has been falling off since Mark Doyle left and they need to get it together. Instead of murdering good 12 inch jams in order to include more on one compilation, they could simultaneously release solid Sushi, Disco Heaven, and Disco Kandi collections. 10 or 11 full length songs on each disc is more than enough to satisfy house music fanatics worldwide. If I'm going to keep paying 30 bucks per compilation, I expect more than extended sound clips.

Stereo sushi is the first album from Hed Kandi's sister label.
It features 2 full length CD's with high quality unmixed tracks.
The contents isn't your avarage comersial house sounds, but not "really" deep stuff like Kevin Yosts material. It's somewhere in between, and if you have good taste in house you will like it.
By track 4: Matthias "Matty" Heilbronn - Keep On Movin (II Deep House Mix) you can sense where we are heading and track 6: Physics - Deny Me Love (Dub Version) takes you to the roof with awesome deep ambience and cool beats. Track 10 would be a given hit if it weren't for Alcazar's simplified ... mainstream ... ("sexual gaurantee"). On CD 2 we find an interresting track with Tiefschwarz at number 2 which features cool vocal effects. Track 6: AK - Say that you Love Me (FK-EK Japanese Vocal Mix) is a funny good spirited song with what I'd call typical japanese house harmonies. The compilation is rounded up in a superb funky manner at track 8 with Jon Cutler feat. E-man - It's Yours (BEHEMOTH aka Torn De Neef Remix.
Don't miss this album or you'll be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars the best soulful house compilation of this year.......2002-03-19

Stereo Sushi is the new sister label of Hed Kandi. All of the tracks are jazzy and soulful. My favourites are Viola's "Little Girl," AK'S "Say that you Love Me," with a sweet Japanese vocal mixed by Francois Kevorkian and Eric Kupper and Derrick White's "Soul 2 Let Go". Most of the tracks are in vocal mixes by well known DJs of the deep house scene. This CD is essential for all the soulful, groovy, jazzy house music lovers.

What a great label. I love hed kandi and this is just another reason to love them more. If you like house music with some nice female vocal tracks, then you must own these cds.

5 out of 5 stars Wasabi Hot! .......2005-03-17

Came across this album quite by accident in Sydney last year. Heard it playin across the store & i immediately made a beeline to buy one! Since then I have bought the other Stereo Sushi series and this is definitely the best! Get it by all means! Enjoy it over yr iPod or even while driving or chillin' out.

Intoxicating it is! The artistes are the cream of the crop and certainly churn one of the best fare for soulful hse music!

ENJOY! You won't get sick of listening to this gem!

5 out of 5 stars Mark Doyle's a very busy man.......2005-01-24

I'm more of a fan of the beach house and stereo sushi series that hed kandi puts out, and numero 6, "sake," has shown me why. Beautiful, sexy, edgy house. It's like having little happy bubbles blowing through your place, only not in a scary way. My favorites are:
1) Joey Negro's "Sugar," which, once you let yourself get past the 'this is too 70's' notion, would make yo grandma get up and shake her cane (no offense).
2) Miguel & Jay J's "Friend of the Blues." Lemme say a big fat "thank you" for digging up a fresh migs mix! I'm sure this one will be making its way onto many more mixes in the next year.
3) Mood II Swing's "Can't Get Away." Sexy sexy sexy, and more sexy.

Buy it, love it, and play it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars zen fun!.......2004-11-25

I've got nothing but love for this album. Like one reviewer said it's a good soundtrack for daily living!

5 out of 5 stars Come Get a Sip of This Sake........2004-11-07

Hed Kandi's sister label has released a surprisingly consistent entry, filled with delicious house tunes bearing a soulful and jazzy edge. I say "surprisingly" because I didn't think Mark Doyle could come up with a compilation that could rival his own "Disco Kandi" series. As it turns out, I was wrong. Disc 1 is total bliss with treasures like Late Night Alumni's "Seemingly Sleepy," Mood II Swing's seductive "Can't Get Away," and Kathy Brown's disco thumper "Never Again." The second disc has rewind-worthy highlights like Simon Grey's "Prophecy," Rasmus Faber's classy "United/Divided," and Dina Vass' "Now I'm Free" which stand out particularly well. Groove Junkies' "Didn't I Bring You Love" is the sole clunker, thanks to its Jerry Springer lyrics. Other than that, most house listeners will find little to find fault with "Stereo Sushi - Sake." Like the drink after which it's named, it's intoxicating.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing like the previous Stereo Sushi cds.......2007-01-11

I adore Stereo Sushi... I have all the previous cds (except for vol. 8). I can't stress enough how different this one is to the ones before. It's a completely different genre of music! If you are thinking of buying this because you like the others, you will be highly disappointed. I can't believe they are even calling this 'Stereo Sushi'.

2 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2006-08-29

I hadn't bought any HK since Mark Doyle's departure, but being a big fan of the Stereo Sushi series I thought 'let's give it a try'. An utter disappointment i have to say...

CD 1 is good but not great, "runaway love" is a fine track but it is also on "Tokyo Disco", "for all eternity" is a cool track in the old sushi spirit, as is "devotion" (seamus haji hardly ever gets it wrong), "just a dream" is my favorite here, a real surprise with nice vocals by Kimara Lovelace (never heard of her before). the other tracks are all below average - not one of them makes me return to this CD over and over again.

CD 2, well, is just boring. it has none of the sushi spirit and feel. some people might like but not me...it's not joyful, happy house the way i've come to expect from this series. the only one standing out (barely) is "you're not alone". btw, i cannot stand the bassline on "life ain't what it seems"...

all in all, going by the other reviewers' method, 3 stars for CD 1 and 1 star for CD 2 equals a 2 starred review.

4 out of 5 stars Essential latin and deep house..........2005-04-06

I love the Hed Kandi and Stereo Sushi comps...Perfect for having loads of new tracks to play with..this one is my favorite in the series so far...big numbers in my sets are Carla Alexander's "Volume", Botella Project's "Agora", and Praful's "Inspiracao"...many of the other tracks are very playable, and I highly recommend this one for any cdj in need of slamming latin / deep house...

3 out of 5 stars Latin Disco that offers a kick to the palette........2004-01-14

Here's the Hed Kandi recipe: Full-length, unmixed 12"singles collections, two dozen tunes over two discs, in equal parts big hits, nondescript pieces and fizzled duds.

Stereo Sushi 5 goes away from the series soulful house roots for a journey in warm Latin-disco. It's a welcome venture, especially for fans of their Beach House collections. A midtempo disc one highlights with the shuffling beats and piano composition of Vincent Kwok "Las Laves," and a shift from uptempo to hammock breeziness on the C&M Afterhours mix of Malena "Para Ti." Disc Two ramps up the energy with chugging Brazilla-vocal numbers and floor fillers, notably Jensen & Reynolds "Don't Cry' and Afro Medusa's "Dreams."

There's occasional dalliances with a too-big or simply gibberish vocal (Ivan Iacobucci "Pria Negra") but on the whole Wasabi offers the kick to the palette you'd hope for. Here's hoping the volume 6 keeps with the trend.

5 out of 5 stars Another Delicious Serving.......2005-04-04

After a year, Hed Kandi has once again served another course of Stereo Sushi, a delicious dash of disco with glorious soulful vocals. Not only does this edition have the best cover of the past 6, but also features tons of songs that'll have you begging for more.

The compilation features 2 disks, each unique yet similar, and both full of great listening. On CD1 the first 7 songs are truely genius and worth the price alone. "Start it Up" "Hypnotized" and "Thank You Lord" being some of my big favorites. Other dandies are "Trumpent Funk" and "Everlasting Love"

Then comes along disk two, which packs the same punch as the previous, giving us more funky lounge jams like "Ain't No Love" "Star Lover" and "Portuguese Love"

Let me remind you, that although I only mentioned a few songs as being "Amazing" I assure you that every song is very, very good. Anybody who has purchased something from Hed Kandi before knows that they always include a few worth-the-price-alone songs that blow everything away, and then some really good ones, then some good ones, and maybe 1 or 2 "okay" ones. I only mentioned the blow-you-away songs.

This Compilation is perfect for playing while your working around the house, driving, or just in the mood to get a little funky!

5 out of 5 stars Aaah.. delicious soulful house funk!.......2007-04-13

This album contains the grooves of Summer!

Listening to this album is like a warm House meal, he he : )

The high ratings for this album are accurate. Buy it, love it, enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Stereo Sushi improves second time around........2002-11-11

This second volume in the "Stereo Sushi" series is easily more satisfying than the first. The first "'Sushi", while danceable, suffered from a lack of prominent tracks (Kaskade's "Gonna Make It", Kings of Tomorrow's "Young Hearts" and Viola's "Little Girl" being exceptions). Indeed, the first volume of "Stereo Sushi" largely sounds like a collection of danceable background music. With "Stereo Sushi 2", Mark Doyle significantly improves on his formula of "soulful deep house lounging".

This collection has it all; superb tracks, outstanding artists and excellent remixes. Blaze appears twice, first with their reworking of Jody Watley's "Saturday Night Experience" and again with a remix of Ananda Project's "Breaking Down". MAW turns in an appearance with "MAW's Theme" and Hed Kandi mainstays, The Rurals, turn out another novel track, "Habits".

Perhaps the only downside to this compilation is the Spen and Karizma remix of Angie Stone's "Brotha". While Angie Stone is a brilliant artist and Spen and Karizma are excellent remixers, the inclusion of a remixed, soul/pop genre song somehow takes away from the underground mystique of this collection. That aside, "Stereo Sushi 2" is a worthy addition to any dance music collection.

4 out of 5 stars SOLID HOUSE RELEASE, GREAT VALUE FOR YOUR $$$.......2004-07-30

Like the acclaimed HED KANDI CD series, this STEREO SUSHI provides more bang for your buck, collecting otherwise hard-to-find and costly $$ import house 12's onto CD format for the first time - many many stunning, lush, deep, rich house tracks to choose from, but WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION if only for the uplifting BLAZE SHELTER VOCAL MIX of JAMAICA UNDERGROUND's gospel house anthem LOVE EXISTING, where new vocalist JOHN LEWIS (who is this guy?!) gives a truly SEARING, RAW, INTENSE vocal/falsetto/scat vocal performance - right up there with CECE ROGERS, KENNY BOBIEN, and TEN CITY'S BYRON STINGILY, if this track doesn't get your hands in the air, you don't have a pulse.
BOOM!

5 out of 5 stars UFFF MARK DOYLE ITS THE BEST.......2003-03-14

a good selection , a good taste , a stylish house ,

5 out of 5 stars Stereo Sushi 3 is the best 'Sushi yet!.......2002-11-12

Often, multi-volume dance compilations suffer esthetical decline with each consecutive release. Such is not the case with the "Stereo Sushi" series. "Stereo Sushi 2" was much better than "Stereo Sushi", and "Stereo Sushi 3" is the most soulful yet.

The multi-talented Jody Watley makes a second appearance in the "Stereo Sushi" series with the superb "Photographs", and disco legend Linda Clifford churns out another classic with "Sunshine". Also, legendary jazz vibraphonist Roy Ayers makes an appearance as a featured guest on Ferry Ultra's "Dangerous Vibes".

The remix work featured on "Stereo Sushi 3" is no less integral to the compilation than the artists. Phil Asher's Restless Soul remix of Jody Watley's "Photographs" is excellent, as is Blaze's Shelter Vocal Mix of Jamaica Underground's "Love Existing". Also, Lenny Fontana does an outstanding reconstruction of Stephanie Cooke's "I thank you".

Aside from the tracks already mentioned, standouts from the compilation are Kaskade's "What you are to me", Jon Cutler Feat. Sarah Anne Webb's "Dawn", DJ Mood Feat. Mood Rotation's "Morning" and Groove Junkies Presents Solomon Henderson's "Inside My Soul".

It is interesting to note that included on "Stereo Sushi 3" is a cover of Inner City's "Goodlife" by Kaori. This song is one of the grand staples of early house music, and while this cover falls seriously short of the original, it is a pleasant listen nonetheless.
